Chapter 66

" - so light up the sky with your teenage recklessness and watch the consequences sink in along the horizon." she took a breath after finishing her poem.

Artemis was never great at poetry, she highly disliked that part of writing. However she was required to present a poem of her own to the large class. She took inspiration from her and her friends days in high school. They were all quite reckless no matter how many people tried to defend that they weren't, Wally and Dick got shot at one point for crying out loud! Everyone clapped, every single person was bored by now. She couldn't blame them, she acted the same when someone else was up before her.

Her English professer graciously took the poem with a smile. "Good job Ms. Crock." she said as Artemis nodded and headed back to her seat. The time ticked by slowly, almost too slowly for her liking. The hour past and soon she was out the door and heading to the cafeteria. The university indeed had a cafeteria and the food was to die for. It was way better than the food that she used to get in high school. Then again it could be because this was one of the most prestigious universities in America.

The familiar messy red hair caught her gaze as she stepped inside. It was still early, only a few people were milling around. Wally was leaning against the wall with his hands in his pockets, the typical bad boy stance. "Do I look bad enough yet?" he asked whilst pushing himself off of the wall. She simply rolled her eyes before giving him a fleeting kiss on the lips. "How was physics?" she asked, they were in line now.

"Boring as hell, I sat there missing my sweet, sweet archer." he said with a sarcastic smile.

They all knew that she wasn't exactly the sweetest, only to him. Other than that she was a little rough around the edges at times. The two of them found a little table by a nearby window to sit at. Finally, April was living up to it's name. For the past six days it had been pouring rain non stop. It was quite a pain to walk Brucely in. "Hey scooch over" a familiar voice said. Artemis looked up and her eyes went wide before she jumped up out of her seat. "What the hell are you all doing here?" she asked before throwing her arms around Zatanna.

To her surprise the whole crew was here; Zatanna, Dick, Megan, Conner, Kaldur, and Roquette. They hadn't all been together since that party. The one where she got royally drunk at. "How are you all?" she asked as the six of them joined their table. For a moment it felt like she was back in high school, all of them crowded at their table in the cafeteria. "Well I'm pregnant." Roquette said, everyone went deathly silent.

They all looked surprised with the exception of Megan and Kaldur. "Shut up." Artemis said, her shock quickly morphed into an ecstatic look. All of them were still young but this was a baby. One of the most beautiful creations in the world. "I propose a toast, with soda." Dick said holding up his soda can. The six laughed before tapping their soda cans together in glee. Chatter soon ensued, everyone talking across to each other and laughing.

She sat back, silent as ever, and watched all of them. "Are you okay beautiful?" Wally whispered, his lips against the back of her ear. Artemis was actually perfectly fine, happy even. She just wanted to take all of this in. This might be only of the last times they all spent time together. The first year of university was already pulling them all apart. After this year they were only going to grow further away from each other. "I'm just trying to remember us y'know?" she said softly so only he could hear.

Wally understood perfectly. Everyone had a lot going on and it took him weeks to plan this. Artemis just seemed to stressed lately and he wanted to make her happy. Seeing the ecstatic look on her face when she saw them made all of that planning worth while. He would do anything to make sure she was happy, it was one of his favourite things to do. "When are you two going to get married?" Dick asked, a shit eating grin plastered to his face. Artemis swore for a second she could see the young, wild, and goofy Dick Grayson.

Both of their faces flushed a bright shade of red, a red so bright that rivaled Wally's hair. "The real question is when are you two getting married?" Wally retorted as he gestured towards Dick and Zatanna. The table erupted in a fit laughter, this was all so nostalgic. They were all there for an hour just hanging out like the good old days. Every single one of them looked so different. "I love what you did with your hair." Artemis said running her fingers through Megan's hair.

It was cut short, the ends of her hair just brushing her shoulders. The style definitely suited her. "Thanks, it's easier to manage for when I'm in the kitchen." Megan said with a smile.

