"Who are you texting, Phoebe?" Zoe asked you, a knowing smirk on her face as she joined you on the sofa. Alfie also walked into the living room.
"No one." You replied, trying to keep the smile off your face. You were actually texting your boyfriend, Joshua but you didn't need Zoe's teasing and Alfie's hostility. You didn't know why he hated your boyfriend so much. Yes, you were his little sister and it was his job to be a little protective, but still.
"You sure?" She continued, probably referring to the dreamy smile on you face and blush on your cheeks.
"Yes, Zoe, I'm sure." You told her, and luckily she dropped the subject.
Five minutes later, you screamed and shot up from your seat, jumping around with happiness.
"What?" Zoe and Alfie both asked, alarmed by your sudden excitement.
"Josh is coming to Brighton for a week!" You yelled, squealing as you ran up to your room to FaceTime him. You and Josh met online a while ago and you were aware that some people wouldn't approve of that, but that's exactly how Zoe and Alfie met and look how happy they are now. Anyway, that's not the point. Josh lived all the way in Scotland, so you barely ever got to see him but since it was half term he was free from college and so he was coming down to Brighton just to see you.
While you were upstairs talking to your boyfriend, Alfie and Zoe were still downstairs in the living room and Alfie was not happy.
"I don't like him." He stated, crossing his arms over his chest.
"It's not like he has to stay here or anything, is it?" Zoe pointed out.
"That's not the point. What if they get left alone together? I don't want her being alone with him."
"You have to trust her, Alfie."
"I do trust her, it's him I don't trust."
"She's old enough to make her own mistakes, Alfie, and you don't even know if this is a mistake."
"I don't care how old she is, she's still my baby sister and it's my job to make sure she's dating the right kind of guys."
"Why don't you talk to Phoebe?" Zoe suggested, "Tell her how you feel about him."
"She'll just get mad and think I'm trying to tell her what to do." Alfie huffed.
"It's worth a try, isn't it? This is the best option if you don't want her getting mad at you."
"I guess." He sighed in defeat.
So, the next day, you were in your room trying to decide what to wear when Josh arrived in a couple days when there was a knock on the door.
"Come in." You called and Alfie walked in, "Hey, Alf, what's up?"
"Uh, I just wanted to talk to you." He said, sitting on the edge on your bed.
"About what?" You replied, not really paying much attention to him and focusing more on the dress in your hand and if it would look good on you.
"Your boyfriend."
You then looked up from your dress and eyed Alfie in confusion, "Josh?"
"Yeah, that one." Alfie nodded awkwardly, "I just don't think... Well, I'm just not sure... Are you sure he's right for you?"
"Yeah, of course, we really like each other. Maybe even love each other." You couldn't stop a smile tugging at your lips.
"Oh." Was all Alfie could say.
Your smile fell and you stared at your older brother, "If you want to say something, Alfie, just say it."
"Okay, fine, I don't like your boyfriend."
"I knew it!" You threw your dress down in annoyance, "You've met him, like, once!"
Your raised voice only angered Alfie and he stood up from your bed, "I just don't trust him, okay?!"
"Well, I do, and he's my boyfriend, not yours, so it doesn't matter what you think of him!"
"It does when you're my little sister!" He shouted.
"You know, all I want is your approval, Alfie, because that's the only approval that really matters to me." You admitted, your voice smaller than before.
"Pheebs..." Alfie's voice and facial expression both softened when he saw the hurt in your eyes, "I'm sorry, I'm not trying to upset you, I just want to keep you safe."
You sighed, feeling bad about shouting at him when all he was doing was caring about you.
"I know, Alf, but I'm old enough to take care of myself."
"Maybe, but that doesn't mean I can't worry." He said.
"I'm sorry for losing my temper." You said, wrapping your arms around his waist.
"I'm sorry too." He wrapped his arms around you and rested his chin on top of your head.
"Can you please just give Josh a chance? For me?" You asked, resting your head on his chest.
"I think I can do that." He smiled, kissing the top of your head.
