Chapter 63

How do you explain to a kid that any grand parent of theirs was dead. Mar'i had been asking recently, there was a family tree project she needed to do for school. Zatanna's parent's were both dead as well as Dick's parents. Bruce didn't count much as a grand parent. Dick found that Bruce felt pity for him more than anything. Sure he was treated like a prince when he lived with him but he was never adopted or anything. Half of the time Bruce was either busy with work or vacationing with some models.

Alfred however was as close to a grandfather figure that Mar'i would get. "What about my other mother's parent's?" she asked batting her peculiar green eyes up at her father. Zatanna was in a class and today, luckily, was his day off. "I actually don't know much about her parent's sunshine" he said as she frowned and looked down at the floor.

He knew how much this project meant to her. Family history was a tragic topic to talk about. They all tried to stray as far from that subject as humanly possible. "Damian sent me a picture of his project, it looks really cool" she said as her father side and crouched down to be at her height.

"Well was Damian's grand parents in the circus, or magicians, or -um whatever Kori's parents are?" he asked as she let out a long sigh.

"He said his grandfather is the head of the demon, what does that mean?" she asked as Dick grimaced.

This was one of the many reasons why he despised that kid. He was too close to his baby girl. Now he was saying stupid thing's like this. What even was a 'head of the demon' anyways? "You sure he's your only friend?" he asked through a forced smile as she giggled and shook her head. "No I have Melody too but she's in the grade below us so we can only hang out at lunch. Damian doesn't seem to like her very much" she said as he rolled his sapphire eyes.

The two of them got to work on her family tree soon after that. While she was sitting at the coffee table glueing things down he hurried off to retrieve an old cardboard box. "What's that?" she asked looking up, her gluing motions stopping, as the box was dropped onto the coffee table. He smiled, he obviously anticipated that she would ask that. "This my lovely daughter is everything I have of mine and Zee's parent's" he said with a proud smile.

While he was first moving Zatanna in she had brought a small box of the things she kept close of her father and mother's. He added it to what he labelled as the family box. For awhile he sat next to her on the floor showing her old photographs and momentous. "-and this is Zitka, she was my best friend during my circus days" he said with a grin plastered to his face.

"Reminiscing eh?" Zatanna asked as the two of them looked back to see her standing by the doorway.

"Yeah! Dad was showing me all of his old photographs of grandma and grandpa. Did you know he used to be in a circus and had an elephant best friend?" she said practically buzzing with joy.

Zatanna joined them on the floor and took out and joined in on the reminiscing. Dick had a way with making thing's seem much more magical than they actually were. The young girl's eyes were as wide as saucers and a permanent smile was glued to her face. "What's this?" she asked reaching in to pull out a rolled up poster. Dick's smile faltered for a moment as he unrolled it. The last Flying Grayson's poster before the accident happened.

This poster was especially made for the event. His parent's along with himself were doing a trapeze act with no net. It all went wrong so fast and soon all he could hear were the loud gasps and the earth shatterin sound of bones breaking against the dusty dirt floor below. "Dick?" Zatanna whispered as he snapped out of his fearful daze. He flashed them both a small reassuring smile. What happened all those years ago still gave him nightmares to this day. He just hoped that Mar'i would never get him, Zatanna, or Kori ripped away from her just like he got his parents ripped away from him.

This was Cassie's last day in Gotham before they headed back to Happy Harbour. He didn't want to have to let go of her again. Her teacher's gave them free time to roam around the north side of Gotham. They had a couple hours to get lunch and shop before heading back to the hotel. "So where to first?" he asked as they walked down the sidewalk hand in hand.

School ended an hour or two ago and he had been following her class around the Gotham museum until they were allowed their free time. For the most part he blended in with her group of people. "It's your city Tim, take me to wherever you please" she said as he smiled and nodded. They walked around until arriving at a diner. This was where he noticed Mar'i and the little demon heading to on Friday's. After much reconnaissance he found out that the milkshakes were the best in Gotham.

They were seated at a booth by the window and waited for the waitress to come over. "Good afternoon, spying on your brother again?" the brunette woman in a forties styled waitress uniform asked. He smiled and shook his head, "No not this time Peggy, I brought my girlfriend though. You have the best milkshakes in Gotham here" he said as she smiled and waved hello to the blonde sitting across from him.

Tim took notice to the two men sitting on the breakfast bar. One of them kept looking back and eyeing Peggy. That's when he noticed that she was wearing red lipstick, she never wore lipstick. "I think that cute little dorky guy over there likes you" Cassie said before seeing her boyfriend's shocked and offended facial expression. The waitress blushed a bright red and looked back only for the young man to look away finding that he's been caught. "What? I can have an opinion" Cassie said as he rolled his eyes.