"How's Conner, Wally and I heard about what happened to Wendy on the news." she whispered before sneaking a glance at the dark haired individual across the table.

Megan flashed her a grim smile, clearly it wasn't good. He didn't even look all that happy, there was a sadness to his eyes now. "I come home from class sometimes and he's just sitting in my dorm staring out the window. He misses her and I try everything to make him feel better but it just - nothing seems to help." Megan's eyes went watery, frustration laced with her words.

The feeling of loss was something Artemis knew too well. It took time, a lot of time. "These things take time Megan, all you can do is be there for him. Does he talk about what happened?" she asked, the both of them were still whispering. No one else seemed to notice that the two weren't taking part in the goofy conversation yet. The rest of them were just telling embarrassing stories to one another. "He mentions some parts but he gets choked up when speaking about her. I just feel so powerless." Megan said as Artemis nodded.

"Hey Arty remember that time in gym class when you almost shot me in the face with that arrow?" Wally asked catching her attention.

Immediately memories from that day flashed through her mind. A light hearted laugh escaped her lips as she nodded. It was funny to think about it now, she absolutely despised him back then. The laughter continued as the two women were drawn back into the conversation. This was what she missed and she was glad that they all got to spend this time together.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After they all left the two of them headed back towards the car. They were scheduled for another ultrasound today. The appointment was not for another hour but the traffic in Gotham could sometimes become hectic. "That was fun." she said as they walked towards the parking lot. It was nice to see all of their friends again. Lately she had been so busy with classes and the baby.
Med school was quite challenging but Roquette was confident in herself. She was going to become a doctor, she was too stubborn to fail. "I agree, I enjoyed it as well." Kaldur said while lacing their fingers together. The two of them walked hand in hand into the parking lot. Before it was lightly raining but just as they got close to the car it began to down pour. She squealed, something he hadn't heard in a very long time, as they ran to the car.
They shed their wet jackets and tossed them into the back seat once they got into the car. As soon as the car was on she turned up the radio. Sometime during the leisurely drive her hand found his, fingers intertwined one again. There was something so reassuring about holding his hand. She gazed outside the water streaked window while she hummed along to the music.
The rain, although cold, was so calming to watch. There were plenty of cars in front and behind them. However her dark eyes were instead fixated on the rain drops rolling down the window. "My love are you listening?" Kaldur said as she snapped out of her serene gaze. She turned her head and smiled ever so slightly when she saw his face. Even now when she looked at him it still felt like she was seeing him for the first time again. Kaldur was the love of her life, the one person she trusted most in this world.
He was the only family she had and she was grateful for having him by her side. "What about Kai?" he asked as she raised an eyebrow.
"I don't know, what about Kai?" she asked, eyebrow still raised questioningly.
"The name Kai, it's Hawaiian for the sea." he said with a warm smile.
There was silence that fell over the car, the name washed over her like an ocean wave over a beach. They met by the sea, it's where their love began to propser. One day she wanted them to move back to the seaside. It would be such a beautiful place to wake up to every morning. Her eyes welled with tears, she tore her hand away from his to quickly wipe tham away. "If it's a girl, how about Oshun?" she asked as he turned his head, eyes as bright as the sun.
Both of them adored the sea. Kaldur more than anyone she had ever met. "We'll have to see what name our child will receive when they're here." he said, the cars behind them began to honk. She snickered when he looked back to see the light had turned green. The jelly was cold when it was spread across her stomach. It sent goosebumps along her skin and shivers down her spine. Kaldur was standing next to her, his hand around hers as he stared at the monitor.
When they heard the low thumping coming from the speakers they both teared up. She was already five months into the pregnancy, the bump had gotten larger already. Although this was the fifth time they had heard the babies heart beat it still brought tears to their eyes. This was their baby, a being sparked from their love. "I love you." she whispered looking down at her stomach.
"I love you so much." she whispered once more with a smile, her tears running freely down her face.
They loved this baby so much, they loved the small human more than anything. "I love you both." Kaldur murmured against her forehead where he planted a kiss. "More than anything."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Today was the day she would be leaving to another country. A place where she had no family, no friend's, and no sense or normality. "Please don't make me go." she said in a small voice, her eyes trained on her feet. It was late, quite late actually. She bid Melody farewell today, the poor girl's were both in a mess of tears. Damian never came to say goodbye to her. It hurt, she wanted him now more than anything.

