Is This Really School?

I sat in the second last row, in front of Nicole. Somehow, she sat in the last row with Cheryl, Jacob, Edward, Harry Styles, Draco and the newly buffed Aydan.

I wondered how seven people sat in the last row which, in the beginning of the class, had had only 5 seats. I looked back again and realised that Jacob and Aydan were stuck licking themselves, rolling on the floor.

Oh, my poor brother.

Rosewater Sunflower Applesauce Autumnwinters sat on the seat beside mine. Our history teacher, Mr. Notworthtime droned on about the First World War.

I peeked into Rosewater's notebook, since she couldn't possibly be writing everything that Mr. Notworthtime said. I noticed different heart shaped figures with her name in them. Each heart shaped figure carried a different name along with hers. One said, Edward, another said Jacob, and the third one said Aydan.

Had she even talked to Aydan, yet?

From the corner of my eye, I saw Draco draw another heart with his name, with the help of his magic wand. Rosewater didn't notice until he was done. Once she did, she stared at it and looked around, and then face palmed herself, blushing.

I could hear her talk to herself, "I must've written it, of course! Who else could?"

I raised my eyebrows at her reasoning, but before I could say anything, I noticed questions she had scribbled at the bottom of her notebook.

How is Edward so strong that he managed to carry both my backpack and his own?

What does the tail sticking behind Jacob mean? Is it some sort of a good luck charm?

How is Draco's notebook full of notes on the first day of class?

I had to hand it to Rosewater. She really was using her braincells to their full capacity. I wondered how long it would take for her to figure out those answers.

That is when a brilliant idea flashed through my mind. I could help her! Then we would become friends instead, and all this unnecessary drama would go away.

"I could answer all those questions for you," I offered, tapping her desk with my pen.

She recoiled so fast that I was left to wonder if she had been practicing tongue dodging exercises with Nicole. She had kept a seminar last year to avoid those accidental deaths.

"I get it!" She hissed back (making me even more suspicious about her involvement with Nicole and her habits), "You've been here for a long time! Probably slept your way through the entire class! Just stay away from me!"

Huh?

I barely restrained myself from commenting 'How did you know?' since that would probably not work in my favour if I wanted her to be my friend.

Could I just pass the opportunity of not being her friend and just maintaining my distance, you ask? I had tried that, too, in 2018. That had been one weird year. Every time I had tried to run away from a situation involving the then-her: Opium Springball Merry Christmas, I had somehow been dragged deeper. That girl was obsessed with running an enemies-to-lovers plot line with me. Every time I turned her down, she would make it all about some agony and trauma of my past life keeping me away from her and confusing her because I still replied to things she said directly to me. Aydan had been her best friend that year, running his own side plot with Fred Weasley.

My life was so bizarre.

"Miss Autumwinters?" Mr. Notworthtime called out, "Do you have something to share with the class?"

Rosewater glared at me, like I was responsible for her loud, annoying, shrieking voice.

But before she had a chance to reply to Mr. Notworthtime, Edward got up from his seat behind her, "Mr. Notworthtime you will forget everything and move on!" His compelling skill made the teacher turn and go back to teaching the class like nothing had happened.

Rosewater stared at Edward, her mouth agape and I could feel the jealously rising from every direction of the class. From the first row Peter Parker shot a web at Edward, who dodged it and smirked.

Rosewater turned back to her notebook and started scribbling furiously next to the question about Edward. Was the dim-witted, weather-report-in-her-name idiot finally realising the truth?

Is Edward rich? Maybe the son of a board member? That's why Mr. Notworthtime listened to him!

It was just as much as I had anticipated.

The class got over soon after that, since Mr. Notworthtime did nothing else worth anyone's time. Rosewater flipped her notebook close and stuffed it in her back. The girl sitting in front of her turned behind, her dreads flipping away. Her upturned eyes smartly analysed Rosewater, like she was a math equation just waiting to be solved.

"Hey, I'm Amari Linh Ho Chi Minh Jabari. I'm half African-American and half Vietnamese. I can help with your homework, let's be friends!"

Rosewater instantly agreed, and I sighed. I had offered to help as well, but she had thrown a tantrum at that proposal.

With Amari Linh Ho Chi Minh Jabari, the diversity index doubled, and I knew instantly that she was going to be her only friend. Rosewater had made two friends in one.

Rosewater and Amari began talking about our classmates loudly enough for anyone to hear.

"Edward is just so rich and mysterious-"

"Jacob just looks so hot-"

"Draco is just so rich and smart-"

"Loki is low-key so hot-"

"Aydan is just so rich and...He's so rich!"

And then they squealed and giggled.

What the fuck?

Thankfully (for my mental health, at the very least), they were interrupted by Jackson Wang, who sauntered towards them purposefully.

"Hey, girls!" He raised his eyebrows at them, winking at Amari. She rolled her eyes, pretending not to care, but a slight blush crept up her cheeks.

"I'm having a party at my place, tonight," he added. He was hosting a party on the first night of school. The entire school collectively had one braincell they shared amongst themselves all the time, and some people didn't ever win the fight for its control.

Rosewater chewed on her lip; 'unknowingly' making a seductive and suggestive gesture, and the boy standing diagonally opposite to her passed out. She sighed, "I don't know. We've barely moved in, I don't think I could find the right clothes..."

Amari jumped in, "I could lend you some!" When Jackson and Rosewater stared at her, she shrugged but her blush deepened, "I mean, if you want to go, that is."

"Fantastic!"

Yeah, fantastic.
