#SIXTY EIGHT
"You are not going to answer that call! Don't touch the phone... no hand it over to me." Aisha got up from the bed and snatched away Jannah's phone from her grasp.
Jannah poured her lips like a chided child. "But he's been calling for two days straight. The guards outside aren't allowing him inside his own home."
Aisha shrugged a shoulder, she is using Jannah to distract herself from the turmoil her life is about to undergo. Or, had undergone. She refused to go back to live with her mother knowing the woman is going to keep accusing her of ruining herself. She won't understand but they've consoled her that she just needed time, she will give her that before they have one on one conversation. They cannot keep living like that as mother and daughter anyway.
She got discharged two days ago and Ammar had been by her side all the while. She wouldn't say she's been in love with him from the beginning, there were feelings here and there but the guy managed to make her fall hopelessly in love with her after confessing in the hospital. It took all the effort in her not to kiss him, it was out of instinct and not something she would've done on a normal day basis. She's never thought she would want to kiss a man in her life. It was so ewish at the beginning but now, she wants that and more.
Now all she wants to do is be with him twenty four seven. Is that weird and just a first timer's thing? For she feels so strongly for him that if anything were to go wrong between them, she'd kill him if it is his fault. He's made her like this. Utterly possessive, obsessed with the notion of being with him for the rest of her life while picturing their children in the future.
That is totally absurd for someone who's just had a miscarriage of some unknown pregnancy. A woman who was raped but cannot remember a thing that had happened that would result to her having a baby in her womb. They are yet to clear what's happened but she knew Ammar is investigating whatever it was that happened five weeks ago in her life. They've tracked back using the calendar for she's forgotten about those bits.
She then remembered that that was the week her half sister got married. There are things she couldn't remember so Ammar forced her to recall all she could by bribing her with a chilled Sprite yesterday while Jannah went to beg her mother-in-law to allow Adnan into the house.
"Your sister's wedding right? Yes! Now tell me any weird thing that's happened during the event or whatever it was you were not comfortable with." Ammar sat in front of her on a coffee table, bracing his elbows on both of his knees as he watched her with keen eyes.
Since his confession, Aisha had started developing with unknown shyness she is not really proud of. Why should she be shy? This is Ammar Ibrahim Attahir! That insolent child that made work hard and still calls her a maid when he doesn't feel like being romantic. And she likes it. Then why is she blushing under his scrutiny? The other Aisha would've glowered at the way he was making her all jittery.
But she swallowed a thick gob of saliva in her throat and said. "I don't think anything out of ordinary had happened. It was all tiring..." she trailed off with a frown.
Ammar had kept quiet, waited patiently for her to unravel things herself. She then snapped her eyes to his as if she's solved all the puzzles but she hadn't, there is more than meets the eye.
"I think I know when it all happened." She murmured, her lips still slackened as she put in the pieces of the difficult puzzle.
He gave her an encouraging nod. "Go on. Say anything and everything, I will not judge you."
"When the entire event was over, Bilal was not around so he booked me a hotel room to stay alone instead of sharing a room with the half sisters he knew I disliked. He wouldn't allow me to leave and trusted no one to take me back home. So I woke up the next morning with another smell in the room but there was no trace of anybody. There was no blood on the bed though I noticed that the mattress was extra ruffled, I didn't give it much thought. That is all I can remember..." she frowned, trying her best to recall any other thing but zilch.
Ammar gave her a smile, took one of her hands in both of his. "Don't stress yourself. I think the person gave you drugs and you couldn't remember anything. Don't worry. I'll go investigate in the hotel and find out what'd happened."
That was yesterday, she is still waiting for some feedback from him. She's been staring at her phone the entire time till Adnan Ibrahim Attahir started disturbing her best friend with his many phone calls. He's been doing that for the two days he wasn't allowed to see her straight. Aisha is in full support of that. The man should learn some lessons before Jannah is given to him. He should deserve her.
"I know he has been calling for ages but we won't answer him now. He hasn't learned any lesson. I'm glad Hajiya is not permitting him into the house. She did a great thing changing the guards to ones that don't know him." Aisha grinned evilly because she gave Hajiya Maimuna the idea.