He was her first friend, he made her feel things nobody else did. Perhaps it was the beginning of a childish crush but she wouldn't know that now. "You'll have fun trust me, I'm actually jealous that you're going." Zatanna said with a fond smile. Mar'i had long given up on trying to reason with them now. When she was first told that she would he leaving she cried. Life didn't seem fair, nothing ever seemed fear.

Peace was made soon after that, she knew that nothing she could do would change their minds. "Hey Dad can I borrow your phone?" she asked as she stepped into his room. He looked up from buttoning his shirt up and nodded before tossing the device to her. The room was quiet, a lot of her belongings had been packed away already. Her bedroom seemed awfully empty now. "Wayne Resident's, Alfred Pennyworth at your service." Alfred said across the line.

"Hey Alfred." she said glumly.

A part of her hoped that Damian would answer. The whole day she had been numb. She cried herself dry the night before, at least she thought so until now. "Can you - can you tell Damian that I'll miss him and that I'm sorry?" she asked, tears streaking down her face and her voice trembling. She promised herself that she wouldn't cry over him but she here she was on the verge of balling her eyes out yet again.

Mar'i hated that he resented her. After all the last words he said to her was that she was nothing but a 'freak'. "I'm sorry that I don't look normal and that I'm weird. Please just - " she began to sob, her words were all a jumbled mess after that. Alfred spoke calmly to her like any grand father figure would. Mar'i was closer to the butler than she was to Bruce. Bruce Wayne seemed so scary and mean compared to Alfred who was so caring and loving. "Please don't cry Miss Mar'i, Master Damian can become quite troublesome at times. I have no doubt that he won't call you once you arrive." Alfred said trying to calm the poor girl down.

Alfred made sure to cheer her up with wondrous facts about England and the school she was attending. Apparently he enjoyed spending his time in the British Isles. The time flew by so fast and soon she was at the airport. Both of her mother's and her father were there to say goodbye. Bruce was waiting by the private jet for her. There was a silence as she stared up at her three parents. Zatanna and Kori were both equally her mother's, she loved them both so much.

Her father, Richard Grayson sometimes screwed up but his heart was in the right place. She wanted to be like him when she was older. "Goodbye my little bumgorf, I'll talk to you soon!" Kori exclaimed with a bright smile as she pulled the girl into a bone crushing hug. Mar'i knew now where she got her unusual strength from. It felt like she was being exiled to an entirely different planet. Her family and friends were here in Gotham, not in some all girl's school in Britain. "Bye sunshine, have fun." Dick said wrapping her in a tight hug.

Both feet left the ground and he picked her up and spun her around. At first he didn't even knew he had a daughter but now it's felt like he's known her for year's. He didn't want to let her go. "Please be careful." he whispered placing her back down onto her feet. She nodded, tears in her eyes, oh those peculiar eyes. Mar'i Grayson wasn't remembered for her eyes, she was remembered for how much heart she had. "You be good, make some friends, take this as an opportunity and make the best out of it, okay?" Zatanna said, her eyes were watery as well.

The young woman had been through hell and back this year. Mar'i clung onto her and began to cry. Yeah, she got her heart from her. Maybe that was the problem, not now but it would cause issues later on, she had too much of it. Zatanna kneeled down, her hands on either side of the girl's face as she smiled. "It's okay, at first you'll miss us but sometimes these things happen. You'll be good I know it." she whispered, her tears running down her face.

"How do you know I'll be good? Everyone says I'm a freak, that I'm good for nothing." Mar'i cried out.

