Chapter 71
A/N: If any of you have a problem with the SPN ships of Destiel and Saileen then please skip the first part of this chapter as it includes both ships.
Recently Megan had been busting her ass working, she direly needed the money. Gotham University was great and all, she was grateful that she was accepted to go there, however it was very expensive, especially the culinary program she was enrolled in. There was a lot of work that needed to be done at the diner, no one wanted to do the night shifts so she did them. Of course whenever Peggy could she would volunteer to help her on the night shift as well.
Peggy and her were alone in the diner cleaning up; the nearby clock had just struck nine-thirty. The day had been long, mostly with studying and practicing certain recipes for her exams coming up. Her friend was tackling one end of the diner while she worked on cleaning up the other. The cook had left half an hour ago when they closed the place, now they just needed to finish cleaning up. "Megan do you have any dishes you want me to get started on?" Peggy asked from behind her.
The young woman shrieked and spun around, hand on her heaving chest as she tried to stop her racing heart. Peggy gave her a sweet smile, she was holding a tray of dirty dishes. "Actually yes that'd be great." she smiled and piled her few dishes onto Peggy's tray. She turned back around and continued wiping down the grimy table; there was a man seated here earlier who had terrible table manners. A couple minutes went by when she heard the small bell on top of the entrance chime.
Her golden eyes flickered over to the entrance to see her newest friend standing there. She dropped the damp cloth on the table and walked over to the front entrance. "I don't know if you can read but the sign says 'closed'." she smirked and folded her arms over her chest. The young man scratched the back of his head and let out a nervous chuckle. "I know but I was walking by earlier and saw you and Peggy cleaning by yourself, I wanted to help." he said looking down at his shoes.
Megan smiled softly at him, Sam was a really sweet guy. The small bell chimed again as the front door swung open, three more people waltzed inside of the diner. "I hope you don't mind but I brought some help." he moved out of the way to let the three people inside.
"Sammy here wanted to help the damsels in distress." his brother said, swinging an arm around Sam's neck.
The red head snickered and nodded, she had met Sam's brother as well as Cas before. However she hadn't met the third person before, not physically at least. Sam had shown her plenty pictures of the young woman before. "You must be Eileen, I'm Megan." she greeted, stretching her hand out towards the brunette. Sam talked about her all the time, he was practically head over heels for her. "Nice to meet you." Eileen smiled and shook her hand.
It wasn't long until she gave the four of them things to do. Technically they shouldn't have been in here after hours but her boss didn't need to know that they were here. There was a lot to get cleaned up after today. Usually the routine kitchen scrub down would be at the end of the week - that usually took her and Peggy four hours to do. However she had four extra pairs of hands to help them, which was why they were cleaning it now.
Music was blaring from Peggy's phone, mostly music from the roaring twenties she had downloaded. They didn't mind, Megan was used to her vintage music anyways. "And I thought Dean's music was outdated." Cas muttered from beside her. Megan turned her head and tried to muffle her laughter into her shoulder. Her, Cas, and Eileen were cleaning the pile of dishes that had accumulated over the evening.
The diner was always busy when it neared the end of the week, even more so when it was warm outside. Everyone wanted a milkshake when it was hot out, she's bought her fair share over the past week and a half. "Oh yeah, what music do you listen to?" she asked.
"He listens to sappy love songs!" Dean called over his shoulder.
The two women at the sink snickered, Castiel seemed like that type of person, Megan adored his full name. It was quite whimsical, almost like an angel. They finished the dishes and the cleaning in a quarter of the time it would usually take her and Peggy. Tomorrow she had one class late in the afternoon, she had time to sleep in if she needed. They were all gathered in the front of the diner now, Dean stepped over and placed his hand on top of the old juke box. "Now we're talking, we need some actual music." he said pushing a quarter into the coin slot and selecting a song.
Sam groaned and dropped his head onto Eileen's shoulder. His older brothers taste in music wasn't particularly vintage but what he chose was surprising to say the least. "He's so sappy." Peggy leaned over and whispered to her. They were leaning back against the counter watching in awe, Dean was such a sap when he wanted to be. "Mr. Novak may I have this dance?" he asked holding his hand out towards the dark haired man in front of him. Megan and Peggy nearly melted into a pile of fluffiness and sweetness.
