𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗖𝗘𝗜𝗟𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗪𝗔𝗦 𝗤𝗨𝗜𝗧𝗘 𝗜𝗡𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗘𝗦𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗦𝗢𝗠𝗘𝗧𝗜𝗠𝗘𝗦. So interesting, Scarlet stared at the blank canvas the entire night, not being able to close her eyes for a moment. Time had passed quite quickly, and she did not realise how two months had already gone by between all her studies and whatsoever.

In the morning, she heard awkward shuffling and the chaotic movements of Everest getting ready for class and the blonde was quite used to the irritating noise of it all.

"Scarlet, you're going to be late," the brunette called, making Scarlet sit up in her bed with tired eyes and she rubbed them softly. It was clear nobody was going to pay any attention in their classes—after all, the Gryffindors, specifically the Marauders were throwing Sirius Black an extravagant birthday party and everybody was invited. Including the Slytherins, this time.

"What is that?" asked the girl curiously, gesturing to the velvet box in the girl's hand.

"Something came in for you," Everest gestured to the box laid out on Scarlet's bed.

"From who?"

"I don't know," Eve shrugged. "Just found it there."

Scarlet cast a glance at her best friend then moved over slowly to open the box. She was extra careful—the pranks on Slytherins have escalated ever since she came back from summer. When she removed the top part of the rectangular box, her fingers felt the touch of a soft fabric.

Then her jaw dropped. It was not the softness of the fabric that caught her astonished—hell, even stargazing would not leave her with her mouth hung open. In the box was a dress. And when she took it out and laid it out in front of her, every single detail on it was made to perfection. Starting with the smooth, ending with the long-sleeves that were made with lace. Tiny flowers on one side of the waistline. The length reached all the way down to her ankles and the neck-line dropped down a little more than she would prefer.

It was perfect, the dress. She would have loved it.

      If it wasn't maroon.

There was no way she was going to show up at a party wearing maroon. Scarlet never wore maroon, at least she did not plan to wear anything but emerald, silver, and black as long as she stayed at Hogwarts. The pattern is recognisable: she made a statement to say she is a Slytherin with every drop of her blood.

Under the dress, in the box lay a small piece of paper with neat handwriting. 'S.O.B.' it read. He was trying to be nonchalant with that short as fuck message, yet Scarlet saw right through his non-caring demeanor. It was no surprise he did it on purpose, he knew the way others would react.

"You're wearing our enemy's colour?" Everest gasped loudly, an exaggerated tone of voice came from her. The short black dress she stole from Scarlet's closet fell from her hands and dropped right onto the bed in shock.

That, that's the way people would react.

Thankfully, the lessons ended quicker than she had anticipated. The results of O.W.L.s opened quite some students' eyes and they were eager to do better in N.E.W.T.s. Scarlet quite liked the subjects she had chosen. Undoubtedly, DADA stayed her favourite, and she was quite keen on potions, too.

After sharing Astronomy with Sirius, she grabbed him by the wrist and guided him away from the crowd of students. Remus gave the pair a roll of his brown eyes and a few fellow students eyed them closely, not exactly expecting them to last for an entire year.

"Happy birthday, love. I can't wear it," she told him seriously and talked rather quickly, glaring as he towered over her sharply. Boys just keep on growing, don't they? She felt annoyed at the height he held over her, even when she wore her heels. Maybe she needed to buy higher ones. Priorities, Scarlet.

"Thank you. Wear what?" He arched an eyebrow innocently. It made her so inexplicably angry, that she wanted to rip all his hair out.

"You know what," it was quite literally impossible to be annoyed at his knowing gestures and gifts when he reached forward and pushed a strand of hair behind her ears.

"Enlighten me."

"The dress."

"Ah," he clicked his tongue with a growing grin as he stared down at her cold face, "You'd look incredibly gorgeous in it," Sirius told her, stepping closer flirtatiously. "Or out of it—"

"Stop talking—" she hissed back, allowing her eyelids to tightly fall shut at the unstoppable blush creeping onto her cheeks. "Stop."

"I'll consider it my birthday present," he sent a wink in her direction.

"I said stop talking."

"What would you rather have me do?" asked a grinning Sirius, raising his brows.