"You know how I know, because of this right here. Now you stop crying, smile, and prove every single one of them wrong, because you're strong Mar'i. You get it from me, from Kori, from your father, you're strong." Zatanna said before kissing her forehead.

The girl nodded and wiped her tears away with the back of her hand, a smile now forming on her lips. "I'm only gone for two months, then it's summer break. I'll be back before you know it." she said with a smile that could rival even the brightest of stars. She was a gem, and she was going to do great thing's. With that Mar'i grabbed her luggage and pulled it towards the nearby jet. Her bag was loaded on as she climbed the steps up to the plane's door. "Bye!" she yelled waving her hand before blowing the three of them a kiss. "Come, sit." Bruce said gesturing to the seat in front of him once she was inside the plane.

Bruce was someone she wasn't quite familiar with. Nonetheless she took her seat and stared out the window. She closed her eyes when the plane's engines roared to life. This was her first time on a plane, she wished her parent's were here. "Stop crying, smile, and prove every single one of them wrong." the words rung around in her mind for a couple seconds. She drew in a deep breath and opened her eyes. They were above the clouds by now, she felt like a bird. This was when she became an adult, after all she had to fend for herself now.

The young girl was smarter than she looked. People were never accepting and no matter how nice she was it was never enough. So she was going to become strong just like her mother told her to. She was going to be kind and positive like her mama and protective and resilient like her father. Most importantly she was never going to stoop as low as the bullies.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The dull expression on his face didn't match the storm raging inside of him. It had been two day's since all of his friends met up to surprise Artemis. It was nice to see all of them but he still missed Wendy. She should have been at that table with him, laughing, and telling jokes. Instead she was buried six feet under at some cemetery a couple hours away. Megan was sitting across from him talking about her day. She had a break during classes and wanted to cheer him up.
Megan showed up at his dorm room with two coffees. Sometimes she was too kind to him. Conner knew what she was aspiring to be and honestly he was proud of her. She came a long way from being that crazy drunk party girl from the beginning of the year. "Conner I can leave if you want" she said sincerely. She didn't wish to intrude on him but keeping him social was apparently good for people who were grieving.
Research was one thing she did a lot of now, especially if she didn't know how to deal with certain situations. "No, it's fine I'm listening" he said, truthfully he was far from listening to what she was saying. Conner could care less about her day and what happened in her classes. Currently his mind was consumed in everything that was Wendy. If he didn't break up with Megan in the first place than he wouldn't be feeling this pain right now.
They would still be dating, Wendy wouldn't be dead, and his heart would be far from broken. "Do you want to talk about it? I know it'll make you feel better if you do" she said, a solemn look on her face. Megan was always so thoughtful and calm, she knew what to say when he needed to hear it. He nodded and she finally smiled, even if it was only small and almost non existent. "How was she?" she asked curiously.
"She - she was great, smart, beautiful, and always willing to do stupid things," he paused and took a shaky breath, "- Wendy was just something else y'know?" he said as Megan smiled and nodded.
Once upon a time the two of them did date and hearing what he had to say about Wendy was sort of soul crushing. The pain was still there but it didn't hurt as bad anymore. A part of her still missed him but she wasn't going to get her hopes up. Who said he still wanted to date after this? "She sounded lovely Conner" she said as he nodded and drew in yet another shaky breath. It was hard not to cry when thinking about what they had. Him and Megan had a similar thing, a similar form of love.
He loved them both once upon a time. Now it hurt so much to think about love, love was hurtful and painful to endure. "I miss her" he said after awhile.
"Good, and who was she to you?" Megan asked.
"My - my girlfriend" his eyes were watery now.
"Did you love her?" Megan then asked.
"Yes" he responded before the tears fell from his eyes.
The pain was still there but this helped him cope. He was so grateful for Megan, more than she could ever realize. She reached out and slipped her hand into his giving it a comforting squeeze. "It's okay, I'm here" she whispered as he continued to cry. This hurt, hurt like a thousand knives piercing his heart. Now he understood what Megan must've gone through when they broke up. It didn't take an idiot to see how broken up she was when they did separate.
Wendy Harris was someone he was never going to forget. She was just as important as Megan is. Her death didn't make her any less a part of his life story. "Y'know for now it's going to hurt like hell, I know it will, but soon it will just be a low pain whispered against your heart and through your mind. You'll remember things but you won't cry instead you'll smile at those memories because they'll be so special to you" she whispered, her words were clarity to his chaotic mind.
Everything she said was always so wise and calculated now. "Thanks" he mumbled before pulling his hand away from hers and quickly wiping his tears. "I have my next class in fifteen minutes, I have to go but I'll see you later?" she asked while standing up from her chair. The redhead picked up her backpack and swung it over her shoulder. "Yeah, yeah sure" he said before she smiled softly and headed to the door. As soon as the door shut his head fell into his hands. He sat there quietly, eyes closed as he reminisced about the time he spent with Wendy. These were memories he would cherish forever.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The diner was quiet, she was wiping down empty tables. There was the jingle of a bell that caught her attention. "Welcome to Pauli's diner, how many?" she asked, her voice an octive higher in order to sound happy. Her eyes flickered up once she got the menus in order. "Mommy, please" her daughter whispered, an arm around her neck and tears pooling in her eyes.

