Chapter 9
The bus jostled around as slowly the rest of yours class filed in. Tenya Iida, the class rep and known super speedster, tried his best to keep order, but the distinct excitement in the air prevented quiet and calm.
You sat alone in the back of the open-seated bus, dull gaze scanning your peers. Everyone wore their costumes, any damages done already fixed. Izuku sat with a cluster of peers, talking about quirks. You snickered, turning eyes to the window. Of course it was quirks, that what he knows best. Aizawa sensei had explained before that today's training was at a separate building, dealing with different zones of disaster.
You were plenty excited but you didn't really have anyone to convey it to. Once upon a time you could spend every second blabbering to Izuku about it but now that he had his own friends you didn't want to bother him. You were slowly melding into the background.
You kept your thoughts to yourself, watching scenery pass as you debated points to yourself inside your head. Your attention to yours internal arguments was only interrupted when you heard Bakugou snap at Tsu, the fun little Frog quirk you'd grown to like. Your eyes locked on to the event, sitting up in your seat slightly to watch.
"But Bakugou's always angry so he'll never be that popular." She noted, looking at Bakugou straight in the eye.
"What did you say?!" Bakugou yelled. "I'll kick your ass!"
"Well, seeing as we all know your personality from this, I'd have to say she's right." Kaminari chimed. His quirk was electricity, but you took note that he had next to no common sense.
"I'll make you regret the day you were born you loser!" Bakugou growled, anger oozing from him.
You couldn't hold back as you laughed. It boomed over the air and silenced the conversation. You clasped a hand over your mouth, trying to muffle the noise but failing miserably. Just the irony of it all drove you to tears.
"What's so funny?!" Bakugou barked as you howled with laughter.
You wiped a stray tear as you looked at him. "Karma's a bitch isn't it?" I asked in a mocking tone. "The great Kacchan getting teased about his temper. How the tides have turned..."
"Such you-"
"Weak-ass Elemental bitch. Yes yes, I know Kacchan." You emphasized the nickname only you and Izuku called him, making his face erupt red with anger.
"You're asking to get your ass kicked!" He spat.
"I'm stating facts." You said calmly, smirk still resting on your lips.
Kaminari chuckled to himself, looking at Izuku after watching me and Bakugou. "Wow, your sister has balls of steel..." He commented.
"Heh, yeah..." Izuku muttered, his expression falling slightly as his eyes met yours. Your face reddened slightly and you looked away, back out the window.
He always knew when you were acting just a little off. No doubt he'd pester you about it after school. Can't wait. After a few moments, Iida saved the silence by restarting conversation about the Rescue training. Both you nor Bakugou spoke another word.
Soon after, you arrived at the building and you shuffled off the bus with the rest of class 1-A. You were greeted by the hero Thirteen. They looked like they were wearing a space suit, except for the playful yellow boots on their feet. You smiled, remembering him from a phase you had as a kid when you were obsessed with his quirk, black hole.
"Hello students and welcome to my facility! The Unforseen Simulation Joint, or as you can call it, USJ!"
I laughed to myself. I always did want to go to Universal Studios. Thirteen launched into a spiel about the use of their quirk for aid and how quirks can be a double-edged sword. You knew all too well that fact. So rather than listen to the speech you crept further up in the crowd to peer at the amusement, park like setup. Your heart jumped when you saw the ship wreck zone. The likely hood of you being assigned there over one of the many locations was slim but you still hoped.
I wonder where All Might is... he was supposed to be here for rescue training.
You blinked as a cheer rose from the crowd of students and you finally came back down to Earth. "Alright," Aizawa sensei hummed, clapping his hands together as he looked at us. "Now that that's over, let's get to work."
You grinned excitedly, the lights flickering around you. It seemed queued. "Nice effect..." You muttered to yourself.
The fountain at the enter of the USJ shuttered, water stopping and starting again as a heavy feeling clung to the air. "What's with the bad vibes..."
Suddenly from in front of the fountain appeared a dark vortex, swirling to life then growing in size. Your breath stopped as you watched with wide eyes, villains slowly appeared from the thick substance.
"Is this part of the training?" Kirishima asked, looking at the approaching villains in curiosity.
"Thirteen! Protect the students!" Aizawa commanded, his quirk flaring to life as he yanked the scarf around his neck. He launched towards the foes with no fear in his unblinking eyes. You finally took a breath only to gasp. Your hands shook in fear.
Villains.... why... why are they here?!
I couldn't help but tremble softly. When I blinked, the image of my mother appeared, her still body resting in a casket as I said goodbye, ignoring the wounds that peeked from her sleeves and collar.
Villains....
I could feel my hands clutching into tight fists. These low life intruders picking on a bunch of rookies. Izuku was muttering about Aizawa's quirk, how it wasn't fit for battle. Not fighting like this.
