Chapter 6: The Orchard
Bianca Schuyler and Samuel Seabury are at an orchard despite the wishes of Bianca's father.
"I'm going to write a letter to your father." Samuel decided.
"Why?" I glanced at him.
"He won't let me even be friends with you if I'm a loyalist so I'm going to show him that I'm not." He explained.
"Samuel." I turned serious. "Stay safe."
"I promise, I will." He told me. "What's your biggest fear?"
"Probably spiders." I said after a moments hesitation.
"Spiders?" He chuckled, then reached behind the bench. His hand came back with a wad of spider webs. I leapt off the bench.
"Nonononono." I examined the webs from a distance, seeing dead bugs embedded in it. "How can you hold spider webs?"
"There aren't any spiders in it!" He claimed, wiping the webs off his hand. I was still hesitant to sit down beside him again. "There's nothing on my hand."
"Okay." I said slowly, then sat lightly on the bench again, conscious on the spider webs on the back of the bench. "What's yours?"
"What?" His eyes snapped back towards me.
"What's your biggest fear?" I asked promptly.
"I think death." He said slowly.
"You're going to fight in a war." I reminded him, a sad edge to my voice.
"That's how I'm facing it!" He puffed out his chest. Even through the coat he was little.
"But you're not gonna die." I told him firmly.
"I'm not gonna die." Samuel agreed. (I would give him a nickname or something, but I absolutely HATE Sam or Sammy. No offense if that's your name)
"Where's your family from?" I asked.
"We're all from England. I grew up in London." He told me. "And yours?"
(I know for a FACT that's not true but idc)
"We've lived here my entire life." I informed him.
"Have you gone on a trip or anything, at least?" He swiped his hand through his hair.
"No." I shook my head. "My father was at war when we were growing up."
"And your mother?" Samuel asked.
"She doesn't like traveling." I shrugged.
"My parents loved it." Samuel smiled, studying the trees.
"They don't anymore?" I asked.
"My mum's dead." He told me grimly.
"I'm sorry." I patted his shoulder. He stiffened at the contact.
"I've made my peace." His smile returned. "I live on my own, but my sister and brothers live with my father in London."
"How come you don't live in London with them?" I asked.
"You don't want me here?" He laughed.
"No, no!" I exclaimed. "I'd prefer you here!"
"I know." He said smugly, flicking my chin gently. I grinned. "They wanted me to come here and preach for the king."
"That didn't go too well." I commented.
"No, it didn't." He replied. "To be honest, Caleb would've done better."
"Who's Caleb?" I asked.
"My brother." He explained. "He's two years older than me, and I've got two little sisters: Abigail, and Richelle."
(A/n: Samuel hasn't got a sister named Richelle. I turn Richard into a girl, idk why. I don't know how far apart any of the siblings are, so don't take much of what I'm saying literally.)
"I have three sisters, but you already knew that." I told him.
"I haven't spoken much with Eliza or Peggy." He admitted.
"You've spoken with Eliza a little bit." I reminded him.
"Just a little bit." He nodded. A cloud passed over the sun, leaving shadows consuming the orchard. "By the way, what did Peggy tell you before they left?"
"It's a long story." I told him, fiddling with the end of my ponytail. It slipped out of my hand and dropped behind my back.
"We're going to be here awhile." He shrugged. The sky was getting dark from the clouds.
"Okay." I sighed. "On the night of the ball, Peggy came into my room to help me get ready, since she wasn't allowed to go. To get back at my father, she vowed get you and I married. And just then, she said 'I told you I'd make you marry Samuel Seabury'."
"She did?" He chuckled. I nodded, feeling a far raindrop landing on my arm. One landed on him. He jumped.
"Did that scare you?" I laughed.
"No!" He buffed. "Just... A bit startled is all."
"Should we go somewhere dry?" He asked, scanning the terrain for shelter. The drops were coming down a bit faster. I nodded quickly, standing up. He did as well, and we briskly walked out of the orchard.
"Library." I pointed. He nodded, linked his arm with mine, and we walked into the library. Miraculously, Angelica, Eliza, and Peggy were talking to the librarian. They all turned when we entered. Samuel's reddish-brown hair was dripping. I had taken out the ribbon so it didn't get tangled.
"Bianca!" Eliza smiled, glancing between us. Peggy winked at me. Samuel saw and laughed.
"It's raining." I told them.
"Fantastic." Angelica sighed.
"We were finishing up with the invitations." Peggy grinned. She was holding one more envelope and walked over to us. "The last one."
It read: Samuel Seabury.
"The wedding invitation?" He guessed, looking up at Eliza. She nodded, stepping over as well.
"You will be able to attend, yes?" She asked.
"I believe so." He nodded. "Congratulations."
"Thank you." She smiled warmly. Peggy yawned and glanced at Samuel.
"I don't think we've formally met." She declared. "Margarita Schuyler, but I'll let you call me Peggy."
"Lovely name." He shook her hand. We rarely use her actual name, Margarita.
"And 'Samuel' is... Okay." She said slowly. Eliza shoved her arm. "I mean, it's a great name!"
"Thanks." He chuckled. Angelica now came over to our cluster.
"Hello, Samuel." She greeted him.
"Good afternoon." He replied politely.
"Shall we go home?" She asked, looking at Eliza. She nodded hesitantly.
"Samuel, would you like to walk us home?" Eliza asked.
"Of course." He nodded with a smile.
"Daddy's going to be mad." Peggy reminded us.
"Near our house." Eliza corrected herself.
"Peggy, I'm going to tell you one last time. Do not, under any circumstances tell Father about Samuel." Angelica told our little sister firmly. She nodded vigorously.
"I need you to say it." I pressed. Peggy rolled her eyes.
"I will not tell Daddy that you were with Samuel Seabury today." She looked at the four of us one by one. Samuel laughed and I smiled.
"Good." Angelica nodded. "Let's go."
As we stepped into the rain, Samuel took off his coat and held it over my head like an umbrella. I pushed it back over to him.
"I don't need it, but thank you." I told him. He nodded and put his coat back on.
"I'm going to write a letter to your father." He whispered in my ear.
"Why?" I looked at him. Our faces were very close when I did this and he jumped back.
"So I can tell him that I'm going to fight in the war." He told me. I didn't need a reminder.
The five of us stopped a block away from our house, where we met up with Alexander.
"Alexander." Samuel greeted him, giving my future brother in-law's hand a shake.
"Samuel." Alex returned the greeting. Eliza glanced at me triumphantly.
"I've made arrangements to cover this up as much as possible." She beamed, planting a kiss on Alexander's cheek. I was caught off guard when Samuel kissed mine. Peggy saw this and shoved her way in between us.
"Leave room for Jesus." She ordered, planting a hand on Samuel's chest and one on mine. She was glaring at the both of us, but particularly Samuel. As soon as she stepped away, I returned a kiss to his cheek. Alexander saw this.
"Woah, woah!" He rushed up and did the same thing Peggy did (without laying a hand on me, of course). "That's my little sister, leave her alone!"
Samuel out his hands up in defeat. They seemed to be friends. Samuel hissed something in Alex's ear and his face lit up.
"Really?" He gasped. Samuel shushed him.
"Tell no-one." Samuel ordered. Alexander nodded.
"We really do have to be leaving now." Angelica reminded us. Samuel nodded and stepped away, allowing us to leave. He snuck me a sly look as I turned to leave. I stifled a laugh and scrunched up my face. He laughed and I had to turn around and go with my sisters and brother in-law.
