#54 - I wear hearing aids
Hello,
I wear hearing aids and the thing is that I'm embarrassed to even show them. I always keep my hair down because people who knows I wear it treat me as if I don't understand anything they're saying. Like damnnn, I'm wearing hearing aids so I can hear. Most of the time I need to do my hair up but I usually cover my ears up which just makes my hair look like a mess.
Any tips on being confident with it?
Thank you x

Hola!
Let's get right on with it, ey?
Unfortunately I don't particularly know anyone who wears hearing aids, but I'll try my very best to help you out. I've a few tips for you:
1. Explain your situation
You say that the people who know you've hearing aids treat you ask if you don't hear anything they're saying. One thing you may need to realize that they probably aren't doing this in bad taste but rather because they don't know that they're to treat you normally. I understand where your frustration comes from, but then again you should never assume that everyone knows everything.
As a result, I suggest that you explain to these friends how the hearing aids work and let them know that you'd appreciate it if they spoke to you normally, as if they were talking to anyone else. That will hopefully clean up the air.
In time, you may find yourself getting more comfortable with them and therefore letting others know about them. You'll find that you'll have to explain your situation often, but always remember that they just don't know how to act around you and once you tell them, it'll be all good.
2. Once you're comfortable with them, others will be too
A lot of the time as humans we tend to hate talking about our insecurities. We get riled up when people mention them. This used to be me, too. But you need to ensure that it's not a taboo subject with you because other people will get really awkward around it. When you're finally ready to show them off, people will have questions, guaranteed. You should be open to them and actually just be honest in answering them. If you're comfortable talking about your insecurities, people won't even realize that you're insecure about it and everyone will even forget that you have some in the first place.
3. Pixie cut? Bangs?
You say that you always have to put your hair over your ears when you tie it so that you can hide the hearing aids. Have you ever thought about getting bangs or a pixie cut that will naturally cover your ears? This will mean that you look so much neater and everything. I don't know if a haircut is a big step for you; nor do I know of what race you are, so if this doesn't work with you, then you can completely discard this suggestion. However, if you're unsure, I've put up an image of the type of haircut I've in mind. It's a pixie cut I think, and they're very cool - celebrities like Emma Watson, Jennifer Lawrence, Victoria Beckham have rocked them.
You could possibly talk to your hairstylist about a possible style that can suit you and help you cover your ears.
4. Learn to love yourself
Regardless of it all, at the end of the day, the hearing aids are part of who you are. You might find that it's never that big of a deal than you thought it was, and that not everyone will judge you or see you differently because of them. Many people will understand and will treat you the same. As I mentioned, there may be a few questions or comments or remarks, but that's because people don't know how to handle a friend with hearing aids and everything.
It's nothing to be ashamed of, really. One day, when you're brave enough, just tie your hair up nicely and see how it goes. Be confident about it and feel good for yourself. You may be surprised: you may actually inspire someone because of your confidence. Even though it's scary at first, you can fake it until you make it, girl!
The most important thing is to love and be comfortable with yourself. You may actually find that it was not that big of a deal in the first place.
Hope I helped!
