hope.
jewel pov.
This new boy has been testing me all day. He should just throw away all the curiosity, it'll get him killed, literally.
The incident in the hallway when he reached out for a handshake, I can't stop thinking about it. My hand flinched, that's so unlike me, I'm usually so good at ignoring these people. He forced me to talk, no not physically, but something about his words tortured me mentally, wanting to speak up for myself. His tone was weird, there was a hint of fear in the rude words he spoke out. Like he only said them to get me to talk, and that he didn't mean anything. Attention seeker.
"You didn't tell me it was going to blow up." He sighed, reaching for a towel that was behind me. I grabbed it before he could touch it, and threw it to the other side of the classroom. I shrugged. He grabbed my shoulders, pinning me against the wall, wiping his face with his blazer. "What's your problem?" He spat. I stared into his pupils, hoping my freakish eyes would scare him enough to make him leave. I had no energy to speak to him.
"You don't scare me Jackson," he tilted his head. Tired of him acting so big and strong, I kicked him in the shin, switching our positions in the blink of an eye. "You were saying?" I raised my eyebrow.
"What? I fake this aura to get attention? That I'm an attention thirsty bitch? You know what, you're right. I am. I totally give a flying fuck about the eyes that pierce through me every day. I actually love it. But do you know what I love even more? The constant feeling of despair and isolation that I'm incapable of showing. You could put a million people around me and I'll still feel suffocated with loneliness. Like you were going to say before I ever so rudely cut you off, I am indeed a monster. Because I scare myself more than they do."
I sighed, I don't talk usually. But the time I do I decide to talk more than necessary. Why did I feel so comfortable with him? He makes me want to talk forever.
"You're frustrated," he smiled out in awe, leaving me speechless at his sudden change in behaviour, and his weird response to that long unneeded speech. "I see you do have emotions," he tucked a piece of my hair behind my ear, disgusting me with his touch. I slapped his hand away.
"I thought your eyes were empty, but I see one emotion floating around in those illuminating orbs of yours." He rested his head back onto the wall while seemingly admiring my face. I coughed before asking, "what... emotion do you see?" I swallowed hard. Am I finally improving?
"Hope."
"I see hope to be normal. That's why you were so persistent on doing all this school stuff on your own, you wanted to stay back in detention... you like that I'm speaking in a rude manner don't you? It makes you feel ordinary. Like a human." He finished. What on earth... with a flick of his wrist the door was shut tight, and the curtains of the windows had closed.
"Who are you?" I took steps back from him.
"Relax. I'm not here to hurt you. Instead, I heard your wish, so here I am to fulfil it. You know, the one you oh so desperately wished last night at your fathers funeral? What, you don't remember? Come here, let me, remind you." His long legs took 2 large steps, already 2cm away from me. He once again tucked a piece of my hair behind my ear.
- I would just like to, feel.
"Remember now?" He smiled.
"What bullshit. I wouldn't call that a wish, there was no 'I wish' in that sentence. So what are you playing at?" I asked, there was no denying this guy was suspicious. He could be one of them, I can't just believe anything people utter, if that was the case I would've been dead long ago.
"You know, you really sound like you don't want that wish fulfilled. Your thoughts sounded so, so, pathetic. I just had to come. Call me a guardian angel if you must, I'll protect you, since feeling safe is an emotion too." He clicked his fingers and suddenly a halo was floating above his head.
"I don't need protecting," I flew my middle finger up at him before grabbing my bag.
"Kids are you still in there? I can't get this door open." The teachers voice was heard, it was about time she returned, just as I was about to reach for the door handle, Taehyung appeared in front of me. "Yes Mrs Lim, we were just leaving," he said, sticking his tongue out, exiting before me. This childish piece of shit cannot- no, I refuse to believe he's my 'guardian angel.'
I walked home, the weather was a lot more calm today. I took the longer way past the lake, I really wanted to avoid going home, I knew memories of dad would flush in, numbing me inside out.
"HELP," I looked to my left to see a little girl drowning in the lake, it was quite deep, the sign of warning had probably been broken off by some hooligans. I raised an eyebrow, looking into the girls eyes.
"Aren't you going to save her?"
A deep voice called out, leaning against the tree was none other that so called angel. "Why should I? She's the one who was dumb enough to fall in," I shrugged taking a few steps forward.
"You really are a monster," he shook his head, taking off his blazer before jumping in to help the child. I scoffed as I leaned against the same tree he was at a second ago. I squinted ever so slightly, analysing the boy as he came out the water empty handed.
"Aw, what happened?" I sarcastically asked. He ignored me, as he tried to dry his hair with his jumper. "She disappeared," he sighed.
"Yeah no shit sherlock, that's because she wasn't there to attract your attention. She was bait for me. As a guardian angel isn't this the basic knowledge you should have?" I rolled my eyes.
The girl was planted there so I would go to save her, and then something terrible would happen. I don't know what, since I've always avoided these traps. But my father warned me that the day I find out who sets these traps, and find out what will happen if I fall for them, it will be the day I will need the most strength ever.
"You're quite impressive." He sighed, I could read that he was regretting his decision of jumping into the lake. Since it only proved his unworthiness to be a guardian angel. "And you're quite suspicious. That was such a basic trap, how will you protect me if you can barely protect yourself? What if that trap accidentally swallowed you in before realising that it wasn't me? You would've died for nothing," I sighed.
"Careful Jackson, if I didn't know better, I'd say you were worried about me right now." He chuckled, staring at me while he flicked his wet hair onto my face, leaving sprinkles of the water on my cheek.
"Did you forget I can't feel? I can barely fake a smile and what? You think I worry for you? Dream on Kim," I said, walking off. Out of pure curiosity I turned around to see if he would follow me, but like magic, he vanished. His energy is magical, so I know he's like me... but I can't tell if his energy is positive or negative. If he's going to protect me, or if he's going to help them hurt me.
Remembering I had to be the one to buy groceries and stuff, I changed my direction to head to the mart. Since it was winter, darkness fell faster than usual, making it practically pitch black by the time I was done shopping.
"Those bags look heavy, should we help you carry them." A group of men stumbled their way towards me. They reek of alcohol. Filthy humans. I tried my best to avoid any contact with them, their indecent intentions could be spotted from miles away. "Oye. Young lady, didn't your mum teach you to listen when elders talk to you?" One of them said, grabbing my wrist.
"Not really, the bitch didn't exactly teach me anything," I shrugged, yanking his hand away from mine. "Fiesty. Just how I like them." They surrounded me, making me sigh. I cracked my neck, placing the bags onto the floor.
"Ugly. Just how they look after I'm done with them." I uttered, before starting the fight. They were easy, they could barely stand up straight, let alone fight someone like me. I brushed off the dust on my hands before bending down to pick up the bags.
"Jewel..."
Dad? That's definitely his voice... I looked towards the the direction the sound was coming from. It was a large ivy tree. It had only been a day since his passing yet I already yearned to hear his voice again. "Jewel baby I miss you,"
I feel nauseous, hearing his voice hurts. It's attracting me towards it, even though I know. I know it's a trap, I still want to go there. They're coming at me when I'm most vulnerable and honestly it's working. Unknowingly my feet start moving, I'm no longer in control of my own body. The eagerness of my cold heart wanting to catch a single glimpse of my dad again, could not be beaten. "Dad..." I called out for him, almost, just almost reaching the tree.
"Don't."
I was twirled around ever so swiftly into someones embrace.
"You have to resist the evil, otherwise it'll consume you."
