Chapter 16
One week.
One long, dragged out week passed. (Y/n) couldn't wait that long. But she knew that patience was key.
So while she waited, she avoided Yugi, Anzu, and their little crew entirely. It was surprisingly easy. Yugi didn't go over to ask for an apology. Jonouchi almost did. But Honda managed to hold the feisty blond teen back.
(Y/n) still managed to keep busy. She organized her notes instead of tossing them across her room. She reviewed all she had written down, as if she were studying for a test.
This was more than a test though. This was revenge. She wanted Yami to understand why she was avoiding him and his friends. Everything happened for a reason, and this was no different.
(Y/n) refused to succumb to his cruel games and sweet-hearted mask anymore.
She wanted an answer.
The day of the dance had finally come. Everyone chattered amongst each other, talking about who they were taking, song ideas, all that juicy stuff.
But (Y/n) wasn't that kind of person. She normally wouldn't attend these silly events. Maybe if she had a lover. But hers no longer existed. Not in her mind.
After school, (Y/n) went straight home. She reviewed all of her notes and plans, making sure not a single detail was left behind. Her action plan was dangerous ... perhaps even deadly. But if it solved the whole "Yami" problem, then it would be worth it, right?
Dinner felt dragged out. Her parents had made spaghetti and meatballs, and felt like forever before (Y/n) had finished her meal.
"I'm going to that dance at school tonight," (Y/n) reminded her parents. Her mother smiled. "That's fine, as long as you're home by ten," she replied sweetly.
"And no picking up any boys," (Y/n)'s Dad teased.
(Y/n) rolled her eyes. "Dad! I won't! There's nobody I even like!"
Dad's eyes twinkled. "If your sure,"
Laughing, (Y/n) grabbed her bag and left the house. She had put on a white dress with flower patterns on it. May as well look like you belong.
Domino High School loomed over the students as they milled into the entrance. (Y/n) lingered near, clutching the strap of her bag tightly. There was no sign of Yugi and his friends.
She made her way behind the school. To (Y/n)'s surprise, there was no one here, not even the students who would smoke in secrecy. There was a trash can and recycling bin right by one of the emergency exit. Unzipping her bag, (Y/n) took out the box of matches. With surprising ease, she lit the match and hurriedly dropped it in the garbage can.
She was shocked by how fast the cab caught fire. It crackled and snarled, flames eating at the contents of the bin. (Y/n) stood there in awe. She knew that fire was powerful, but this? This was a power she had seen Yami use.
Maybe that's one reason why he sets his enemies on fire, (Y/n) reflected. It's quite practical, and quite painful too.
(Y/n) moved onto the next phase of her plan. She entered the building, speed walking her way towards the gym. Everyone would be there. Soon enough, she began to see colourful streamers hung on the wall, as well as balloons bounced up into bouquets.
The doors of the gym were swung open wide. (Y/n) could barely see inside the gym, due to the mass of teenagers blocking her sight.
Glancing across the huge room, she finally caught sight of them. Anzu was showing the others dance moves. Taking the all the credit, as usual, (Y/n) scowled to herself.
Right by the food table, there was another garbage can. (Y/n) almost smiled to herself. She faced her back to the other teens, warily striking a match. Was she really about to do this?
I have no choice. It's the only way to stop all of this.
With trembling arms, (Y/n) dropped the lit match into the garbage.
It lit up into huge, hungry flames.
And the gymnasium erupted into screaming.
A crescendo of wails filled the echoing room, which was (Y/n)'s signal your run. She burst out of the gym, not looking back. As she passed trash cans, (Y/n) threw lit matches into the cans.
Terror pulsed through (Y/n) as she burst outside, her breath drawing ragged gasps. She turned around and covered her mouth in horror.
Smoke poured out of the windows, billowing into the sky. Flames could be seen, slowly eating away at the school.
What... what have I done?
She fell to the ground, her hands still covering her mouth. (Y/n)'s eyes were teary, and she let them spill out onto her cheeks. Her body shook as she wept, melancholy settling in.
Blinking through her watery eyes, (Y/n) stopped. The silhouette of a man could be seen emerging from the flames. It looked shadowy and dark, standing out easily among the fires.
Oh fuck.
Of course. I knew deep, deep down that this would happen.
"(Y/n)!" Yami called. To (Y/n), his voice was filled with rage. On instinct, she bailed the scene, tears still falling. She headed towards the alleys, hoping to lose Yami in the maze.
After what felt like forever, (Y/n) stopped in front of a large, brick wall that blocked her path. She slammed her arms onto the wall, not caring for the pain.
"Why?!" She cried out. "Why won't you leave me the fuck alone?! Why won't you leave them alone?! Yeah, they were bad, but no one deserves to die in a fire. No one but me,"
(Y/n) hiccuped. "I didn't want to hurt anyone. I thought I was protecting everyone I cared about. But instead I hurt them. Maybe even killed them over a stupid grudge that had nothing to do with me!"
"I wish you had realized sooner," Yami whispered into (Y/n)'s ear from behind. Exhaustion crept over (Y/n). And as she collapsed, she caught a glimpse of Yami's face, a pair of sad crimson eyes gazing down at her.
