Chapter 5: Changing Minds
Hanji's POV
Something changed in the past weeks. During the first week of Levi's stay here, he didn't do anything. He lurked around the house and acted like he owned the place. But recently, he found a full-time job at a supermarket. I was surprised, but... that was why he was here. He was here until he could support himself by himself.
He always came home when I did. He stopped those creepy stares, but sometimes, I did feel like he was watching me. And I think he listens to my conversations sometimes.
Today, he came home with half a dozen chocolate-dipped doughnuts and left them on the table as he showered. I was tempted to take one... but I waited. They were tempting me... but if Levi could kill someone, I didn't want to be his victim. Instead, I sat in the dining room with a bowl of fruits with my homework.
A few minutes later, Levi came to the kitchen with his towel. His black hair was still dripping with water, but he was constantly drying it with the towel. His shirt was damp from his shower too. He wore black sweatpants. He kept looking at me, however, that gaze was not so creepy this time.
"Hi, Hanji," he says softly, "Was school good?"
"Yeah, it's fine. What's with the doughnuts?"
"They said I can take it home for free." He looks at me with those gray eyes, and... I don't know what to say. "Do you want one?"
"I... I do, actually..."
"You can have them."
Reluctantly, I took one of them and ate it. I thanked Levi, still worried. Just yesterday when Nanaba came over, we were talking about doughnuts and I mentioned that chocolate-covered doughnuts with rainbow sprinkles were my favorite. Then Levi comes here with those doughnuts. It's... a coincidence, right? It has to be.
"Do you not like them?" Levi asked me as he crept closer to me.
"I... I do like them."
"Do you not want the entire thing?"
"I want my parents also to have one, Levi." I cleared my throat, asking him the big question. "How did you know I like these doughnuts?"
"I didn't," he says, which I do not buy. "My work had some leftover doughnuts, and I took them home." I raised an eyebrow but didn't bother to ask anything else. "Is something wrong?"
"No, it's nothing."
I watched him walk away, almost like he was heartbroken. There was a moment when I felt terrible for him. Then, I remembered that he killed someone. A murderer in the house... and I was this close to him... if I do anything to upset him... he might kill me.
Soon, Dad came home from work and I was able to breathe with relief. I greet him, and he waves before pointing at the box of doughnuts. "Where did you get those?"
"Levi brought them home from work."
"Huh." Dad was surprised too as he raised his eyebrows and rolled his shoulders. "Isn't that your favorite?"
"It is."
"I'm surprised you didn't eat it all."
"I thought you guys would want one too." Dad continued to look at me strangely. Looking around the room, I ensured Levi wasn't in before confessing to Dad. "It's just that... the other day, Nanaba and I were talking about doughnuts. I say that this is my favorite. Levi comes home today with that very exact thing. It's just... strange."
Dad nods, walking beside me and pulling a chair from the dining table. He sits down with a heavy sigh and looks at me, eye to eye. "Hanji, I love you, you know that, right?"
"I know that."
"Maybe he did overhear you and wanted to get your approval. Don't get me wrong, I know he's a little..."
"Crazy?"
"Let's not say that," Dad chuckles before continuing. "He's weird, I know. You're scared. Of course, you are. He's a dangerous man. But he's not going to hurt you. I promise."
"Dad, how do you know this?"
He sighs, continuing to hide the truth from me. I don't know my dad that well because he hides secrets. Those secrets were things that could put us in danger. I trust my dad with all my life. But I don't understand why he is telling me to trust a man that killed someone. I know Dad is doing this because he loves us. He wants to protect us. However, I just want to know the truth sometimes.
"Dad."
"Trust me, Hanji. I know you don't like him. He's a bit weird at times. But go along with it. Try to stay away from him."
"And don't make him mad?"
"And that." Dad stands to his feet and kisses my forehead. "I love you, Hanji."
"I love you too."
"Let's change the subject, yeah? What do you want for dinner?"
"I want... pizza."
"Hell no, Hanji," We laughed together until we settled to make spaghetti. As I was finishing up my work, I take another doughnut, noting to fully thank Levi for the doughnuts. I trust Dad, so I should trust Levi... that's the right thing to do, right?