"We won't distract you from him any longer, how about one strawberry and one chocolate milkshake?" Tim asked with a smirk tugging at his lips.

"Coming right up" Peggy said before scribbling it in her notebook and walking away.

Cassie had a devious idea suddenly pop into her brain. Her boyfriend already knew she had an idea by the crazy look in her eyes. "Cassie no" he said as her smirk turned into a grin.

"Cassie yes" she said before standing up from the booth.

Tim watched as she walked over to the two guys sitting at the breakfast bar. It was that blonde guy oggling Peggy earlier and a brunette sitting next to him. He couldn't hear what Cassie was saying but clearly it was something to do with Peggy. Sometimes she couldn't help but play matchmaker. As Cassie was walking back over after some time, milkshakes in hand, she gave him a wink. The two milkshakes were placed on the table as she slid back into the booth.

"So the blonde guy's name is quite a mystery, but whatever, he clearly likes your waitress friend. So I told him that she thinks he's cute, aren't I so good, anyways he's going to ask her dancing. His friend was pretty quiet though, had a badass looking prosthetic metal arm though, haven't seen any like that before, don't worry I still love you though and just oh my god they're going to be so cute together an-" before she could continue to ramble Tim leaned over the table and pulled her into a kiss.

It had been awhile since they both shared a playful yet proper kiss. He pulled away to see the stunned look on her face. "You were rambling again" he said as she blushed and began to drink her strawberry milkshake nervously. Tim wished they could be in this diner and live in this moment forever. She began to ramble on again about school, body building competitions, and their friend's soon after.

Most of her words were blocked out and instead he just stared at her and nodded every once in awhile. Tim was just so lost in her everything. The way her blue eyes twinkled when she was excited, how engaged she was when telling him stories, and the large smile that always seemed to be on her face. Cassandra Sandsmark was such a wondrous human being. If he could choose to be with any person for the rest of his life it would probably be her. "I love you Cassie" he said as she stopped mid-sentence and smiled one of her brightest smiles yet.

"Love you too Timster" she said the nickname in a teasing tone.

