Chapter 1: A Strange Beginning

3rd Person POV:

(Y/n) could be seen standing atop a building in the quiet town of happy harbour overlooking his target about 1 km away in the distance. As he pulled a black balaclava over his head shielding himself from the cool summer breeze that came off the ocean that night. He then grabs his final piece of gear out of a backpack left nearby for him. A black military combat helmet stripped of all markings that his normal SHD gear would have on it for good reason. No one would be seeing him tonight, and if he was unlucky enough to be seen then having an emblem or name on a velcro patch telling anyone who he was would be the last thing he would want.

The helmet was nothing advanced, just a standard ballistic helmet with goggles on top. The remainder of his outfit, standard operator clothing, the shirt and pants were military ones that special forces from the United States would wear on operations. These combined with a standard plate carrier vest were all black and again stripped of markings. The only colour on (Y/n)'s outfit was the orange ring on his ISAC brick strapped to his right shoulder and on the accompanying wrist watch which was the second component to an agent's ISAC system.

(Y/n) grabbed his rifle which spouted a suppressor at the end of a shortened barrel with a standard holographic optic on top, small laser sight on the side and an angled grip on the bottom. (Y/n) always favored this rifle, it's small and compact nature made it ideal for fighting indoors and in close urban environments. For a side arm he had a P226 pistol with a suppressor on the end.

However if everything went according to plan he would half to use either weapon tonight. His target was Dr. Roquette, an American professor taken hostage by the League of Shadows two weeks ago, most likely for her work in nanotechnology. The CIA suspected that the shadows would use Roquette's research for whatever criminal operations they had planned. For (Y/n) it didn't really matter, he loved the rush of combat and he couldn't care less about who he was fighting.

To tell the truth (Y/n) didn't know why the Shadows wanted her. The CIA was monitoring the case and planning a rescue operation when an unknown third party rescued Roquette and disappeared with her. The CIA had no idea where Roquette and her rescuer could have gone but they had a lead on an assassin sent to eliminate her from a mole in the shadows organization. That's where (Y/n) came in, the CIA wasn't allowed to operate on American soil so they cleverly avoided that legal restriction by forming a deal with the SHD. A small team of Division agents would be activated and complete domestic CIA operations and in turn they would have access to CIA information and protection under their 'banner' wherever they travelled internationally. This was incredibly useful as in the time since the deal was formulated the SHD had taken up a role of activity fighting major criminal and terrorist organizations across the globe. This however could only be done with the small group of agents activated to work for the CIA, as the vast majority of the agents were required to stay hidden until needed by the U.S government.

Regardless of the mountain of restrictions and obstacles they faced, the SHD effectively utilized the CIA's resources. With a handful of well crafted and timed "interventions" the SHD carefully orcistrated a series of events that would allow local law enforcement and public heroes like the Justice League take down the organized crime and terrorist groups without any idea that the SHD existed or that they orcistrated the events.

(Y/n) quickly made his way down an alley until he stopped across the street from the high school he tracked the assassin too. Cheshire was the assassin and she was quite good but she wasn't suspecting to be followed so she made little effort to conceal her movement until she was right on top of the school. Given the amount of time it had taken (Y/n) to get into position he assumed Cheshire was already inside.

(Y/n) POV:

I quickly made entry into the school through the main entrance. Having completed high school at an age of 15 thanks to my above average intelligence meant I didn't spend a lot of time in a traditional high school, I was "gifted" and fast tracked into an espionage program until I was old and strong enough to handle the combat programs. A lot of special training from the CIA and SHD programs were something that came with the job. I excelled in both and they both weren't without their own drawbacks. Participating in these programs left me without any friends apart from other agents who are all way older than me and the instructors from the SHD responsible for my combat training. Often veterans from counter terrorist organizations or highly skilled special forces, these people are older than the Division agents they train and are more like parents to me given the death of my biological parents in a car crash when I was 5. These memories flashed through my head as I attempted to recall the training they basically beat into me. Slowly maneuvering through the high school which I could tell a fight had broken out in. The lack of bodies and damage to the school's interior left only one possible option in my mind. I'm dealing with super powered individuals. Most likely the Justice League. My best guess would be they rescued Dr. Roquette from the league of shadows and had stashed her here until they neutralized whatever threat she had been forced to create. So now I've gone from having a 100% chance of success to probably getting thrown around like a rag doll, but I'll never hear the end of it if I call for backup now, so... onward and upward I guess.