"Mistah J" she said in a startled manner.

"Well hello there Harley," he said, eyes almost popping from his head as he looked her up and down, "- table for two please" he finished, his lips turning up into that bone chilling grin.

No one else was in the diner at that point, outside she could see a few men by the front doors. "Sure, right this way" she said, her voice slightly shaky as she spoke. Melody yelped as she was dragged by her hair towards the table. "Why don't you take a seat Harls?" the man said gesturing her to the place in front of him with his gun. She swallowed the lump in her throat and slid into the booth. "Isn't this a nice family reunion? How are ya kiddo?" he asked, arm still wrung tightly around Melody's neck.

The little girl stayed quiet, it looked like she could barely breathe. "It's rude not to answer when your father is asking a question" he growled while pulling hard on her long blonde hair.

"Don't hurt her!" Harley yelled as he backhanded her across the face.

For a moment she sat there looking down at the seat, blood trickling from her split lip onto the blue bench covering. The pain flourished across her face as she brought her hand up to rest against the now forming bruise. Out of the corner of her eye she could see his faded green hair and pale - almost white skin. For so long she had been obeying him like the good little lover she was supposed to be, but then she had Melody.

Everything changed once the child was born. Now all she wanted to do was take her daughter and run away with Pamela. "You wanna know something Mistah J?" she asked as she turned her head to look at the sadistic man. He was unpredictable, psychotic, everything that she wanted to keep Melody away from. "Hey Harley do you have any -" they both looked over to see one of her co-workers stepping out of the kitchen. The woman froze in place, her body going rigid when she saw the situation. "You really, really shouldn't have come out of there" he said before firing the gun.

Melody's cry was muffled when he put his hand firmly over her mouth. The police would undoubtedly be here soon, the chef would have heard the gun shot. "So what Mistah J, you gonna kill me?" she asked, she smiled a shaky yet dangerous smile. He forgot that he taught her many things over the years. "You gonna kill me like you killed that kid?" her hands balled into tight fists underneath the table, nails digging into the palms of her hands.

The man cackled when he heard that, he remembered that day. Melody remembered that as well, they were both there. Harley pleaded for him to let the poor kid go but he didn't care. "Oh are you talking about Jason Todd? Quite an annoying little brat but fun to play with" he said, his face was permanently stuck in a sick grin. That smile of his haunted her in her nightmares. He used to run a wedding store back in Happy Harbor, the place was only a cover. The back of the store was bloody and reeked of death.

Sirens could be heard in the distance, the police were coming. "Looks like the piggies have come to play" he said as he stood up from the booth. Melody was dragged out with him, the barrel of the gun pressed to her head. A couple police cars pulled up front, the men at the door ran off before they could get caught. "You've been busy while I've been gone Harley, I made sure to pay a visit to that pesky little weed of yours" he said, her heart dropped to the pit of her stomach.