"We have to help!" I snapped, looking at my classmates. "We can't just let him die out there!"
"I can't get through to the Academy Kaminari reported. "We don't have any backup on the way."
I could hear the leader of the thugs yelling, a blue-haired freak with hands clinging to his thin and sickly frame. His clothes were simple but the way he stood, the way he spoke, it was demonic, oozing insanity. Thirteen tried to keep us calm. "Everyone relax! They must be jamming our signal, if they were able to get in that would be no problem."
"We're isolated over here, it's not like a hero is gonna stroll by and come help." I said frankly.
"Actually," Todoroki chimed in, "that might work in our favor. They probably picked this place because it's so far away from the main campus. They knew that we'd be here with little protection, and from the sounds of it they were expecting All Might."
"Get to the point." Bakugou snapped.
"Well, if they wanted All Might without alerting the other heroes, they probably didn't take any precautions. They're going to have to keep us here. So if we can get someone outside..."
"We can get the help we need!" I gasped. "We don't have any teleportation quirks or anything like that, but..."
I pointed to Iida. "You! You can run fast enough to get the other heroes! You have to do it!"
"What?! I can't just leave you guys here!" He protested.
"Iida, you have to be a hero." Thirteen interjected. Being a hero is about protecting others, not fighting until you drop. You need to get the other heroes."
"But-"
"You won't be going anywhere!"
You whipped around as the shadow of the vortex guy appeared over you. He planted himself in front of the door, his portal blocking the way. He growled as his quirk snapped towards you, blowing you back into a portal and blinding you effectively. You couldn't do anything but brace yourself as you fell through into an unknown location. When you opened your eyes again, you were falling.
Below you was only rubble and wreckage. You growled to yourself and balled your hands in fist. "Seriously?! Here of all places?! Fuck you fate!"
Your body melted into air and you slowly floated to the ground. As your feet touched to the ground, your body reappeared and you tied your hair back in your mother's ribbon once again. "Not even the burning buildings. At least there I could manipulate the flames." You murmured.
As you opened your eyes, iris now pale by the mask augmentation, you found yourself surrounded by crooks, most of them looking dirty and rugged. "He only sent us a little girl? This has gotta be some kinda joke." One growled.
Your ears perked as a loud boom cracked through the air. Of course he got sent here too. "Oh! That one sounds interesting!" A scrawnier one yelped. "Let's finish her off and go help with those ones."
"Excuse you!" You barked, gritting your teeth. "Don't underestimate me!!"
You shoved your hand out and a sharp slice of air ripped through, knocking the foe down along with two of his buddies. "What the hell?!" Another gulped.
"Get it together! She's just a weak little bitch!"
This one had an extra set of eyes and arms. He charged at you, one set of arms snatching at you and the other swinging at you. You disappeared, your ribbon clinging against his body as he ran straight through you. You shot up into the air and re-materialized as metal, driving your knees into his neck as gravity did the rest of the work.
He crumbled beneath you as you knocked him clean out and snatched your ribbon away. "Don't you dare touch my ribbon you filthy fucking lowlife!" You warned, stamping a foot in his side.
"Next!"
After a moment of hesitation the rest descended on you in a wave. You crouched down and launched into the center of them. You couldn't feel a few blow deep in your side, others grabbing at you but you merely smirked. Curling into a ball, flames billowed off of you, the heat searing flesh and blowing them back. Your nose wrinkled at the scent of burnt skin and hair. More came at you, adding to the few who still stood from your first wave. You fought your hardest and managed to barely keep up. However you paid no mind to how often you switched elements.
You skin burned from the mixture of pain in fire and turning to metal. Your body could only meld with air once or twice more before you would have to give that part up.
Explosion continued on a few buildings away from you. You glimpsed back for a moment and prayed for the poor villain getting his ass blown all the way to hell. Bad choice.
You took a hit to the gut while you were distracted and you blew back into a building wall. They cackled as you spat blood. In a way you felt embarrassed. It felt like you should be doing better.
I'm by myself. I get some leeway.
You gasped for breath as an arm wrapped around your neck. Slowly you choked, clawing at their arm. "Let- go!" You grunted.
"Hehe, beg some more won't you?" They purred in your ear. You almost gagged.
"How about this instead?"
You opened your mouth wide and chomped down on their arm, causing them to yelp. They dropped you and you smirked, licking the blood from your lip. You small an iron fist into their head and they stumbled back into a support beam.
You neglected to remember the buildings in this zone were exceptionally unstable and soon the building started to collapse.
You ducked from the building, the villain you bit crying out desperately as he became trapped in the falling rubble. You could hear his cries through the concrete chunks and laughed quietly. "Karma's a bitch!" You shouted.
