what?
"I knew that if he was near me he'd end up hurt, and I didn't push him away. My selfishness cost him his life. When Heon first threw those words at me I thought it was nonsense. But the more I thought about it, the more I realised that I did kill him. I took part in taking his life," I looked down. Taehyung shuffled closer to me, about to put his arm around me.
"Yeah don't do that," I got up just as he was about to rest his hand on my shoulder, so it just dropped down. "Do what I wasn't going going to do anything what are you even talking about what I wasn't worried about you-"
I hushed him by putting a finger on his lips, "you talk way too much," I put my hands in my pockets before walking away.
"Oye Jackson, did you forget about our deal? You have to show me your magic," he called out for me.
"After hearing that story, you really think my powers work?" I turned around, as he ran up to me. "Wait, your powers haven't activated yet? How, most of us get them at the age of 13," he spoke. "Well not mine. All that fame for what, I can't do anything," I sighed.
"Are you sure? Just try a spell, that can't be possible," he said, not believing me. "I thought spells were a wizard thing," I played with the loose threads of my blazer. He chuckled and looked at me.
"So... what, you thought, we just pointed at shit and it'd work? No words no nothing just, boom?" He slowly walked towards me which was weirdly intimidating, but he had this childish smile plastered on his face wanting to tease me so badly. "Well, I was never taught anything how am I supposed to know?" I said, pushing him away.
"So maybe your powers are activated, you just don't know how to use them. Uhm, to be honest I'm kind of bunking magic school to be here, one of the only spells I remember is Aurorum. It's a telekinesis spell, you can move things around with it. It was the one I used in the science lab," he told me, what a useful guardian angel. "But I don't remember you saying the word when doing it?" I raised a question.
"Once you get really good at a spell you can just say it in your head, now stop being so suspicious, I'm here to help you. So c'mon, take your hand, point at that flower pot, and say, aurorum," he told me, gesturing towards the corner of the garden. I took a deep breath, pointing towards the art of nature, "aurorum."
Nothing.
"I told you they don't work," I sighed, quite embarrassed. He was so excited to see how 'powerful' my magic was, "that's so weird, I mean I have heard of a case like this." He said, making me glad that maybe I wasn't the only one, "really? Who was it?" I asked, he gulped and started thinking, "just my, dads friends neighbours, niece. Yeah she got it baaad, legend has it her powers still don't work," he bluffed. Useless.
"I mean, in general I've heard they automatically activate when you're desperate for them, that's why some of us get them at an earlier age." He said, "that's it? I just have to be desperate?" I raised my eyebrow making him shake his head.
"It's not that simple, you actually have to have a strong reason for being desperate. Like, my friends powers activated at 11, her house was burning down. They lived in the middle of the woods with no one else around, her parents worked late hours for the ministry. Her brother was stuck inside, and that was proper desperation, her powers activated and she was able to hose down the entire house in a matter of seconds." He explained.
"In short you put someone you care for in danger... if the love you have for that person is strong enough, it would trigger your desperation to save them, therefore awakening your powers," he finished. "Well, throw that method in the bin, I have no one I care for," I told him.
"You seemed like you cared a lot about Mr Kim," he spoke out. "I hope you aren't suggesting putting the only person I have left in my life in danger," I raised my eyebrow at him. "C'mon, we aren't talking grave danger here. I mean it would require quite a lot of danger but, you have to get your powers to work Jackson, this is more serious than you think," he attempted to convince me.
"A no is a no."
"But-"
"You know Kim, you seem a lot more desperate to get my powers to work than I am," I walked towards him slowly, eyeing him closely before giving up. "Why is it so hard to get a read on you?" I muttered under my breath. "Maybe it's a sign that you should stop trying to read an innocent person who's trying to help you," he replied, fixing his blazer.
"I've been chased by evil my entire life, I have all the reason to stay suspicious of you till the end." I shrugged, walking off once again. I exited the school from the back, climbing over the fence.
"JACKSON YOU GOTTA STOP WALKING AWAY- oh shit." Taehyung ran after me, but covered his eyes seeing me jump over with a skirt on.
"I'm wearing shorts underneath," I hit the fence to tell him that I had made it over, he soon followed after.
"I thought you liked school," he said, out of breath, "and I thought you were fit, I guess we're both wrong." I shook my head at him, throwing him a water bottle. "But actually, I do like school, I just don't exactly like the people in it," I continued.
