* chapter three ; cold
Next day, the sun had rose already. The wind blows in every direction, yet so cold with the sunlight. Peter has his earphones on and everything about him seemed so calm and relaxed. As he was about to walk pass through a post, a yell from behind caught his attention.
He turned around to see Dennise walking after him with two books in her arms. He slowly took off the left earphone, so he could hear her clearly when they talk.
"Morning, O'levra." He greeted and she joined him as they walk.
"Hi, Peter." She greeted back with a smile playing on her lips and tucked a hair behind her ear. "So yesterday, my mom bought a Star Wars: The Force Awakens blu-ray."
"Oh, really? We better watch that after class." He says excitedly and she nodded in agreement.
"Nice shirt by the way. It made me crave for more pizza." She complimented, admiring the illustration of a pizza on his shirt. "We reviewed yesterday, and did our homework together, so no worries today."
"I know, I know," he raised his arms in surrender with a smug look on his face, "I'm such a good influence. A good role model. If we were not friends, you wouldn't reach tenth grade."
She grinned in disblief, "I'm going to pretend that you didn't say that," she walks faster and he catches up.
"Just kidding." He chuckled and their arms brushed against each other, "So who did you loved besides Ben?"
"What a random question." She hummed, "Ben was my second, but presently I'm in love someone who is my first and I hope to be my last. It's a top secret."
"That's unfair. You never told me your first... I thought it was Ben?"
"You loved Katerina, right?"
"What the fudge, no." He abruptly responded. "I'm already in love with someone too and it's a top secret."
"Hm, if you only know." They told each other in unison and ended up looking at each other.
"What?"
"Huh?"
"Nothing."
"Don't mind it."
He bit his bottom lip and shoved his hands into his jeans with his head down as they walk. She sighs and clutched her books closer to her chest.
Their walk grew awkward, but they gladly reached their destination at the right time without getting late.
It was a bit crowded at the hallway, because there is an intriguing scene occuring. Dennise and Peter joined the others to watch the scene. They saw Ben with rage as he tried to take off the webs on his open locker. Some people are watching.
"Who did this?!" Ben growled, pointing at his open locker. There was a string-- no, a web, formed in different kind of letters that caused the boy to be frustrated.
"Asshole"
Plus his books were scattered on the floor, but wasn't torn.
"What was that?" She quietly asked Peter, gripping his arm and tip toed to see his locker. "Oh, that is cruel."
"It is, but his books were fine, so he should be thankful." Peter smirked and when she looked at him, that smirk was replaced by a feigned worried expression and when she looks away, the smirk returned. "What do you think it is?"
"Honestly, I don't know."
"It's karma." He whispered and took her wrist to take her elsewhere. "Let's go, it's just a waste of time. However, he deserved that."
"Yeah, but that's cruel." She added, her eyes not leaving the scene as he lead her away, "Who do you think will do that?"
"Will you stop being so humble to that guy? He actually used you as his past time a lot of times."
"I know, Peter, but I just still care."
"Bad news, Den. He didn't care for you at all, so stop being so stupid." He snapped and let go of her wrist. A hint of jealousy piercing through his voice. He stormed inside of their classroom and sat on his daily seat, leaving her behind. He stared at the seat in front of him where their bestfriend, Ned, was assigned, but absent.
"Peter." Dennise approached him, standing in front of him. He hummed, not even looking at her. "Peter what is wrong with you? Look, I don't love him anymore, I just care."
"So what's the difference?" He asked coldly.
"Sometimes I can't understand you."
"Neither do I."
From the other part of the world, the Avengers are facing an issue that they can never escape.
"Steve, remember the girl we saw on TV?" Sam asked and Steve nodded. "Well, jackpot. The guy I know is related with the girl. I don't know how it happened, but we'll see."
"Did you saved the video? I'd like to see it again."
Sam opened the laptop that Sharon gave them earlier. Steve, Sam, and Bucky are now heading to [Location/(a/n:ok guys I forgot)], meeting up with the rest of the Avengers who will be on his side, plus they will be expecting two new recruits to fight the other Winter Soldiers (as told by Bucky, they were many; he wasn't the only one).
Sam played the video: a figure of a girl had been cornered by two men with lethal weapons. The footage was filtered in black and white and a bit blurred due to the oldness of the camera. As the first man took a step forward, she formed her hands, mirroring it in the same position and magical string emerged at the tips of her fingers and used it to strangle the two men.
The two men tried to fight back and defend themselves, but they ran out of breath and their bodies fell on the floor, pale and eyes were open yet lifeless.
It was a self defense.
