Chapter Ten
Garfield Logan was a lot taller then she remembered, she also remembered his hair not being green. Then again Mar'i had only seen him a few times throughout her life and the last time was when she was quite young. The guest house was further than the barn but still accessible to the main house. Its exterior mirrored the main house but inside had a more modern touch to it compared to the rustic feel the main house gave off. Megan's brother was sitting on the sofa eating a sandwich with a pair of legs draped over his lap.
Her aunt cleared her voice to get his attention; the young man was too busy staring off into space to notice the three of them. Mar'i's eyes followed the long pale legs up to the young woman lounging next to him, her face stuck in a book. She lowered the book to reveal her thin, pale face and short dark hair covering most of her face. "Hey sis, whatcha want?" Garfield asked with a mouthful of food.
He reminded Mar'i an awful lot of her younger brother Jaxx. She watched as his girlfriend sat up and swatted him in the back of the head. The couple seemed to remind her of her aunt Artemis and Uncle Wally – her aunt was constantly swatting her husband in the back of the head when he did something disgusting. "You have guests, idiot." The woman muttered before leaning back into the sofa and picking up her book again.
The encounter was friendly as he got up and greeted the two young women standing next to his sister. He stuck his hand out towards Mar'i and flashed a gleeful smile, "Garfield Logan, I think I've met you before but weren't you like smaller?" he asked as she nodded and shook his hand.
"Dude I am so old." He muttered.
After the friendly introductions, her aunt led them up the nearby staircase and into the first bedroom on the right. Sindella winced when she saw the colour the walls were painted – bright yellow, almost fluorescent. There were two single beds on either side of the room; the teenager childishly ran over and claimed the bed next to the set of windows. As she jumped onto the bed and admired the view her older sister turned to their aunt. "Is something wrong? You didn't arrive with much baggage. Are you in trouble?" Megan whispered.
She only wished the best for her technical nieces. Megan was the aunt Mar'i felt she could tell anything to, she was very understanding and soft-spoken. "No trouble. This trip was planned at an odd time and well we just wanted to see you. Isn't that right Sindi!" she said loudly. Her sister turned and nodded furiously with a forced smile. If it weren't for the vigorous head shaking their aunt might have seen how forced her smile truly was.
Their aunt smiled kindly at the two young women. It was always lovely to see them; Mar'i was always difficult to speak with because of her travels. The model turned and then strutted over to the small bed pushed up against the bright yellow wall. With the sun shining inside of the bedroom the walls were surely blinding to look at. "Hello Megan!" her aunt tapped the side of her head lightly with her hand, "- I'll be right back." She said before disappearing from the room.
Mar'i sat down on the edge of the bed facing her sister who was across the room from her. For a moment she felt like she was back at boarding school again with the way the room was set up. It was so bare and bright and oddly nostalgic. She hadn't been in a room that resembled the one she used to stay in when attending boarding school so this all felt somewhat familiar. "You realize mum and dad are going to ground you until you're twenty, right?" she asked.
Her sister turned and sat down properly on her bed to face her. "It's okay; I'll say you kidnapped me or something." Sindella joked. Before Mar'i could retaliate their aunt arrived back and pushed that mysterious woman from earlier into the room. They locked eyes for a split second; just looking at her gave her the slight chills. Leo used to give her the same feeling when they were younger. "Raven would be happy to let you borrow some of her clothes while the two of you are here." Megan smiled, elbowing the dark-haired woman standing slouched next to her.
Raven rolled her eyes and folded her arms across her chest. "Whatever." She responded in a monotone voice. Mar'i had never seen such a bland human being in her entire life. The woman's pale skin and dark hair made her seem like she was a character from an old black and white film. There was absolutely no colour to her, her clothes were dark as well. Garfield and she seemed to be exact opposites when it came to personal style and their personalities. He was definitely livelier than she was.
After that semi-awkward encounter, her aunt left and headed back to the main house to get some work done. The guest house was deadly silent and the both of them feared to make any loud noise to disturb the peace. "Well, you should probably go put your plan in motion and seduce the poor guy." Her sister said flatly. Mar'i turned her head, her jaw dropping and the look on her face was clearly horrified.
"I am not seducing him! Where did you get that idea?" she whispered trying her best not to yell.
"I don't know, one time mom called you a seductress." Sindella shrugged.
The young woman groaned and dragged her hands down the front of her face. Why did her parents have to ruin her credibility like that? The last thing she was is a seductress. Just then there was a knock at the doorway. The two of them jumped, hoping that Raven hadn't heard anything they were talking about. There was a pile of dark clothes in her arms that she dropped on the floor in the middle of the room before leaving. Both of them got the chills once she left the room, she seemed to leave that effect on people.