She huffed, stepping back and folding her arms over her chest, he eyed her carefully as she did so. "If I have to wear red, you're wearing green."

He laughed, and the sound died down at the tip of his tongue quite quickly when he noticed her serious expression. "What?"

She shrugged carelessly. "Only fair, is it not?"

Sirius stepped forward once more, his figure pressed against hers in the middle of an empty corridor which made Scarlet only pray that nobody showed up all of a sudden.

He pressed his palm against her cheek, and their lips were only an inch apart, noses touching. She felt the feeling around her throat loosen, quite literally as Sirius tugged at her ivy and silver tie, and it came off with ease with one pull.

Breathlessly, without kissing her, he stepped back, leaving her heart beating at a thousand miles per hour. Way too fast.

"I'll see you at the party," he said in an incredibly deep voice, and she wanted to slap the smirk off his face as he walked away, leaving her standing in the middle of the corridor. Did he actually just steal her tie?

"I'm actually going to kill him." She muttered underneath her bed, breathing unstable.

THE DRESS REACHED RIGHT ABOVE her knees, and she complimented the dress with similar coloured high heels and hair pulled into a tight, low bun that added to the sheer elegance of her look. Her arm was looped around Eve's who was in a tiny, tight black dress and long hair left purposefully messy.

The moment the two Slytherins stepped into the place, they caught attention. People left their drinks on the table and came to an abrupt stop to their conversation, all staring at the two. Truthfully, even Everest was used to all the eyes on her by that time. Scarlet never minded it. The pair complimented each other pretty well—the brunette's vivid expressions balanced the blonde's stone-cold face.

"They stepped it up this time," Everest said with twinkling eyes wondering. The entire place was lit up, and banners and confetti hung in every corner of the room. Loud beats from music made the ground vibrate underneath, and people were singing along rather off-key. "It looks fabulous."

"We're complimenting Gryffindors, now." Scarlet chuckled as she shared a look with the girl. For a moment, she contemplated the idea of telling her. Telling her about the night she and Sirius shared, would that be peculiar? Telling her best friend about having sex? They tell each other everything. Just as she was about to open her mouth, a tipsy Marlene approached, looking a bit too exhilarated.

"Don't you look gorgeous," the girl stumbled upon the brunette, and Everest flung an arm around her waist to steady her. "Gorgeous, baby."

"Careful there," Eve chuckled, pushing a strand of hair out of Marlene's face. Scarlet was starting to feel uncomfortable standing right beside the couple and excused herself to allow them some privacy. Besides, it's not like they would do much

Fortunately, Scarlet caught Sirius' eye, and when her eyes processed his simple attire with an additional, eye-catching accessory, to say she was astonished would've been an underestimate. Around his neck hung the green and silver tie he had taken from her earlier this evening.

When she marched over to him, James was yelling at the Black. "You cannot wear that. You're embarrassing us—Slytherin's tie? Are you kidding me?"

"I'm not wearing it for Slytherin," Black faked a gag. "I'm wearing it for... Blondie, hi." Scarlet appeared as he said the last two words, voice raising a few octaves as he laid his eyes on her.

James gave her a strange look, eyes calculatingly lingering up and down before he scoffed harshly. "You're wearing red? Everybody's lost their goddamn minds..." he stated before moving away from the pair with an annoyed expression.

Scarlet averted her attention from the charming boy, "Bold move, I'll admit."

"You wanted me to wear green," he shrugged with a tight grin. "Your wish is my command."

Scarlet chuckled as he stepped forward, looking down at her as he stood close to her figure. "You're so dramatic," at the laugh she let out, his eyes brightened.

"Don't you look exquisite in my colour," Sirius' eyes roamed over her figure, taking in every curve of her body under the smooth fabric.

"So, red is owned by you, now, Black?" She arched a thick brow, a nonchalant smirk tugging at her lips.

"I consider every shade of red mine..." he slowly trailed off, glancing around at the dancing students. "Maroon, crimson, burgundy... scarlet."

"Merlin's beard, Sirius!," Scarlet's eyes widened at his choice of words, blinking away her astonishment as he let out a tiny laugh. "Anyways, happy birthday," she handed him a gift-bag, and he moved aside to put it near a whole tower of gifts he had received.