The dancing was cute, Sam and Eileen joined in not long after. "May I have this dance Ms. Morse?" Peggy asked in a deep voice. Megan looked around as if she were asking somebody else, although there was only the six of them in the diner. She gasped, "Really, me?" she asked sarcastically.
"Yes, I believe you would be a fine dance partner." Peggy said, her voice as deep as it could go.
"Well I guess I have no choice then." she giggled and took her hand.
They joined the other four in the middle of the diner, dancing was always fun. Megan had only gone dancing a few times in her life so she wasn't exactly graceful on her feet. "Some days I wish everyday could be like today." Peggy sighed and rested her forehead against the red heads shoulder. Megan nodded, today was a nice day. Her two cooking classes were simple, she had studied during lunch, work wasn't too stressful, and now was just - she was having so much fun.
She heard all about Peggy's day earlier, her professor didn't show up so she didn't have class and she went out to lunch with Steve. Her gaze drifted over to Eileen and Sam, they reminded her much of herself and Conner when they were together. She missed Conner's company, she used to be so in love with him. The way Sam looked at Eileen was like she hung the moon in the sky - Conner used to look at her that way.
Then life happened, she changed, he changed, everything changed. He was hurting so much right now and she was here dancing. Just then she realized something and froze in place. "Can you lock up, I just realized I have something to do." she said, Peggy nodded and smiled.
"Thank you guys so much, milkshakes are on me tomorrow! I have to go!" she yelled, grabbing her jacket and racing out of the diner.
Her feet were quick and soon she was running through the city. She arrived at the university in record time and arrived even sooner in front of a familiar door. There was no time for her to be nervous; it was late yet she was pounding her fist against the dormitory door. It took a minute until a disheveled and tired Conner opened the door. "Listen I know it's late and you probably don't care but I do Conner, I'm not going to let you waste away here alone and ruin your life. It's not what she would've wanted and you know that," she took a deep breath, "- so I'm not leaving you." she announced.
This was the most out of breath she had ever been in her entire life. Conner was sad and broken and he was just like her in so many ways. "Today was good for me but it wasn't perfect. It wasn't perfect because you weren't with me and I miss that. I miss us." she gulped and stared up at him.
"Okay." he said.
"Okay?" she asked confused.
"Okay." he repeated.
He turned around and walked back into his dormitory leaving the door open. Megan stood there still wildly confused, her heart was rattling against her ribcage now. "Are you coming in?" he asked from inside. She blushed and quickly nodded stepping inside and shutting the door behind her.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
He was lucky he was fast and had quick reflexes. Otherwise he would've had a black eye right about now. "What the hell is wrong with you, why would you do this?" she yelled throwing her right fist towards him. This time he caught he and closed his fingers around her hand. "Calm down, breathe." he instructed while breathing deeply in and out. Her face was bright red, triggered by anger, and she had the look of murder in her stormy eyes.
Artemis, she was force to reckon with when angry. He told her mere minutes ago that he was going on the undercover mission. She retaliated by throwing a fork at him before he could even finish his sentence. "Babe listen to me, Dick called me and asked okay? He didn't want you going back into something like this." he lied pulling her into a comforting hug. Her blood was boiling, she still wanted to punch him.
At first she thought he was the one who sabotaged her chances of going but clearly after what he told her that wasn't the case. Dick was the one to blame not Wally. "I can teach you a few things if you want, down at the gym later?" she asked giving him an apologetic smile. The least she could do was help him prepare and teach him so useful moves. "Yeah, sure. Wanna come take Brucely to the park with me?" he asked pressing a convincing kiss to her forehead. The blonde shrugged all of the anger inside of her away and nodded. The park was full of children, school had ended half an hour ago.
