   Paws pounded the ground and snarling sounded behind me as the patrol ran for their lives.

Stupid Foxes! I thought furiously.
How could they have been smart enough to stay downwind?

They had surprised the patrol made up of him, Quickwater, and Swiftwind. They were running now, and starting to get tiered.

All of a sudden, I saw the ground starting to slope down and bushes lined in a circle.
The camp! The foxes will cause chaos!

"Swiftwind! Quickwater! Spilt up!" I order. Swiftwind nods and veers to the side, and Quickwater swerves to the other side.

I keep running straight, hoping the foxes might follow one of the she-cats. However, they stayed hot in my tail.

Great StarClan!

Soon, I came to the edge of the cliff. The foxes was getting closer.
As one fox leaped at me, I ducked and he soared over my head. The others tried to stop but tumbled over the edge.

And right into the camp.

Oh no. The kits!

Lucky for the foxes, they fell over the low part of the camp, not injured enough to run away.
I peered over the edge and saw the foxes advance. They were heading for the nursery.

All the warriors are on patrol! I thought fearfully. And the elders can't fight!

I knew what I had to do. But if it didn't go as planned, I would probably get injured. Or even worse, die.

I took a deep breath and...

Leaped.

Time seemed to stop as the wind buffeted my belly fur. Swiftwind came running, and gave me a look of horror.

StarClan, help me!

I fell. And fell. The fox looked up, and fear flashed in its eyes. I stretched my paws out and landed on the fox. The others watched from the distance, waiting for the first strike.

It shrieked and collapsed beneath me, and my paws hit ground. Pain lanced through me as the fox's teeth connected with my tail.
I leaped up and saw Bluelight, a queen, staring horrified from the nursery.
Three tiny kits meowed from behind her.

When I saw them, something stirred inside me. A desire to protect the future of this Clan.

I'm ThunderClan's deputy. It's time to do my duty.

The fox batted at my ears and I ducked. I swiped my paw at the fox's paws and it fell sideways. I scratched my claws gain and again across its belly until it shrieked and struggled to its paws.

Wailing, it sprinted out of the camp, limping.
The others leaped at me and I stepped aside. One of the foxes flew past me, and the other stopped and raked its claws across my ears.

I batted it away and the last one leaped at me. It pinned me down and I pushed my hind legs against its belly. It tumbled away and I didn't waste a moment.

I ran at it and pinned my claws against its throat. It struggled and broke through, running out of the camp.

I did it. I thought happily, my head filled with stars.

I saved ThunderClan.