The video took place last month and the government is aware of this, so the people are now afraid.
"Is Barton on his way?" Steve asked.
"Yeah, Clint got him, and they are now heading to Queens to fetch the girl."
Back to Queens, Dennise walked alone to her apartment, head down, hands in her pocket and feeling incomplete. She and Peter avoided each other for the whole day due to what happened earlier this morning. She knows that he was concerned, but he should have delivered his words in a polite way.
"Den, wait up!"
She turned around to see Peter who is panting after running cross the road. She said nothing, waiting for him to talk first.
He was thinking the same thing.
They just stared into each other like there is some sort of contest going on. She tried not to blink, so did he. A moment later, she held back her laugh and tried not to blink.
"Okay," Peter chuckled and blinked, "I'm sorry."
"Me too," she let out a smile and hugged him, patting his back, "That was kinda immature, I guess. And what you told me is true, despite the fact that I couldn't accept it at first, but did anyway."
They released each other and chuckled, scratching the back of their necks in unison.
"So what now?"
"Back to normal."
"Oh, Parker, we were never normal." She giggled, walking pass through him. He got confused, so he walked along with her.
"What do you mean by that?"
"We're bestfriends, but compare to the others, we are more insane than them, right?"
"Oh, right."
Something caught her attention. There was a white van in front of the building and there was her uncle, Scott Lang, holding a backpack and shoved it inside of the vehicle. There was also her mother having a conversation with Scott. As they get closer, they heard their voices and laughter.
"There she is with her bestfriend." Her mother, Gwen, announced like it was a daily routine.
"Hi," Peter greeted.
"Hi, Peter." Gwen smiled at him and gave him a peck on the cheek.
"Hey, what's going on here?" Dennise asked, "Is that my bag?"
"You didn't tell me that you're requested to go in Germany and your uncle will fetch you." Gwen said, slightly stern.
"Germany, why?" Dennise and Peter asked at the same time.
"Oh, she forgot. I knew it!" Scott exclaimed, wrapping an arm around her shoulder and looked at her. "She joined a digital drawing contest on the internet and she won for submitting her art."
"You did?" Peter asked, confused.
"Holy shit, what's that?" Scott pointed behind Gwen, so she and Peter looked, and he winked and nodded at Dennise for her to get a long. She mouthed 'okay', yet still puzzled and have no idea.
"What's what?"
"Oh, I thought it's... Forget about it." Scott said, waving his hands in dismissal, "Do you remember it now, Den?
"Yeah, I forgot. I got so busy, sorry, mom. Aren't you happy? I'll go to Germany to get my prize and have a partnership with the company." Dennise lied and it came out to be good, plus, convincing.
"Is this legal?"
"Of course, it is legal, Gwen!" Scott proclaimed.
"Well, Scott, when you're involved, things are pretty illegal."
"Whatever, Gwen. Mr. Wilson wants to meet your gorgeous, talented daughter in personal for her to sign the partnership and prize. Plus, I used to be a former janitor at his company so the communication is easy to reach Dennise."
"Yeah, you told me that already, Scott. And really, you worked in Germany?"
"No, Wilson's company is around the world you know. Small, but their income is a big deal."
"I packed your clothes already, Den, but I'm still mad at you for not telling me about it."
"Thanks, mom. I apologize, but I will bring you some souvenirs."
She embraced her mother and before she climbed into the van, she was stopped.
"Your bag, your books?"
"Oh, yeah, I forgot, and I need to change my clothes first--"
"No, we're going to be late. Our flight early."
"But--"
Gwen took Dennise's books and bag.
"Bye, mom. Love you!"
"Love you too." She kissed her cheek. "Scott, keep an eye on her."
"You never told me about it, Den? I thought we will be an open book to each other?" Peter whispered and she felt a pang of guilt. She grabbed his arm and lead him far away from them.
"I'll explain it to you when I get back, Peter. I didn't know too, really. I have no idea what the hell is going one, but I'm going to miss you." She whispered and hugged him, then he hugs back, not wanting to let go, feeling so safe in each other's arms.
"I'll be alone. Ned's on a vacation and now you, too."
"Enough with that love birds." Scott interrupted and dragged her niece inside of the van.
"We're just friends." They said together and got hurt at the same time.
"Yeah, whatever," Scott huffed, "That's how Maggie and I ended up being married to divorced."
Dennise waved at her bestfriend and mother with a smile playing on the corner of her lips.
And when she got aboard. Everything happened so fast, very fast. But first, why is she going to Germany? And she has another problem, her homework.
Plus, are they really just friends?
