*FLASHBACK*
"Why the frown?" she asked me, walking into our apartment. We'd come to spend another weekend together, moving most of our stuff in.
"Cypher regularly tests our decoding skills in case our communications get cut off from our tech teams on missions, and Jayme sent me a code I can't decipher," I easily lied.
I was testing something.
She walked over to me and took my tablet from me. "This is easy. What don't you understand?"
"I can get the gist of it, but every time I put my guesses in, it rejects them," I replied.
"Where's Sparkles?" she asked, deciphering the code.
"He's probably in the lounge. What are you doing?" I asked in return.
"There you go," she said, handing me the tablet back. I couldn't believe it.
"You deciphered this in less than a minute," I commented.
She shrugged. "Numbers are my thing. Besides, you were probably looking at the longer way of figuring it out. You just need to really analyze what you're looking at, before you do anything. Figure out all the possible patterns in your head first before trying to put in your answer."
"Even if what you're saying works, your brain still works faster than normal," I pointed out.
"I know that much already. So, I got Chinese and pizza. What do you want?"
***
She looked at me, deadpan. "And you couldn't think of anyone else?"
"If Jayme can't crack it, no-one else at Cypher will be able to, which leaves you," I explained. The guys were looking at me with extremely high levels of confusion.
They were probably wondering what I was high on to think a civilian could be better than Jayme at hacking.
"What makes you think I have any idea what's going on here?" she asked, looking at the screen.
"I never thought I'd say this, but numbers are something only Franco truly mastered in all their forms at Cypher. Jayme is close behind but still has a lot to learn. However, I'd like to believe that just like with Franco, this comes naturally to you," I told her, but she'd already started typing.
"What secret am I about to unlock anyway?" she asked.
"It's not a secret. You're hacking into Genesis," Nigel informed her.
"Oh great! I'm a criminal now," she said dryly, typing away.
"You're not a criminal if you're working for the greater good," Aziel argued.
"Is that the crap they tell you at Cypher?" she asked.
Malachi scowled. "You're uncharacteristically sarcastic Elliephant. What's going on?"
Biggest mistake he could've made at that moment.
She stopped typing to face him. "Excuse me for not being particularly happy about being kept away from the one night every normal student looks forward to in their entire schooling career. We're already late, and here I am being told that I am saving the world by helping to hack into an organization that will probably kill me if they find out my grumpy ass hacked their facile system."
"Facile? I've been trying to hack into it for the past four hours!" Jayme said in disbelief.
"It's not that hard Jay," she said before turning back to the laptop. She beckoned him over and he went.
"You see how the threes keep dropping to be replaced by the sevens?" she asked, to which he nodded.
"You just need to..."
I tuned her out as she went on to explain the whole thing. I was still stuck on how beautiful she looked, despite her being mad at me. When she opened the door, I was about to start apologizing, but I ended up getting tongue tied from how flawless she looked.
She was dressed in a floor length ombre dress. From what I picked up, the top is black, and then it fades into a combination of red, purple, white and orange. Her hair was styled in a sophisticated hairdo and she had minimal make up on with a dark purple lipstick.
She looked breathtaking, and I'd let her down.
I honestly didn't know where I would begin to make it up to her. Hell, I wasn't even sure if we'd make it to prom. However, I wanted to at least try. I would work on making it up to her after that. I don't know how, but it will come to me.
"All of that for nothing," I heard Jayme say, bringing me back to the situation.
"I'm still stunned by the fact that Elliephant actually hacked the system; in three minutes on top of that," Malachi commented.
"How did you know she'd be able to do it?" Jayme asked me.
"When we were at Safe House 4, her calculation skills caught me off guard. I knew then that I had to make sure that I was onto something here, so I asked you to give me that file from Franco's archive. She decoded it in less than a minute," I informed.
"You were testing me?"
"Less than a minute?"
I turned to my girlfriend, ignoring the guys. "I wasn't testing you as such. I was confirming my suspicions about your skills. You are as good as, if not better than Franco, and from the look on your face, I can tell you never really took your skills seriously."
"I mean, I've always thought that I was freakishly smart when it comes to numbers especially, but I didn't think anything of it," she said, confirming my thoughts.
"Well damn! You're sure to be on Cypher's radar now," Malachi said.
She scowled. "I wouldn't want to work for that place!"
"And why not?" Nigel asked.
"They're keeping me from my prom," she replied before leaving the room.
"You're going to have to make it up to her big time," Aziel told me.
"Like I don't already know," I mumbled.
