Ch. 8 New Perspectives Part 1

Shoto’s POV
I woke up earlier than normal and stretched, popping my neck. “I might have time for extra training… Or maybe a bath instead of a shower..” I yawned, sitting on my bed, trying to figure what to do. “Aha!” I dropped my fist onto my hand, and stood up, making my way to my connected bathroom.
I hummed, starting the shower water and stripped off the clothes I forgot last night. While awaiting the water to warm up I absentmindedly traced my right arm. “Stupid…” I muttered under my breath, stepping under the lukewarm water. Lathering the shampoo in my hands before washing my hair with the foamy substance, I thought about what I could do for Momo for day one with a clear, level head. Maybe some flowers? Rinsing it out I sighed and carried on, no matter how clear headed I was, or what problems I sorted out, I just couldn’t find it in me to actually smile. You will when you see her. I nodded, washing off my body, looking over the scars from years of brutal training. How was this the only one that hurt so much? I scoffed, putting my hand over my eye, before shutting off the water and stepped out to dry off. Putting on my school outfit for the day I brushed my hand through my hair and walked out of my room.
“Oh Shoto! I was going to come make sure you were up. Did you have any problems sleeping?” I gave Fuyumi an awkward smile as I shook my head.
“No, I slept pretty well last night. So I’m going to walk to school today.” She nodded some.
“Do I need to get breakfast made?” I gulped, not wanting to just ditch her.
“Uh sure sis.” She smiled happily and hugged me. As she ran off I sighed and stepped back into my room for a small notepad to put in my pocket, along with a pen. Making my way back out of the room, I headed downstairs where Fuyumi was helping the maids cook. I sat down and watched them, zoning out as the night played out in my mind.
“Shoto? Shoto!” I blinked, staring at Fuyumi standing by me, her head craned in front of me. “You haven’t been yourself. Tell me what’s wrong.” I opened my mouth and looked around, closing it promptly. “Father’s not here… So you can’t make him mad.” She whispered, sitting by me. I rubbed my arm nervously as the maid set our food down.
“I… met my soulmate.” I finally caved, telling her. Her excited gleam scared me so I frantically tried to persuade her to stop. “I met her like 3 weeks ago! But, we didn’t really talk.. Our meeting was kind of alarming. Last night though we confirmed the whole thing and she’s agreed to stop avoiding me.”
“That’s great! Why not have her over?” I shook my head.
“She hates father, and I’m still with Momo, that’d be wrong in a way…” I watched Fuyumi shove a bite in her mouth as she debated my statement, reminding me of my personal morning goals. I ate while letting her think it over.
“Not really. You guys aren’t doing anything. And I don’t see how she could hate dad… She doesn’t know him.” She tilted her head, causing me to let out a deep sigh.
“She’s my soulmate? Feel each other's pain?” I pointed to my eye and motioned to my body with its light scars, she moved away uncomfortably.
“Okay, you got that, now what about Momo?” I puffed out my cheeks, putting a bite in my mouth, avoiding the topic. Her expectant look stopped me from putting another bite in my mouth and I dropped my chopsticks back down.
“Okay, look. I don’t have a good reason. I just feel like I’d be cheating going off and bringing her home.” She rolled her eyes and huffed.
“Alright. I’ll stop. Can I know her name? Is she pretty?” I narrowed my eyes, already taking another bite. Is she pretty? What the hell?
“I’m not answering those.” I stated before eating my last bite.
“Please! You know I don’t have a soulmate!” I scratched the back of my neck and checked the time.
“Ugh… Don’t tell father.” I huffed and watched her nod. “Her names (Y/n) (L/n), and I can’t tell you if she is or not.” I stood and bowed a bit, before heading out to avoid more questioning.
I quickly made my way to the nearest open flower shop and bought Momo some flowers I know she favors, then hummed walking towards the bus. Upon seeing the older lady I swiftly turned course in her direction. “Good morning, ma’am.” The look of surprise when she saw me made me nervous.
“She’s not here today, probably won’t be for the rest of the week.” I nodded and sat down timidly.
“Actually… I’m here because she’s not… I’d like to know more about her, if you don’t mind.”
“Why don’t you ask her yourself?” I sat the flowers down on my lap and played with my hands.
“Because of my behavior when we met, she’s not really that talkative to me.. And I’d like to make it up to her.” The woman by me laughed a bit and smiled.
“Let's start with the basics. My name's Gammy, at least thats (Y/n)'s name for me. Now what’s yours?” I blinked in surprise and blushed.
“My name is Todoroki Shoto… Nice to meet you.” She nodded.
“Now, sonny. You said my sweet girl isn’t talkative? Maybe not to you directly, but I’ve heard plenty about you. Oh, she’s just magnetic, ain’t she! She hates getting help, but will always offer help to others. Looking back at it, I think that trait comes from you.. Her favorite color is (F/c). and between us, the best way to get close is with true feelings. Lying and hiding are two things she knows when someone does. And food too, I guess. Also, she heard you call her cat girl, it was kinda insulting. She’s not a neko after all.” Running her words through my mind I stopped.
“Because of me? And what is she then?” Gammy, laughed.
