Whenever I go to write a story, I never usually use an idea based on my experiences. I usually use concepts that I find interesting. Nyctophobia, however, is an exception.

(Y/n)'s behaviour is based on my own past fears of Yami Yugi. Yes, dear reader, I used to be afraid of him. Especially his Season Zero/Manga interpretation.

I think it stemmed from his intimidating demeanour. I mean, come on. He was able to send shivers into me with just a look, and able to make those who went after Yugi and his friends fear him.

I used to have nightmares of him inadvertently causing harm to those I cared about. One night I even cried myself to sleep once.

But I never told anyone. I kept my fear about Yami to myself, and never told anyone. And yet I still loved Yu-Gi-Oh! as a franchise.

Eventually, I began to see something in him. Maybe it was that protective and dark nature of his that made me fall for him.

During that dark time in my life, I came up with the basic idea for this story. I wondered what it would be like for someone (the reader) to be his lover, and then feel betrayed when they witnessed him dealing out his brutal punishment games. I wondered what they'd go through mentally, and how far they'd go to put the paranoia to rest.

And then, I discovered the Yu-Gi-Oh! community here on Wattpad. And I found my chance.

Most of the Yami x reader fanfics here on Wattpad don't have as much conflict between (Y/n) and Yami. Yes, it was nice, but where was the fun in writing a flawless and mindless relationship?

It's definitely been a fun ride to create and finish a story here on Wattpad, even if it is Fanfiction. I look forward to writing more, and beginning my new series Pandemonium!
