winter ball.
I took a seat, Nova entered the hall silently after me since she didn't want eyes on her. She sat beside me and quickly apologised for pushing me in. Everyone was sitting down as if they were preparing to watch something.
"What's going on?" I whispered to Nova, "the show is about to begin." She replied, as music started playing. "So the Paradox has a little dance show at the winter ball? How fun." I sarcastically said, playing with the ring my father handed to me before I left for today. It had a blue crystal embedded into it, it symbolised him. And his half of me.
"I think you might wanna watch," Nova nudged me, making me look at her with a confused expression, "why..." I muttered under my breath as I followed her eyes to watch the stage. "Oh. My. God."
"And that is what he missed the rehearsal of," Nova chuckled, standing up to clap along with the other students. He walked off of the stage and headed towards some boys, I watched him as he patted off the sweat on his neck.
"Hey," a voice spoke beside me, I turned my head confused to see a boy sitting where Nova had sat before. My pupils searched the place to find Nova clicking her fingers at me while winking. I shook my head and sighed at her actions. "Am I boring you that much already?" He furrowed my eyebrows at my sigh. "Oh no no, it's just- never mind. Hi," I smiled, extending my hand forward for a handshake.
"I'm Isaac, Isaac Freyer, an angel. You might know my father, he's the highest ranked minister," he boasted while accepting my hand. "No I haven't actually, I'll be sure to learn more about him." I broke his pride, not so fond of his attitude. "What about you? Professor Zeke didn't mention your last name. You're Jewel what?" He questioned.
"I'm Jewel... whit- Whinehouse," I struggled not to smile. "Ah so we're using made up names, then pleasure to meet you miss Whinehouse, myself Mr Annoyinghouse." He got up and bowed dramatically, making the corners of my lips tilt up. "No but really all jokes aside you'll learn I'm one annoying fucker," he sat back down.
"I'm not the most tolerable person either to be fair, perhaps we'll make a good pair," I suggested, "of friends of course," I finished. "Right," he nodded. "So Jewel, tell me about yourself," Isaac started a new conversation topic.
"What you wanna know about my trauma and the way my entire life's been a lie or my favourite colour?" I shot a question at him as I stared into his soul. He choked on his own spit and started stumbling over his words, struggling to say anything. "I'm messing with you." I placed my hand on his shoulder as he released a sigh of relief.
"Jewel, I see you've met Isaac," Taehyung approached us with a drink in hand. "Kim."
"Freyer." They both exchanged tension filled nods leaving me in an awkward situation. "I'll go get myself a drink," Isaac got up and walked off, as soon as he was at a distance with us Taehyung scoffed. "He's the dickhead that asked out the girl I wanted to go with, and here he is flirting with you." He sipped his drink, "ew and now he's back to her." I followed Taehyung's eyes to see Isaac with a girl in a sparkly blue dress. "That's the girl you wanted to go with?" I raised an eyebrow. "That's the girl, everyone, wanted to go with," he replied.
"Her names Clara Anderson, a demon and the daughter of our potions professor. Her eyes are blue like the ocean, and her orange locks are so wonderful, have you seen the way they effortlessly look perfect?" He looked towards her with heart eyes making me chuckle, since she was currently flirting with 5 boys at once.
"Lover boy, snap out of it, she hasn't even spared you a glance," I warned. "Then let's make her look at me," he put down his drink and looked down at me sitting in my chair. "No."
"I didn't even say anything!"
"I'm not going to help you make her look at you," I took the glass he put down and drank the juice since I was thirsty.
"Fine, I guess there's more fish in the sea," he shrugged, not even attempting to convince me since he knew it wouldn't work. "Ok first of all, we're not fish. If you're going to compare us to anything at least compare us to something that doesn't stink." I told him, "alright, there's more flowers in the field," he looked at me for approval. "Now that's better," I nodded in satisfaction.
"These songs are so boring." I let out a sigh of tediousness, struggling not to fall asleep, Taehyung heard me and left without a word. I felt eyes on me, like a weird stare, it made my eyes jump around. The headteacher was looking at me straight from the teachers seats right at the front of the grand hall.
It was a look like he was scanning my face, analysing my actions, almost interrogating me without words. Suddenly the lights in the hall changed from a strong pink to a romantic blue, and the music was actually tolerable. I broke eye contact with the weird professor and looked around to find Taehyung leaving what seemed like the person who was controlling the music, sort of the magic version of a DJ.