"You didn't have to," he stated nonchalantly. "I told you, you wearing that dress is my gift."

"Well, I have manners, so, I had to get you something," Scarlet shrugged, and then her expression dropped to a serious one, "I'll be expecting two gifts for my birthday as well."

"You got it." He winked in her direction. However, they were both distracted by an utterly loud noise coming from the other side of the room, screams and threats filling the air.

"Should we go check?" A little worried, Sirius asked. In hindsight, he should have been glad to be able to witness drama at his birthday party, after all, everybody would be talking about it for days.

"I don't really care about arguments or commotions," she admitted bitterly. "not ever since Dumbledore decided not to make me Head-Girl."

Then, her mind was changed immediately as a girl yelled. "Come on! It's the Slytherins!"

She shared a shocked look with Sirius, mouthing, 'What?' before leaving him there, stomping over to witness whatever was going on.

The commotion was between a pair of students in green—and Scarlet stood on her tiptoes to glance at the area. Loud chanting followed, "Fight! Fight!"

Scarlet slithered down the crowd of people and stood beside a bored Everest, a cigarette lazily hanging between her index and middle finger.

"What is it this time?" Scarlet scoffed, irritated at the absolutely humiliating behaviour belonging to Regulus Black and Evan Rosier at each other's throats.

"It's the third time this week," Dorcas mumbled to the two, a concerned look on her face. "What's gotten into the two?"

"I know right," Everest spoke in an embarrassed tone, already fed up with the matter. "I swear to Salazar's soul, our reputation's hanging by the thread."

"Bloody hell—fuck!" One of the Slytherin girls—Scarlet swore her name was Astoria Ambrose or something—behind Regulus yelled angrily as Evan backhanded the Black across the face, hard. "Enough, that is absurd! Fuckin' idiots!" The redheaded Beater, Ambrose, screamed. With short, utterly unbrushed hair and messy attire, she was unpresentable at best. Yet, she definitely knew how to shout.

"Get out of the way, Astoria!" Someone else shouted at her for getting in the middle of the way, and Evan grabbed a fistful of the Black's raven hair to tug at them.

"Hell, they fight like girls," Everest muttered under her breath and then shared a wide-eyed look with Scarlet. "That sounded misogynistic, I apologise."

"No need, you're right." The blonde told her.

"How many times—!" Regulus breathlessly spoke in a raspy tone, volume of his voice rising. "Mind your own fucking business!"

"Mind my—" the opposition let out a peal of mocking laughter at that statement, "Get a grip on reality, Black—you've lost your damn mind!" Rosier yelled at Regulus whose nose flared in intense anger. "Worthless, treacherous coward—!"

"Why don't you shut the fuck up?" Regulus lunged forward again, and elbowed Francis Greengrass in the process when the boy tried to put a stop to it. Black shoved Evan harshly by the shoulders. Before the blonde boy could retract, Regulus punched him in the guts and shot him down to the floor.

"Get him! GET HIM!" James roared loudly, clapping his hands together. "No, no, the other way—hit him in the jaw, Black! Yeah! Push him off, Rosier, hit him back!"

"JAMES! YOU'RE HEADBOY!" Lily screamed at him, slapping his arm.

Whilst Potter was busy giving animated instructions to the pair on how to attack each other, Scarlet's eyes wandered over to Sirius who held a soft-eyed gaze, lips parting and concern littering his face.

Sirius never liked loud noises. No, not sounds of laughter and mischief filling the hallway, but the shouts within arguments and fights. Especially when it involved his family. Because it would bring him right back to the Black house whilst his mother's yells turn into a plate being thrown at his face.

Nobody cared about that though. Not everyone knew, and not everyone understood.

Scarlet faced Everest and tapped her shoulder, "Break it out, will you?"

Everest nodded, stomping forward and screaming her lungs out at the two boys who held their heads low in sudden shame. Scarlet moved to Sirius, grabbed his arm, and bolted from the scene. Nobody said a word.

Perhaps their attention was elsewhere. Perhaps people assumed the two of them strutted away from possible threat—situations usually escalated when Everest Chasseur got involved.

