Chapter 58
Well, the show didn't go horribly for the first act. It was definitely rough. Kasey had to bolt around a lot. She was constantly changing into her Angelica costume or out of her Angelica costume. It felt like the songs lasted less than a second before Kasey was going back to do something else.
It was soothing to stand next to Carleigh for all of the Angelica songs, at least.
Kasey's saving grace turned out to be Lac.
Lac would remind Kasey mid-song about what was going to happen next. She didn't have time to look back on any mistakes that she had during a song. She just had to move on and think about the next quick-change that she was going to have to do.
Seth was in the same boat. Kasey felt like a rabbit, darting along onstage. She felt like there was nothing she was actually prepared for. It was more like 'get from one thing to another' instead of 'sing right'.
She got through the first couple songs, and then got to 'Schuyler Sisters'.
She decided to just ditch the accent. Her brain was fried from trying to ensemble dance and then completely change her mindset to Angelica.
Carleigh looked a little surprised, but then smiled.
'Schuyler Sisters' was fun, but then Kasey had to dash off to change back into her ensemble costume again.
It felt like she was barely in her costume when she had to run back offstage to change back into Angelica's costume.
The insanity was extremely real.
Everything else went well, though. She didn't flunk 'Satisfied', but she heard herself singing and could swear that there was a little bit of an American accent slipping into her now-British Angelica.
Old habits die hard, Kasey thought. She'd sung all of the songs in an American accent for over a year. She was more used to it than in a British accent. The end result was Kasey's mangled accent, with a mix of both.

She was extremely relieved when the show finally ended. During 'Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story', she could finally take a breath for the first time that night. It had been intense.
The ensemble dressing room, even though a lot of people were missing, still had a lot of energy.
"You were amazing," Carleigh said, hugging Kasey. "I was so proud. You did such an amazing job."
"Thanks," Kasey laughed. "I feel like I could sleep for ages, honestly."
"You deserve it. That was a fantastic performance," Stephanie agreed. "I was shocked at how well you handled that. It looked crazy."
"Hey, guys, Laura Osnes is here!" Leslie said, popping his head in the door.
"Hey!" Laura exclaimed.
"Hey, Laura!" the girls chimed.
"You guys were all amazing. I was so impressed that you guys pulled it off with so many people out sick. Hats off to all of you," Laura said. "I loved every single one of you. Congratulations on a performance well done!"
"Thanks," Kasey said.
"It's a great show. Good luck in the future! I can't stick around, I have to get home to my dog," Laura said. "I hope we see each other again."
"Bye, Laura," Carleigh said, waving as Laura and Leslie left.
Carleigh and Kasey quickly got changed and said goodbye to their friends. They started walking down the street toward the loft.
"You know, you should really talk to Jace more," Carleigh mused. Kasey turned her head to look at her friend.
"I've spoken to him a lot, Carleigh," she protested.
"You can't just keep putting this off, Kasey. He likes you. I can tell," Carleigh scolded.
"Carleigh, what-"
"Kasey. Why do you think he takes to see shows, and comes to watch Hamilton, texts you, and goes out to coffee with you all the time? Friends don't do that," Carleigh said.
"You go out to coffee with me," Kasey shot back.
"We're girls."
"So?"
"Come on, you know he likes you. And deep down, I think you like him."
"As friends, Carleigh."
"Fine," Carleigh rolled her eyes. "Just carry on pretending you both don't like each other. Soon enough, one of you is going to go on tour and your dear little hearts are going to be broken. Then it'll be too late."
Kasey rolled her eyes back at Carleigh.
"I'll ask Jace about it whenever you get a boyfriend," she countered.
"Come on, Kasey," Carleigh groaned, reaching out to punch Kasey on the shoulder. Kasey darted away, smirking.
"Your loss," Kasey laughed. "That way it's your fault when we're both eighty years old and single."
