The Twentieth Letter
Jun. 12, 1942
My Darling Beloved James,
There is no one else, I shall have you know, and there shall never be another. To me, there shall only ever be us. If not, then I should prefer living in solitude to falling into another's arms.
By God, James, your words are a punishment I did not know I wanted. I understand why this is to be the final letter sent or received, but know that I shall long for another regardless. That is to say that I prefer the slow death you would give me to my torturous existence without it.
For now, I look forward to experiencing your and my imaginings when we meet again.
I shall continue to pretend that you lay beside me when I sleep, and I hope you know that my life has been nothing until your post script- now I may live and die knowing that I amounted to something.
Yours,
Steven
P.S. I love you