That was Cassandra Sandsmark for you.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The giggles escaping her lips were so nice to hear. Her pigtails bounced around as she was placed through the playground. It wasn't raining for once to recess was outside today. She looked back to see the older girl hot on her tail. The three of them were playing a modified game of tag. The only one not 'it' yet was Melody. When she looked forward a figure jumped down from one of the trees above scaring her half to death.
A loud scream pierced through the air as she was tapped on the shoulder. The boy was a lot taller than her and he looked far from impressed. "You're it" he said, his trademark smirk now gracing his lips. Mar'i, her best friend, gave the boy a high five and congratulated him on the win. "You better start running" Melody said as Mar'i squeaked and grabbed the boy's hand dragging him away.
The three of them ran around the Academy's vast playground. As Melody was running a kid stuck their foot out and tripped her. "Ouch" she said as she laid face first in the dirt.
"Melody!" Mar'i yelled as she ran back over to help her friend up.
The girl was helped up by Mar'i before she was being checked for any injuries. Mar'i was definitely like a big sister to her. The older boy that tripped her snickered at them. "I didn't know the freak show was in town today!" the boy yelled as his friend's all began to laugh in response. Everyone was always so cruel because of how they looked. The scarring on her face was from what that malicious father of her's did.
Damian didn't hesitate to step in front of the two girl's to separate them from the rest of the bullies. "Awe is the ring master here to protect his little circus of freaks?" the older boy taunted. Melody was pulled to her feet before she was dragged away by Mar'i. The two girls ran until they were all the way by the old large willow tree by the fence. She sat down and sucked in as much oxygen as she could to try and regain her lost breath.
The only sounds were their heavy breathing and the distant laughter and chatter of the playground. The blonde only then noticed that she had ripped a hole in her tights where her knee was. Her mother wasn't going to be too happy about that. "Where's Damian?" she asked curiously as she looked over to Mar'i.
"Oh he's fighting all of the bullies for us, Damian's a real superhero y'know" Mar'i said with a smile on her face.
She pulled her knees to her chest and rested her chin upon them. "Why is everyone so mean to us?" she asked in a small voice. That was the only answer she ever wanted. From what she had experienced she only thought that she was treated differently. Then she met Mar'i and Damian, they were just like her. "I don't know" Mar'i finally answered as she mimicked the way Melody sat. Footsteps approached them as Damian walked around the trunk of the tree to find them sitting behind it.
The two girls jumped to their feet and eyed him worriedly. He wiped the blood from his nose with his sleeve before giving the two a toothy smile. "That'll teach those bit-" he began to say before being rudely cut off.
"Language!" Mar'i scolded as he rolled his eyes.
"Whatever" he retorted before the two girls finally attacked him with one giant hug.
He stood there awkwardly and Melody looked up confused. Did he never get hugged as a child? Her mother used to hug her all the time and tell her that "everything is going to be alright baby, he won't hurt you like that again". She only squeezed the two of them tighter. Besides her mother and Ivy, they were the only one's who ever cared about her. "Quit pressing your bodies so close to mind it's weird" Damian said as he squirmed out of their tight grips.
The two girls could only giggle.
Megan was finishing up her nutritions class when the fire alarm went off in the university. Everyone knew there was to be a fire drill today. No one seemed to be against the blaring alarms disrupting their class. Megan was more than happy to quickly pack up her stuff and exit the classroom. It was still a bit chilly when she stepped outside but then again it wasn't quite spring yet.
The snow was still trying to disappear, even the rain hadn't gotten rid of it. The once beautiful white snow was now brown and slushy. "Well hiya dolly" Megan jumped to feel someone tap her shoulder. She turned around to see Peggy standing behind her absolutely beaming. The red head was used to her being addressed as dolly now. It was slang, she doesn't know from where or when but it just kind of stuck. "Someone looks happy" Megan said as the young woman punched her playfully in the shoulder.
"Well of course I got asked out while at work" Peggy said in a hushed voice like this was the most sacred information in the world.
"What's his name?" she whispered in a mock tone.
"That's not for me to tell, the information is useless if it doesn't work out" Peggy said now folding her arms with a smirk on her face.
The two women got along quite well with one another. Their unique fashion sense was definitely something that helped further their friendship. "So when is this date with mystery man?" Megan asked, she was actually quite curious. This was one of those rare times she had seen Peggy so happy. "Tonight, he's taking me dancing" the young woman answered, Megan could practically see the animated hearts in her eyes.
They were now in front of their dormitory ready to head inside. Megan knew a thing or two about helping friends with dates. She used to help Zatanna and Artemis a lot in high school for dates. "Well then you must require my expertise" Megan said as Peggy dramatically put her large red sunglasses on and smiled.
"Oh I know I'll need help" she replied as the two laughed and walked inside.
Music was playing on Peggy's record player in the background as Megan ran around her friend's place. She was rummaging through Peggy's closet and occasionally looked back at her to see what would look better. "Red seems to fit you perfectly" Megan said holding up a beautiful red dress to her friend. She truly did envy all of the stylish clothes that her friend housed in her closet. "I really don't think I should wear this for a first date Meg-" a finger was placed on her lips as Megan shook her head.
As she assisted her friend getting ready for her date she listened to Peggy gush about her mystery man. The way she spoke about him made it seem as if she had known him for years. It reminded Megan of her day's with Conner in high school. Both of them never had a care in the world back then. She thought they would be together forever, get married have kid's. It was the usual white picket fence dream.
Apart of her would always love him, after all he was her first love. Megan had everything planned out to the smallest detail. She would graduate cooking school, open a bakery, get married, and finally have children. But now she wasn't so sure she wanted any of that now.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Gotham University track team was starting up again. It was still pretty chilly but the weather was dry, most of the snow was melted and on the roads. "Seriously Arty I can't" he said, the two of them were walking down one of the many corridors. They were heading towards their Vietnamese lit class. She held the paper advertisement in her hand. It was posted around the entire campus.

Wally was on the track team back in high school and he was pretty damn good from what she's seen. She guessed that it ran in his family. "Why not? I mean all of those science classes are too easy for you, Wally you're brilliant and fast. Wouldn't it be nice to run again? I mean I'm trying to be apart of the archery team right now so why don't you do a sport?" she said, eyes scanning the paper she held in her hands.

She's noticed that Wally was passing most of his classes with flying colours - Vietnamese lit was still a work in progress. "I don't know" he said scratching the back of his head subconsciously. He always did that when he was stuck on a choice. They arrived at the door for the lecture room. The doors would close in a couple minutes so they had time. "Think about it okay? Anh yêu em" she said with a smirk.

"Yêu bạn quá (Love you too)" he said with a wink as he walked past her into the room.

Artemis rolled her eyes and followed him inside to the chatter filled room. She was surprised that he was picking up on the language so fast. Soon he would be able to hear all the things her sister says about him. Jade and Wally were never very fond of each other. "This is so unfair you're fluent in Vietnamese" he said dropping his face into his hands. The lecture had been going on for forty minutes now.