By now I was almost at the computer lab. I checked my gear once more before making entry. "Everything's in place, good let's do this." I thought to myself. I quietly push open the door and hear an arrow being released towards a Chessher.

"Hmm now this is getting interesting" Chessher softly spoke while assessing the new threat posed to her. The archer looks something like a female Green Arrow similar costume only slightly more feminine than GA's. The other hero in the room had taken several shirkin's protecting Dr.Roquette and was on the ground facing away from me. From a quick glance I got at him, he wore an Atlantean style outfit which was all blacked. "Unusual given their outfits usually have bright colours incorporated into it."

Cheshire was the first to take notice of your presence in the lab. "Well now isn't this interesting.....and who might you be" she turned directly facing me. I kept my rifle trained directly on her forehead and prepared to fire. Though it was unlikely that I would hit her.

"FBI, you're under arrest!" this of course is a lie but I don't know anyone in this room so best to stick with the cover identity the CIA made for me.

"Sorry, but no." Chessher coldly replied before detonating a smoke bomb and disappearing from the room completely.

Instantly after Chessher's exit a blur shot by the corner of my eye spinning around to face it I immediately identified it as Kid Flash. Someone I have seen on the news countless times before. If he's here then Flash can't be far behind, I've got to get Roquette out of here.

A/N: (Alright I'm not describing every team member because that would take way too long and frankly I'm not very good at it so ya.)

"Hey who is this guy?" Kid Flash questioned the split second he stopped running.

All eyes turned to me as they expected an explanation. Their collective eyes were now joined by this girl who looked a lot like Martian Manhunter only with a more human looking face. She had just phased through a wall to enter the computer lab. "Ahh, like I said FBI agent...." The martian quickly cut me off by throwing me into a wall across the room with her telekinetic powers. A painful groan escaped and I dropped my rifle as I fell to the ground, the weight of my gear accelerating my fall.

"I can read your mind, I know you're lying to us." The rest of the heroes joined her side and all got ready to attack me. They all look no older than me but with their costumes and the darkness of the room I can't really tell. It would probably be better to feed them with a half truth and hope she can't tell the difference or I'm going to be in a mountain of trouble.

"Fine, you want to truth, I was sent by the CIA to recover Dr. Roquette and bring her home, we tracked Cheshire here and I was sent in to save and return Roquette to Langley." I really hope she can't see through that lie, I'm hopelessly outgunned and won't last a minute in a fight against these guys.

"What's the SHD?" The Martian quickly followed up with. Oh great I'm just batting 1000 today.

I mean she already threw it out and there's no way they trust me unless I give them a full explanation on who I am so I might as well.

"Alright fine..... the SHD is known as the Strategic Homeland Division, it's a fail safe agency that is activated in the wake or during a mass casualty event to ensure the continuity of government within the United States."

The group was in a sort of shock at your explanation and Kid Flash was the next to speak. "Well to my knowledge there hasn't been a mass casualty event so why are you working with the CIA?"

"About five years ago the CIA requested that a small portion of the SHD be activated to assist the CIA in fighting the large and powerful criminal organizations and supervillains that regular law enforcement can't handle. As well as assisting them in domestic operations that bring them into contact with these supervillains." The group stared blankly at me and I didn't have time to show off everything.

"Alright, now if you don't mind Dr. Roquette you're coming with me." This seems to snap the hero's out of the trance they were in and Aqualad was the first to speak up.

"She stays with us, we have been tasked with protecting her." Oh great this is exactly what I was looking to avoid.

"We also need her to complete the virus to shut down the drones" Kid Flash chimed in supporting Aqualad.

"Well you can't stay here, I'm sure you guys are good at what you do but so is Cheshire, she will be back and most likely bring backup"

The hero's took this in and after a brief moment of silence which I must admit felt like an eternity Artemis spoke. "What if we move the doctor and finish the mission, then we can decide what to do."

Well that was probably the best outcome I could hope for in this situation so might as well play ball. "Fine I'm in if you have another location in mind let's get going and fill me in on the way."

