taehyung.
Chatter chatter chatter. Walking down the hallways of my new school, strangers eyes throwing daggers through me. Nervous? Not really. Just curious.
"Taehyung-ah!"
I turned around after hearing my name. It's just Heon, a mutual friend of mine. He threw his hand around my shoulder as if we were as close as blood brothers, it annoyed me. The unnecessary touch. He showed me around the school, introducing me to practically every girl there as if I had only come to school to date. I was friendly to everyone, but many of them took this kindness as flirting. Typical.
We entered first periods classroom, the teacher wasn't present yet so the pupils were scattered across the class. In the centre of this classroom sat a girl, completely lost in her own world. She had earphones plugged in, blasting music so loud that I swear I could hear the beat of it from the front of the class.
"Don't."
The familiar voice of Heon spoke out as he followed my eyes to notice who I was so carefully looking at. Confused at his one word sentence that didn't include any other information about what he exactly meant, I furrowed my eyebrows. "Don't like her. Don't even think about her. She's bad news." He continued, settling down at his desk, the teacher still hadn't arrived so I just grabbed a seat and sat in front of him.
"What do you mean?"
"Her names Jewel Jackson. A fucking weirdo I say. Her dad passed away yesterday so Mr Kim; our homeroom teacher, pleaded me and a couple other students to come with him to the funeral, since she has no family. As soon as we got there we were told to go back home, because apparently she didn't like our attempt to comfort her. She wasn't even crying, what a monster, I suspect she might've killed him-"
"Too far Heon." I stopped him in his sentence, I looked towards her in pity. She looked so numb, her eyes fixated on her phone, god knows what she was looking at.
"Anyways, don't go near her. She has this ominous energy that I just cannot stand." He finished off. I analysed Heon's current emotions, why was he so disgusted with her? My curiosity awakens, but I can't ask him anything right now. Suddenly all the students rushed to their seats, I noticed a teacher walk in with a handful of books.
"I hear we have a new student." He speaks. I stood up making my way to the front of the class, I bowed before plastering a huge boxy smile on my face. The class went dead silent so I could introduce myself, but that beat, that blasting music sound. It was still heard. She was still listening to music. Does she have no respect? I glanced towards the teacher to see if he would say absolutely anything to her for having those stupid earphones plugged in during lesson time. Nothing. My eyes danced around the class, no one cared about the excessively loud music. It was just me.
"Aren't you going to tell us your name?" The teacher snapped me out of my thoughts.
"Right. I'm Kim Taehyung, I hope we all get along," I spoke, weirdly not being able to get my eyes off of that fucking girl. She hasn't even noticed my existence, not once has she taken her eyes off of her phone. The way I just want to break that device and throw it into oblivion.
"You can take a seat next to... Miss Jackson," the teacher sighed, almost as if he felt bad for me, the only seat left was the one next to her. I didn't mind, I don't care about Heon's words. I walked over to my seat, but before sitting down I stood tall in front of her desk. All eyes were on me, as if I was committing some sort of crime. My attempt to catch her attention didn't work, so I reached over for her earphone, wanting to take it out so she could hear me. A feminine hand stopped me.
"Don't." I looked to my left to see a student, she shook her head, eyes warning me that I shouldn't. My eyes wandered down to her name tag placed on her uniform blazer, Yoon Seohyun. I looked down at 'Jewel' once again, she still hadn't bothered to acknowledge my presence. I threw my pride aside, deciding to finally sit down so the teacher could begin the lesson.
2 hours later
"Taehyung, I thought I told you to stay away from her, what were you trying to do at the start of the lesson?" Heon complained as I packed away my books into my bag. She was the first one to leave the class, before the teacher had even excused us. It's like she owned the place, who on earth does she think she is? She has such an unlikeable vibe. "Does she get bullied?" I asked. How could anyone at this school stand that girl? Heon chuckled as we headed to the canteen.
"Are you crazy? Have you seen her?" He said, confusing me with such an obvious question. "Of course I've seen her. Can you get to the point?" I rolled my eyes seeing him almost mock me with the tone he spoke in. He grabbed my chin and turned it to look in her direction. She was sitting on a table alone, surrounded by her own company.
The window next to her was open even in the winter, I knew only cold air was coming through, yet she didn't shiver nor show any signs of feeling. Her hair flew like those shampoo commercials, effortlessly looking, gorgeous. Suddenly my chin was pulled back. Heon sighed and made a "told you so" type expression.
"Don't fall in love kid. Everyone else is already smitten it's annoying." He scoffed. Ah, so that's the reason she doesn't get bullied. "The boys are all in love with her, and the girls are absolutely terrified of her, so she stays, untouched." He finished. But she looks so... delicate? So vulnerable.
"Why would anyone ever be scared of her?" I questioned again. "Just look into her eyes and you'll see why she makes everyone shit themselves, plus the rumours of her, are very much, displeasing." He replied without explaining what these rumours were. He then pulled me to the lunch queue, getting a simple sandwich with apple juice. I preferred home food, so I chose not to eat in school. We sat at a table far far away from hers, then I was met with Heon's other friends.