Every minute that went by was pure torture for him. Artemis leaned back in her chair with a smile on her face. The fire alarm suddenly began blaring throughout the lecture hall. "Thank you" he whispered to himself as he shoved everything into his backpack. Perhaps this was just another fire drill? Whispers were going around as they all exited the building.

There was apparently no mention of a fire drill today. "Do you think it's serious?" he asked as she looked up at him and shook her head.

"I mean I don't hear anyone dying so I guess not" she answered as he playfully punched her in the shoulder.

A lot of students began to leave so the two of them jumped on the bandwagon and headed out as well. "What shall we do now my beautiful girlfriend of mine?" he asked batting his lashes at her. The two of them were aimlessly walking around the city now hand in hand. "Let's do something rebellious" she said jokingly. Just when she proposed that an idea popped into his head.

The grin growing on his face really said it all. His grip around her hand tightened as he turned down a quiet side street. "Wally where are we going?" she asked stumbling along behind him and his quick walking pace. The docks came into view minutes later and immediately she began to try and pull her hand away. "Wally no!" she yelled as he shook his head still grinning from ear to ear.

No one seemed to be around at the moment. The water was freezing but a polar bear dip would be nice. "Wallace West we are not jumping in there" she said, they were now at the edge of one of thr rickety docks.

"What, has the rebellious girl from high school vanished?" he asked while throwing his bag to the side and proceeding to pull his shirt off.

If anyone were to catch them surely they would be arrested for public indecency. She looked over the edge chewing on her lip nervously before looking back at him. Why was her boyfriend such a goofball? "Okay how about a deal?" she proposed as he raised an eyebrow at her. It wasn't like her to suddenly be making deals. "You try out for the track team and I will join you in this reckless act of yours" she said as he smirked.

The two exchanged challenging looks between one another before he reached out and shook her hand. "You're on Crock" he said as she threw her bag to the side. When they jumped in the sheer freezing temperature sent shock coursing through both of their bodies. Artemis couldn't help but let out a shriek when she hit the water. For a moment Artemis forgot how to swim entirely. "I hate you so much" she said through gritted teeth as she struggled towards the slimy seaweed covered ladder.

As she was carefully climbing up out of the freezing waves she saw a pair of dark boots. "Arty I'm freezing can you move" Wally asked, the waves brushing up against his waist as he clung to the ladder. Her grey eyes were as wide as saucers as she stared up at the police officer. He must of heard them when she shrieked. "Good afternoon ma'am" he said tipping his hat to her.

The blonde climbed up and quickly pulled her clothes back on with her boyfriend in tow. A pair of silver handcuffs were slapped onto both of them as they were escorted to the police cruiser. "This is the last time I ever talk you into me going anything" she said, eyes narrowed into a deadly glare as Wally let out a sheepish laugh. They were lucky that Oliver had a bloody good lawyer.

Having a baby wasn't such a burden to her anymore. Kaldur knowing and being fully supportive of it was amazing. For the longest time she had been worried that he wouldn't want it. Clearly that was far from the case. "How's my Queen and my princess doing?" he asked coming up behind her and wrapping his arms around her. He didn't even hesitate to rest a hand on her small bump.

The young woman smiled and let out a small laugh as he pressed a kiss to her cheek. So far the only people that knew of her pregnancy were Kaldur and Megan. She turned to Megan when she first got the news. Now that she thought about it she never thanked her for being there. Family and friend's meant the world to Roquette. In the past she was hurt so trust meant everything to her. "How do you know it's not a little prince?" she asked gazing down at the hand resting against her stomach.

The gender could be either one and part of her wanted it to be a surprise but she was also dying to know. Whichever it may be, boy or girl she would love them either way. "Trust me" he said as she turned herself around in his embrace and gave him a kiss. Kaldur was such a down to earth man and she loved him to bits. He loved Roquette more than his own life and would do anything for her and now their baby.

In his eyes she was absolutely radiant and he wanted more than anything for her to feel love. "I'm going to invite Megan over for dinner tonight, do you have any plans?" she asked pulling away from the tender kiss they just shared. Inviting her friend over for dinner would be a nice 'thank you'. "Yes I believe I do have plans tonight my love. I hope you don't mind" he said as she smiled and nodded before kissing the corner of his mouth.

She found herself sitting on the sofa soon after scrolling through her essay on hospital safety. Her phone was beside her as she reached over and dialed Megan's number. "Hey girl how's it going?" she asked when her friend picked up.