In that moment all she could see was red as she picked up the butter knife on the table and lunged at him. The little girl was thrown to the side as the two adults began to wrestle. "I oughta kill you!" Harley yelled as she plunged the butter knife into his shoulder. The man only laughed, boy was he sick in the head. Before he could raise the gun she grabbed a hold of it, the weapon sliding across the floor. Even injured he was a hell of a lot stronger than her. "Do it, do it!" he struggled to get the words out, both her hands were around his neck now.

All she thought about was Pamela and what he could've done to her. This was her fault, all her fault. Outside she heard yelling from a few officers as they tried to get in through the front doors. For the split second she was distracted he reached up and grabbed her. The bloodied butter knife was pulled from his shoulder and pressed against her neck now. "Oh sweet, sweet Harley" he purred into her ear.

"Let my mommy go" Melody said, she held the gun in her small hands.

The young girl stood there, arms and legs shaking in fear. "You let her go, now!" her yell was ear piecing and made Harley wince. He stood up dragging her up to her feet as well. "Go on, shoot me" he said, lips turning up into a grin. There were tears in Melody's big green eyes, her hands were violently shaking now. A shot went off, the gun back firing and falling to the floor. The front doors were broken open as the place flooded with officers. A couple tazers took the maniac down and as soon as the blonde was released from him she ran over to her daughter.

They both crumpled the floor, Harley pulling her close trying to calm her down. She looked back, angered tears falling from her eyes as they watched the officers hand cuff him. "You can't run forever my little minx, you said you'd live for me and this is you living!" he cackled as the officers hauled him off to a patrol car. A familiar officer walked up to them, his face softening as he kneeled down and reached out towards the two shaking messes. "Y'know it's funny, I saved yer girlfriend, my how the tables have turned" she said with a sad laugh.

"What did he want with you two?" he asked.

"Oh it's nothin', just another crazy day in my life. First visit from my murder ex-sweetheart though" she said, her gaze sad and smile even sadder.

Her saddened gaze quickly changed to a look of panic, it was written all over her face. She ran a hand through her hair and looked around feverishly. "Hey, what's wrong?" the officer asked. Harley remembered about Pamela and what that psycho said. She could be hurt or dead. "Send your officers to my girlfriend's house" she said turning to face him. Both of her hands landed on his shoulders, eyes pleading and fearful. "Please, he said he hurt her" she pleaded, fresh tears forming in her wet eyes.

Officer Grayson had seen that same pleading look before, he saw it in his daughter's eyes, his girlfriend's. "Okay, I'll send some over" he said as she sniffled and nodded.