But to Sirius, the gesture meant much more. To Sirius, someone was able to see through the mask he wore vigorously and pull him away from being haunted by the terrorising thoughts caused by something as common as school disagreements and shouts.

To Sirius, it meant somebody cared. Somebody made an effort. Somebody held onto him. When he was lost in the darkness, a blob of luminescence pulled him out of it.

"HE JUST HAD TO PULL THAT STUNT AT MY birthday party!" Sirius scoffed with a scowl, quite annoyed at the notion that took place. "He just can't stand it when the attention is on me, that spoiled brat."

"I don't know what's gotten into the two," Scarlet poured Sirius a glass of wine, the two of them sprawled over the red sofa of the Gryffindor Common Room, "they used to be practically inseparable." She spoke, referring to Evan and Regulus. The two boys were never to be seen without one another.

"Well, by tomorrow, we'll get to know the story from either Marlene or Chasseur." Sirius shrugged, knowing the two of them were practically detectives.

Scarlet sighed, eyes lingering on him. She wanted to say something, but every idea ran dry on the tip of her tongue.

"I can't believe I wanted to leave my own birthday party," he scoffed, a look of tiredness in his eyes. "I love parties."

When he sat up half-way through, awkwardly shifting and slumping back onto the sofa, the force of his weary action caused the wine to splash out of the wine-glass; the glass dropped with a soft thud against the carpet. From the harsh impact, half of the drink spilled over his shirt, and droplets of it soaked into her dress although the colour matched perfectly.

"GODRIC, SHIT, SHIT!" He cursed, hearing her audibly gasp at the consequence. He shot an awful number of cursed words as Scarlet leaned forward and grabbed a napkin, pressing it against his shirt which was now half burgundy.

She met his eyes as her hands roamed over his chest over the fabric of the napkin and his thin shirt.

And the boiling blood in her veins rushed to her cheeks—she was not sure whether it was fluster or annoyance.

      Must have been an annoyance.

The fluorescent lights of the Gryffindor Common room flickered under their soft eyes. Her movement slowed and he carefully placed his palm over her hand, making her drop the handkerchief and stop moving completely.

With his soft skin on hers and figures as close as possible, Scarlet found it hard to breathe.

The next words left Scarlet's lips thickly and hesitantly, and she could not believe she actually said it. "Want to forget about everything else?"

Sirius arched an incredulous brow, blinking and lips parting softly. "I do." After a small beat of silence, "And what do you want," asked the Black.

Anything. Anything with you. She could have said but decided not to.

Within the blink of an eye, capable of being mistaken for nothing, Scarlet re-positioned herself and straddled him. Legs on either side of his hips and hands gripping his shoulders as she settled herself on his lap. Her lips ghosted over his, and he ached for more of her touch.

With a dark look and a wicked smirk, Sirius closed the distance between their lips, holding her in place by the neck. Her chest exploded at the feeling, and a shock of electricity shot through all of her veins, coursing through every one of them and sending her heart to the moon. Her fingers tangled in the ends of his hair.

This had to be the best birthday gift.

His hands roamed all over her figure. Fingers tracing the skin above her chest, around her collarbone, and at the tip of the v-neck that dropped quite low. She was so entirely swept up in the feeling of it all, that she wanted his touch imprinted on her soul. Never let him go.

With a grip on her waist, he pulled her closer to him and her hips adjusted herself better, causing a grunt to emit from his throat that vibrated onto her lips. His hands gripped her thighs with a bruising pressure.

The blood in their veins ran cold when a loud shout of horror forced them apart.

"WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK?" James Potter's voice came in from the entrance hole of the Gryffindor Common Room. "What the fuck?"

Scarlet gasped suddenly, prying her hands off of his neck and getting off his lap, slouching down beside him on the sofa to see the rest of the three Marauders standing by the entrance, looking at the pair as they've grown three heads.

"What in Merlin's name is going on here?" Remus exclaimed, gesturing between the two. Peter hid his shorter frame before Remus, trying to suppress a loud laugh with much difficulty.

"Oh, dear Godric, I feel faint." James put his palm against his head, and instantly fell to the carpet, sprawled on the ground and unresponsive.

"Salazar... and I thought you were dramatic," Scarlet turned to Sirius to whisper, his hand still in hers.

