Chapter Nine

They were awkwardly sitting next to one another late at night on a train heading for Smallville. It was pretty dead, the train, the only ones on here besides them were a tired accountant and a drunken guy passed out across the seats a few spaces in front of them. She called to tell her parents that Sindella was with her but they didn't answer. Instead, she left a brief message explaining where they were headed. It was dark out and the forest the train was racing through whizzed by them in dark green blurs.

She wanted answers and this was how she was going to get them. It was also nice to visit her aunt Megan; she was always kind to her. Her phone began to vibrate in her sweater pocket as she jolted awake. The clock on her cell phone said that it was past midnight and her boyfriend's face also caught her attention as it flashed on the screen. The train's bright white lights blinded her; she answered the phone whilst trying to rub the blurriness from her vision. "Where are you?" her boyfriend demanded.

Leonardo's tone sounded like he was more enraged than he was worried. Then again it was late and she had forgotten to tell him that she was off to Smallville, Kansas in search of answers. This was one of the weird adventures that she planned o taking at the last minute. There wasn't a lot she could lose now. Really, the only one in her corner was herself, her boyfriend (possibly), and her sister. "I'm on a train." She answered before yawning. She went to stretch her arm out when she felt a weight leaning against her.

Tiredly, she turned her head to the side to see her sister curled up on the stiff seat with her head leaning against her shoulder. Sindella was not a tiny human being but the way she was curled up made her seem so small and so childlike. She smiled fondly down at her and moved some stray hairs from her face behind her ear. "On a train, on a train to where?" he asked impatiently. It took a moment as she stared out the train window to remember where they were headed.

The memory popped into her head and if she weren't so tired and achy she would've perked up more. "Smallville, Kansas." She answered calmly. There was a silence that came over the phone line after she said that. In the background, she could hear a string of low toned curses from her boyfriend. After a minute he finally came back to the phone, she heard him take a deep breath. "Why the hell are you headed to Kansas? Are you mad?" he asked all the while trying to keep his cool.

He was surprisingly calm considering she just told him she decided to leave Gotham on some heat of the moment trip. The two girls didn't even bother packing they just headed to the nearest train station and Mar'i bought the tickets. The model had cash on her and if need be she would use Leonardo's credit card. Surely it wouldn't come to that but emergencies did happen. "Don't worry, I'll," she looked down at her sister, "- we'll be home in a day or so. I'm tired; I'll text you tomorrow morning. I love you." She yawned. For a brief moment and with heavy eyes she drearily waited for her boyfriend's response.

There was a long sigh that echoed in her ear from the phone line. She was far away and what was done was done, he couldn't exactly stop her now. "If you don't text me I'll bloody call my jet and fly out there myself to get you, understand?" he asked more light-heartedly. She smiled softly and imagined him pacing back and forth worried; he tended overreacted whenever she left without notice. "Yes, Leo." She whispered, another yawn escaping past her lips.

"I love you, goodnight." He responded before hanging up.

It wasn't hard for her to fall back asleep once she ended the phone call. The only problem was the wretched bright lights that irritated her. Mar'i shifted around in the uncomfortable seat and ended up burying her face into the top of her sister's head. At least most of the light was blocked out by her sisters raven locks up hair. She woke up once again to someone calling her name and tugging at her sweaters sleeve. The young woman groaned and reluctantly opened her irritated eyes.

Luckily once they first got on the train she took her eye contacts out. The sun was out and shining through the fingerprint-covered windows of the train. She noticed that the train was slowing to a stop at the approaching train stop. There were a few people waiting at the platform, most of them standing next to their large suitcases. Her attention turned to her sister who had a bad case of bed head and was tugging at her sleeve. "Finally, I've been trying to wake you up for like fifteen minutes now." The teenager sighed relieved and slouched back into her seat.