"Thank you" she said before letting him go and going back to soothing her daughter.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Seven days had past ever so slowly since his daughter had left. The silence throughout the apartment was deafening. It was just him and Zatanna now on their own. The ability to speak to his daughter was becoming quite difficult, after all the time was six hours ahead than what it was here. Currently it was ten minutes until twelve, in London it was already six pm. The front door opened, he looked over and smiled fondly as he watched Zatanna hang her jacket up.
The rain had yet to let up. "I think that Mar'i took all the sunshine with her" Zatanna said as she fell onto the sofa next to him. She had hurried home, ran nearly two blocks, just to try and make it for the phone call. "Do you think she'll remember to call?" he asked out of the blue. It was a variable they never planned ahead for. The young girl was pretty furious with them during her last day's in Gotham. Nevertheless when the phone rang minutes later both of them couldn't help but smile like a bunch of idiots. "Hello!" Mar'i sounded unusually cheery.
"Hey sunshine, how was your first week?" Dick asked, he was happy to hear that his daughter was okay.
"Great! I met a girl, we're best friends!" Mar'i yelled through the phone.
The two laughed to hear just how excited she was. Zatanna saw how broken up she was about her and Damian's fight so she was glad she made a new friend. "What's her name?" Zatanna asked. There was another muffled voice in the background before they heard Mar'i and another girl giggle. "Antonia Tabitha Huxley, please to meet you Mr and Mrs. Grayson" the girl's British accent was absolutely adorable. Zatanna became a blushing mess when she was addressed as 'Mrs. Grayson'.
The conversation didn't last quite long, Mar'i had to go to bed. "Antonia sounds nice" Zatanna said trying to make conversation. Dick was in the kitchen making popcorn for their movie night. "I mean I'm glad she's made a friend but it's a Huxley" he said, the couch sinking under his weight when he sat down. Zatanna raised an eyebrow, the name Huxley has never rung a bell for her. Then again Dick knew a lot more because of his time with Bruce than she's ever known. "Please do explain Grayson, I don't see how a little girl could possibly harm our dear Mar'i" she said with a sarcastic laugh.
Truthfully she believed that Mar'i could handle herself. The young girl was strong, smart, and fearless. "Her father, his names Dorian but everyone on the street adresses him as Smiley. He lives in the heart of London which is why he's practically untouchable over here. You name it he's probably done it and I think his darling daughter Antonia is just as rotten as he is" Dick spat out the words like it left a bad taste in his mouth. This was the first time she heard anything like this. Then again he was an officer of the law and knew more than she did about the ins and outs of Gotham City.
She could feel the tell tale signs of worry begin to flourish in her stomach. No matter where they went, no matter how far they travel to try and be safe - trouble always seems to follow them like a shadow. This shadow only seems to get larger and darker as time goes on. Quite frankly she was beginning to become sick of it. When he noticed the silence that followed with what he said he tried to ease the tension by grabbing the remote and nonchalantly stretching his arm over her shoulders. "Sorry about that, I'm not really asterous when it comes to date nights" he apologized as he flipped through the different movie channels.
"Oh so this is date night now?" there was a shimmer of suggestion in her eyes when she spoke.
There was a roll of blue eyes and an incoherent mumbled reply as he chose a movie. Her eyes softened when she saw what film it was, animated film to be more specific. "Tangled, really?" her heart swelled as she turned her head to look up at him. The soft smile on his place eased her worries before he leaned down and pressing a smile filled kiss to her lips. Zatanna was giddy, her excitement didn't ever seem to fizzle out when it came to watching this movie. Her boyfriend, big bad officer Grayson found her absolutely adorable. The movie was long, perhaps too long, and left her half asleep against him.
When he tried to wiggle his arm free from around her she murmured something against his skin. Her face was buried in the crook of his neck, every breath she drew in and out brushed cool air against his skin. "Okay, time for bed rapunzel" he whispered while pressing a kiss to the top of her head. As soon as he lifted her up her right hand immediately latched onto his shirt. One hand fisting the fabric of his sweater while the other rest idly in her lap. The bed is cool when he finally slips in next to her.
Beyond the walls and windows of the room he could hear faint sirens and the hum of car engine's. Gotham never slept, even at the latest of hours. He was lying on his back staring up at the ceiling, he was drawn back to what Mar'i had said earlier. That friend she introduced, Antonia couldn't have been a coincidence could she? The Huxley name was tainted with all sorts of bad. Smiley had his men all of the world doing all sorts of illegal thing's. The man was a criminal mastermind, he's eluded Gotham police for years now.
All thoughts of the afamed criminal vanished when Zatanna's body pressed up against him. She wriggled her herself under his arm to rest her head on his chest. There was a safe feeling when it came to having someone right there. He ran his fingers through her long dark hair, eyes closed as he reminisced about everything that had happened to her. She had been kidnapped, beaten, and almost killed - twice. If one wish of his were to come true, he would make that wish for her to be a real magician. Superpowers were all he thought of as a child.
That way if she was indeed magical she could defend herself if needed. Instead this world was dull and devoid of anything that could have the slightest chance of having a touch of magic. "G'night Zee" he whispered, a tired hum was all he received as a response. One arm was wrapped firmly around her waist while the other was folded under his head.
