Chapter 4
It was early when she woke up and began to get ready. Putting on her pink uniform and black heels she grabbed her bag and quickly left the place. "Good morning Zatanna" the old lady in the diner greeted as she nodded back in response. Zatanna was a waitress in Millie's Diner, it wasn't a bad job it was just too bad she had to do this instead of going to school. The sun hadn't even risen yet and it was cloudy outside. "Good morning Ms. Jane" she said as her boss walked over. Zatanna's boss was a little old lady who had the Diner for many years.
Ms. Jane smiled and gave the girl a hug. "Good morning to you to Zatanna" she said as Zee smiled brightly at her. This was her favourite place to be in the entire world right now. Putting her bag in the back she tied the white bow around her neck and tried to smile in the mirror. She was a waitress and knew almost everyone on a first name basis. A woman with her son walked in and took a seat as she walked over. "Good morning Eliana and hello to you to Duncan" she said greeting the two.
The kid always had a dazzling smile as Zatanna ruffled his blonde hair. "The usual I presume?" She asked as Eliana nodded letting Zatanna take the unopened menu's away. The day was quickly moving as she went to sit another person. This guy was an officer working for GCPD hence the uniform. "Welcome to Millie's Diner! I'm Zatanna and today I will be your server" she said in the happiest voice she could muster up. "Hey Zee" the guy said as she looked up to see it was Dick.
Gulping she took him to his seat and waited for him to order. "What do you recommend?" He asked staring up at her with a bright smile on his face. "The Mac and cheese here is great Officer Grayson" she said as he frowned closing the menu. "Ya know I'll be a full fledged officer in thirty days now. You can tell me if something's wrong" he said as she nodded. "I know but nothing's wrong" she said looking down at her little note pad. It had countless order's scribbled in it from the customers she had served earlier. "Oh then I guess I will have the Mac and cheese with a chocolate milkshake" he said as she nodded taking down his order and walking off.
Black heels clicking against the tile floor as she told the chef the new order. Waiting she walked around to see if any other customers needed anything. This feeling of being watched was just burning her as she glanced back to see Dick watching her closely. Sighing she walked back with a fake smile on her face. "Do you need anything Officer?" She asked in an annoyed tone as he smirked. "Just trying to find out a way that you'll tell me that someone is hurting you and don't act dumb Zee I was trained by the world's greatest detective, literally" he said as her blue eyes widened for a second.
Shaking her head she heard the ding of the bell from the kitchen. "Ooh saved by the bell" he said as she walked away trying to keep her emotions in balance. Grabbing his order she walked back and gave it to him. "Is that all you need Officer?" She grit through her teeth as he stared at her with a contemplating look. "Its illegal to lie to an officer when they ask you a question you know" he said as she crossed her arms. "You know its illegal to impersonate an officer? I believe you said you weren't one until thirty days" she said as he frowned.
Watching her walk away he sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose. Her shift was thankfully over and now she had to go to the other side of Gotham to babysit. Changing into a sweater and jeans she got her bag and left. "Need an escort?" He asked as she crossed her arms and glared at him. "No I'm fine" she growled picking up the pace only for him to do the same. "Its a good thing the Police Academy is down there" he said as she rolled her eyes at him. They walked quietly until he began to whistle.
He glanced over to catch a small smile on her face. "Why did you come all the way down here to eat when your class at the Academy is on the other side of Gotham?" She asked curiously. Its not like he decided to eat at that specific place on the other side of Gotham for no reason. "Look Zee I care about you and I don't want you getting hurt okay?" He said in a soft voice as they walked down into the subway station. Why did he have to make things so hard for her? "Thanks for your concern Dick but I'm fine" she said as he glared hard at her.
Then an idea popped into his head. "Then I'm arresting you" he said as her eyes went wide.

This was not a good plan, not a good plan at all. "Kori I don't think you should do this just stay here" she pleaded while . They were driving as Kori was making her way towards Gotham. It would be awhile in the red head wasn't exactly paying attention to the road. It had just started raining which wasn't good either. "Auntie Raven!" the child giggled in the back kicking her car seat. Mar'i was a very smart and strong child and knew a lot of words already. Raven spent a lot of time teaching the child how to speak.
Kori really shouldn't be driving in this weather but she was determined to get to Gotham. Looking forward there was a pair of headlights coming at them quickly. "Kori look out!" She yelled before the car got hit. Screams were heard as her ears began to ring. Everything was black as her eyes lazily opened. Mar'i was crying in the back which was the first thing she noticed. The car must've flipped over as she groaned feeling her head. Painfully reaching for the release button on her buckle she pressed it.
Falling from her seat onto the roof of the car she groaned in pain. "This is so fucked" she said looking at the gas spilling from the car. Shaking her head she looked over at Kori who was not awake. Footsteps and the skidding of a car were heard. "Is everyone okay?" A man asked appearing on Raven's side of the car. She was still in shock as she watched the gas drip onto the ground. Mar'i screams were becoming louder, the child was probably hurt in some way from the crash.