"Nothing much. I just finished helping a friend get ready for a date. Is something wrong?" Megan asked in her usual sweet voice.

"Nothing's wrong but Kal had to go out, do you want to come over for dinner?" she asked hearing Megan let out a squeal.

"Of course I'll be there in half an hour!" Megan yelled before abruptly hanging up.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This was their last day in Gotham - well they were actually leaving now. All of them were being loaded back onto the bus to head to Happy Harbour. The two boy's sat next to each other, Jaime on his phone and Bart listening to music while eating some chewy candy. The bus ride back was going to be painfully long to sit through. Jaime held his hand out without looking over and Bart dropped some candy into it.
There was a rule on the bus about no eating but it wasn't being enforced too well. They were also sitting at the back of the bus so no one could really see. "Awe come on Rae" Garfield whined as him and Raven sat in the two seats across the aisle from them. The girl sat next to the window and pulled her hood up and began to read the book in her hands. It was quite evident that she was angry yet again.
Bart glanced out the window to see Cassie still lingering out there with Tim. The two had to say goodbye once again. "How do you two not get angry at each other?" Garfield asked as Jaime looked up from his phone and shrugged. The auburn haired teen next to him grinned and swung his arm around Jaime's shoulders. "We just get each other" he said before popping another candy into his mouth.
The two of them really did understand each other. Garfield and Raven's relationship was like a hot pepper; the idea of it alone was great but when you add it to other food it could be either a really good or really bad idea. Cassie soon entered the bus and took a seat in front of the two boy's. "How's my two most favourite people in the world? No offense Raven and Garfield" she said glancing over to the two sulking teens.
"Don't care" Raven replied dully.
Her arms rested on the back of the seat, she probably should've been sitting down in her seat. "I just want to get back the homework pile I have in my room is about to topple over" Jaime said as she nodded in agreement. Sometimes homework was such a nuisance to do. Bart stayed silent as he stared out the window. The music to his headphones were blaring so loud they could both partially hear it. "Earth to Bart" Cassie said waving her hand in front of his face.
Jaime pulled his headphones off of his head and turned his head to look at Cassie. "What, sorry I wasn't listening" he asked with a sheepish smile on his face.
"What are you listening to anyways?" she asked out of pure curiosity.
"Elvis" he answered as Jaime smiled fondly.
"Elvis, I can dig Elvis" Jaime said as the bus began to finally move.
Thus starting the trek back to Happy Harbour no matter how boring and strenuous the bus ride may be.
Conner laid back in the sofa and stared at the necklaces pendant. Wendy had given it to him a month prior. It had a rustic look to it and quite frankly he thought she was sweet for thinking of him. Once again she had gone out, she went for coffee with a couple of friends. He wasn't controlling, he let her come and go as she pleased.
It was nice not having to constantly be worried or watching over her as if she were a child. That's how it was with Megan. He couldn't lie to himself though, he missed that fiery red head. The two hadn't really talked much since they had broken up. When she was ill he visited her and he's seen her around campus but other than that they didn't talk much. Sometimes his mind would drift off to a simpler time.
University was difficult and quite expensive. It was so much more different when compared to his years in high school. Megan and him were together for years and he questioned if breaking up was really worth it. Sure she was a bit of a loose canon but she seemed to be better now. Wendy was great and he loved her to bits but it wasn't the same. They had only been dating for months while he and Megan had dated for years. It was quite a big difference in time being together.
However he didn't regret ever getting together with Wendy. His phone buzzed as he pulled it out. When he answered the phone he couldn't help but smile to himself. "How's it going?" he asked hearing chatter in the background.
"Mm, nothing much. I mean I'm talking to you now am I not?" Wendy said, he could practically imagine her smiling.
"I'm relaxing, I enjoy the silence without you around" he joked hearing her laugh on the other end of the line.
"I should be back soon so enjoy your silence" she said before hanging up.
Later on she arrived back with two coffees, his was just how he liked it. They both sat on either end of the sofa and sipped their hot drinks while she talked about her day. He never knew Wendy could talk and laugh so much before. "When summer break rolls around we should go do something" she said as he raised an eyebrow watching her sip her coffee. Conner shifted in his spot and eyed her thoughtfully for a moment. "I don't see why not, we can go to the farm again if you want?" he proposed the idea only for her eyes to go wide and her lips to form a grin. "Sure thing farmboy" she said trying hard to stop grinning.
"Yeah, sure thing citygirl" he said lowly before taking another sip of his coffee and relaxing into the sofa.
A/N: Sorry this has taken so long I've been on vacation.