They had it so easy, adult life was so complicated and stressful. All of these exams were coming up and she felt as if she were to fail them. "So, when do you have to leave?" she asked, squeezing his hand to grab his attention. Just then a flurry of children ran over and asked to pet the pit-bull. Brucely didn't mind, he even laid down and began to roll around in the grass for them. "What was your question babe?" he asked while watching with a fond smile at the attention Brucely got.
The pit-bull liked children, that was one thing to keep in mind for the future. "Nothing." she sighed and looked over at the playground. Children always intrigued her, she never had much of a childhood. When she was young she worried too much about whether she'd be alive the next day then if she were to go playing out with her friends in the park. She didn't have a lot of friends until she met Wally and the rest. The redhead standing next to her was the best mistake she's ever made.
Before she could live without ever having to see him again, now she couldn't. If Artemis lost him she wouldn't know what to do. He was the one who carried her out from the flames, him leaving her might be the thing that throws her back into it. Just thinking about it made her face twist into an unpleasant frown. They weren't at the park for long, getting home seemed a lot further a walk than she thought it was when on the way to the park. Brucely seemed to have fun, the dog was bouncing up and down when they got back into their apartment.
Wally fell on the couch the first chance he got. The blonde lingered in the front foyer, she couldn't stop thinking. For once her brain wouldn't shut up. She had to start thinking about life without her boyfriend for awhile. They wouldn't be able to talk while he was gone either. The feeling in the pit of her stomach, was almost as bad as how she felt when her mother died. Was she being selfish? He seemed excited to go she shouldn't be acting like this.
The one thing Artemis Crock wasn't was selfish. Between the two of them Wally was picked fair and square. He was still lying on the sofa when she came in and threw a water bottle at him. Luckily he caught it before it hit him in the head. Wally raised an eyebrow to see her standing before him in her gym clothes. It took a second for him to realize why she was ready for the gym. They didn't usually workout at night, that was their early morning routine. "Get dressed, it's time for training - Crock style." she smirked, this was going to be fun, for her anyways.
This wasn't fun, Wally hated this so much. It was strenuous, tiring, and it made him sweat like a pig. Not to mention he was stretching muscles he didn't know he had. "You did this - every single day since you were six?" he asked in between heavy set breaths. She nodded, finishing her last pull up on the bar before dropping down to the floor. "Yep, now we're running." she smirked and raced off a head of him. If it came to running he was definitely going to win this little race. "Are you coming slowpoke?" she yelled over her shoulder.
They did several competitive races after that, he won every single one of them. Wally West was a track star, he wasn't going easy on anyone - even if his competitor was his girlfriend. However she did beat him in everything else, the blonde was stronger than she looked. She had been teaching him defensive moves for an hour now, every other minute he ended up lying on the floor groaning. This was probably payback for winning every race. "Need a hand?" she smiled down at him, her face flushed red from working so hard, holding her hand out to him.
Wally admired her, without her he didn't know how the world would keep spinning. He took her hand letting her pull him to his feet. They were at it for another half an hour, by the time they were finished the two of them were worn out. The two of them stood in the elevator heading back up to their apartment. "Please just don't die." she whispered.
He frowned, "I won't beautiful, I promise." he replied.
The elevator doors slid open and they both stepped out.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was warm, too warm, so they decided to spend their day by the poolside. This was one of the upsides of living with Pamela, that and the fact that Harley got to see her girlfriend in a bikini. The blonde hated the heat as much as the next person did, sometimes the Gotham weather was unbearable. This city was awful in all sorts of ways yet she could never seem to escape it for too long. The sun was beating down on them and they were all sweating up a storm.
Music was playing from the small portable radio, Melody was in the pool swimming, Pamela was watering her poor plants, and Harley was lying on the grass whining. "It's so hot Pammy!" she complained loudly. She had been whining to her girlfriend for the past two hours since they had been outside. "Then go inside Harley." Pamela rolled her eyes and bent down to pull out a few weeds she had spotted.
"But then I wouldn't get to see your beautiful face." the blonde smirked.