Mar'i stayed silent and raised her head looking around the train. Over the course of the night, the train had rolled into several different train stops along the way. The train was definitely more populated than the last time she surveyed the train car. "Do you know where we're going?" Sindella asked as they walked through the small station. They had gotten off of that uncomfortably seated train a few minutes ago. Mar'i just needed to figure out exactly where they were in Kansas and how to get to Smallville.

Her aunt and uncle lived on the Kent family farm. Apparently, Clark passed it down to Conner when he was old enough to take care of it himself. She had been there a few times when she was younger and was visiting her parents but most of her memories there were blurred together. The one memory that stood out from all the rest was the old rusty mailbox at the entrance of the property with the large wooden sign standing tall and proud next to it. It was strange thinking back to the trips her and her parents went on.

Now that she thought about it they didn't go on an awful lot. Mostly because her father was a police officer and her mother was busy with school. When she did come home, on rare occasion, for summer break or holidays they mostly stayed in Gotham. Her eyes grazed over the state map in front of them. "We're in Lawrence." She said to her sister. Sindella stretched her arms out and raised an eyebrow. "Okay, so we missed our first stop." She said aloud. Mar'i groaned and ran a hand down the side of her face.

Perhaps she shouldn't have slept for so long considering they missed the stop they needed to get off at. Sindella turned to face her, her hair still as crazy as ever. The young woman didn't even want to know what she looked like at the moment. That's when she remembered that she had to text her boyfriend before he would freak out. "So when I say we missed our stop you immediately pull your phone out to text who?" her sister asked tapping her foot against the dusty tile floor impatiently.

It only took a moment to shoot a text over to him. This mini-adventure of theirs was already off to a horrible start. "I'll call an Uber." Mar'i said tapping the app on her phone. Her younger sister scoffed and folded her arms across her chest. While she was on the phone Sindella headed to the nearby washroom. It wreaked and she couldn't help but cough as soon as she stepped inside. As gross as public washrooms were this probably had to be one of the most unsanitary ones she had ever been in.

The mirrors were cloudy and rusty around the edges, walls tagged with pen and spray paint, not to mention the foul odor coming from one of the nearby stalls. She shivered feeling the filth wash over her entire body in waves. All she wanted to do was see how she looked and luckily the mirror was just clear enough for her to see her reflection. She licked her hand and proceeded to smooth her crazy dark hair down onto her head. When that didn't work she then opted to put her hair up in a ponytail.

A ponytail was easier said than done, especially considering she hadn't washed her hair in a few days. Mar'i noticed the disgusted look on her sister's face when she left the washroom. "You ready?" she asked looking down at her sister.

"To leave this place in the dust? Hell yeah."

Mar'i rolled her eyes as they exited the station and sat outside on one of the benches. It was sunny and if it weren't for the harsh wind it might have actually been kind of warm out. "Why do you prefer Leo over us?" Sindella asked, her elbows propped on her legs and her cheeks squished between her two hands. Mar'i gaped at her sibling who seemed to be unaffected by the question she just asked. "I don't prefer him over you, any of you!" she defended herself.

Before the teenager could retort something back at her the Uber pulled up to the curb. The drive was quiet, awkward but quiet. The man sitting in the driver's seat kept looking back at them in the rearview mirror. "What are girls like you heading to a place like Smallville for if you don't mind me asking." He blurted out to try and make conversation. She couldn't blame him; the awkward tension in this car was getting a little too unbearable. "Visiting fami-"

"- we're on a stupid adventure to find truth led by this dumbass." Sindella pointed to her.

The man pursed his lips to try and keep himself from laughing. Mar'i didn't hesitate to elbow her sister in the side for that comment. "Ow. I'm not wrong." Sindella hissed.

"Sorry, my sister seems to get her facts wrong early in the morning." She said through gritted teeth.

Nonetheless, the driver nodded and continued driving. Instead of trying to continue the conversation he decided to turn the radio on. The young woman was slightly relieved that he decided to not continue the conversation because it was going downhill very fast. It wasn't long until they were in Smallville. This was a quaint little town; she admired places like this, a place where everybody knew everybody. She smiled when the car approached the Kent farm. That familiar rusty mailbox and the creaky wooden sign caught her gaze.