"Speaking of which, where's Bridgette?" Nigel asked.
Malachi sighed. "Upstairs. She'd been waiting with Elliephant."
"So you also have some major kissing ass to do?" Jayme chuckled, earning himself a glare.
"What's the way forward now that we don't know where those bullets came from?" Aziel asked.
"We stick to the plan. We'll head out to Headquarters and then go and get Nadia, before we do anything else," I said.
"Alright! I guess we can go to prom now. We're only an hour late," Nigel commented.
"That's if the girls still want to go," Jayme argued.
"Shut up Jayme!" Malachi and I simultaneously as we headed up the stairs. Again, I knew we'd find the girls in my room here.
"Blossom, I know you're mad, but do you still want to go to prom?" I asked her.
She gave me a bored look. "I'm honestly not in the mood, but I'll go if Bridge still wants to."
"I guess I'd like to," Bridgette replied with tinged cheeks. I was wondering why until I realized that my best friend had probably the same stupid look I had when I saw blossom.
She looked beautiful, but nowhere near my blossom.
"Then I guess we're going," blossom said before walking right past me and out of the room.
"She's not mad you know? Or at least not at the reason that you would think," Bridgette told me as she stood up.
"I don't understand," I said in confusion.
"She wants to be mad at you because tonight is important to her, but at the same time, she's mad at being mad at you for trying to do good. Actually, I think she's more on the confused side. She's not sure what she wants to feel right now," she explained.
Now I get it.
"We'll meet up with you guys at school," I told them before walking out to find my girlfriend.
I found her standing outside in the garden. I didn't even notice until then just how many lights there were in the garden, or its design for that matter. Everything was perfect, which made me realize that Mr Solano must've gotten someone to do the gardening.
However, the garden wasn't what had my attention. Standing at the bush with peach roses was the love of my life, and she'd never looked more immaculate than she did standing there. She'd just picked up a rose to smell it when I snapped a picture of her on my phone.
I am after all her number one fan.
She turned to face me, rose still in hand. "Hey."
"Hey right back at you," I responded, walking towards her.
"Is Zuri ok? Why did you need me to hack into Franco's system?" she asked.
"Franco's gone, and for whatever reason, he took Zuri with him. I'm sorry I ruined your night blossom. I promise to make it up to you a thousand times over," I said, wrapping my arms around her waist.
"You don't need to do that. I mean, I am disappointed that I didn't make it on time, but I understand that there was a greater event to attend to than our mundane prom. Besides, I had the chance to walk away from this the moment I found out the truth about who you are and I didn't. I made my choice by choosing to stay with you, which also means I accepted that things wouldn't always go my way," she said dejectedly.
As understanding as she is, she shouldn't have to get used to me disappointing her in the name of saving everyone else. "I have a surprise for you."
"You do?" she asked in confusion.
"Yep! But we have one stop to make," I told her, grabbing her hand in mine.
"Ok, but where are we going?" she asked.
"You'll see when we get there. By the way, did I tell you just how beautiful you look right now?" I asked.
She blushed. "Only ten times already, despite me ignoring you."
I pulled her in for a sweet kiss. "You look absolutely flawless."
"You don't look too bad yourself," she said dazedly, making me chuckle before kissing her forehead.
I led her to the car after learning that Jayme was tagging along because blossom apparently told him that he wasn't allowed to stay. She failed to get Mordecai to come, and I could understand why. Once he's onto something, he doesn't let it go until he's figured it out.
"Would you please tell me where we're going?" she begged. We were halfway to school.
"Nope! How about you tell me how your day has been?" I suggested.
She sighed. "I guess it was ok. I got pampered and I got to bond with Bridgette once it was just the two of us left."
"I honestly didn't think the two of you would turn out to be such great friends," I admitted.
"What you did to her was only her fault in that she fell for someone who didn't return the feelings and was desperately seeking the attention of. It happens to the best of us. I knew that I couldn't judge her based on that. She's not a bitch and she has a great personality. Thanks to my decision of refusing to judge her, I earned myself a friend for life," she said with a smile.
"Life?" I asked in surprise.
"Do you really think that Malachi will open himself up to any other girl?" she asked.
"I guess you're onto something. Did she share her life story with you?" I asked.
She nodded. "She did. She worries about losing Malachi the same way, and it's going to take some more convincing on his part, but they should be fine- after the two of you spill your dirty secret that is."
"You're seriously not considering doing it?" I groaned.
"No! In fact, you should be the one to tell him," she pointed out.