Pamela's face flushed a bright shade of red, she spun around and sprayed Harley with the cold water from the hose. The woman squealed and jumped up from the grass alarmed and now very cold and wet. From the pool they could both hear the young girl laughing. "This isn't funny!" she yelled, turning her head to see the small girl dying of laughter while lying on a purple pool float. Once again she felt a cold burst of water except this time Pamela got her back. "That's it I'm going inside!" Harley yelled, grabbing her nearby towel and wrapping it around herself.
The two left outside couldn't help but laugh, sometimes she was quite dramatic. The redhead continued to water her thirsty plants when a bucket of cold water got dumped over her head. For a moment Pamela stood there frozen, her face flushed red with anger, and her vision blocked from her wet hair in front of her face. "You're so dead Harleen!" she yelled turning around and grabbing the giggling blonde by her waist.
"Red put me down!" Harley yelled as she looked back at the approaching pool.
Pamela didn't hesitate when she dropped her into the pool. However she didn't expect to be pulled into the cold water as well. The two of them resurfaced, wet, and equally miserable. This led to a splash war, Melody joined Pamela's side. "I gave birth to you this isn't fair!" Harley yelled from the corner of the pool. She was using the purple pool float as a shield to block the water coming at her.
She was definitely much cooler now after the dunk in the water and the splash attack. The splash war didn't last for much longer and soon the two women were pushing Melody around on the giant purple float. "Ivy why do you like flowers so much?" Melody asked, she was always a curious child. Pamela folded her arms on the edge of the pool float and rested her chin on them. "I don't love just flowers, I love the environment. We need to take care of it, nurture it like your mother did with you when you were a baby." Pamela explained with a fond smile.
For her birthday Harley was definitely going to get her a book on gardening. "So the Earth is a baby?" Melody asked, tilting her head to the side.
Pamela laughed, "Yes, Earth is like a baby." she smiled.
They had been in the pool for an hour and a half now, Harley was beginning to turn into a prune. "Okay, how 'bout we get outta here and go inside for dinner?" Harley asked. Melody turned around and smiled widely nodding.
"Can we have pizza?" Melody asked climbing out of the pool.
"No, we'll have something that's healthy." Pamela said with a smile.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This so called 'mission' was approaching closer than she would've liked. His wife had been quiet about it for the most part. It was unusual for Roquette to not voice her opinion, especially when it came to things she disliked. They were out for a walk, the outside air was healthier than being cooped up inside. "Do you know where you're headed yet?" she asked out of the blue. No other information had been relayed to him yet.
However he did have an exact date as to when his intense training would begin. of course the only reason he was being trained was so that he could protect himself if needed. Kaldur was leaving on June thirtieth. That was in a week - they only had a week left together. "No, I will let you know as soon as I know my love." he leaned over and kissed the side of her head. She should've been studying for her upcoming exams but she wasn't.
School should be the only thing she's focused on yet she worried for her husband and for their unborn child. She was probably the worst example of a university student there was. Ahead of them there were a few children giggling and playing hopscotch. "That's what you'll be doing very soon." she said looking down and rubbing her stomach. Kaldur smiled fondly at her, he was enjoying all the time left that he had with her - that he had with them.
They arrived home within the hour, Roquette wanted to at least try to study for her upcoming exams. "I'm just going to grab my bag from upstairs, can you start lunch?" she asked from the base of the staircase. He nodded and headed through the living room into the kitchen. There was a man leaning against the counter, upstairs he heard his wife scream. "My son, I thought I'd drop by for a visit, don't worry she's fine." his father smiled and put down the glass of water he was holding.
"Who the hell are you? Don't you touch me, Kal!" Roquette yelled as she was guided downstairs and into the kitchen.
The man holding her was tall and broad, most likely hired muscle for his father. She was glaring holes into every inch of his body at the moment. "If you don't unhand me my husband will kick your ass, I'll kick your ass, and hell - my baby will kick your ass!" she yelled pulling her arm from the man's strong grip. He went to grab her again but backed down when Kaldur's father raised his hand. "I don't take kindly to your hired muscle manhandling my wife." Kaldur said flatly, his menacing gaze directed at his father.
No one hated these surprise visits more than Roquette did, she absolutely loathed his father. "She's a fiery one, beautiful as a phoenix." his father said with a smile.