"Care to explain?" Remus folded his arms over his chest, ignoring James who lay on the floor and trying to hide his amusement. "This better not be some sort of twisted birthday gift."

Scarlet could practically hear the nervous thump of Sirius' heartbeat and noticed the discreet way his fingers tightened around hers.

"It was a heat of the moment. Really." She told Lupin, eyes wide and she thickly gulped.

"No, no..." Sirius shook his head immediately, watching her snap her head towards him.

"Sirius—"

"It's okay, I should tell them," Sirius smiled at her softly, and Remus raised a brow at the adoration-smitten look he was giving her.

"Were you two about to have sex?" Peter blurted out, earning a loud gasp from everyone in the room. James eventually sat up, back against the table and his eyes widened.

"No way, you just said the word." James told him.

"I'm not ten," Peter rubbed his neck, a frown playing on his lips.

Remus grimaced slightly, all eyes on Black and Bridget once again as they sat quietly. "Come on guys... that was incredibly insensitive," he continued after an exhale. "We play chess on that couch." He groaned loudly.

"So, it was not a one-time thing," James concluded, squinting his eyes. "You guys are not drunk, or anything."

"Prongs, mate, don't be dense," Sirius sighed. "I like her, and she likes me—wait, you do, right? You like me." Sirius' gaze snapped to her.

"No."

"Whatever, so, here we are," he rolled his eyes; Sirius mocked the situation by gesturing an exploding bomb with his hands, making a 'boom' noise. Scarlet's eyes shot to his at his nonchalant behaviour, and she remained fiddling with the silver rings on her fingers.

"So, that—that's it? That was so underwhelming!" Remus threw his hands up, exclaiming a little loudly.

"Remus, just sit down," Sirius sighed, rubbing the bridge of his nose. "I'll tell you guys everything, I will."

"Sit down on what? The sex-couch?"

Peter laughed at that despite the momentum of the situation.

"I can't get the image of you two in that position out of my head," James looked at them, the shock on his face not disappearing. "You brought in a Slytherin into our tower and you're shagging her?"

"I'm literally sitting right here," Scarlet snapped back, her patience wearing thin. She should not have expected the Marauders to react in the same way Everest did—after all, there was a reason Sirius was wry about revealing their secret. Thanks to whatever higher force existed, the entrance swung open again to reveal a pair of giggling girls—arms swung around each other's bodies as they came to a rapid stop.

"No one told me we were having a separate party," Marlene pointed an accusatory index finger towards the boys. "Come on, Sirius, you can't vanish from your own party."

"This is not a party," Remus confirmed quickly. "We caught Bridget and Sirius shagging."

"WHAT?" Everest exclaimed so loudly, that Remus swore his ears fell off. "WHAT DO YOU MEAN THEY WERE SHAGGING?"

"No one was shagging!" Sirius spoke over everyone, exhausted from the escalation of the events. "Not this time at least."

"SIRIUS!" Scarlet groaned, throwing her head back against the couch.

"The girl in our dorm the other night, it was her?" Peter gaped.

"We weren't shagging then either, we were just—" Scarlet started, only to be cut off by Sirius.

"Snogging. A lot of it." Sirius said with a proud grin, nodding arrogantly. "We only did it once."

"They do not need to know that—" Scarlet was quickly cut off by the booming voice of Everest.

"You're coming with me," Everest marched forward, grabbing the girl and prying Sirius's invasive hands off of her figure, making her leave the room.

"When did this even start?" James wondered irritably.

"That was... intense." Marlene hiccuped, extremely high on the sugar from all the butterbeer she had.

"Unnecessarily intense," Sirius grumpily said, turning to his friends. "Don't act so unsupportive, especially when she's present."

Sirius saw Marlene's eyes squinting in his direction. "Careful there, Black, you sound like you're in lo—"

"Look, Pads, we don't care if you're shagging a Slytherin—you can tell us, you know." Remus raised a brow, arms folded as he stared down at Sirius's sitting figure.

"How did it happen?" James curiously asked, his voice no longer judgemental. "We assumed you were pretending for the sake of it—were you lying to us?"

"Pretending?" Marlene gaped, eyes lingering between the boys. "What do you mean?"