Finally looking over at the man she went to open her mouth. "Shit!" He yelled seeing the gas spilling from the car. "Sweetie you need to get out of the car before it lights on fire, come on" he said holding his hand out to her. Looking back at Mar'i and then to him she shook her head. Crawling through the car to the back she looked up at the two year old who wad hanging from her car seat. "Its okay I got you" she said unbuckling the child and grabbing her. Every part of her body was screaming in pain but she ignored it.
Turning she began to kick the window as hard as she could. A crack was heard as a spiral of cracks appeared on the window. "Come on!" She yelled as her vision in her right eye was becoming red. Wiping the blood from her face she continued to kick it as hard as she could. Finally it shattered as the man ran over and helped her out. "Wait Kori!" She yelled hearing sirens quickly approaching the scene. The rain was not making this any better. This car could burst into flames any second.
Limping over she began to bang on the window of the driver side door. "Kori wake up!" She yelled, tears pooling in her eyes before evidently spilling down her cheeks. Ambulances and police officers arrived on the scene a minute later. "Please someone get her out!" She screamed still banging on the window. Officers ran over and began their work on getting the poor girl out. "Where's Mar'i?" She asked herself looking around to see a paramedic holding the child. Thunder began to shake the sky as flashes of lightning lit it up.
Limping over she still had tears rushing down her cheeks. All of the pain she was feeling was getting to be too much. That's when her vision went blurry and she fainted.

Class was over as she sighed seeing the time. Wally wouldn't be out for another hour and there was no point in waiting for him. Rain started to trickle down from the now darkening sky. "Dammit" she grumbled taking her phone out and texting her boyfriend. Shoving the phone back in her pocket she took her jacket and put it over her head. Running back to apartment even with the jacket over her head she was still drenched. Brucely waddled over with his little tail wagging when she walked in.
After Dick had left yesterday Wally explained the whole fiasco with the dog. It was a really sweet gesture for him to get a dog for her birthday. The small creature followed her into the bedroom as she changed from her wet clothes into pajamas. "Come here baby" she said picking the puppy up and giving it butterfly kisses. "You're just so cute" she said holding the dog while walking into the kitchen. Grabbing a bag of potato chips she went back to the living room and sat on the couch.
Brucely curled up in her lap as she flipped through the channels on the television. "This is such a dumb show but I love it" she gushed putting 'The Bachelorette' on with a grin plastered to her face. She had been making Wally watch it with her lately. He complained that he hated it but he was secretly hooked. How she knew was from the time she was hanging at his house. They were going to watch a movie but he went to the washroom. She went through the recorded shows and they were all of 'The Bachelorette'.
It got a little chilly as she wrapped the throw blanket around her as she got comfy. Lying on her side Brucely wedged himself underneath her arm as she smiled. This dog was just too damn cute for its own good. Just with the television on and her lounging was making her tired. The rain tapping against the large window and the sound of Brucely's adorable sleeping noises made her even more tired. A yawn escaped her lips before steel grey eyes fell closed. Now Wally had just gotten out of class and gotten the text from Artemis.
Rolling his emerald eyes and scoffing. Of course she wanted McDonald's brought home to her. Being the good boyfriend that he is he picked up some food and ran back to the apartment. He had a raincoat on so he didn't get wet and neither did the food. Opening the door he put the food on the kitchen counter and raised an eyebrow. He expected Brucely to waddle over to greet him or something. The sound of the television echoed through the apartment as he walked into the living room.
Smiling to himself he saw Artemis asleep on the couch with Brucely cuddled up with her. Sighing he crouched down and brushed the stray hairs that fell in front of her face behind her ear. "Hey Arty I'm home" he whispered as she groaned pushing his hand away. Bruce's ears perked up as the dog began to bark adorably. "Okay I'm up" she said as the puppy licked her face. Sitting up the blanket was still loosely around her shoulder's as she rubbed her eyes. "What time is it?" She asked with a yawn as Wally smirked.
Standing up she held her hands up to him as Brucely jumped off of her lap and onto the floor. "Can you pull me up?" She asked as he rolled his eyes and pulled her to her feet. "Anyways I brought food" he said as she grinned and gave him a kiss on the cheek. Walking into the kitchen with her blanket still wrapped around her she grabbed her bag of food and drink. "Now we can watch the Bachelorette" she said as he groaned going to get his food as she sat back down on the couch.
He shuffled in and sat next to her as she wrapped some over her blanket around him. "Now since I fell asleep we have to restart the episode" she said staring at the screen. From the corner of her vision she could see a small smile on his face. It was moments like these that she silently thanked the fact that he annoyed her on that first day of school almost three years ago.