"This is Louis and Jae, the only kids you'll really need to know." He said, I shook hands with all of them. To be honest she was still on my mind, and it annoyed me. It was like she invaded my head, stealing my peace.
"You know Tae, you're quite handsome. Why don't you see if you can make a move on her?" Jae spoke, confusing me. "Oh c'mon, we can all see you staring at her," Louis continued, chuckling at my 'innocence.'
"I think it would work out, I think she goes for looks, remember last year-"
"Don't." Heon sternly cut Louis off, intriguing me. What happened last year? Trying to lighten up the tension that had risen between the group, I spoke. "You reckon? I guess I'll have to try out my charms." I ran my hands through my hair making the boys chuckle just the slightest.
"That'll be hard considering she rarely talks, I don't even think I've ever heard her voice." Jae shrugged. The bell rang, signalling the students to head to last period. After heading up the stairs we were wasting time in the hallway like every other student.
"Taehyung-ah, look there comes Jewel, go for it." Louis said, not waiting for my response before pushing me towards her. I tripped over my own foot landing straight on the floor, obstructing her way. I sighed before looking up, she was looking at me, she actually took her eyes off of her phone. I succeeded in catching her attention but it wasn't in the way I wanted to. Everyone stopped and stared while I chuckled awkwardly, rubbing my elbow that I had hurt.
"I guess you could say I literally, fell for you." I tried to bust a joke, obviously not working. Confidently I made eye contact with her.
Oh my... her eyes... they're, empty.
Somehow, despite being frozen by her gaze, I extended my hand out, hoping for her to help me up. Her arm unknowingly flinched in her skirts pocket, reading her face I could tell she was the surprised with herself, she had almost accepted my handshake. She stared at my hand blankly, before taking a big step over me to get past.
"It's okay." A soft voice uttered, smiling before me, accepting my hand that had started to ache from being in the air so long. She helped me up as I turned around to see that my friends had disappeared, god I'm going to kill Louis. "I'm Seohyun," she waved brightly.
"Yeah I'm not illiterate I can read your name tag." I replied, almost immediately regretting it since she was so sweet. "Sorry, I just, faced a shit ton of embarrassment a second ago." I sighed, facepalming as she chuckled ruffling my hair. I hate unnecessary touching.
"It's only your first day, don't stress it," she smiled, I excused myself since I was already quite late to next period. Once I entered the class the teacher sighed, "not a good reputation of punctuality already Mr Kim." She massaged her temples. I looked around for an empty seat and simply sighed at the only free option. Why do I sit next to her in all lessons?
I went and took a seat, I could already hear Jae and Louis telling me to talk to her. I don't even like this girl, should I even have to put in the effort?
"So we'll be doing a practical today. The people you're sitting next to are going to be your partners."
Fuck off. Just fuck off.
I hate science but I'll have to do absolutely everything because little miss gorgeous over here refuses to communicate with me. Considering she doesn't have those earphones in, I'm guessing her phone died.
"In this experiment, a chemical reaction between baking soda and vinegar creates 'lava' bursting out of a model volcano. As the reaction produces carbon dioxide gas, pressure builds up inside a plastic bottle hidden inside the volcano until the gas bubbles and erupts." She explained. This just sounds like a whole lotta effort.
"Teamwork will be needed for you guys to finish before the bell rings, I will keep you back until I am satisfied with your results." The teacher informed. I got up to get the materials for the model volcano, only to see that Jewel had already prepared them. I could tell she preferred doing things independently but she was slowing us down.
"Let me help you, there's only 15 minutes left, we'll never get this done." I said, noticing people were already done with their explosions, heading out with their free time. She ignored me, making me give up already. Soon enough the classroom was empty and the teacher went to get herself coffee. It was just me and her. I just wanted to go home and this stubborn girl wasn't letting me, my hands balled up into a fist seeing her take her time to complete everything.
"Is it fun? You know, to do absolutely nothing and still be the most feared person in the school. What, is this your little character? Acting all mysterious and quiet to get everyones attention. I thought you were interesting, turns out you're just an attention thirsty bitch," I purposely tried to annoy her. I wanted some sort of reaction, she still remained her composure, ignoring me like it was her favourite thing to do in the world.
"I heard you're emotionless too, what, is it so hard to just smile? Apparently you didn't even cry at your own fathers funeral, damn you're a monster-"
"Are you done?"
Her voice. It's so soothing. Like a drug addict I felt the urge to find a way to hear it again.
"No, actually I've just begun," I crossed my arms, leaning against the counter. "Move." She told me.
"Make me," I spoke out, I was in the way of the volcano model, so she couldn't complete it.
"Don't say I didn't warn you then." She shrugged, before throwing a pinch of something into the science product. I looked down into the model only for it to blow up in my face.
"Told you so."