The dust kicked up under the car's tires as they drove down the long dirt pathway towards the large white house. The house looked like what any kid would imagine their perfect white picket fenced house would look like. He got as close as he could to the house and finally let the two of them out. She paid the man and apologized for her sister's strange behaviour before bidding the driver farewell. There was nothing but greenery and colourful autumn trees surrounding them. The plot of land was absolutely breathtaking.

If she were ever to get pictures done in an outdoor setting she would want it to be here. This place was perfect. She squinted her eyes and looked towards the front deck as someone stepped out of the front door. "Mar'i is that you?" the woman yelled from the porch. Mar'i raised her hand above her eyes to block out some of the sunlight. Indeed it was her aunt standing in a faded pink sundress. Her aunt Megan always wore pastel colours; she also mixed her Easter inspired colours with a vintage look.

From pictures, she's seen of her aunt Megan from high school in her mother's scrapbook she still didn't know how she developed her sense of style. The two young women walked up to the house, her sister trailing behind her while looking around interested in the dying flowers. "Mar'i I didn't expect you to be here, how are you?" her aunt asked enveloping her in a hug. The redhead smelled of baked goods – mostly chocolate chip cookies.

Megan was a baking fanatic, all she did was bake. The oldest of the latter actually owned a bakery in town. She made the best cookies in the entire world in Mar'i's opinion. "I'm fine, how about you?" she asked pulling away from the warm hug. Her aunt smiled up at her and then smiled at Sindella who stood behind Mar'i. "I am absolutely wonderful, thank you very much. Now come inside the both of you before you catch a cold!" she laughed ushering the two of them in through the front door.

The aroma of freshly baked apple pie wafted through the house and the smell hit the two of them like a truck. It made both of their mouths water and their stomachs growl. The rustic house was oddly quiet – it was like their aunt was the only one on the entire property. "The kids left to school a few hours ago if you're wondering why it's so quiet. Would you like some pie?" Megan asked leading them into the large kitchen. This kitchen was nicer than the one she had back at her home in London.

Then again she didn't expect anything less from a baker like her aunt Megan. "Yes please!" the two blurted out simultaneously. Megan laughed a bright smile on her face as she grabbed the fresh pie from the windowsill and placed it on the counter. They lingered by the kitchen table while watching her cut the pie into pieces. "Why are you two here? Where are you staying?" Megan asked a flurry of questions while passing them two plates. It was quite early to be eating pie but if it was Megan's then the two were to make an exception for the sugary treat.

Her green eyes flickered over to the window when she saw a dark bur move across the grass. She had almost forgotten that there were animals on this farm, she adored the horses. "I just wanted to visit everyone before heading back to London and I think we'll just find a motel or something to stay in for the time being." She lied. Sindella shot her a look, the 'I-know-what-your-doing' look. It was horrible to lie, especially to someone as sweet as her aunt Megan but in this case, she had to.

Sindella didn't know the full reason as to why the two of them travelled all the way to Smallville and for now, that was for the best. As much as she enjoyed her sister's company she was horrible at keeping secrets. "There is no way I am letting you two stay in a motel. The two of you can stay in the guest house with Gar and his girlfriend while you're here." Megan smiled and patted Mar'i's hand.

"Your brother's here? I didn't know that."

"After you're done your pie I'll take the two of you over and introduce you to the two of them."

"That sounds lovely, thank you."

A/N: Hello, I just wanted to say thank you for the comments on the last chapter. It gets very difficult and tiring sometimes when you write something and don't receive feedback on it. No feedback could either mean it was horribly bad or somewhat okay. So it was nice t see that you all still enjoy it and are actually reading this book. I put a lot of thought into the plot and many and I mean, many, things are going to be tied together. It is going to be mind-blowing.
