Chapter 18: The Final Reveal
When the girls arrived, they approached cautiously, stopping when they saw Tyson's body by the pool. They swore before Sidney's phone rang.
"What?" She asks when she answers.
This time Sarah couldn't hear Ghostface. Sidney picked up a metal detector near them and nodded to Sarah that she was gonna use it on her. Sarah nodded and stood still while Sidney scanned her, the detector only buzzing from Sarah's locket. Sidney then handed it to Sarah, who scanned her, the detector again buzzing from Sidney's necklace. Ghostface must not have been satisfied, as Sidney took the detector back and scanned the leg where she hid the gun, causing the buzzing again. She then removed the gun and threw it in the pool, likely on Ghostface's orders.
"No fucking way." Sidney says after a pause, "How do we know they're not dead already?"
Another pause before they slowly entered the house, seeing Dewey and Gale tied up. Sidney hung up the phone and the girls rushed to help their friends.
"Sid. Sarah." Dewey says.
"Where is he?" Sarah asks.
"I don't know." Dewey answers just as Ghostface appears. "He's right there!"
Ghostface attacked the girls, knocking them aside. He then pulled out his knife, looking at Dewey and Gale, just as Sidney pulled out a second gun she was hiding.
"Think again." She says, "It's your turn to scream, asshole." She hot Ghostface multiple times, knocking him down, before she and Sarah went back to helping Dewey and Gale.
"Where is he?" Gale asks, as Ghostface had vanished when they weren't looking.
Sidney readied her gun while Sarah continued to untie Dewey and Gale. Suddenly, Kincaid appeared.
"I heard shots." He says, "Tyson's dead. What's going on?"
"What are you doing here, Kincaid?" Sidney asks.
"Looking for you." Kincaid responds, "Tyson said there was a party here tonight, and I thought 'uh-oh. Third act celebration.' Thought I better check it out."
"Alone?" Sarah asks, "Where's your partner?"
"Miss Prescott, Miss Loomis. I'm here to help." Kincaid says, "Put the gun down."
Sidney slowly did so as Ghostface attacked again, this time from behind Sidney. Kincaid pushed her out of the way. He fought the killer as Sidney hit her head on the chairs Dewey and Gale were tied to, and crashed into Sarah. The girls slowly got up and Sidney fired another shot, missing the killer. She tried again, but the gun just clicked.
"You want us, motherfucker?" She asks.
"Come and get us." Sarah adds before the girls take off, Ghostface after them.
They ran down a hallway and into a room, locking the door so Ghostface couldn't get in. At first, they thought they were trapped when they didn't see another door, but Sidney noticed something different on one of the bookshelves. She tried pulling on it, but nothing happened.
"Sarah, help me out." She says, and Sarah also tries pulling on the door. Again, nothing, so they started pulling books off the shelves until they found the one that opens the door. They quickly ran inside and closed it before closing another door and locking it in case Ghostface got through.
After a short pause, they heard a woman's voice, calling for Sidney. They followed it and found themselves in the screening room, where videos of Sidney's mother played on the screen. That's when they realized the voice was supposed to be Sidney's mother.
"It's just me, Sid." The voice says, "Oh, I was so pretty. Everybody loved me. Have you missed me, Sidney?" The figure from the studio appeared again. "Would you like to hold me one last time? What's the matter? What are you staring at? Don't you remember your-"
"Mother?" Ghostface says, removing the bag to reveal the white mask and black robe.
Sidney and Sarah ran back to the door they came from, but it locked in front of them. They ran for another door, but it was also locked.
"You girls aren't going anywhere." Ghostface says, "It's time you, Sidney, came to terms with me and with Mother. Maybe you never knew her at all, Sidney. Maybe you just can't get past the surface of things." Ghostface then ripped open his robe to reveal he was wearing a bulletproof vest before closing it again.
"Who the hell are you?" Sidney asks.
"The other half of you." Ghostface answers, "I searched for a mother too, an actress named Rina Reynolds. Tried to find her my whole life. And four years ago, I actually tracked her down. Knocked at her door, thinking she'd welcome me with open arms, but she had a new life and a new name: Maureen Prescott. You were the only child she claimed, Sidney. She shut me out in the cold forever. Her own son." Ghostface then removed his mask to reveal himself.