"But... why? I miss him. What if he decides that he is done chasing me?" Jannah wondered in a disgruntled tone, her brows coming together.
Aisha shrugged her shoulders again. "Then he doesn't deserve you. If he really loves you, he'll keep working on his romantic skills."
Jannah rolled her eyes. Romance? Is she talking about her husband or someone else? "Maybe you've forgotten who Dracs really is. He is not a romantic person and I like him that way."
"Are you for real?" Aisha's eyes widened looking at her like she's lost a few screws up in her head. The guy's changed her completely.
Jannah sat down with a huff, relaxing back. "Yes. If I force him to be romantic, I'd vomit everyday at the mere thought of it. I don't want that. He will look weird and stupid and foolish. Ew."
Aisha laughed hard, throwing her head back wholeheartedly guffawing. Jannah smiled, she hadn't seen that laugh since the day Aisha was admitted in the hospital. It is so good seeing her back to herself and not slipping into depression after the traumatic experience. Ammar wouldn't let her, Jannah was also there at every step of the way so is Hajiya Maimuna and Nawal.
"God, you are so funny though I get your point." She faked a shudder, her face scrunching up. "I don't want to see that sight too, honestly. But what do you want right now? We should just give him the chance after only two days? I don't think so."
Jannah thought about it for a minute then grinned. "I can try and spend few more days without him but he should talk to his mother. She should allow him into the house."
Hajiya Maimuna walked into the room at that moment, her voice ethereal and excited. "Oh, I talked to him on the phone just few minutes ago and you won't believe what he's told me. The impertinent child."
Aisha looks suddenly curious, eyes shimmering with radiant glow. "What did he say? And Hajiyan Allah, he is nowhere a child. That one is a hotblooded man."
Hajiya Maimuna flipped her off with a wave of her hand, delirious to share her news. "Oh, I know that very much. His wife is pregnant after all."
Jannah blushed beneath her fervent words, she is suddenly at loss of words. Remembering what's happened at the hospital the day Aisha was supposed to be discharged, she became more flustered. The doctor walked into the room and stared at her for a longest time before she smiled at everyone in the room including Aisha's mother, Nawal, Ammar, Aisha herself and Hajiya Maimuna. Jannah almost clicked the pieces because of the symptoms she's seen but didn't want to have false hopes. Maybe she was thinking that because she's lost her daughter and is lonely.
"You don't know about it right?" She asked in a mysterious voice, coming towards Jannah still holding fixed eye contact.
She's confused everyone in the room. "No, I don't know. What is it?" Jannah's heart was beating hysterically beneath her chest.
Doctor Shafa'atu clapped her hands for a second then curves around to acknowledge the people in the room. "I am ninety nine percent sure Jannah is expecting."
It was quiet for a bit then Nawal stood up. "You mean she is pregnant?" She beamed, her eyes twinkling from the doctor to her sister-in-law.
"Yes. But we should conduct a test to be sure." She said, yawing around to check on Aisha who's stopping herself from leaping on her best friend.
Jannah expecting a baby days after she's lost her daughter? This sure is a gift from Allah. There is no doubt she is going to be named after Imara if it is a baby girl. But the happiness here is, Jannah is pregnant! The test took place and they found out that she was seven weeks pregnant and there was no sign of it. Allah does not make you cry except for good. So do not be sad, every matter has good.
"Yeah, not a child at all. Now what happened? What did he say to you? I'm dripping with curiosity." Aisha brought back the topic.
"He told me that he was going to send police, SAS, operation yaki, marines and even navy to raid over the house. The man sounded so serious. I won't be surprised if they arrive here any moment." She laughed along with the other two young ladies around her.
"Wow, I'm slowly loving this romantic side of his. See his way of being romantic? Sending forces to get you." Aisha giggled when Jannah glowered at her but she could not help smiling. Oh, her Dracs.
"Mom, you should allow him to come here so you two can talk one on one. Explain things to him. You know he won't ever know what to do if we leave him like that. The guy is extremely clueless." Jannah suggested, cutting in Hajiya Maimuna and Aisha's gist about her husband.