“A shapeshifter, of course. And I mean, I think she’s so keen on helping because of what she knows you endured. Just be kind to her.” She stood and made her way to the bus and I quickly stood up, clutching the flowers in my hand and taking her arm with my other to help her onto the bus.
“Thank you ma’am..” I whispered, sitting down in a seat away from her.
Once the bus came to a stop, I hurried off and towards the school. Being too excited to give Momo the flowers, I hadn’t really put much more thought towards (Y/n). “Good morning Momo.” I greeted, holding the flowers behind my back, blushing.
“Morning Shoto! You seem refreshed…” She whispered in greeting, looking to the side. I frowned at her sad tone and bit my lip, retrieving the flowers, holding them out to her.
“F-for you of course!” I blushed deeply as she took them and smiled.
“Oh Shoto! They’re so beautiful! You remembered my favorites!” I nodded bashfully as she smelled the plants and I made my way to my seat. I’m going to start respecting her space more, she really deserves it. I took a deep breath and smiled at her softly, before shifting my gaze to my desk.
Upon Aizawa walking in the rest of the class silenced themselves and he told us that today would be majorly a training day, meaning some of our classes have been cut off for us students in the hero course. I nodded along, though, not focusing on a thing the tired pro said. I stood with the rest of the class and we all walked down to the changing rooms. At least I didn’t choose extra training this morning.. I looked over at Iida as he fixed his metal plated outfit, while fixing my belt.
“Good morning Todoroki. How are things with (Y/n)?” I blinked at his instant question and peered at him.
“I haven’t talked to her? She’s gone…?” Removing his helmet he sighed.
“Hatsume said she was going to stop avoiding you…” Seeing the look in his eye I bit the inside of my cheek.
“Are you okay? And she isn’t. I have her number, she’s on a trip or something.” His blue orbs darted to my hetero ones.
“I apologize! And yes I’m great! My soulmate and I are now talking.” His face flushed and I chuckled as he quickly put his helmet back on in embarrassment. “Well let’s get to training!” With that we made our way out of the changing room to the rest of the class. The reminder of (Y/n) made me look down at the new boots, I wasn’t prepared to lie, they were actually comfortable. I smiled a bit at them, her reaction and little show playing in my head.
“Shoto?” Momo was leaning in towards my face causing me to back up, barely keeping myself upright. “We’re partnered up against Kirishima and Tokoyami.” I looked around at the team that was up already. Sato and Iida were up against Midoriya and Sero. Zoning back out while Momo started talking about the best way to go against them, I popped my fingers. “Are you even listening to me?” I blinked at Momo’s hand in my face and looked down.
“Sorry… What were you saying?”
“Ugh, I’d expect you to listen better since I’m your girlfriend..” She muttered under her breath, and I sighed some. “Okay. the best way to take down Tokoyami would be with light, so while I make a big light, you should use your fire to keep Dark Shadow at bay. Then with Kirishima you’d want to use your ice to slow him down.” I nodded at her conclusion.
“Makes sense..” I whispered, smiling softly.
“We’re up next, will you even be focused enough to fight?” Nodding, I hummed.
“Yes, ma’am.” Momo sighed and nodded. I sat on the benches nearby and watched my classmates battle it out.
“Hello Todoroki!” My gaze moved towards the brunette that sat near me, and I motioned my head in recognition.
“Hi Uraraka.” Said female hummed and smiled.
“Please don’t be upset that I gave her your number! She really protected you when…” She paled some and let out an uneasy laugh and I turned my head in the direction she was looking in, to see Momo making her way over.
“Huh? What’s so funny?” She asked sitting by me, I scooted away a little to ease her space issues.
“I was telling him how cute Izuku looks while going up against Sato! Just look at him!” She replied quickly, her eyes moving to the greenette.
“Ohh!” Momo giggled. “You really have a thing for him, huh?” She asked, intertwining her hand with mine. I blushed and looked down at our hands.
“You don’t have to hold my hand. I understand you have problems with space.. I don’t like making you uncomfortable..” I whispered, breaking the girls awkward silence, while letting go of her hand. I could feel Ochako’s worried gaze and Momo’s exasperated one burning into either side of my head as I looked down.
“Alright! Next teams!” I stood at Aizawa’s words, making my way to the battle grounds.
It wasn’t working, Kirishima chipped at my ice quickly and Dark Shadow broke through it in huge bursts. The rings of fire I used to shield them from us blew out after moments from the not-so-helpful winds. I tried to keep patient as I knew the light Momo would be making would be large. I swear, it shouldn’t take longer than 5 minutes! What are you doing? Standing pretty!? I growled internally as Kiri made a jump for me and I dodged, attempting to freeze the ground again. Once again, Kirishima jumped in perfect timing, keeping me from freezing him, and even though Tokoyami’s feet were trapped to the ground this time, Dark Shadow roamed free.