Taehyung walked towards me with a proud smile, "hows the music now?" He tilted his head, "I guess it's alright," I replied with a smile. "Hey Jackson, dance with me." He reached his hand forward as he bowed in courtesy, it was so out of the blue it confused me. I looked around and saw everyone was dancing, like literally everyone, even Nova found a boy she was jamming with. I realised Mr Taehyung here was feeling a little, left out. "I don't get why you think I'd wanna dance with you," I teased.
"And I don't get why you thought what I said was a question."
He used a dominant tone before grabbing my wrist, pulling me extremely close to him as he slid his hand around my waist, interlocking our fingers with his other hand. "I'm gonna kill you," I glared at him.
"Not dressed like that you won't, all I have to do is run and watch you trip over your long ass dress while chasing me," he gave a cocky smile making me roll my eyes. "I hate you," I told him, "shut up you know you love me," he whispered back teasingly. "Very funny," I scoffed at his confidence. The song changed again, as Taehyung quickly spun me around, leading my body to dance in sync with his.
Although I was hesitant, I joined in with him at the first chorus, we managed to sync our moves, improvising the entire thing as we got everyones attention.
"I think that's the happiest I've ever seen you," he said, "well music is my happy place, it helps me escape from my reality, just like dreams," I replied.
"Ah is that why you always had those headphones plugged in? I thought it was weird, considering not many people blast music after a death of a loved one. But I can see why you did," he said. "It's a bummer that my phone doesn't work here, I've gotta buy a new one so I can get a good nights sleep too." I told him, making him smile. "I can always sing you a lullaby you know," he flirtatiously winked, making me smile as he spun me around, I tripped on my own dress but he caught me before I fell.
"I'm ok I'm ok," I stood up straight again.
-flash- I blinked my eyes a few times, it was happening again. Memories of Seojun that were safely stored in my heart, appeared again as I looked into Taehyung's pupils. I let go of him immediately, looking down as I took deep breaths. "Everyone is going to die because of you Jewel."
A mans voice in my head spoke making me furrow my eyebrows in confusion. "Who..." I felt suffocated, this wasn't my dad. The person kept repeating those words, everything was a blur. I looked around, everyone was staring at me, the music had stopped. "Are you ok?" I could hear Nova ask as she approached me, I was surprised I even made out what she said, there was this loud ringing that had started in my head. I excused myself and ran out the hall, searching frantically to find a room to hide, as if hiding would stop the voice in my head.
I found the bathrooms, and immediately fell to my knees. I banged on my head, scrunching up my hair. "Get out of my head," my shaking voice uttered. "I don't want to, it's so easy to have you helpless, so much for that powerful prophecy aye?" He chuckled.
"I've been patient for so many years, I hope you don't, disappoint. After all, you wouldn't want to lose all these new friends you've been making." He snickered, each second of it making me want to rip out my own head.
"GET OUT OF MY HEAD," I screamed at the top of my lungs. It stopped. The ringing, and the voice. I rested my head against the toilet door, taking deep breaths. Out of habit, I reached down to my hip, expecting there to be a pocket with my phone and headphones inside. I can't even escape. My only escape. I covered my face, inhaling deeply as I smacked my chest, hoping to calm down.
"Jackson you in there?" I heard a voice on the other side of the door. "No she's not, look somewhere else," I spoke out, trying to change the tone of my voice. I sighed as I heard him; Taehyung, sit down and lean against the door. I knew he could hear my hyperventilating, the walls were so thin I could hear his normal breathing.
"But I know someday I'll make it out of here."
His deep voice started singing amidst the silence, it was the song I was blasting in class, the day after my godfathers death, Taehyung's first day at my school. Unknowingly my breath had calmed down, heartbeat returning to normal. Taehyung continued to the chorus, with such a reassuring tone, without words he told me that it was ok. That everything was going to be ok.
It was nearing the end of the song, just some adlibs left but he pulled them off so well.
Taehyung POV
Her voice as she attempted to join in was so heartbreaking, she was really trying her best but it cracked, like she were on the verge of losing it. She completed the very last ad-lib, I swear to you it sounded like a voice you'd hear at the gates of heaven after you die. After 5 minutes of utter silence the door opened, I was still leaning against it so you could say I almost fell flat back.
I quickly got up and fixed my jacket before looking at her. Makeup a little smudged, hair looking crazy as ever. She faked a smile to avoid talking about the fact that all she needed was a little song to calm down. I released a breath as I stared down at her, the corners of my lips tilting up so slightly, but so genuinely.
There's chaos in her eyes but nothing has ever looked more beautiful.