"Is there a reason for this visit father?" Kaldur asked, ignoring the mans previous comment.
"Can a father not visit his son and daughter-in-law?" he mused.
The man sauntered into the living room and took a seat on the sofa. The entire ordeal with him being here made both of them uncomfortable. "Take a seat." he said, patting the cushion next to him. They both sat down, Roquette was more uncomfortable than anything. "I'm eagerly awaiting for you to join me my son, you'll be a perfect fit." his father clasped his hands together and smiled.
This man was absolutely pleased with turning his highly respected son into a criminal. "I came to ask, have you found yourself a right hand man?" his father asked.
"Yes, he's an old friend of mine." Roquette blurted out.
His father raised an eyebrow at her and her husband gave her a wild look. She was crazy for saying that but now she had to roll with it. "What's his name?" he asked. She answered within a heartbeat, "He goes by Phoenix, he's good and that's that." she stood up and brushed her clothes down.
"Are you sure she knows what kind of man you need?" his father whispered to Kaldur.
She strode over to the doorway and turned her head to look back at the older man. "Don't assume your son married a good girl Black Manta."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mar'i had made plenty of friends over the past two months she had been attending this school. At times she forgot all about the two special people she left in Gotham, almost as if they never existed in the first place. Here she was popular, happy, and everyone accepted her for who she was. Everything seemed to be falling into place perfectly for her, she couldn't dream of leaving. Colette and Toni were her best friends - the sisters she never had.
The bell rang signaling the period switch, she had gym - one of her favourite subjects. They were doing a lot of running lately, outside was nice and warm which meant they got to use the track. "Are you coming back for class next year?" Toni asked while tying up her running shoe. That was a question Mar'i hadn't thought about yet. Would her parents let her come back to this marvelous school next year?
She hoped so, she didn't want to go back to Gotham Academy anymore. "I mean I want to but I don't know if my parents will let me." she frowned and began to fidget with her hands. She really, really wanted to attend school here. The only downside of attending school here was that she didn't get to see her parents all that often. The school did end up mailing her letter to them, she got one back saying that they would replace her phone when she got back to Gotham.
The teacher blew her whistle calling all of them over to the track. They lined up at the white chalk line, all of them in their individual lanes, Mar'i was ready to win. "If I beat you I get to borrow your computer for an hour." Mar'i said sticking her hand out towards Toni.
"Okay, if I win I get to borrow your Polaroid for an hour." Toni smiled and grabbed her hand shaking it.
"Deal." Mar'i grinned and shook her hand.
The teacher laid out the rules and then blew her whistle. Toni was definitely faster than her at the beginning but soon Mar'i blew past her. She turned her head and looked back giving her friend the stink eye. She continued to run until Toni caught up to her, running alongside her at a steady pace. "I am going to get that Polaroid." she said before pushing on a head of her.
Unfortunately Toni won the race and after classes were finished they were up in their room looking for her Polaroid camera. Mar'i didn't even know she had this camera until she unpacked her suitcase the first day she was here. On the back of the black camera was a piece of masking tape with the initials 'Z.Z'. She could only guess that it was her mother's camera from when she was a young girl.
She appreciated it nonetheless and took many pictures as soon as she saw she had it. Her, Colette, and Toni were obsessed with the camera. "Found it!" Toni yelled, pulling the box out from Mar'i's closet. She had forgotten that she had hidden it there. Toni marched over and dropped the box onto her bed, pulling off the lid and dropping it to the side. Inside at the bottom of the box were a plethora of different pictures.
Most of these pictures were embarrassing, sometimes they all screwed around with the camera for no reason. Colette and Toni liked to pull pranks on her while she was sleeping and would take pictures of her with a drawn on mustache or other stupid things scribbled onto her face. Of course Mar'i made sure to always get the two of them back. "Okay it's time to model." Toni announced.
"No." Mar'i whined.
The door opened, Colette walked inside and let out a long sigh. "I hate math and I hate your brother." she sighed and tossed her backpack to the side.
"It's okay, I hate him too." Toni laughed.