"I've noticed." He opened the bottle cap, attempting to take a sip. I tipped the water bottle up, dropping it on his face. "Yeah, that sarcasm isn't going to work with me," I crossed my arms and continued my walk as if I hadn't done anything. He caught up to me, wiping the water off his face with the sleeves of his blazer.
"I've said a ton of rude shit and THIS is what triggers you?" He sighed. "I just don't get you," he said as we walked onto a bridge, I took a seat on the concrete. "Don't stress it, no one does," I said, looking up at the boy who seemed lost while looking at something in the distance. Curiously, I followed his eyes, swivelling my head to the other side to see a young girl who looked just 11, standing up on the fence of the bridge.
"You don't think she's about to..." Taehyung uttered worriedly, running towards her, like a hero he pulled her down. I lazily got up from the floor and followed after him. "WHY DID YOU STOP ME?!" She yelled in the boys face.
"Honestly why did you stop her? Let the girl do what she wants." I spoke out, leaving her speechless, I put my hand on her shoulder. "I'll stop him from interrupting you, go ahead," I told her. Taehyung got up - he had fallen onto the floor as he pulled her down - and crossed his arms. "You can't be serious Jackson," he sighed.
"I just want to die," she cried, hiding her face in her arms as she sobbed. Taehyung attempted to comfort her but she slapped away his hand, standing right near the fence. I walked towards her, staring her dead in the eyes. "Do you really want to die?" I tilted my head, making her nod.
"Then die."
I pushed her.
She screamed as she landed flat into the water, "ouch," I said, leaning my hand on the fence, resting my face on it as I looked down into the water, watching her struggle. "JACKSON ARE YOU FUCKED IN THE HEAD? Why on earth would you do that?" Taehyung yelled at me.
"I felt like it," I shrugged, putting my hands into my pockets. "You're crazy..." Taehyung was about to jump into the water, but he looked around and sighed. "There's no one watching," I heard him utter to himself. He took a deep breath, making a circle gesture with his hand, which made a blue light appear. "Acceo."
He raised his hand, and as he did, the girl rose from the water, he rested her on the floor. The sight was quite magnificent. It makes me want to be able to do the same... but I can't. The girl was unconscious which was I think a positive thing for Taehyung, since there's no way he's allowed to use magic outside the magic realm. He pressed on her stomach making her cough out water and she was completely fine.
"You tried to kill me!" She pointed at me, sitting up straight. "No, I was just trying to show you that you don't wish to die," I said, kneeling down to the height she was at.
"In your eyes, I saw a will to live. There's this Arabic expression which states that, you don't want to die, rather you wish to kill something inside of you. And you realise that now don't you kid? When you fought to survive, when you struggled in the water. That was your body begging you to stay alive, listen to it," I whispered. I got up and took off my coat, throwing it in her face thoughtlessly with an expression that would make you think I wanted to kill you, but it was just my resting face.
"You'll catch a cold."
I turned around, crossing my arms since it was winter and it was bloody cold. I walked away, hearing Taehyung chuckle before catching up to me.
"I thought I told you to stop walking away from me," He said to me, "I guess miss emotionless can still feel." He smiled before turning serious again in concern, "how were you so sure that she didn't want to die? What if I wasn't here to save her after you pushed her in? You would've killed someone-"
"But I didn't. The point is I didn't. If you weren't here I would've gotten her out myself so stop the crap." I cut him off as we reached a corner shop with seats outside. We bought little cartons of chocolate milk before sitting down.
"She reminded me of... me. After last year I couldn't live with myself. Guilt would eat me up as I couldn't even blink an eye without seeing the visual of him dead. Just like that girl I threw myself into a pool of water, only, I jumped from a much lengthier place, into a much deeper ocean. It was so high that you'd think I'd die just from the fall," I sighed.
"I was delusional, thinking that I wanted to die. But I didn't survive because I have something that I need to kill inside of me, rather I have something inside me that's keeping me alive. While I was struggling to breathe, all the memories of Seojun played in my head. The ones where he was laughing and talking about how one day he was going to travel the entire world. He thought there was so much more to life than what he had already seen, in short he wanted to live. And that's when I made my decision."
"I have to live for him."
"For the boy who died because of me."
