Chapter Nineteen
"It looks fine as far as stab wounds go. I'm also not a doctor, just reminding you in case you would want to go and see one." She said bandaging her friend's side back up.
Damian shook his head and stayed quiet, eyes focused on something in the distance. She was back at his apartment again, stopping by to redress the injury for him. There was no way in hell she was going to let him do it himself. "I could have done this myself." He says stubbornly. Mar'i stopped by on her way to meeting Leonardo for dinner. Earlier she had received a text from an unknown number. Leonardo said it was him and that he was using his father's phone since his's battery died.
UNKNOWN: Mar'i darling, I'm staying late. Meet me at that little café down the street that you love? My treat.
M. Grayson: Who is this?
UNKNOWN: It's Leo, phone died, using my fathers. So, dinner?
M. Grayson: Yeah sure, give me thirty minutes I'm in the middle of running an errand.
UNKNOWN: I'll be waiting.
She received those texts twenty minutes ago. Damian, unfortunately, was her first priority due to the hack job of a fixed injury she did for him. Once again, a few minutes ago, she had to sit on him to keep him from wriggling around. Cleaning the wound was the worst part. Damian said that it felt like a mixture of being burned and stabbed all over again. "You look awfully dressed up for coming over to redress a wound." He noted as she re-bandaged his wound.
"I'm meeting Leo for dinner after this. We're eating at the café down the street from our place. It's my favourite." She gushed.
The young man gave her a weak smile; he was still in quite some pain. Of course, he wouldn't tell her that it would only worry her. Damian Wayne did not need nor want anyone's help. Mar'i was just as stubborn as he was and refused to take no for an answer. She finished patching him up and checked the time on her watch. "Damn, I should have been there five minutes ago." She says aloud, tearing her eyes away from the watch and climbing off of him.
Leonardo was probably sitting and waiting for her alone in the café. As she cleaned up she couldn't help but notice how painfully still Damian was sitting on the couch. He should have been moving around by now. "You should really go see a doctor Damian." She said, reminding him yet again of his poor choices. This wasn't a simple paper cut that she could fix with a bandage; this was a stab wound which needed to be treated by professionals.
He waved her comment off with his hand as if it were nothing. A sigh escaped her lips as she ran a hand down the side of her face, "You're infuriating." She grumbled.
"I seem to have that effect on people." He smiled.
Mar'i opened her mouth to say something back, a snide remark no less, when her phone began to ring. The young woman turned her head and looked back at her purse that she set down on the small table by the front door. Quickly she walked over and dug out her cell phone from the very bottom of the purple bag. Leonardo's face was glued to the screen of her phone as it continued to ring.
She turned and brought her index finger to her lips signaling for Damian to stay quiet while she spoke to her fiancé. If he knew she was here he would have her head on a pike. Leo absolutely despised Damian Wayne with every fiber of his being. Maybe if her fiancé was a psycho killer the youngest Wayne in front of her might have been dead already. She snickered at the silly thought and shook her head answering the phone call. "Hello!" she chimed sweetly.
There was quite some noise in the background. The café must be busy tonight or Leonardo was waiting outside for her to arrive. "Is everything alright darling? You seem to be running well what – fifteen minutes late now." He noted.
"Yeah, I was drinking something before I left and spilled it all over myself, had to clean. I'm on my way there now." She said, thinking up a quick lie.
Her gaze drifted back to Damian who gave her a smug smirk. Clearly, he was impressed with her ability to lie on the spot. Mar'i had acquired that skill a very long time ago. Sometimes when her parents would call her while she was at boarding school and would ask where she was well she tended to not be in the places she was supposed to be. Lying became a hobby of hers in her teenage years.
Of course, there was the typical lying to a teacher about why she did not complete a certain assignment but then there was the type of lying where she had to make an excuse as to why she was roaming the halls so late at night when in reality she just arrived back from a night on the town with Antonia and Colette. "Alright, I was afraid you had ditched me for another dashing lad." She could practically hear him smirking through the phone line.
With a roll of her eyes and a giggle, she said her goodbye and hung up the phone. Damian stood up, wincing when his body twisted a certain way, and slowly walked over to her. "You seriously look like hell Damian." She said resting her hand on his shoulder. The young man was still paler than usual, dark rings around his eyes, and pain behind his eyes. There was only so much he could hide from her. "What is the appeal of British men? If I had a silly accent of yours would I get more women?" he joked.
Mar'i punched him playfully on the shoulder. "My accent is not funny. It is a result of living in England for more than ten years now," she crossed her arms and looked down at her feet pouting.
"Plus, you wouldn't need a silly accent to capture someone's heart." She added.
His emerald eyes glazed over with something, admiration – perhaps even longing? That quickly disappeared as soon as she raised her head back up to look him in the eye. "I should really get going; he's probably going to kill me for being so late already." She laughed, taking a step back from him. Mar'i turned around and before she could open the door he reached out and grabbed her hand spinning her back around to him. "Be safe." He said with a sigh.
"I don't know why you do that, he's my fiancé, Damian, he isn't going to do anything to me." She hissed, pulling her hand away and turning to open the door.
There was something that bothered her about everyone and now she knew it. They always tried to warn her about Leo. It was pointless; she's known him far longer than her family or even Damian for that matter. They didn't need to worry about her; she already knew what she was getting into. She was standing in the doorway getting ready to shut it behind her when she halted. "I'm sorry. I've just had so many people say the same thing. They're wrong you know, he isn't a bad guy." She said before shutting the door behind her and leaving.
Leonardo was in the café waiting for her when she arrived. He was on his phone typing something, most likely an email to pass the time. After all, she was now officially half an hour late for their date night. The brunet looked up from his phone when he heard the little bell on top of the entrance door chime. He put his phone down and stood up when he saw her. Mar'i looked stunning as usual.
The young woman strutted over as if she owned the place, confidence was key when it came to dates. He walked around the table and pulled out the chair for her and pushed it in once she sat down. Leo leaned down and pressed his lips against her cheek, lingering for a moment before pulling away. The waiter approached the table moments after he had reclaimed his seat at the table. "I see that the lovely woman you've been talking about has finally arrived." The waiter said with a smile.
Mar'i felt the heat rush to her cheeks and spread across her face. Was Leo really gushing about her to the waiter? She had never known him to do something like that before. They ordered and the waiter left to give it into the kitchen which just left the two of them. "I can't remember the last time we were on an actual date." She said in awe, eyes sparkling as she looked around the café. There were other people in here but not as many as what she heard when he called her earlier.
He reached forward and grabbed her hands, rubbing his thumbs in comforting circles on the backs of her hands. "Don't doubt that I do not love you Mar'i Grayson." He whispered. Her heart fluttered and she couldn't help but grin. At the moment she was just so overwhelmed with emotion. There was something that Leonardo did to her, caused a reaction that made her eyes light up every time. "I love you too Leo." She replied softly.
