Chapter 8: Hospital Bills

Astrid's POV

I woke up to a bright light and beeping sounds and sounds of voices all around me. I tried to move and get up and let out a short scream of pain. There was nurses on me right away laying me back down.

"You need to stay laying down." One of them told me. I looked at her confused.

"Why?" I asked.

"You have a bullet in your upper chest." She told me. I than remembered what happened before I was brought into the ambulance. My mother shot me and was taken by police in handcuffs.

"Where's Hiccup?" I asked.

"Who's Hiccup?" She asked.

"I want him with me." I said. The nurse nodded and left the area and shut the curtain of the bed I was in, in the E.R.

Author's POV

Hiccup was pacing back and forth in the waiting room waiting to hear something from someone. He heard a male voice call his name and looked up to see his father.

"Dad!" Hiccup said.

"What is going on? Why are you here?" Stoick asked him.

"Astrid's here. She was shot. Her mom shot her." Hiccup explained.

"Who's Astrid?" Stoick asked.

"The girl I took out on a date tonight." Hiccup said.

"Ahhh, I see." Stoick said.

"Hiccup Haddock?" Someone said Hiccup turned around to see a nurse. He walked over to her right away.

"Is she okay?"

"She's stable. We need to get an x-ray of her chest to see where the bullet is. But she wants to see you." The nurse told him. "Come with me."

Hiccup and Stoick followed her to the section Astrid was in.

Astrid's POV

I laid silently on the bed trying not to move when I saw the curtain pull back and Hiccup walk in.

"Hiccup." I said. He came over and hugged me gently. There was an older man behind him. he had more red hair than auburn, but the same green eyes as Hiccups. If I had a guess I would say it's his father.

"Astrid. Are you okay?" Hiccup asked. I nodded trying to reassure him.

"I'm fine. Just in pain. They haven't really told me anything about what's going on though." I said. I looked towards Hiccup's father. "Who's this?" I asked. Hiccup looked at him.

"Astrid, this is my dad. Stoick Haddock. He's are mayor." Hiccup said. I smiled at him.

"It's very nice to meet you." I told him. Stoick smiled at her.