I grit my teeth, dodging around Dark Shadow. In the process to keep Dark Shadow from Momo, Kiri caught me from behind, getting my back. I hissed a bit, and turned towards him, my luck changing when my right hand grazed him enough to start freezing his arm. I quickly set him in an ice trap and turned to focus on Dark Shadow only to see Momo finally done and flashing the bright light at him. As she used the light to force Dark Shadow back, Kirishima broke through and charged at me again. I growled as he brought his arm out, instantly creating a barrier to block his attack. While Kirishima busied himself with chopping through the ice I sent a blast of fire through it, and sent him flying.
“Alright! Times up, next team.” I quickly unfreezed Tokoyami from the ground.
“Sorry bout that.” I whispered to the two as we walked back to our seats.
“No, it’s all cool! You did so well protecting your team mate!” I looked down, scoffing.
“As a one man team you’re pretty good.” Tokoyami stated, nodding. I wiped my bloody lip, chuckling at the sight on my hand.
“You guys were great, I’m surprised I stayed upright.” I complimented only to be stopped by All Might as he came over.
“Young Todoroki! You have looked better in training, I suggest you go see Recovery Girl to at least be patched up. Tell her that she doesn't need to use her quirk unless she sees fit.” I sighed and nodded walking out.
“You look surprisingly worse than I expected from you.” Recovery Girl comments and I groan at her obvious statement, sitting with my back to her. “Well… I’m gonna use my quirk anyway. It’s not so bad so you shouldn’t feel too sluggish.” I turned my head to her.
“Why then?” She redirected her gaze to my arm and before I could move to it she smiled.
“I just think it’d be good to get you out of here without the pain.” I furrowed my brows as she motioned me down and kissed my temple before grabbing chocolate for me. Sighing, I took the chocolate.
“Thanks..” I whispered feeling the strange effect of her quirk healing my body. I waited for the feeling to leave.
“Don’t hurt yourself too bad Shoto, have a good day.” I nodded, closing her door and making my way back to the training area.
“Good job out there!” Momo cheered, patting the seat by her. I scoffed, scowling as I stood, staring at the seat.
“I guarantee a shapeshifter would have been more helpful to me out there.” I tried to keep my voice stable and low, but my ferocity was present. Look at her, not a scratch, and she took forever to make one thing. I couldn’t deny that since starting school I had been put into my place and realized I can’t do it all on my own. But no one I went up against knew how to dodge my ice attacks or necessarily had the ability to fight against them. Kirishima did, and I was hoping that I was going to have just a little help.
“A what?” Momo asked, stunned and I rolled my eyes, heading over to Iida who moved over generously seeing as he was part of the first group.
“Are you still with her?” He asked and I glared at the floor.
“I’m just upset at not really winning. We’re still going to work out just fine.” Iida moved his hands up quickly.
“I’m not saying you won’t… I mean I don’t think it’s true, but I can’t stop you, it’s just…” Iida had leaned back behind me and I stared at his figure till he sat back up and handed me a dead flower.
“What…?”
“Your soulmate seemed to be injured… It fell off your arm shortly after sitting.” I examined the flower and turned my arm towards me seeing the spot it’s dead roots had once been. I rubbed my chin, looking at him.
“I forgot she’s attached to me…” I muttered, crumbling up the flower before folding my arms over my chest. He sat silently as I watched the other battles.
“Okay, so we had these pairs set up to see how far along you’ve come and what you need to work on.” Aizawa’s voice drawed out and I sighed. “All Might and I will be going and telling you all what to be doing.” As they started walking around telling us what to do I found myself unlocking my phone. I bit my lip in thought before clicking the ‘send request’ button on the facebook page of the girl I call my soulmate. “Todoroki!” I jumped and looked at Aizawa as he walked over. “You need to work on precision and sending out targeted attacks and not just walls and huge blasts.” I nodded as he pointed me to the targeted area.
Once there I lined my right hand up with the slowly moving target. Wait, how do you want to do this? A blast from the palm? Or try flicking smaller pieces with your fingers? How should I do it, and how can I? I huffed, deciding that I might try everything to see what I can do then work from there.
“Young Todoroki!” I groaned softly, turning my head towards the sunken version of the previous number one hero. “I get why Aizawa sent you this direction but I think your problem isn’t precision but distraction!” I rolled my eyes.
“I’m not distracted.” I retorted, firing out a long shot of ice towards the target, missing and the after shock of it caused the floor under it’s path to frost.
“You really are though! What’s wrong?” He patted my back and I sighed, looking at the area.
“I was paired really shittily. I was shoved with a workload against people that actually could get out of my attacks.” He sighed and rested his hand to the side.
“Look kiddo, it’s not easy and you’ll be put into problems where people can overpower you, getting training against them is good for you.”
“Yeah! But I had a partner who didn’t do anything!” I yelled in aggravation as I slammed my foot down, shooting a line of flames towards the group near me by accident. Once realizing what I had done I quickly used my right side to put out the flames, sighing.
“And by me getting injured someone else was injured. If I had a better partner it’d been better. If this was a real scenario and the people were out for blood I could have died since I didn’t have anyone helping me like they should have.” All Might’s stare was still on the kids that were in shock as he took a step from me. “Leave me alone.” He nodded and went to check on other students progress. “What are you looking at?” I seethed causing the group to scatter back to their training.
