Chapter 8
School got easier almost instantly. You weren't avoiding anyone, and to a degree, Bakugou wasn't acting as much like a dick as he usually did. Your classmates were surprised by your and Bakugou's change in behavior but it wasn't too much of a shift in the overall atmosphere.
You sat in class, silently scribbling your notes in your oversized notebook as Aizawa sensei rambled on about English slang.
Your eyes darted upward as the class bell rung and it was time for lunch. Packing your things quietly, you hummed to yourself as once again Uraraka and Izuku held their own riveting conversation.
Rolling your eyes, you left the room without the two, glancing back at them and snickering.
God they'll make an amazing couple someday.
The thought of passing your brother off on to a cute girl like her excited you and you giggled. You were almost skipping as you exited the classroom. As you swung around the corner, you slammed harshly against a hard chest and tumbled back. You groaned, rubbing your behind as you blinked the spots from your eyes.
When you looked up, a familiar hand hovered over your face and you followed it up to meet a familiar grin. "Oh! Hey Todoroki!" You chirped, taking his hand and allowing him to help you up. "Sorry, I should've been watching were I was going."
"It's fine. Are you okay?" He asked.
"Fine!" You hummed with a quaint grin. "Thanks for helping me up. Bye!"
"Yeah, er, uh wait!" He stuttered, grabbing your arm as you turned.
You froze, glancing back at him with a curious gaze. "What is it Todoroki?" You asked gently.
A pink gaze dusted his cheeks, though you didn't notice and his gaze fell downward to his hand on your arm. Removing it promptly, he cleared his throat and stuck his hands at his side.
"Well, I was wondering, because we never met after school, if we could have lunch together. I would still like to discuss an important matter with you." Todoroki requested, sounding almost unsure. It was unusual for a normally confident prodigy.
You rolled your eyes upward, tapping your chin as you tried to recall if there were any specific request you'd had for today's lunch. "Yeah, okay! I'm free today so we can totally meet at lunch." You concurred, nodding your head.
Todoroki smiled charmingly and you felt a slight haze of color fall over your face. Even to a strong lesbian with no attraction to him at all, he was fucking hot. "Shall I walk you then?" He asked, offering an arm in an old-fashioned gentlemanly way.
You laughed loudly and strung your arm through his, smiling. "You shall." You answered confidently.
He chuckled with you and you walked to lunch together, banter playful and entertaining. He paid for your lunch which you accepted gratefully. Soon after leading you to a farther corner of the cafeteria, not as populated as the easily reached front. You plopped down in your chair and placed your meal before you, muttering a quiet 'itadakimasu' before digging in to the meal. Todoroki watched you for a moment before eating his own food. You ate in silence for a few minutes until you lowered your silverware with a sigh. You dabbed at your face with a napkin in a ladylike manner then smiled. "Thanks for the meal Todoroki." You sang cheerfully. "What did you want to talk about?"
His eyes widened for a moment before he put down his fork and wiped his mouth the same way you had. "Ah, I almost forgot. Thank you for reminding me."
You waved it off and rolled your eyes. "Don't sweat it. Izuku forgets stuff all the time so I'm used to it."
Todoroki smiled. "You really are close to Midoriya aren't you?" He asked, tilting his head slightly.
"Well yeah. He's my brother." You said bluntly, raising a brow. "You couldn't see the resemblance."
Todoroki seemed genuinely surprised, hesitating for words as you laughed. "Relax! It's adoptive." You explained. "Izuku and his mom adopted me when we were little."
"Ah," Todoroki nodded, leaning back in his chair as though this were an interview. "If you don't mind my asking, what happened to your biological parents?"
Your face fell slightly and you laughed uneasily to keep yourself from frowning. "Well, actually they're both gone." You muttered. "Dad was gone by a young age and mom was killed in a villain attack. The same night I met Izuku too."
Your hand drifted to the ribbon in your hair and you tried to laugh. "My ribbon used to belong to my mom. She had long beautiful hair, but it always got in her face so she tied it back. This ribbon is the one she wore the night she died."
Your voice seemed to fade as you spoke. Eyes now downcast, you watched your hands. A chill went up your spine as Todoroki wrapped his hands around yours, surprising you as you looked up. "I wish I could have met her." He said gently.
You chuckled and wiped at your eyes with the heel of your hand. "Yeah, I wish she could've met a lot of people too." Silence hung in the air like a veil before Todoroki rushed to fill the uncomfortable blank.
"So (Y/N), the other day you were using your quirk to pin Bakugou and I down correct?" He asked.
"Y-Yeah!" You admitted, smiling.
"I was wondering about your quirk. I remember at the physical exams Midoriya had to move your clothes to the treeline before you came back, and in the scenario training you had that, malfunction... while fighting Bakugou. Would you mind explaining?" He requested.
"Oh! That's easy. In lamest terms it's called Adaptation, but in detail my quirk is referred to as Elemental Adaptation. My quirk allows my body to meld with and control air, metal, fire and water. However, each one leaves it's on downside, kinda like if I had four quirks. With my air quirk, I become intangible and anything I'm wearing falls through onto the ground."
"Aw, so that's why Midoriya had to move your clothing." Todoroki observed. "What about the rest of the elements?"
You thought a moment then nodded. "When I use metal adaptation, it's little bit like hardening except, since my body's genetic makeup is for four different body types, I don't have the numbness in my pain receptors for when I equip metal flesh. So it's extremely painful. When using fire, unless I spend a fraction of my focus dedicated to preventing it, my fire leaves burns on my skin. Most of the time it's more of a sunburn but if I push too hard it results in severe burns. When adapted to water, though I move incredibly fast and I can change the current, I'm extremely sensitive to temperature change. If it gets too cold or too hot I'll be forced into my humane body and I'll be sick to my stomach or passed out after I resurface."