"You saw what he did in that simulator," I reminded.
She smirked. "And I've seen you fight. He won't kill you, but he does deserve the chance to at least harm you for what you did to his future wife."
"She was a willing participant," I defended.
"Who had fallen for your false acceptance of her. You've already taken responsibility for what you did to her. Now you just need to face your best friend. Trust me when I say that it would be better coming from you," she said.
"Fine! I'll tell him tomorrow on our way to Headquarters," I grumbled.
"Headquarters? Tomorrow? What are you talking about?" she asked.
"We're headed back to HQ because we realized that Nadia has been dark for too long. We're going to get Margaux to get us back online and then we're heading to Spain to get Nadia," I explained.
"And you were going to tell me this when? And if you dare say you're telling me now, I swear I'll scratch your car," she threatened.
"I was going to tell you blossom. We only made the plan earlier when we made the realization. Besides, it's not like you're staying behind," I pointed out.
I looked over just as she scowled. "I'm not?"
"Nope, you're not! Your dad would never allow us to leave you or Bridgette behind now that the two of you know more about Cypher than any other civilians. Moreover, I want to show you where all the magic happens," I said, putting my hand on her leg.
She puffed. "Yeah sure, magic."
I chuckled. "Don't you want to come along?"
"And miss out on a free trip? Are you mad?" she asked, making me laugh harder.
"I didn't think so. After the night that's in store for us, you'll rest on the jet," I informed.
"You do know that the rest of the crew, especially Sunny, Nick and Felix, won't be particularly happy about being left behind right?" she asked.
"I know that much, but we'll be going on a mission. We'll bring everyone else to see the OUTSIDE of HQ once everything has died down. You and Bridgette are the only ones allowed access," I explained.
I parked the car as we arrived at school. "Why do I have a feeling that we don't really have access and that you and Alac couldn't care less what anyone has to say about that?"
"Probably because you know me better than I know myself," I replied before leaning over to kiss her.
I got out of the car before going around to let her out. We could hear the music all the way in the parking lot. I took her hand in mine and we headed towards the gym. When we entered, eyes turned our way before the murmuring took off.
"She looks so pretty."
"He looks so hot. Oh my God!"
"They make such a cute couple."
"Can you imagine what beautiful babies they're going to make?"
"She'll have to make sure she keeps a hold on him before someone takes him from her."
Knowing that she'd heard that last one, I reached over and whispered in her ear. "I'm yours and will never belong to anyone else."
She looked up at me with a smile on her face. "There was never any doubt, and only because the same goes for me."
I leaned down to kiss her. "Good! I'm going to check something quickly and I'll be back."
"Ok! I'll be with the girls," she said, pointing to her seemingly excited cheer members.
I nodded and let her go while I went to find Bridgette, Nick and Malachi. You see, I've realized that if I want to have a successful relationship, then I'm always going to have to have a backup plan, which is the surprise I have for my girlfriend.
"How did you know that you wouldn't make it on time?" Sunny asked me as I reached her. She was with the other people I was looking for.
"I know myself, and I know my job. If I'm right, then things will go according to plan about twenty percent of the time," I replied.
"That's a lot of back up plans," Nick commented just as my eye caught my girlfriend. She was laughing with her friends.
"She's worth all the backup plans and money in the world," I said. My best friends gagged, making me laugh as I turned back to them.
"Is it ready?" I asked.
"The venue is ready and the relevant people have been notified of the changes. We're just waiting for Sunny to announce Prom King and Queen and then we can leave," Nick told me just as Sunny got onto the stage.
"Good evening Seniors of WPA! I'd like to formally welcome you to our prom night, and may I just say how great you all look," she said, causing applause and cheering all around.
"You look beautiful," Cash shouted, making everyone laugh while his girlfriend blushed.
"Thanks baby! Anyway, I want us to enjoy the rest of the night without any more interruptions, so we agreed to get the pending Prom King and Queen Announcements out of the way so that the night can carry on. Based on your votes, your Prom King title goes to none other than Six," she announced. Cheering ensued while I stood there confused.
Why the hell would these people vote for me of all people?
Sunny laughed. "I never thought I would say this, but you've all officially managed to stun him."
"Get up there and claim your crown," my girlfriend shouted across the room, resulting in some encouragement from the girls.
"I'll only go up there if you're my Queen," I shouted back at her, making the girls coo.
"As fate would have it, she actually is. Your Prom Queen is the stunning Noelle Solano," Sunny announced.
"Me? I've barely been here a full school year," my girlfriend argued.