"You're right. I'll talk to him."
Adnan paced around the room with a large scowl on his face waiting for his mother to come down. He should've waited until later in the afternoon or when the sun is out but he couldn't. When he saw her message that he could come the next day, he drove there straight to the villa immediately after praying Fajr. They better allow him to see his wife now or this house won't fit them all. He won't take no more from anyone.
He only let things pass because knowing his mother, she won't let things go easily. It would've been an easy job coming into the villa if he had so much wishes but he listens to his mother at all times. Not even the new guards could've stopped him. Now that she's permitted him, he will extract all the information from her. What do they want from him? Why is Jannah not answering his phone calls? Is she really done with him?
His mother came down dressed still in her nightgown, a silky brown gown that reached her ankle topped with a matching robe. She scowled when she saw him in the middle of the room, her eyes still closing from sleep. His scowl didn't falter even as she sat down on the couch without acknowledging him for the longest time.
"I asked you to come but didn't say you can come around five in the morning. You are not here for a duel, are you?" She commenced in her sleepy voice that sounds groggy.
Adnan sat down on the couch opposite her. "I'm here to see my wife. I want to take her back home. She's stayed here for too long."
Hajiya Maimuna raised a brow at that. "For too long? Who said she was going to go back with you? She's said she's left a note for you and it explains everything between you and her."
"No, it doesn't. I've read it but it does not make any sense to me. Where is she? She should tell me about it herself, maybe I'll understand her then." He answered almost immediately, his forehead furrowed deeply.
If Hajiya Maimuna was shocked at the open display of feelings and emotions, she didn't show it. She's never seen him that before, she hid her galvanization pretty good.
"Well... she doesn't want to talk to you. She is done with anything related to you because you disrupt her peace with your indifference. And she thinks you don't know what to do or what you want. Thirty four years old for goodness sake." Hajiya Maimuna shrugged her shoulders and lay her back supine on the leather couch.
"Really?"
"Really."
Adnan thought for a few seconds then lowered his voice. "Is that what you want me to do? Divorce her? We should go our separate ways?"
Is Adnan Ibrahim Attahir trying to blackmail her emotionally? Another first!
Hajiya Maimuna sighed, playing with her phone in both of her hands. "To be honest with you, I don't want that. I don't want your ex wives to be two, one is enough. But that is what she wants because your marriage isn't making her happy. She is tired of the life you want to offer her. And she's lost her daughter, that was the toughest thing any parent could go through. When that happened, you weren't there to comfort her! You both would've comforted one another but you ran away like a coward. That is not what husbands are supposed to do. I will support whatever she wants, Adnan, she's been through so much."
Adnan didn't say anything, only watched his slightly growing nails restlessly. He is not going to lose Jannah. She knows everything about him, even his darkest secret. Not only that, he's realized that he won't ever be able to live without Jannah in his life. Life is going to be meaningless now without her in it, he cannot even picture that.
"I need her." He muttered in a strangled tone, his expression yawing pained.
"You do? Then you'll have to earn her. She's been yours for years but you didn't deserve her the whole time. If you really need her, do something to earn her attraction again and love...."
"Something?" He frowned at her, puzzled by her words.
A voice came from behind them, Adnan was mildly startled but that wouldn't be said to his mother who jumped and glared at Nawal. "Something means you should be at least romantic though we don't expect much from you. We girls love romantic gestures, they make us feel loved. Sending flowers, handwritten cards, cute desserts, her favorite food that is if you know any and... reply all her messages!"
Adnan winced at the accusation that entered her voice when she said the last four words. He's read those messages for the past two days more times than he would want to count. He couldn't go to work. Trying all his strategies to get his mother to allow him inside the villa. He thought he was going to see Jannah but with the way things are going, he won't see her. His mother is hellbent on making him work for it.
"Yeah, things like that. And also be very open about your feelings for her. She wants reassurance that you won't go back to your old ways. Impress her, bro, I know you can do it." Nawal added cheerfully then frowned when he shoot her a glare.
"I was talking to your mother."
"I'm her daughter and your wife's best friend. I can tell her to ignore you and she will so be careful, bro. Now get on work."