"You as well lass. Hiccup I'll be in the waiting room." Stoick said and Hiccup nodded as he father left us alone. Well alone as you could be in a hospital emergency room, in a small section covered only by curtains. A nurse came in and told me that they wanted to take an x-ray of my chest to see where the bullet was.

~~~~~~
After the x-ray they brought me back to the E.R. and Hiccup was waiting with me. A doctor came in.
"Alright, Astrid. We need to do a surgery to get the bullet out. Okay?"
I nodded. "Okay." The doctor gave me a small smile and asked to talk to Hiccup. Hiccup kissed my head and left with him. I assumed they were whispering because I wasn't able to hear them.
Author's POV
"Mr.Haddock, I know Astrid from previous hospital visits, and from her mother coming intoxicated. I also know that Astrid is in no state to pay for this surgery. Or even these bills she's going to get from the E.R and for her x-ray. The problem is, we have to do this surgery. But I want to know. If you're okay with it." The doctor said. Hiccup thought for a moment and nodded.
"Do the surgery. I'll  take care of payments for her." Hiccup said. The Doctor nodded and went to have the nurses prep Astrid for surgery. Hiccup went back to her and she smiled when he came in. "I'll see you after you wake up from surgery, okay?" Hiccup said kissing her forehead. Astrid nodded.
"Okay. Will you be in my room?" She asked.
"You want me too?" He asked. She nodded. "Okay. I'll try to be." He told her. Astrid smiled and Hiccup left to go to the waiting room. The nurses came and rolled Astrid to the O.R.
Hiccup found his dad and told him what was going on. Stoick felt bad for the girl.
"Dad. Can she stay with us for a while?" Hiccup asked. "I don't want her alone in her apartment. She lives in some of the worst apartments and area in town. I don't want her there anymore." Hiccup said to his father. Stoick looked at him.
"I'll think about it." He told Hiccup. Hiccup nodded and Stoick left the hospital.
Astrid's POV
I felt myself waking up and I felt a hand underneath my right one. I wrapped my fingers around it.
"Mmm.." I made a small sound and slowly started to open my eyes. "Hiccup..." I managed to say. I heard the familiar male's voice.
"Astrid. Hey. How are you feeling?" He asked looked at me. I looked at him and smiled a little.
"Groggy." I said. He smiled.
"Yeah. That's the drugs wearing off." He told me. He stroked his thumb along the back of my hand. I smiled softly at him. "Just relax. Okay?" He said. I nodded.
"Okay. Can you sit with me?" I asked him. He smiled and I moved over to make room for him on my bed. I laid my head on his shoulder and held his hand. "Hiccup..."
"Yes?" He said softly.
"Can you move in with me?" I asked. "I don't want to live alone."
"I was gonna ask you the same thing." He said. I looked at him surprised. "Do you wanna move in with me, at my house? Just until we can find an apartment of our own." He said. I smiled at him.
"Really?" I said. Hiccup nodded.
"I'd love too, Hiccup." I said smiling. He kissed my forehead and I smiled.
A few minutes later a nurse came in to check on me and saw I was awake. She checked my bandages and changed them. I saw where they had done the surgery. They had to cut where the bullet went in more so they could get into my skin and get it better. So I had a fairly long cut there now. There was seven stitches as well. The nurse put a new bandage on it. She also unhooked me from all of the machines except my IV.
"We want to keep you for another day or two. Okay? Just to keep an eye on you." She told me. I nodded as she left the room.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Those couple days went by and I was getting ready to be discharged. The doctor gave me a bag of bandages and cream to use on my wound.

"You can come back to get your stitches out in a week. Okay?" He told me. I nodded. Hiccup had brought me some of my own clothes to change into. I got changed and signed myself out on the sheets the doctor told me to sign. I grabbed my stuff and left with Hiccup. Hiccup was holding my hand down the hallway and I was just looking around minding my own business. We got to Hiccup's car and headed to his house.

"Shouldn't we go to my place first?" I asked. "So I can get my clothes and stuff?"

"Nope. I already did. You know how I was gone for a few hours yesterday?" He said and I nodded. "I went to your apartment and my dad and I, and some movers we called cleared out your apartment. All your stuff is at my house in our guest room. All the furniture from your living room is in our garage. We also signed and paid off the lease getting you and your mom out of the contract so they can't peg you for money or anything." He told me. I was surprised.

"You didn't need to do that Hiccup." I told him. He smiled.

"I know but we wanted too." He said. "Are you hungry m'lady?" He asked. I smiled.

"I could eat."

"How about A&W? They have really good burgers." He told me. I smiled at the thought of a burger.

"Sure!"

Hiccup and I went and went inside and ordered some food. We sat down at a table and started to eat and just talk a little bit. I felt Hiccup staring at me and I looked at him.

"Yes?" I asked.

"Nothing. You're just so beautiful." He said. I felt my cheeks go red.

"Thanks Hiccup." I said.

When we were done we left and headed back to Hiccup's house. He showed me upstairs to the guest room that was now my bedroom. They had set up all of my stuff. Hung up my clothes and put them in a dresser. Made the bed. This room was five times the size of any bedroom I've ever had. It was massive. A nice big queen sized bed in the middle against the back wall with fresh white and light blue sheets and quilt and pillows. Hiccup knew that was my favorite color. The closest was a walk-in and I didn't have that many clothes and they didn't even fill 1/4 of the closest. There was a make-up desk with a big mirror and chair. There was a small lounging area with a flat-screen television on the wall. There was a night table on each side of the bed. A cushioned bench sat at the end of the bed. There was quite a few windows and were covered by dark blue curtains. I walked over and open two of them to reveal two french doors. I opened them and there was a small balcony that looked over Hiccup's backyard which was also very big. I walked back in and Hiccup was standing in the door way watching me. I walked over to him.

"You didn't have to do all of this." I told him.

"I know. But you deserve it." He said.

I looked at him and sighed softly. I had my hair back in a messy bun and my bangs pinned back. I was wearing my black rimmed glasses. I was staring at Hiccup and thoughts were running through my head.

"Thank you Hiccup." I said walking towards him hugging him. I kissed his cheek and felt his arms wrap around my waist. He kissed my head.

"You're welcome." He said softly.

Later that night, we had finished up dinner and cleaned up. Stoick still wasn't home, and Hiccup didn't seem worried. I was walking around the house and stopped by the living room. I was looking at a picture on the wall of when Hiccup was a baby. It was the only full family picture in their house. Both of his parents and him. I smiled a little at a Hiccup as a baby. I jumped a little when I felt arms around my waist.

"Sorry." Hiccup whispered. "I didn't mean to scare you."

"It's okay." I told him. "You were a cute baby, you know that?" I said. I noticed he turned slightly red.

"Thanks." He said. "What do you want to do m'lady?" He asked.

"Watch a movie?"

"Down here or upstairs?" He asked. I thought about it for a moment.

"Your room?" I suggested. He smiled.

"Sure." We headed upstairs to his room. I had been in it before when I would hang out here. It was painted brown. He had some red accents here and there, his bed was a queen size as well. He had green sheets, quilt and pillows. He also had a night table on each side of his bed. He had a few windows in his room and also had a balcony. He too had a walk in closet. He had a flat screen television on the wall across from his bed. He had a desk in his room covered in notebooks and sketches. He had lots of sketches and pictures on his walls as well.

I sat down on his bed as he grabbed the remote and turned on the TV. He went to Netflix and we picked a movie to watch. We were sitting right next to each other and after a little while he put his arm around me. I blushed lightly. He stroked his fingers up and down my arm giving me goosebumps. I shivered a little and he looked at me.

"You okay?" He asked.

"Yeah. I'm fine." I said giving him a small smile. He looked back at the TV and I was still looking at him. I had thoughts running through my head that Hiccup would end up like every other guy I've dated or have had in my life. The more I thought about it, the more I realized that Hiccup wasn't like the other guys. He had paid off my mothers and my bills and debt. He took me to an expensive restaurant for a date and was at the hospital with me. He stood up for me with Liam. He's letting me stay with them and treating me like I'm someone extremely special.

"Hiccup." I piped up. I saw him turn his head to me.

"Yes?" He said.

"You would never hurt me, would you? Like how Liam, and other guys have." I asked. I think he could see fear in my eyes of it happening again. He shook his head no at me.

"I will never hurt you Astrid. I'm not like that. What they did to you is wrong. Liam got put in jail for what he did to you. Both of your parents have been arrested for what they've done. Although I don't know what your previous boyfriends were like, I would assume they abused you as well, didn't they?"

I nodded. "Yeah, they did. Every guy in my life or I've dated has abused me in someway." I told him. "It's normal for me. That I have this idea in my head that you're going to end up like that too." I told him.

"I promise you, I will never hurt you." He said looking at me in my eyes.

Every time we would look at each other, or hold hands or anything I felt this warm feeling all through my body that I couldn't explain. A feeling I never felt except with Hiccup. I didn't know what it was or what it meant. But I liked it.

"I believe you." I said. I leaned up and kissed his cheek and smiled at him. He smiled back and kissed my lips, I kissed him back. I smiled and moved myself to lay against him with my head against his chest. He had an arm around me and we stayed like that while watching the movie.