"That may be, but in the short time you were here, you've made friends with everyone. You're one of the nicest people we all know, you've done amazing things for our cheer squad, you're dating the hottest guy in school and you're representing us girls for the official run for valedictorian. You deserve it," Taryn, her squad mate, said, making everyone cheer in agreement.
"Ladies and gentlemen, presenting to you your King and Queen, our beloved Nix," Sunny announced.
People cheered as I walked over to my girlfriend to give her my hand to take. We made our way to the stage together. When we arrived, I was first crowned, before she was crowned next. When we'd been crowned, the floor shook from how loudly everyone was cheering.
They made way for us to head into the dance floor for our dance. I couldn't be bothered to listen to the song that was playing. My eyes were glued to this vision I get to call mine. She looked nervous with all the eyes on her.
"Hey, look at me," I told her.
She looked up at me, eyes shining. "Tell me you had nothing to do with this."
"For once, I had nothing to do with this. This is all you. People clearly see you the way that I see you, and I wish you could see yourself in the same way. You're amazing blossom," I said with a smile.
"I can't believe this. I never thought I would ever know happiness again. You make me so happy Xander. I don't know what I would do without you," she said before laying her head on my shoulder as we swayed to the slow song.
"Even when I screw up?" I asked.
She giggled before looking back up at me. "Screwing up is a part of life. This only means that whenever I screw up, you should be brought back to moments like this."
"I love you," I said.
She blushed. "I love you even more."
I smirked. "I love you most."
"Imp-"
I stopped her before she could say anything by twirling her and then dipping her before I kissed her. I could hear our friends whooping and hollering in the background much like they did when we had our first kiss. She smiled into the kiss before we pulled away.
"You're not going to get away with that," she said, smacking my chest.
I winked. "I'd like to believe that I already have."
Everyone joined us on the dance floor once the song changed, and I figured I could let her have an hour more to revel in the attention on her. Everything else was already set and it was a case of just letting her enjoy the moment.
"Blossom, we have to go," I told her once the hour was up.
"The surprise?" she asked, to which I nodded.
She said her farewells while our friends and all other relevant parties had already left. I had blindfolded her and she told me all about what she'd like to do in the summer holidays. From listening to her, I figured I could make most of the things happen.
But then again, things may not go according to plan.
"We're here," I informed her.
"Can you take off the blindfold now?" she asked.
"Not yet," I told her before going around to let her out.
I led her up the stairs and arrived to find our friends and her cheer squad mates and their dates already settled. I uncovered her blindfold and she gasped. You see, I knew that prom was a big deal to her, so I made her one as well.
Sunny and the committee had gone with an underwater theme, while I went with an under the stars theme. There were fairy lights everywhere, and once again, Bridgette, Sunny, Felix and Nick had outdone themselves with putting something together for me.
She turned to face me. "What is this?"
"It's your very own prom. I knew I would fuck up with our prom, but I didn't want you to lose faith in me, so I came up with a backup plan. I knew the gang would be willing to help because this is our own little intimate prom. We invited the rest of the cheerleading squad and the football guys and their dates so that it wouldn't be too sm-"
I never got to finish my sentence since she ambushed me in a kiss. I could feel wetness between our cheeks, so I knew she was crying. I pulled away worriedly only to find that they were happy tears since she was smiling.
"I could never lose faith in you Xander. You've shown me time and time again that I'm important to you, and you're important to me too. You don't need any backup plans to keep me. I'm not going anywhere just because you sometimes have to choose the world over me. After all, if we're going to have kids, they need a world to actually be born in right?" she said cheekily.
I chuckled. "That they do my blossom, that they do."
"But thank you for being so sweet! I love you all the more for it," she said before kissing me.
I smiled after pulling away. "It's only my pleasure blossom."
We got our very own prom underway. We'd hired a DJ and we were all having a good time. For the first time since I moved here, I let myself relax around the people who I wasn't necessarily close with.
"She's not mad at me," my best friend commented beside me. The girls were on the dance floor while we watched them from a distance. It made me smile seeing my blossom laughing and enjoying herself.
"Did you expect her to be?" I asked him.
"Well yeah! I mean, this is technically our first date and I was late to it, but she's not even the least bit mad. I keep waiting for her to explode unexpectedly. Hell, she even made conversation with me on the way here," he said, looking highly confused.
"Trust me Alac. You would know if she was mad at you. Bridgette isn't one for withholding feelings," I replied.
"Is that why she beat you to telling me what you did to her?"