It was later in the afternoon towards the evening when she approached the old red barn. She reached out and ran her fingers along the cracked faded red paint and aging wood. The building looks as if it had been sitting here for over a decade. She walked along the perimeter and to the large barn doors. As the days grew colder the days would get shorter, therefore, the sky beginning to darken quicker than usual. Inside Garfield was seated on a bale of hay drinking from a metal bottle.
He and her uncle Connor had been working strenuously for more than a few hours. They were taking a brief break before they were all called to dinner at the main house. Mar'i looked back, the large white house glowing in the distance from all of the lights being on. Her sister went and joined their aunt after getting dressed in the new clothes they received earlier. Garfield's girlfriend – Raven was shorter than her and more petite, her clothes were a little too tight for her liking.
Nonetheless, it was either her dark clothes or putting on one of her aunt's arrangement of pastel dresses. There was a chill she couldn't quite shake as she hovered by the large doors watching him sharply. "Can I help you?" he asked, his voice startling her. Mar'i could feel her heart thrumming in her chest from the sudden realization that he knew she was watching her watch him. "Sorry I just wasn't sure how I should approach you." She apologized, brushing stray hairs behind her ear and returning her gaze to the ground.
All of the sudden the dirt seemed to be a lot more interesting than their upcoming conversation. "Hey I know that shirt, I got it for Rae when I was in Gotham!" he exclaimed pointing to the tight fitting long sleeved graphic shirt. He seemed quite happy about it. Mar'i could see that his girlfriend didn't like it considering the tag was still on it when she was given the shirt, she wouldn't let him in on those few details. "Anyways, I was wondering if we could talk?" she asked looking back up to meet his gaze.
The green haired man smiled and patted the piece of hay bale next to him. She entered the barn, the few lights hanging above flickering as she quickly made her way to take a seat next to him. "Your Dick's kid right?" he asked before snickering at her father's name. Many people, including her uncle Wally, thought her father's name was the funniest damn thing in the world. She nodded and flashed a small smile. "Sick." He responded.
"So, I heard you were friends with the CEO of Wayne Enterprises?" she brought up casually.
His face which was full of smiles immediately fell into a frown. Garfield crossed his arms and narrowed his eyes at her. "Not cool dude, not cool." He said giving her a disapproving look. He went to get up and leave and Mar'i panicked grabbing his wrist and pulling him back down onto the hay bale. "Please, I'm begging you, please. Recently some new things in my life have come to light and he's the only one who can answer my questions. I just need help getting into seeing him." She pleaded batting her eyes at him.
There was a long silence, his eyebrows knit together and he stared off into space while deep in thought. Mar'i didn't realize she was still holding his wrist and quickly pulled her hand away. She was never one for begging but meeting the Wayne Enterprises CEO was difficult, he did not just let anyone into his office to ask questions. "Please, this is really important to me." She whispered.
He drew out a long sigh, "Fine." He dragged out.
The young woman hopped up from the hay bale and began jumping up and down ecstatic. There were so many questions she wanted – needed to ask and now she could finally get the answers. Wayne Enterprises held a lot of information, especially on her boyfriend who was quite private with his work. If her parents refused to tell her what happened between the Huxley's and Wayne's then she was going to find out from another source. "Thank you, thank you, thank you!" she yelled. In all the excitement she leaned over and pecked his cheek sweetly.
A deep shade of red dusted his cheeks and the tip of his nose once she pulled away. Garfield laughed nervously and rubbed the back of his neck. "Again, thank you so much." She thanked before heading out of the barn and towards the main house.
Everyone was inside and the house had become livelier since the last time she was in here a mere few hours ago. The kitchen was bustling, her aunt and uncle finishing off cooking the food and all of the kids running and weaving through the furniture and in and out of every room. In the mess she managed to find her sister, grabbing her by her arm and pulling her back before she could run away. "From the grin on your face I take it he said yes. Did you bore him to death or did you use your seductress charm." Her sister teased.
Mar'i rolled her eyes and led the teenager to the nearby washroom. With the door shut it instantly became quieter, enough for Sindella to hear her properly. "Anyways he did say yes. We're going to meet with the CEO of Wayne Enterprises!" she squealed trying not to jump and down. Sindella sighed and gave her thumbs up.
"Well, I guess I'm proud of you or whatever." Sindella muttered.
"Thanks, Sindi, and again I'm really sorry for what I said the other day it was-"
"- just drop it okay?" her sister interrupted before brushing past her and exiting the washroom.
