Chapter 15: A Visit From The Past
The next day, Sidney and Sarah drove out to L.A. Sidney wore some black pants and boots, a green hooded shirt, brown jacket, and her necklace. Sarah simply threw on some dark blue jeans, her boots, and a black scoop neck tee with her locket. Once in town, they went to the police station, where they saw Dewey.
"Sid! Sarah!" Dewey says, approaching the girls, hugging them.
"Hey, Dewey." Sarah says.
"What are you girls doing down here?" Dewey asks.
"Actually, what were we doing up there?" Sidney asks in response, "You okay?"
"Yeah, I'm all right." Dewey responds.
"Is she all right?" Sarah asks, referring to Gale.
"Hey, you know Gale. It'd take a direct hit." Dewey says.
"So the news said this was the precinct." Sidney says, "Who's this guy Kincaid?"
Dewey led the girls to a more private location of the room. "I told you two to stay hidden." He says, "It's not safe for you to be here."
"The killer called us." Sarah says.
"What?" Dewey asks.
"Yeah, he found us." Sidney says, "We're no more safe here than we are there, and at least here we're not alone."
Dewey then led them to Kincaid's office, where the detective and Gale were waiting.
"Detective Kincaid?" Dewey asks.
"Yeah." Kincaid responds.
"There's someone here who wants to help." Dewey says, entering the office and revealing Sidney and Sarah.
"Oh, my God. Sidney. Sarah." Gale says, "Is the man fast or what?"
The girls share awkward hugs.
"Sid, Sarah, this is Detective Kincaid." Dewey says, introducing the girls.
"Nice to finally meet you, Sidney. Sarah." Kincaid says as the girls shake hands with him.
"The killer called them." Dewey explains.
"What? When?" Kincaid asks.
"What did he say?" Gale asks.
"Oh, you know, the usual small talk." Sidney answers, "'What's new, how you been, how do you wanna die?'"
"Do you have any idea how he could've gotten your number?" Dewey asks.
"He could've monitored calls from a scanner." Kincaid says, "Did you call them from the set?" He asks Dewey.
"No." Dewey replies.
"Do you have their numbers stored in your memory?" Gale asks, "Your phone memory?"
"Yeah, I guess I do." Dewey says.
"Has anyone else ever used your phone?" Gale asks.
"Just Jennifer." Dewey says, "And you." He adds, turning to Kincaid.
Sidney and Sarah's attention was drawn away from the conversation when they noticed something on Kincaid's board. There were old photos of Sidney's mother, and one of Billy pinned on the board. Next to them, were copies of the back of the two recent photos, one saying 'I KILLED HER' and the other saying 'AND HELPED HIM.'
"The killer leaves a photograph after each murder, Sidney." Kincaid explains after seeing them looking at the board. "The most recent one left the extra photo, I'm assuming for you, Sarah."
"They were taken in Hollywood at the same studio they're shooting 'Stab 3." Gale adds, "Well, except the one. We assume you know where and when that one was, Sarah.
"Of course I do." Sarah responds, "It's his senior yearbook photo. How the hell did the killer get their hands on it?"
"We don't know." Kincaid says.
"Why didn't you tell me?" Sidney asks, "This is my mother, Dewey. Why didn't you say something?"
"Why wasn't I told, either?" Sarah asks.
"I was afraid they were bait." Dewey says, "Something to, you know, trick you girls out of hiding."
"Sidney, was your mother an actress or a model, because they look a lot like publicity stills." Gale asks.
"I don't know." Sidney replies, "Detective, I wanna see this place in the pictures." She adds.
"So do I." Sarah adds.
"Are you sure?" Kincaid asks.
"Absolutely." Sidney replies.
Kincaid then drove them to the studio, stopping to let them out before driving off to do something else.
"That stairwell, over there, that's where one of the pictures was taken." Dewey explains, pointing out the spot.
"I can't believe she never mentioned any of this." Sidney says.
Suddenly, they heard a voice calling for them. The group turned to see Rose, running in their direction.
"Oh my God! Sidney! Sarah!" Rose says, hugging each girl, "I didn't know you girls were here."
"We just got here." Sarah answers, bringing her up to speed on what happened.
"That can't be good." Rose says, "On the plus side, I'm glad you guys are okay."
