Chapter 30

Zatanna was gone. He let her be taken away again but he couldn't think about that at the moment. There was screaming, it sounded like Mar'i. Everything came rushing back to him as he looked around. Holstering his gun he ran over. Everyone was crowded around them. "What happened?" he asked pushing through. Bruce was on the phone; it sounded like he was calling for an ambulance. Dick did hear that there was a gunshot but he didn't know if it had hit anyone.

The last thing he saw was the two kids going tumbling down the staircase. "Sunshine what happened?" he asked kneeling down. Her back to him as she sobbed holding Damian. "Sunshine please tell me. Are any of you hurt?" he asked as she turned her head look at him. "D-Damian got shot" she sniffled out. The tears looked to be endless as they streamed down her cheeks. "I assure you I'm fine" Damian grit through his teeth.

He was holding his shoulder as blood seeped through his hand. "Your a real trooper kid" Dick said as Damian growled. Mar'i however wouldn't let the poor boy go. "I'm so sorry Dami" she whispered as Dick frowned. Seeing his daughter so distressed was heartbreaking. There were sirens in the distance that were becoming louder. Most likely an ambulance and some police cruisers. "Bruce-" he turned around to see that the older man was gone. Why did everyone have to disappear?

The other thing he kept thinking about was Zatanna. Why wouldn't this man leave her alone? The worst part was that he didn't get to tell her that he loved her. What if John killed her? Dick wouldn't know what to do with himself if that happened. Suddenly medical personnel burst through the front doors. "Daddy please let me go with him" Mar'i cried out. She and a death grip on Damian who looked quite pale. His head resting against her shoulder; emerald eyes lidded.

Dick sighed. He would have to speak to the Commissioner and he didn't know who would watch her. "I can watch her if you want" a voice said as he looked over. Barbara sat in her wheelchair looking up at him. Gordon stood behind her with his eyes narrowed at him. "Yeah, yeah sure" he said running a hand through his hair. "Listen Mar'i this is a friend of mine Barbara Gordon. She's going to take care of you while I find Mommy" he said as she sniffled and nodded.

"Come on Dami we need to get you fixed up" she said shakily getting to her feet.

He hummed in response barely conscious at this point. The poor kid had already lost a lot of blood. He leaned against her as she did her damnest to hold him up. "What happrned here Grayson?" Gordon asked walking over.

"Some man came in and held Mar'i at gun point yelling on about Zatanna. She-she took Mar'i's place and then Mar'i tried to grab her. He fired a shot and it hit Damian in the shoulder. I don't know where he took her though" he said in a shaky voice.

Nervously he ran a hand through his hair. This was something he did when he was nervous and scared. A sick worried feeling was swirling around in his stomach. "Do you know what his full name is?" Gordon asked writing things down in his notepad.

"Um...John-oh John Constantine!" he yelled remembering the name.

Gordon nodded before closing the notepad. Slowly he turned around and walked away. Most likely to go and find Bruce. There were cameras all around Wayne Manor so surely one of them caught a glimpse of his face.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The place definitely was a winter wonderland by the looks of it. They made their way into the farm house. Immediately they were greeted by the smell of pie. Conner couldn't help but lick his lips. If anything he absolutely loved his grandmother's homemade pie. "Conner why don't you go and show Wendy to her room?" Lois asked as he nodded taking the bags from her. "Oh I can carry my bags if you want" Wendy said as he shook his head with a small smile.
Conner may be a country boy but he had proper manners. His grandfather taught him that carrying a ladies bags were proper. It was sort of just drilled into his mind by now. They stairs creaked underneath their feet as they walked up. It was dark but he knew where he was going. Pushing the door open he turned the lights on. It was the guest room which was directly located across the hall from his bedroom. For the longest time he always remembered there being a guest room. The Kent's were kind people always letting strangers stay for a bit. Even some of Clark's friends have stayed from time to time.
The room was small and quaint but it wasn't like Conner's wasn't either. The largest room in the house was his grandmother and grandfather's room. Clark and Lois had a room as well from when they spent Holiday's or weekend's here. "Its so cozy in here, I like it" Wendy said clapping her hands together. He put her bags down as she gave him a small smile. "Conner come and bring your girlfriend down!" his grandmother yelled from downstairs.
Both of their cheeks flushed a bright red as they quickly made their way downstairs. "Hey Grandma" he said giving the old woman a hug. Lois was sitting on the couch reading and Clark was speaking to his grandfather. "You must be Wendy" she said shaking Wendy's hand with a warm smile. He was surprised that his grandparents were still up. It was quite late to still be up on Christmas Eve. "Come and have some pie" she said as the two followed her into the kitchen.
It smelt amazing as they stepped in. Everything was always cooked homemade and to perfection. She cut two slices and placed them onto seperate plates. "Please do take a seat" she said ushering the two of them to sit at the table. Wendy glanced up a him with a small smile gracing her lips. She took a bite out of the pie as her eyes lit up. "Oh my gosh this is amazing!" she exclaimed as he raised an eyebrow.
His grandmother; Martha was quite happy to hear that. After pie the two of them both volunteered to do the dishes that were already in the sink. His grandparents had headed up to bed already. Lois and Clark were cuddled up on the couch watching television in the next room. "You have such a wonderful family Conner" Wendy said as he smiled. It was nice to have someone to keep his mind off of Megan. It seemed like he was clearly replaceable to her. That La'gann guy seemed to have snatched her up already. Conner could trust Wendy and she was genuinely kind.
"So what are we doing tomorrow farmboy?" she asked dragging out the new nickname.
"Well I need to feed the animals in the barn and do some other chores. Care to help city girl?" he asked with a smirk on his face.
She playfully rolled her eyes at the nickname he just created on the spot. "I may be a city girl but I know a thing or two about animals" she said with a smirk. The two of them finished up the dishes and by then she was falling asleep once again. "I think I'm going to head up to bed, goodnight" she said whilst yawning. He watched her leave before walking into the living room. Just beyond the window he could see that it was snowing again. So far this Christmas didn't suck as bad as he thought it would.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
They walked into the nearly deserted restaurant. A waitress walked over with a smile and seated them. Her Uncle had given them money to get dinner after they helped at the Church. Of course the only places open on Christmas Eve really were Chinese restaurants. But they didn't mind, in fact Megan practically lived off of ramen noodles. Gar sat next to Raven with his head resting against her shoulder.

