"Have you seen a rather small german shepherd running around here?"

Those were the first words he spoke to you. You were both fifteen, it was summer, and you two were complete strangers. Your fingers tapped against the table you were seated at.

"No, but I'm sure I could help you find it?"

"Really? Thanks, my brother would die if he found out I lost him."

From there, you had found his dog and returned it to him. After that, you had met him again at your school.

"Hey _____ !"

You two were in several classes together that year, and it wasn't long until you were best friends, practically joined at the hip. He helped you and you helped him. His younger brother was a sweetheart too. You smiled at the image of you three together. They looked nearly identical, those two.

Christmas that year, he had given you a glass heart on a chain.

"A symbol of our everlasting friendship." He had said.

It didn't last.

"______ I have someone I'd like you to meet."

Middle of sophomore year. He'd introduced you to one of his other friends, and that was the end of you and him ever being alone again. It turned out she was a little bit more than a friend. He'd confessed his feelings for her about a week after she started hanging around with you.

He was rather infamous in that manner, though not as infamous as the popular clique was, and had many girlfriends, but he was serious about his relationships.

He was too quick to lose his heart.

So you waited for it to end, for him to fall for another.

But then it became quite obvious that this one would last. He loved her and she loved him. It always sent a pang through your chest whenever they were together.

It was then, you discovered how you felt.

But he was happy, and that made you happy, and you would let him have that happiness even if you were torn apart so he could keep it.

An image of them, taken on a whim. A sorrowful smile grew on your face. You clenched the pendant on your neck. You overlooked the hairline fissure that spread over the surface.

You knew they loved each other. He loved her, and she loved him.

But not enough.

She didn't love him enough.

Six months into their relationship, you found her in someone else's bed.

You still had the photo.

He had been heartbroken.

"______ what did I do wrong? I loved her!"

Then there was anger, unrelenting anger.

But it wasn't on his part.

Over the next week, her status was ruined.

That one image was posted all over the internet.

It was halfway into junior year when he met another one.

His heart was too weak.

You clasped the photo of them in your hand. There were three fractures fanning off of the first.

They didn't last long, she broke it off when she realized she didn't like him as much as he liked her. Her last words to him were: "You deserve someone who can return the love you give them."

Then she looked at me, in the background. "That someone might be closer than you think. Keep looking."

He wasn't heartbroken at that one. It made him determined.

Six cracks.

Halfway through senior year, you tried to stop they way you felt. He had searched and searched for someone who would return his love, and gone through thousands of girls (and boys), and you were tired of being jealous. You accepted and started dating one of the people who confessed to you.

He was livid, then accepting. Then the other broke it off, and he comforted you.

It was at the end of senior year when he told you.

"I'm going to college overseas."

You were shocked.

It was then, that you realized you loved him.

So you told him.

And he had kissed you. You smiled fondly at the image of you two at graduation.

Then he left. Without saying goodbye.

You were alone after that, sure you had other friends, but they weren't him.

You went to a good university nearby.

And now, you were sitting in a quaint little cafe.

You both used to love it here.

You closed your photo album and put it back into your messenger bag. You were taking off your necklace, when the bell above the door rang, signaling the entry of a new customer.

And you looked up from your booth.

And as your eyes met the familiar crimson ones, you could have screamed with joy.

Then you noticed the woman on his arm.

And the glass pendant in your hand shattered.