*small timeskip*

We moved locations, the hero's filled me in on what Roquette had designed and how she was close to stopping it. Then in order to buy some time for Roquette they set a trap for Cheshire and whoever she came back with. I was left alone with Roquette in the dark business that the hero's set us up in.

I made the decision to constantly walk around the room partly to hide my own nerves that had built up working on a solo operation for the first time, but partly to give Roquette some breathing room. She was incredibly nervous and didn't like me or any of the hero's watching her work. I thought I was fine but she seemed to have built up a dislike for the hero's. Can't say I blame her though they bicker like children, which to be fair we are.

I made my way back to Roquettes' side, just as I began to relax the door flew open. I reacted in an instant aiming my 416 directly at the figure in the door.

It was Aqualad. "Jesus are you guys allergic to radioing anything, I could have shot you!" He was quick to react to my comment as if he didn't care.

"My apologies we communicate through Miss Martian's telekinetic link and I forgot to ask her to link you in, I'll do that now"

'Can you hear me (Y/n)' Miss Martian's voice rang out in my head and causing me to bring my hand up to my helmet as my head throbbed for a brief moment.

(Y/n): 'Ya I can hear you, this is kinda cool.'

Artemis: 'Glad you're settled in because Cheshire is heading your way!'

Aqualad and I stood in silence, each covering a side of the room. I spotted Cheshire first. She threw one of her shurikens at Aqualad.

(Y/n): "Get down!"

I shot the shuriken out of midair sending it flying to the ground in two pieces.

"Mmmhh you're far better than any FBI agent I've encountered so, who are you really?" Cheshire questioned as Aqualad turned to face her.

(Y/n): "Hands up Cheshire it's over"

Cheshire: "I beg to differ little heroes"

Cheshire launched herself at Aqualad as I fired several rounds in her direction. One of the three connected, shattering the katana she was wielding.

Cheshire pulled out her two sai she quickly dispatched Aqualad with a kick sending him across the room. Cheshire turned to me and closed the gap between us rapidly, giving me just enough time to pull out the ballistic shield and extend it.

A loud thud rang out as I slammed Cheshire with the shield.

Cheshire: "Look it's been fun but I have a job to do and I can't let the junior Justice League stop me."

(Y/n): "That's really unfortunate because I don't care."

Chesshire jumped at me landing a kick directly in the center of my shield, enough to stagger me and expose my right leg. This was all she needed, with one swift motion she threw her sai into my right thigh. Only one of the shorter prongs stuck in as I had done a good job of defending myself.

The poison laced on the sai quickly took effect blurring my vision. As I continued to block her attacks with my shield. Cheshire was trying constantly to end the fight and as a result was relentlessly attacking me. I only have to stall long enough for one of the other heroes to get here and take over the fight. My shield was getting heavier and my head started spinning.

(Y/n): "W-what the hell..."

Cheshire: "Aww, you poor thing. I almost feel bad."

Cheshire threw another punch that made contact with my helmet and with that I blacked out.

I awoke in a decently large room on a king size bed. A dresser in the car corner and a desk with an office chair on it. Looking into the closet I saw my clothes, what the hell are they doing here? How did they get here? Where am I? All of these things are on my mind.

As I sit up I notice my gear I was wearing during the fight with Chesshire lager out on the office desk with my guns stored in their proper cases. Which had the SHD logo on it as well as my last name '(L/n)'. The only possible conclusion I could come to was that I was in an SHD recovery facility. Maybe a safe house or something near Happy Harbour.

I slowly made my way out of bed and put on the normal suit I wore around SHD headquarters at Langley. The suit looked like something that you would wear to a funeral. Standard black dress pants, shoes, tie and jacket with a white dress shirt.

I found my ISAC wrist watch on the desk after turning it on and ensuring nothing was tampered with. I limped my way out of my new room.

Once I was in the hall I could tell I was underground. The walls of this cave or tunnels or whatever were rock. I heard voices coming from my left so I made my way towards them, ISAC was the next thing I heard the wrist watch made it's iconic static noise before it spoke in its usual robotic voice.

"Friendly agent detected nearby"

Oh, I must be in a division safe house. Makes sense I got my ass kicked and they bailed me out, I'll probably get chewed out for failing the mission but hopefully the heroes got Roquette out before Cheshire got to her.