"That seems awful. Having a unique set of downfalls for each side of your quirk." Todoroki sympathized.
You shrugged. "Well I mean, we all have our weaknesses right? Even you have to have one. It's important to know the weaknesses of the people around you in case you ever get in a pinch."
"Will you ever put me in a pinch?" He asked, raising a brow as he smirked.
"As long as you don't piss me off, probably not." You teased. "Though you'd probably be able to drop my ass even if I didn't tell you my weakness. I'm horrible in hand to hand."
"I'm hoping I'd never need to take you down." He replied.
You shrugged. "Hope for the best, Prepare for the worst." You chimed.
Todoroki tapped on the table and nodded. A sigh fell from him as he met your gaze with steely determination. You almost flinched, surprised by his change in mood. "Speaking of hope, I'm ready to have that important discussion with you." He addressed you with an almost formal tone.
"What? We weren't already doing that?" You teased.
He cracked a smile as he took your hand in his and looked into your eyes. "(Y/N), I need to tell you something important." He paused for a second, waiting as you nodded to continued. "I've found myself infatuated with you. I'm entranced by the way you smile. I'm enchanted by your melodious laugh. I'm mesmerized by your skillful fighting. And after watching from afar I've finally decided to confess my feelings and request you consent to be my girlfriend."
Crimson stained your cheeks as he stared at you, eagerly awaiting your answer. Blushing intensely, you pulled your hand back and shook your head. "I'm sorry Todoroki, but I'm not looking to be in a relationship. Right now, more than anything I just want to get through school. I truly am sorry."
His face fell slightly, but soon a smile overshadowed his disappointment and he nodded. "I understand. Thank you for your time." He said quietly.
Slowly he stood, taking his tray with him as he left. Even though the bell rang right after, you felt guilty. You felt it was your fault he got up and left. Even if lunch wasn't over, he would have gone. Standing, you lifted your tray and discarded your remains. You waited by the side as the cafeteria cleared, your peers filing out until you were alone in the vast hall. Your steps echoed as you exited, trailing long behind the crowd of students.
That was my first time rejecting someone. Was I too harsh? Is that why I feel guilty? Maybe I feel guilty because I actually do like him. I mean, he's nice looking no doubt. And he's really polite and kind but I've never really been interested in that way. Or have I? I'm so confused.
You were brought back to reality as a rough hand slapped upside the back of your head. It was hard enough to break your trance, but not quite enough to really hurt. Your palm cradled the vague apothecary where you were hit and you turned to look at your attacker.
Your expressions softened and you offered a small smile as you gazed at a familiar ash blonde hot head. He scowled, but it seemed for forced for effect then the usual resting bitch face.
"Oh, hey Kacchan " You said quietly, tucking your hair behind your ear.
He grunted and stared at you. You remained frozen in your spot as his face grew uncomfortably close, making you squirm slightly. "What's your problem?" He asked harshly, his breath fluttering against your mouth before he pulled back.
"Nothing!" You yelped, voice too high. "I-I mean nothing. I'm fine."
"You don't seem fine. You're flustered." He said bluntly.
"No. I'm not. I'm just tired ya know? I didn't sleep much last night so I'm starting to slow down is all." You bluffed, crossing your arms. "What are you doing so far behind everyone else?"
"I usually follow up at the end. Then I don't have to deal idiots stepping on me or shoving me."
You started to walk, Kacchan at your side as you laughed. "You are aware you could just blast yourself to the front and not deal with that." You mused.
"I'd rather not waste the effort."
"Since when do you pick your battles?" You asked.
"I do."
You snorted, rolling your eyes. "Oh, so you willing act like a douche on a daily basis. Makes me wonder what normal Kacchan acts like."
He hesitated before growling and shoving his hands into his pockets. You snickered, folding your hands behind you as you smiled. "You do know you don't have to act like a jerk. You could just be, ya know, civil."
"There's nothing wrong with how I act!" He snapped.
"Except for your treat people like garbage and think of yourself as a god."
"It's not my fault they're all weak."
Your face fell slightly. "So I'm weak? Is that why you tormented me for so long?"
He seemed caught off guard as you looked at him, expression not accusational but intrigued. "No! You're not weak it's just-"
"I'm not weak but I'm not as good as you." You supplied. Sighing, you rubbed your arm and shook your head. "Dammit Kacchan, I almost thought you had it. I guess I was wrong..."
He looked at you, seeming confused. "What the hell are you talking?" He snarled.
You froze, waiting as he slowed to a stop and turned towards you. Your eyes trailed down the hallway, targeting the security cameras. Slowly they returned back to Bakugou. "We're going to be late for class." You said quietly, walking past him.
His grip clasped around your wrist and you growled. "Bakugou, I won't miss class because you're impatient and dumb."
"No! Tell me what you meant!" He ordered.
Your pulled away from his grip, walking past quietly. "I'm not going to instigate a fight." You said.
"I'm not letting you go until you tell me what you meant."
You gritted your teeth, looking back at him. "Kacchan, you've put yourself on such a pedestal, you started seeing everyone else as nothing more than side characters. People to kick around. You're so full of yourself. It's... pathetic."
His face grew red. "Pathetic?! Who are you calling pathetic you-"
"I was right." You interrupted. "Whatever Bakugou. I'm going to class."
"Oh no you're-" You cut him off.
"I'm. Going. To. Class." You hissed, tone low and dangerous.
He didn't speak again as you walked away from him. He never showed back up in class either.
