Fright Night

-Thank you to @storm-of-imagination for helping me develope this idea-

It was saturday night at the mountain, and Dick was sitting, cross-legged, on the floor, playing with Wolf. Wolf, for his part, thought the boy was *some sort*  of puppy, and wrestled with him pretty violently.

"WOLF. Here boy!" Conner ordered, not wanting Robin to get crushed by the beast.

"No, no, it's fine!" his teammate giggled, face soaked in slobber. "Gross!" He squealed, being slammed to the floor again. "Good boy!" He tried to shove the dog off him, but wolf was about three times his weight.

Across the room, Artemis was going at it with a gluestick and some cardstock. She pulled ANOTHER dog hair off the glue.

"Ugh, His fur gets EVERYWHERE!"

"He's shedding." Conner pulled his dog off the giggling mass that was Robin and settled back down.

"He's also a wild.fucking.wolf." Artemis pointed out.

Conner tended to get defensive over his dog. "He's not wild he's just..."

"A wolf, Conner. A WOLF" She repeated. "And a fucking huge one."

"What're you doing?" Wally asked, stepping around her.

"I'm making True crime trading cards."

Wally paused a second. "Do you have a Tumblr, perhaps?"

She rolled her eyes. "NO, they're just for fun. Hey, what do you think?" She held up a card with some spooky stock photo she put in  black-and-white, with the words: 'Chicago Poisoned Tylonol killer'.

"It's... uh... good." Wally responded hesitantly.

Clearly not the reaction she wanted. "Whatever, fuck you."

"That's two bucks for the swear jar now." Robin hauled himself to the kitchen sink to clean off and regain his composure.

"Well, I only have a five dollar bill. So, Fuck you too."

"That's still only three." Wally pointed out.

"Whatever, I'll take a rain check on the last two. Hey, Ms. M, are you ready?"

"I guess." M'gann shrugged as she entered the room. She didn't expect to like this. "Isn't real life scary enough for you?"

Robin rinsed the side of his face. "Pretending that there's some masked killer out to find me distracts me from the fact that there are a hundred masked killers out to find me."

"Yeah," Wally agreed. "This stuff is WAY less scary than real life."

"And if Unsolved Mysteries creeps you out, We'll put on Buzzfeed Unsolved for comedic purposes!"

"Yep, several seasons of Unsolved Mysteries, The Mentalist, TONS of popcorn and snacks, AND..." The redhead built up the suspense. "The league isn't around!"

"Heck YEAH!" Dick cheered. "We can stay up late!"

"I'll set up the tv!"

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The boys' bravery hadn't lasted far into the night.

It was about Nine, and they were piled up on the couch. Wally clutched Dick with one arm, and Sour Patch Kids in the other. M'gann had her legs kicked across Conner's lap, and Artemis was half-crushed under Dick and Wally. Kaldur, being responsible, kept to the side with a level mind.

They eventually switched to Buzzfeed unsolved and it ended up being WAY scarier.

"We should go to bed." It was Kaldur's way of saying: 'you should go to bed'. "Incase the League requires us tomorrow."

"Yeah..." M'gann agreed. "At the end of the episode, though..."

Eventually, the episode ended, and Kaldur convinced (Forced) them to get ready for bed. They turned on every light to the bathroms and bedrooms.

"Doesn't Robert Stack have a sultery gaze?" Artemis joked around as a defense mechanism.

"Think before you think- I mean speak!" Wally choked, brushing his teeth.

"'Think before you think' -Wally West, 2020." She laughed while flossing. The Girls' and Boys' changerooms were practically across from each other, so they maintained a pretty smooth conversation.

"I still remember what Artemis said, and you're both crazy!" Dick pried at the lid of his pill bottle. "Wally?" He asked meekly, holding up the pill bottle.

"Oh, here." He uncapped the bottle back and the boy took it, sipping water and swallowing two pills.

"What're those?" M'gann asked.

"Just sleeping pills." He shrugged. They helped control his nightmares, but he didn't need to share that part.

"Kay, well... I'm ready!" She could tell he was witholding information, but wasn't going to bother him about his medical history. "How about we hang out in my room for a bit? Like, before we seperate?"

"Okay!" Wally agreed; her room was nice, like something from ICarly.

"Artemis, you can stay in my room for the night if you want..."

"Oh, you don't have to-"

"You can use my Hanna Montanna pillow."

"You know what? okay." The blonde agreed.

They didn't mean to fall asleep in her room, but it just happened. Robin's pills kicked in, and thenWally fell asleep on top of him... and then Artemis, and M'gann, and even Conner. And it's not like Kaldur could move them all... so he placed blankets over them and settled by the door protectively.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wally jerked awake, blinking around the dark room. "What's...What?"

"You hear that?" M'gann whispered.