What I saw next I can't say I expected.

Walking out of the hallway Into a large open area, I see several circular indents in the wall on my left. They almost look like jet engines.

I begin to limp my way over to the group of heroes I see standing in the middle of the room. Some I recognize, others not so much.

3rd person POV:

Batman: "You're all certain of this."

Robin: "We discussed it and we're good with it."

Batman: "Very well. It's your team and if you're all in agreement we won't stand in your way."

Kid Flash: "Hey, speak of the devil."

The agent limped his way over to the center of the room for the hero's to all turn and face him, however a voice familiar to the agent was the next to speak.

???: "Gotta say kid, that was one way to end a mission."

(Y/n): "Maxwell, what are you doing here?! Where am I?!"

Maxwell is one of the older agents responsible for training (Y/n) and the guy's probably the closest thing the agent has to a father.

Maxwell: "Well these heroes saved your life, they brought you back here for immediate care after you were poisoned."

(Y/n) looked around and said "thanks" to the entire group as he wasn't sure who exactly he was supposed to be talking to. Maxwell let out a small laugh before motioning to the man dressed in a butlers suit standing beside Batman.

Maxwell: "(Y/n), meet Alfred Pennyworth, former SAS operative and responsible for saving your ass once they brought you back here."

(Y/n) looked over at the man who moved to stand beside Maxwell. He was dressed in expensive butler attire, and with an intimidating gaze with an impressive moustache he stared daggers into the agent. (Y/n) couldn't help but feel that he was judging him and barely stuttered out a response.

(Y/n): "T-thank you, sir."

Alfred: "Thanks are not necessary agent, it wasn't much trouble and I enjoyed catching up with your mentor."

Maxwell: "Alright I'll be heading out now, (Y/n) you're staying here and will be working with the sidekicks. You will take orders from your new team leader, Aqualad and any member of the Justice League as if they were my own. Do you understand?"

(Y/n): "Yes sir."

Maxwell: "Good, I brought most of your clothes and gear with me but you can swing by the Gotham city office whenever you have the chance to grab the rest of your gear and personal belongings."

(Y/n): "Yes sir."

Maxwell: "Good luck kid, and try to have fun."

With that Maxwell, Alfred and most of the Justice League members present teleported away through the zeta tubes. (Y/n) was left with the team, if you can call it that given the bickering that played out on the previous mission, and the leaguers Batman, Red Tornado and Zatara.

Batman: "Alright you guys have been through a lot today, give him the tour and get some rest."

With that (Y/n) followed the team throughout the cave. 'This place is absolutely massive, large training room, fully stocked kitchen and lounge area. This place is something else entirely.' (Y/n) thought to himself as he followed the Martian girl who was incredibly eager to show him around.

(Y/n): "So, uhh how did the rest of the fight play out. You guys get Cheshire?"

Kid Flash: "No, the rookie let her get away."

(Y/n): "Rookie! Hey look it wasn't my fault I did the best I-"

Artemis: "He's referring to me, genius. He thinks I let her get away."

After the complete tour and watching a rather entertaining fight between Artemis and Kid Flash (Y/n) got introduced to the remainder of the team and they shared their identities with him to make it less awkward when having a conversation.

Robin approached (Y/n) as he slowly drifted behind the main group, it was a lot to take in at once and the agent was almost overwhelmed.

(Y/n): "So, Grayson, right? When did you guys start up as a team?"

Robin: "Wait what?! How-"

(Y/n): "Maxwell has a picture of him and Alfred on his desk, they're in some jungle in the pacific, he wouldn't tell me more than that. He talked about Alfred all the time and how he works for Br-Batman. Your name came up a few times, nice to finally meet you."

Robin: "Well... nice to meet you too and thanks for keeping it quiet, not everyone here knows."

(Y/n): "Sorry. I thought everyone knew."

(Y/n) POV:

I settled down in the kitchen where M'gann had prepared food for the team.

Robin/Dick: "Hey so how do you know Alfred?"

(Y/n): "Honestly I don't but given how Maxwell talked about him I imagine he mentioned me to Alfred at some point."

M'gann/Miss Martian: "So uhh what should we call you?"