"Roman Bridger, director. And brother. She slammed the door in my face. She said I was Rina's child, and Rina was dead. Then it struck me. What a good idea. So I watched her. I made a little home movie. A little family film. It seems Maureen- Mom. She really got around. I mean... Cotton was one thing. Everybody knew about that. But Sarah, your father? That was the key. Your brother Billy didn't like seeing your daddy in my film too much. He didn't like it at all. But once I supplied the motivation, all the kid needed was a few pointers. Have a partner to sell out in case you get caught, find someone to frame. It was like he was making a movie."
"You. This is all because of you." Sarah says.
"I'm a director, Sarah. I direct. I had no idea they were gonna make a film of their own. What a film it turned out to be, huh? I mean introducing Sidney and Sarah, the victims. Sidney and Sarah, the survivors. Sidney, the star and Sarah the main supporter!"
"Fine, you got what you wanted, heroes and villain face to face." Sidney says, "Well you know what happens now? The villain dies!"
"Exactly! But I'm not the villain, girls, you are." Roman says. He then opens a closet and dragged out Milton tied up and with tape over his mouth. "Here he is..." Roman continues, "The man who gave away your mother's innocence, Sid. Huh? What he did to her made her a slut. Didn't it? Huh? She never recovered from that night, right here in this room. They fucked her three ways from Sunday. Ruined her life. Ruined yours too, didn't it, Sid? And by extension, screwed yours up pretty bad, right, Sarah? Do you girls hate him? Come on, I know you do. I'm sure you do." Roman then pulled out a device with an audio recording and played it.
"We know who you are." Sarah's voice plays.
"We know what you did to my mother, and I want you to understand, we're gonna make you pay!" Sidney's voice played for the rest of the recording.
"That's what the police are gonna find on Milton's answering machine, right next to his lifeless, mutilated corpse." Roman says. Milton made sound before Roman removed the tape.
"You don't have to do this, Roman." Milton says, "Just tell me what you want. I can make it happen. Any picture. Name your budget. Script approval. Final cut!"
"I already have it." Roman says before slicing Milton's throat.
"God! You spineless bastard!" Sarah yells.
"No, Sarah, that would be you girls." Roman says, "You did it all. You did it. You killed them all. Even your closest friends. Living in total isolation, the pressure of another movie about you two, the discovery that Milton destroyed Sid's Mommy dearest, you girls finally just snapped! And who's our hero, huh? The sole survivor. Who's the one that bravely faced down the psychopaths and killed them with their own knife? You're gonna pay for the life you stole from me, Sid. for the mother, and for the family, and for the stardom and goddamn it! Everything you have that should've been mine!"
"God, why don't you stop your whining and get on with it?" Sidney asks, frustrated, "We've heard this shit before!"
"Stop!" Roman says.
"You know why you kill people, Roman? Do you?" Sidney asks.
"I don't wanna hear it!" Roman responds.
"Because you choose to! There is no one else to blame!"
"Stop! Fucking damn it!"
"Why don't you take some fucking responsibility?"
"Fuck you!"
"Fuck you!"
That's when the fight broke out. Roman charged at the girls, but Sidney whacked him with an object before running off. He chased her, but Sarah attacked him as well. Roman then turned his attention to Sarah, slamming her face into the bar right before she smashed a bottle against his head. They threw some punches at each other before Sidney knocked him down. Sarah reached for a bar stool and raised it over her head, but Roman kicked her legs out from under her and she fell. He then got up and kicked her a couple of times before picking her up and punching her in the face, knocking her down again. During all this, Dewey and Gale were banging on the doors, yelling and trying to get in. Sidney attacked Roman again, but he just shoved her aside as he lifted Sarah by her shirt and started to strangle her.
Suddenly, the lights went out, followed by a banging on the door. Kincaid was calling for the girls on the other side of it. The distraction served long enough for Roman to release his grip on Sarah and hiding as Kincaid picked the lock and opened the door, carefully entering the room.
"Sid? Sarah?" Kincaid whispered, "Where is he?"
Roman suddenly appeared and smashed something against Kincaid's head, knocking him out.
"Hey." Sidney says after she and Sarah get up, "Lose something?" She asks, holding up the knife.
"Found something." Roman says, taking Kincaid's gun and shooting Sidney with it, knocking her down. He walked over to her and shot her again before retrieving his knife and stabbing Sarah twice with it before he slit her throat.