"Thunder." Conner stated, startling the two, who didn't know he was awake.

"Who else is awake?" The redhead asked.

"Me." The martian whispered.

"Me too." Conner confirmed. "Anyone else?"

"I'm awake." Kaldure said. "Artemis? Robin?"

Artemis stirred a little, kicking Wally Under the blanket.

"Arty?" He asked."

"MmmWHAT?" She moaned.

"Did you hear the thunder?"

"Yeah, shut up!" She sat up, rubbing her eyes.

The nightlight flickered into life, startling them. Artemis leaned on a lump in the Blanket, waking him up.

"There must have ben a stall in the electricty." Wally tried to reason, even tough they'd all independantly thought it was ghosts. "Rob, you good?"

"Who? ...yeah." Dick strggled to sit up. "Where are my glasses?"

Wally felt around in the blankets and found them, he placed them in Dick's hands and guided him to put them on. "Better?"

"Okay, well, now I can't see at all." He yawned, stretching. "What time?"

M'gann looked at her bedside lamp, But it had restarted when the nightlight come back on. "I don't know, this just says 12:00. But, that doen't feel right."

"I think it's later." Conner reasoned. "Does anyone have their phones?"

"I do, but it's out of power." Wally replied.

They sat in silence for a bit, trying to go back to sleep, but the idea of lingering spirits and crazed murders was planted in their minds. Minutes ticked by, they stared across at each other in dead silence. The air was devoid of the backgroud sounds they didn't realized they were used to; ticking clocks, beeping machinery, the radio that M'gann liked to leave on in the kitchen...

"I have to piss." Artemis finally relented.

"Same." Wally nodded curtly. Neither suggested getting up.

"When you go, can you grab my phone from the counter?" Robin asked, worried he might need it.

"Get it yourself." She said. "Unless you're... y'know... scared or something."

Wally didn't know what to say; they were all 'scared or something'. "Let's just go together. For eficientcy."

"M'kay." Dick stumbled to his feet, tripping a little. He proceeded blindly through the room. He was relieved when Wally grabbed his and Artemis' hands, forming a chain.

"Guys, Here!" M'gann tossed something to Artemis, which she, remarkably, caught.

"Thanks. We'll be right back." Artemis closed the door after them, cutting the three off from their safe haven.

"Dude, don't say that. haven't you seen scream?" Wally warned, holding the trio together. "What's that?"

"I think it's a flashlight." With her free hand, Artemis messed around, until she successfully flicked the light on.

She lead the three, by the lights of a single, weak beam. Tiny Red and Green dots struck the windows of labs as they passed, echoes of the LED bulbs from whence they came. No one spoke. Their footfalls were like gunshots in the dead quiet hall.

Dick followed, blindly, clutching the otherboy's hand and praying he wouldn't trip on something.

"Kitchen first." Artemis hissed, breaking the silence. "We'll all go -incase Robin trips." She did not want them to be seperated.

They emerged into the wide room, every couch, table and counter was a hiding place, every discarded sweater a potential threat. A soft sound hit Dick's ears; breathing. Breathing that wasn't theirs.

He stopped in place, Causing the other two tobe yanked back.

"Rob, what-" Wally was stopped as he heard it too. He turned to Artemis, who was also frozen. They had the only light here, they emitted the only sounds, they were living targets.

The heavy, ragged breathing was followed by slow, deliberate footsteps. They were frozen, not sure where the steps came from. There was one thing for sure, there was someone else here, and they were getting closer.

There were severl sharp inhales, and a shape leapt from the darkness, pinning Robin against the floor.

All three screamed. High-pitched, horrified, screams.

A huge wet tongue made contact with Robin's face. He let out a terrified whine. There are some real sickos in Gotham, so it took a moment for things to click into place

Artemis swung the light at her friend, still clutching Wally's hand in fear. The massive, furry form jumped off the youngest, wagging its tail.

"Wolf." She felt a wave of relief lapping at her stomach, a chuckled escaping her lips.

"Dude, are you okay?" Wally helped him up.

"A little wet, but, Yeah." The boy was shaken. "Let's hit the bathroom and get out of here."

Artemis let go of Wolf's ear and grabbed the expenisve phone off the counter and passed to to the boy. "We're so jumpy." She shook her hair out and reformed their safety line. They snuck through the hall to the bathroom, feeling less frightened, and looking like the Scooby-Doo gang, or maybe a bunch of preschoolers on a field trip.

"What do we do now?" Wally asked when they got to the bathrooms. "Do we seperate?"

"Robin can stand guard out here while we go in?"

"No way! I can't see through these!"

"There's nothing in here, only a dumb dog." Artemis said. "But, test the lights."

They did. Niether of the batherooms had lights, and there was only one flashlight.

"What now?" Wally asked, still not keen on seperating.