When you turned to look again, your enemies were all down or running trembling before you. You smirked and turned away, finally noticing your slight limp as you walked. "Hm, must've landed weird." You hummed. "Better go check on the idiot."
Your body did melt into the air, but you noted it took longer than usual. "Dammit... I gotta cool it with the shifting." You muttered.
You soared up to the windows where the explosions came from and saw Bakugou and Kirishima winding down next to a pile of unconscious bodies. You perched yourself on the window frame and went back to normal, your body almost sighing in relief as you did. "Kirishima. Kacchan." You nodded, raising a brow when Kirishima jumped in surprise.
"(Y/N)! You must be the one who was fighting in the other building. Where are the others with you?"
You tilted your head and fell in the room, leaning against the wall. "What others? I got teleported alone." You muttered bitterly.
"You fucked up your quirk didn't you?" Kacchan hissed, making you jump.
"Fuck off Ash for Brains you're not my dad." You snapped. "And I took down the villains by myself. I'm fine."
"Like hell you are." Bakugou retorted. "You look like shit."
"Well you always look like shit. You don't see me commenting do you?" You shot back.
Kirishima held back a chuckle as you stood. Your head spun but you leaned against the wall to hide your nausea. You didn't want to seem weak. "Actually (Y/N), Bakugou's right. You don't look okay."
"Well I am!" You bit, stamping a foot. "Just drop it!"
"Your eyes are different colors." Bakugou said bluntly.
"I don't care."
"Last time that happened you-"
"Shut up asshole!" You yelled, chucking a piece of stone at him.
Bakugou batted it away and glared at you. His eyes widened and he lunged at you. You were about to scream at him when you felt your body yank backwards. You fell from the building through the window, a villain cackling from the outside wall. Kirishima yanked him in and a moment later you heard a cry of pain.
You turned and faced the ground, closing your eyes and trying to summon air once more. Your body throbbed with pain as you tried to force it, but it stalled. "Nonono! Not now!" You whined.
You threw your arms over your face and braced for impact. You grit your teeth and prayed. "God I swear of I survive I'll stop being such a douche to Bakugou over our differences, unless he's being a douche to someone I care about."
You felt an arm lock around your stomach and heat exploded beneath you, propelling you upward. Rather than down. You cried out on surprise and clung to the arm tightly as you narrowly slipped through a window and on to the floor.
You panted for breath, clutching your chest and focusing on your hands. They shook violently. It was the closest you'd ever come to dying. The thought scared you. "Hey," You heard someone talking but you didn't listen.
You were trying to soothe your panicked breaths. Your body was laced with pain from over exerting your quirk, your heart raced with adrenaline and fear, your lungs felt as thought they were being squeezed.
"(Y/N)," They said again.
You lifted your hand to your cheek slowly, taking off your mask and holding it in front of you. If death scared you so much, how were you supposed to be a hero? How could you let fear rule you so easily? You were acting like a child. An idiot who didn't recognize when your body's at its limits.
Tears were on your face and it made you angry. You rubbed at your face aggressively, making it seem irritated and red.
"(Y/N)!" They yelled, making you jump. You watched hands clasp around your wrist and you froze, breath still shaking. "Get it together won't you?! How are you supposed to help everyone if you break down that easily?!" He snapped.
You looked up, Bakugou's face displaying anger but something in his crimson eyes was different. Your heart skipped a beat and you took a deep breath. He seemed confused as you just looked at him. He saved you. He was the reason you didn't die.
You pulled your wrist from his grip and lunged at him. He yelped as you wrapped your arms around his neck and held on tight. "What the hell?! What the fuck are you doing?!" He barked.
"Thank you..." You muttered.
Bakugou went rigid but didn't push you away. You stopped shaking finally. You were thankful. "I'm so sorry Kacchan. Thank you for saving me."
You sat in silence for a second then you felt his arms around you. "Whatever. It doesn't matter." He grunted.
You laughed briefly and sat back. "Yeah, it doesn't." You said quietly, wiping your face.
You put your mask back on and stood shakily, your right leg still maintaining a limp. "Come on. We have to help everyone. We can't do anything just standing here." You said.
He grunted in response, nodding. You took note of the pink tint in his cheeks and snickered. "Hey Bakugou?"
"What?" He snapped.
"When we're done with this, we should hang out. I kinda need to make more friends. It's time I started moving on too."
"Huh?" He raised a brow. "Why would I hang out with you?"
Your hands lifted to your hair and you pulled the ribbon from its place. Your hair fell around your face and you put the ribbon in his hand. "Because you have to give that back to me." You said with a smile.
He blushed before stuffing it in his pocket. "Yeah, sure. Just don't die."
"No promises."