(Y/n): "I beg your pardon?"

Superboy/Conner: "She means your code name, something we can use in the field."

Dick: "Wouldn't want to call you by your name while in the field. It may enable some determined criminals to hurt you or those close to you, it's just a way to protect your identity."

(Y/n): "I see, well I don't really have a superhero name but I guess we can use my callsign, Vanguard."

Dick: "Vanguard it is, welcome to the team (Y/n)."

I spent the rest of the night chatting with the team, about my time with the Division, their missions before I joined and about the Justice League. They explained how the league had asked Red Tornado to be their "babysitter" or "den mother" as Kid Flash called it.

The following morning I went for a long run along the beach and spent the day touring Happy Harbour. Familiarizing myself with the town as I would be one of three teammates living in the cave and might be required to do some shopping from time to time. Apart from that I trained with the team and began using non lethal fighting techniques more often as they frowned upon killing to say the least. Not that I'm fond of it, just that there aren't a lot of non-lethal options available to someone without superpowers.

*Time Skip Until After Episode 11*

The previous months had gone by rather fast. I barely went on missions with the team just helped out with intelligence analysis and criminal behaviour. To tell the truth ISAC did most of it but I have picked up a few tricks in my short time working with the SHD.
I was just finishing up a workout in the caves fully equipped gym when Dick entered.

Dick: "So you all moved in yet?"

(Y/n): "Almost, I've been dragging my feet with it to be honest."

Dick: "Why's that?"

(Y/n): "I don't know, I just feel like I'm being pushed out by the people I've known all my life."

Dick: "Hey I can't help with that feeling but everyone here, we will welcome you with open arms no matter what."

(Y/n): "Ya you guys have, and I'm incredibly thankful for it."

Dick could tell there was more I wanted to say and stayed quiet waiting for me to speak. After a short moment of silence I caved in.

(Y/n): "Well I might as well finish moving in today before I put it off again."

Dick: "Hey that's the spirit, where do you have to go to get the last of your stuff?"

(Y/n): "Gotham, the CIA operates a small office building there and my stuff was shipped to it for pick up."

Dick: "Awesome I'll come with you and we can pick up Artemis on the way back here, she lives in Gotham as well."

(Y/n): "Really, her file says Star City."

Dick: "Well umm you know...."

(Y/n): "Yeah I know, ISAC pulled everything up not too long ago. Not really my place to tell anyone though."

Dick: "Yeah, she'll share when she's ready."

(Y/n): "You fully trust her? I've got to admit it's hard to turn my back to her when fighting someone she's rel-"

Dick: "I trust her. I trust she isn't her past and I trust she'll make a future here, with all of us."

I thought about Dick's words for a moment. I'm almost certain there's more to the story than what we know but it'll be impossible to find out without tipping our hand.

(Y/n): "I'm going to shower and change, I'll meet you at the zeta tubes in half an hour."

After showering I put on one of the many suits I own and clip the wrist watch on. I patiently waited a few seconds for the orange ring to light up confirming that the watch was activated. Then I straightened the black tie while looking in the mirror and headed out.

Dick: "Do you have any clothes that aren't suits?"

(Y/n): "Yes, but I am technically going into work. I'm used to being forced to wear one while working."

Dick: "Did you get them all the same colour?"

(Y/n): "Yeah I couldn't decide what would look professional or not so I went with the standard black jacket and tie with a white shirt."

Dick: "You just may want to wear something else if we ever go out as a team, you might look a little out of place."

Dicks light hearted attitude definitely helped ease the fact that I'm leaving the place I grew up in and walking away, at least temporarily, from the "family" that raised me since my biological family's death. In truth the Division provided a poor excuse for a family, a few agents tried to give me something resembling a childhood and I'll be forever grateful... but it wasn't the same.

I grabbed the two bags that were in my locker and left out the back door I entered. Finding Dick had now changed into his Robin outfit and perched atop a light post near the entrance to the alley.

Robin: "Ready to head back Vanguard?"

(Y/n): "I guess you could say that."

We made our way back to the broken down telephone box in a back alley that served as one of the Justice League's zeta tubes in Gotham city. As we approached the zeta tube Artemis slowly came into view, she looked mentally exhausted. I wonder what got her like that?