"Same with you, Rose." Sidney answers.
"Tell you what: When you guys are done looking at what you need to, come find me, and we can catch up." Rose suggests.
"Or you could walk with us and we can catch up while we do that." Sarah offers.
"Alright! Where to first?" Rose asks when a door behind them suddenly opens, startling them.
"Sorry." The female says.
"Martha." Sarah says, recognizing her.
"Oh, my God, Sarah. Sid." Martha says as two cops run over to them. "Don't shoot, I'm only 17." She adds.
"It's okay." Dewey assures them, "We know her."
"Tell me that's his ex-girlfriend, I'll shoot myself." Gale says quietly to Sidney and Sarah.
"It's Martha Meeks, Randy's sister." Sidney explains.
"Randy's sister?" Gale asks.
"Yeah, can't you tell?" Dewey asks.
"We miss you in Woodsboro, guys." Martha says.
"Martha, what are you doing here?" Sarah asks.
"There's something you guys should see." Martha says, holding a VHS tape.
The group followed her inside, and she put the tape in the player.
"Told you I'd make a movie someday. Huh?" Randy says as he appears on the video.
"Oh my God." Sidney and Sarah quietly say in unison as Sarah reaches for her locket.
"Well, if you're watching this tape, then it means, as I feared, I did not survive these killings here at Windsor College, and that giving up my virginity to Sarah Loomis was probably not a good idea." Randy says in the video.
"Sarah?" Dewey asks, as she shifts uncomfortably in her seat.
"Yes, Sarah." Randy says in the video.
"So, you guys..." Dewey asks, looking in Sarah's direction.
"Shut up!" Sarah says at the same time Randy does in the video.
"Don't get me wrong, I really like Sarah. We were at her place, her roommate was out, we watched a few movies, and you know... shit happens." Randy explains. There was a short pause before he continued. "Anyway, the reason I'm here is to help you so that my death will not be in vain. That my life's work will help save some other poor soul from getting mutilated. If this killer does come back, and he's for real, there are a few things you gotta remember. Is this simply another sequel? Well, if it is, same rules apply. But, here's the critical thing. If you find yourself dealing with an unexpected backstory, and a preponderance of exposition, then the sequel rules do not apply. Because you're not dealing with a sequel. You are dealing with the concluding chapter of a trilogy. That's right, it's a rarity in the horror field, but it does exist, and it is a force to be reckoned with. Because true trilogies are all about going back to the beginning and discovering something that wasn't true from the get-go. Godfather, Jedi, all revealed something that we thought was true that wasn't true. So if it is a trilogy you are dealing with, here are some super trilogy rules. One: you've got a killer who's gonna be superhuman. Stabbing him won't work. Shooting him won't work. Basically, in the third one, you gotta cryogenically freeze his head, decapitate him, or blow him up. Number two: anyone, including the main character, can die. This means you, girls. I'm sorry. It's the final chapter. It could be fucking Reservoir Dogs by the time this thing is through. Number three: the past will come back to bite you in the ass. Whatever you think you know about the past, forget it. The past is not at rest. Any sins you think were committed in the past are about to break out and destroy you. So in closing, let me say good luck, Godspeed, and for some of you, I'll see you soon. Because the rules say that some of you ain't gonna make it. I didn't. Not if you're watching this tape."
The video ended, and Martha turned off the VHS player and TV while the others stood.
"You alright, Sarah?" Rose asks quietly, as she noticed her friend's reactions.
"Yeah, I'm... I'm good." Sarah responds, "Just processing everything. I'll be fine. Oh, and if you or anyone else says anything about you-know-what, your ass is grass."
"Lips are sealed." Rose says.
"Thank you." Sidney says to Martha once they leave the room. "You be careful. Say hi to your folks for me."
"And me." Sarah adds.
"You girls be careful too." Martha responds before turning to Dewey. "Bye, Dewey. Come visit us soon."
"I will, Martha. Thank you." Dewey says before Martha walks off.
"I've got an idea. I'll hook up with you guys later." Gale says before walking off.
"Want us to come with you?" Dewey asks.
"I work better alone." Gale responds, "Why don't you try and figure out where those other pictures were taken."
"I can see nothing's changed." Sidney says.
"No." Dewey responds.