Remus was about to answer when Sirius cut through.

"We were pretending for a time, it's a long story," Sirius said as Marlene sat next to him, giving him her full attention. "And somewhere along the way... it started to mean a little more, I guess."

"You guess?" James rolled his eyes. "You're shagging her."

"He shags everyone!" Marlene exclaimed.

"This isn't like the other times—" Sirius was interrupted by Peter's curious question.

"When, exactly?" Peter asked. "When did it start?"

"Just before the summer break," Sirius muttered.

"Do you love her?" Marlene blurted out the question everyone in the room was wondering.

Sirius' eyes went as wide as a deer's. "What? No—no! It's not that serious," he scoffed, slumping back onto the sofa and receiving nods from everyone in the room, especially Marlene who gave him a suspicious look, a calculating expression on her features.

"Don't you worry, Pads, we don't blame you," Remus shrugged, arms still folded as he shared a look with the other two boys. "She's smart, stunning and sharp-tongued—"

"Sharp-tongued in more than one way, I'd presume," Marlene smirked but it vanished the moment she noticed the deadly glare Sirius shot her.

"I'll be keeping my eye on you two," James mockingly pointed at him, at times, the overprotectiveness really does kick in. "She's a Bridget. She's a Slytherin."

"Well-spotted," Remus muttered, looking away as he rolled his eyes.

"Thank you for the awful reminder, Prongs, I somehow missed that." The sarcasm from Sirius caught the Potter off guard. "I'm not exactly fond of the fact that she's a Slytherin either. 'Wish she wasn't."

Marlene rolled her eyes instantly, "That's incredibly rude, Black."

"Just because you're all effusive with Chasseur—" Sirius refused to meet her scolding eyes.

"That's got nothing to do with it, Black," Marlene scoffed, shooting him a look of disbelief. "Look, don't use her House against her. It's insensitive and you'll only hurt her feelings." The moment Sirius was defensive about being in love with the Bridget, Marlene had a plethora of dubious thoughts. She had a feeling that Sirius wouldn't mind loving Scarlet if it didn't mean loving a Slytherin.

"I'm only saying—you don't like people like her, I hope you know what you're doing." James shrugged nonchalantly, and Marlene and Sirius stared at him in disbelief. "And I'm saying that with all due respect." Peter slapped his palm against his forehead in defeat and Remus let his head fall forward at Potter's unbelievable notion.

"Thank you for a gorgeous birthday," Sirius muttered under his breath with a roll of his eyes and left the common room in an irritated manner.

"YOU LOST YOUR VIRGINITY TO SIRIUS BLACK?" Everest dwelled on the thought, unzipping her dress and watching Scarlet brush her tangled hair.

"I could've lost it beforehand, you wouldn't know." Scarlet muttered quietly.

"Did you shag someone before him?" Everest asked with an intense gaze.

A beat of silence passed as the blonde forced out. "No."

Everest's shoulders slumped, "This is... interesting."

"I don't know what I'm doing with my life, Eve, I don't want to mess anything up," she nervously told her. "My mother was really alarmed about the situation—something to do with her concerns about the Black family."

"The Blacks are a family of proper madness, S, your mother's concerns are reasonable," Everest shrugged, getting into her pyjamas. "But we all know Sirius is the opposite in every way.

"I know," she sighed softly. "I just... I don't know how much this all means to him—I don't know what's real anymore."

Everest was the one and only—out of the entire population—to acknowledge and understand the irrational fear that ran through Scarlet's mind when it came to the idea of affection. She was afraid of letting someone in, allowing someone to see the worst parts of her because she thought she was unlovable, that she would lose all her strings beyond her reaches the moment she got close.

"What if I'm misunderstanding all the signals he's giving me—what if one day, he realises I'm not worth any of it and he remembers we're only in this for fun, it doesn't mean anything at all." It felt refreshing, allowing her worrisome thoughts to come out.

Scarlet was no stranger to cursed love. She met the eyes of a devil the moment she was ripped out of her mother's womb, and for a moment, she loved her father. She hated herself for it.

      She wanted an escape.

"Then, talk to him." Said Eve.

"That'll work?"

"It always works." Everest confirmed, sending her an encouraging, tight-lipped smile.