"Fuck it." Artemis desided. "We're all going into the girl's bathroom."

So, they did, keeping the door closed, with Robuin leaning against it with the light.

"We good to go?" Wally asked.

"Yeah, it's just- it's just, I thought I heard some stuff outside..." Dick felt a little embarrassed saying it, because it was probably nothing.

"It's probably just Wolfie." Artemis took the light back and cautiously pushed the door open. Luckily, there was no serial killer standing outside.

The mountain was a maze, a silent maze. Well, an almost silent maze. Footsteps, whispers ricocheted off the walls.

Wally gripped their hands tighter. "...what was-"

"Nothing." Artemis tried to calm them down, though she was also scared. "Just echoes of us."

They crept towards where they thought the room was.

the footsteps were getting louder.

They weren't just echoes. Artemis tried to turn them back, but she realized, with sickening horror: she didn't know where they were.

The footsteps were getting louder.

She didn't know where they came from. The flashlight beam flashed off the walls as their pace hurried. They couldn't go too fast because of Dick, so they speed walked quietly as they could. She picked a direction and hurried down it, pulling the boys after her.

The footsteps were getting louder.

Artemis chose the wrong direction.

At this point, the footsteps were pounding in their brains. They ran, stumbling, if only they could make it back to M'gann's room. If only

Dick couldn't keep up, he tried to kick off the linoleum as he was dragged.

The flashlight slipped from Artemis' grip, the hesitated, fuck it. She kept running, blindly, through the dark. The footsteps were So close.

She ran into a wall, and the three fell to the floor. The footsteps had stopped, she hadn't run into a wall.

A feeble wimper escaped Wally's throat. "H-hello?"

A cold, blinding, light shot into the hall. Three men stood over them, eyes masked in shadow. Scowls afixed to their threatening, sharp faces.

"Wally West?" A voice came from the shortest of the three.

A thick quiet filled the air.

"Tim?" Dick croaked, clinging blindly onto Wally's arm, near tears from fear.

"Birdie." One of the others practicaly shouted, making everyone jump. He hurried forwards.

"STOP!" Artemis screeched, kicking her leg up.

"Chill out," He sounded way too casual about this. "We're here for Robin."

"What?" She gasped. "What do you- NO!"

The third figure, the one with the flashlight stepped forwards. The other one seemed more rabid, but this one... this one radiated a sort of frusterated malice. He spoke. "You frightened them."

"Who are you!" Artemis nearly sobbed.

"Don't worry," The least threatening one spoke up. "Robin knows us."

"Rob?" She didn't take her eyes off them.

"Yea-yeah, I know them." Dick finally gasped for air. "What's happening, why are you here?"

"There's a storm in the harbor, the mountain was taken offline." The shortest replied. "We were worried."

"I don't know who you are..." The blonde tried to regain her composure. "But you scared the SHIT OUT OF US!"

"The computer didn't announce your arrival." Wally added.

"Well we tried to call..."

"We didn't have our phones." Dick squeaked, still shaking.

"Birdie, don't be scared, it's US." The other one leaned forwards as if to pick himsup off the floor. Artemis scrambled back, trying to block his way. These guy's eyes weren't masked by darkness, but by actual masks. Robin couldn't even see them.

"WHO ARE YOU!" She hoped the yelling would allert the others.

"Oh, well, I'm Red Robin..." The shortest said. "These are Red Hood and Renagade. The league called us in to check up on you guys."

"It's okay, Arty, they're... co-workers..."

The one intruder stepped over her and helped the youngest up. Dick was still clinging onto Wally. "C'mon birdie, it's way too late for you to be up."

"Da- Batman said I could stay thte night." He replied.

"You're scared." The malice-filled one stated. "We're taking you back with us."

Dick was too tired to argue. Honestly, he didn't want to stay at the mountain.

Artemis, still not trusting the newcomers, helped the boys back to M'gann';s room to get Robin's things. It was hard explaining why he had to leave, but it was harder trying to justify how scared he'd been to Jason.

"So, did you guys OD on sugar before bed?" His brother taunted, pulling him through the cave.

"Nothing. There were just, intruders in out blacked-out HQ." The boy was still shaking, clutching his night bag in his arms, and wearing his pyjamas.

"Well, it's pretty late." Tim took off his brother's glasses so he could see again. "I'd head to bed if I were you."

"O-Okay." Dick leaned in closer so the other two couldn't hear. "Walk me upstairs?"

"Oh," Tim looked around, ensuring  the others hadn't heard, this was exactly the kind of thing Jason teased his little brother for. Luckily, they didn't seem to hear. Tim put his hand on Dick's shoulder, steering him towards the door. "Okay, Let's go."

Dick nodded feebly, sleep pulling at his eyelids once more. "Thanks."