A small smile formed against Megan's lips to see this. Part of her was happy that he was growing up but another part of her was sad. Garfield wasn't as young anymore. He had a girlfriend for crying out loud! "How do you put up with him?" Megan asked as Raven glanced up from the menu. Megan was just curious because she's lived with Gar for a long time. "Lot's and lot's of patience" Raven answered as Megan gave her a small smile. The waitress came over but they all just ordered something small. Gar was falling asleep against Raven giving the girls time to talk.

"So what happened to your parents? If you don't mind me asking" she said as Raven froze.

"No comment" the girl said looking down.

It must be a sore subject for her. After all Megan could partially relate. Talking about her old family was a tough subject. "Well, how did you end up at the house with Gar?" Megan asked as Raven continued to sink into the booth. "No comment" she said again as Megan sighed.

"Hey, we're like sister's now okay? You can tell me anything, I won't judge" Megan said in a calm voice.

Raven stayed quiet as the waitress came over and gave them their food. It wasn't a lot as Raven gently shook Gar awake. His vibrant green eyes fluttering open as he looked around. "Hmm? We're still here?" he asked looking around. His eyes fell onto the food as a smile crept onto his face. "Is it still Christmas?" he asked as Megan let out a light laugh and nodded. For the most part Raven was quiet as Megan and Garfield chatted away.

They finished eating and decided to head back to the Hotel. All of them felt tired and sluggish. They had done a lot tonight. Raven was still dead silent the entire walk back. Luckily her Uncle J'ohnn was done with what he was doing earlier. Raven went to go wash up as Megan pulled her brother to the side. Gar gave his older sister a confused look. "Hey do you know what's wrong with Raven? I asked her about her parents and how she got to staying with us but she didn't answer" Megan said as his face fell.

That made her worried all of a sudden. Did she do something wrong to make the girl upset? "I'll uh go talk to her. She get's a little touchy on those subjects but she'll be fine in the morning. Merry Christmas by the way and don't snore because gosh I could hear you all night!" he exclaimed as Megan rolled her eyes and ruffled his blond hair. He was definitely something else.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
He walked away from his sister and into one of the rooms. The Hotel suite only had three rooms in it. To this day he still didn't know what his Uncle J'ohnn did for a living. Clearly it was something well paid if they could be in a suite this big for this amount of time. He stretched his arms out before yawning. Raven was already in bed with her back to him. Since there were only three rooms they had to share a bed. They weren't bothered by it though.
Sometimes they share a bed back at home. She would sneak into his room or vice versa if they both had nightmares. Some nights they wouldn't even say anything. Raven never went into detail about what her's were about. If he really thought about it he didn't know a lot about her. But he knew enough to know that he cared for her and loved her. Changing into his pajamas he climbed into the comfy bed. He knew she wasn't asleep when she shifted around. "Rae?" he whispered gently poking her in the back.
"Rae?" he asked again but she stayed silent.
"Just go to sleep Gar" she said as he sighed.
He pulled his hand away from her and sighed. Sitting up he gently leaned down and kissed the side of her head. Lying back down he reached over and turned the lamp off. The room was engulfed in a silence as he rolled over; his back now facing her. Outside the snow fell gently as he stared out at it. Another yawn escaped his lips as his eyes began to droop yet again. Just as he began to fall asleep he felt someone latch onto him.
Raven was holding him close with her arms wrapped around him. Their legs were intertwined as he sighed. She pressed her face into the back of his shirt. This just comforted her sometimes and she didn't know why. Maybe it was the feeling of being safe? Of holding onto something that she knows won't go away. "Love ya Rae" he whispered before hearing her mumble a reply.
A smirk gracing his lips as he grabbed her hand that was draped over him. Intertwining their fingers as she blushed. He loved her for so many things that she didn't even know. Maybe it was because they were like Ying and Yang? Their friends back in Happy Harbor compare them to that a lot. Especially Cassie who is apparently a relationship expert. Nevertheless he finally settled down as his eyes fell closed. Drifting off into the place that could only hold potential dreams or nightmares.
A/N: Sorry I had to do a BBRAE part cause I love those two. Something huge will be coming up in the Aquarocket and Spitfire areas soon. We all know Chalant is like a never ending drama train but soon they'll get a break. I mean I have to damage more relationships people!!!! XD