They all mutually had a hate for Toni's older brother, he was a nuisance. The brunette walked over to her closet, camera in hand, and pulled out one of her scarves throwing it at Colette. "Time to be fabulous girls." Toni smiled and raised the camera to snap the picture. The pale blue scarf was covering Colette's face, she was far too lazy to move it.
The two of them took Toni's colourful array of scarves and danced around, they even jumped off each other's beds. Mar'i felt like a model but the pictures didn't turn out like the ones you'd find in a magazine. "These are so stupid." Mar'i groaned and buried her face into her pillow when she saw the pictures, they were absolutely awful to look at.
"This one is even worse." she began to laugh looking at the picture the three of them took.
They were rocking different coloured scarves and giant sunglasses - it was so bad that it was funny. "I'm throwing all of these out." Mar'i said scooping up all of the pictures and dumping them in the trash. It was a waste of film but they had fun so it was worth it. She realized in this moment that she didn't want to leave her friends behind.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This was worrying and exciting all at once, she was scared of her school exams but she was excited for the summer break. Zatanna was worried about going into the school year late, luckily her boyfriend had her back. He supported her one hundred percent and she was grateful for that. Dick Grayson was her family - the only family she had left. The night tremors she received were awful but he always helped her through it.
Today was different, she woke up refreshed and oddly happy. That wasn't a feeling she got all too often. "Dick?" she called out, he wasn't in bed next to her. She knew he didn't have work today, he told her last night. From their room he could hear some noises coming from the kitchen. She reached under the bed and grabbed the baseball bat from underneath, Dick gave it to her to help her feel safer whenever he wasn't home.
Her heart was beating in her ears and every breath she took was like it would be her last one. She let her guard down when she saw that it was just her boyfriend in the kitchen making, more like attempting, breakfast. "Dick you scared me half to death." She sighed and tossed the baseball bat onto the nearby couch. He jumped when he heard her voice, only to then scramble over and cover her eyes with his hands.
Zatanna let out another tired sigh, "What's your plan Grayson?" she asked as he led her over to the table. He helped her sit down and grabbed a nearby blindfold which he then tied around her face. "No peeking, I didn't expect you to wake up this early." he instructed before planting a kiss to the top of her head. She sat there, a sour look on her face and her arms crossed over her chest.
There was a few minutes of crackling from the pan, strings of poorly muffled curses, and the smell of something burning. Everything went quiet and she heard a plate be placed down in front of her. "Okay you can take it off." he said, he sounded excited. She untied the blindfold and smiled when she saw the breakfast he had prepared for her. There was also a wrapped box behind the plate of burnt food.
At least he tried to prepare breakfast for her which was so sweet of him to do. "I mean I know it isn't something you'd eat in a restaurant but I tried, but open that first. Unless you want to open it after." he ran a hand through his hair and flashed her a nervous smile.
"I'll open it now then, love the wrapping by the way." she laughed and ripped the colourful paper from the box.
It was a regular cardboard box and when she opened it she pulled out a much smaller black box. Her hand went to cover her mouth after her brain processed what the small box actually was. Dick stood up and hurried to her side to explain himself, he was red in the face and overall super dorky. "I know you have your issues and I have mine, we're young and I'm not asking you to marry me but I got this ring for you to show you that," he paused to catch his breath, "- okay what I'm trying to say is; Zatanna Zatara will you marry me later?" he asked.
She had tears in her eyes and she didn't know what to say. Yes, both of them had issues and this year had been one of the worst and best in her life. They were both still so young and she was willing to wait because it was still very early for them to get married. However she did love him, Dick Grayson was a screw up and a dork but she loved him so much. "Yes, I will marry you later." she smiled and slipped the silver ring onto her finger.
Within an instant he had her in his arms in the air, he was spinning her around so quickly she was seeing stars. "You jerk you're going to make me puke!" she yelled gently hitting him in the back. He placed her down on her feet and didn't hesitate to kiss her. "Now do you want to go out to eat?" he asked, "- my meal is pretty shitty."
"I would love too." she laughed.
They were happy.
