Chapter 28

A/N: I'm doing a small Damian and Mar'i part because I love these two dorks.

She held onto her mother's hand tightly as she dragged her through the crowd of people. Some of the guests were giving her weird looks and she had her to understand why. "Excuse me" she said weaving through groups of people. "Mar'i slow down!" Zatanna said whilst laughing. The little girl was so eager to find Damian. Her eyes scanned the filled room until she spotted something move at the top of the staircase. Narrowing her eyes she noticed that it was a person. "I found Damian mommy, see he's up there" she said pointing to the figure sitting on the top step. The lights were off up there making it harder to see the person.

Looking back at her mother she noticed a man looking straight at her from behind. A twisted smile on his face as he lifted the champagne glass to his lips. A chill ran down her spine as she stared at him. "Mommy" she said tearing her eyes away from the scary man. Zatanna raised an eyebrow at the girl. It looked like she had just seen a ghost. Mar'i's eyes darted back over to see that the man was now gone. "I'm going to go with Damian and play for a bit" she said as Zatanna nodded kissing the top of her head.

"If you need anything look for one of us and stay with Damian" she said as Mar'i nodded.

"I will Mommy" Mar'i said with a small smile.

With that she turned around and skipped towards the stairs. Her light pink dress swishing around her as she moved. People were staring at her, some giving her disgusted looks. Grabbing onto the railing she began to climb the steps. The further up she got the quieter it became. "Damian?" she asked in a small voice. It was quite dark but she could just make out a shadowy figure. However they didn't respond to her. "Hello? Damian this isn't funny" she said in a shaky voice.

The figure stepped towards her as she stepped backwards. "D-Damian?" she stuttered out, fear dripping from her voice. The chills ran down her spine once again. Whoever it was kept advancing towards her. She stumbled back tripping on her skirt as she fell over. Landing on her bottom her arms went back to brace her. "No offense love but there's a pretty girl in here that needs my attention" the man said, a slight British and Welsh accent mixed together. He grabbed her by her shoulder yanking her up. Pulling her back to his chest as he pressed the barrel of a gun to her temple.

Tears welled in her eyes as he put his arm around her neck. Yanking her down the hallway with him. Mar'i stumbled over her own feet as they walked back to the staircases landing. At first no one noticed as he raised the gun up and fired a bullet. Everyone screamed as they crouched down covering their heads. The cold barrel was then placed back at the side of her head. She trembled in fear as her legs began to shake. There were fast footsteps as Dick and Zatanna stopped at the bottom of the staircase.

"Why hello love" the man said with a smirk.

There was a clicking noise as Dick held a gun up towards him. The grip around Mar'i's neck tightened as she yelped. "I wouldn't do that mate. Not unless you want this staircase to be redecorated with her brains" he said as Dick growled reluctantly lowering the gun. Tears began to roll down her cheeks as she tried to pry his arm away from around her neck. "Mommy" she said, her voice cracked when she spoke. Some people were beginning to slip out of the Manor and leave. "Please John don't hurt her" Zatanna pleaded, tears clouding in her blue eyes.

"Then we'll make a trade. You for the girl" he said as Mar'i began shaking her head.

"Zee don't" Dick warned.

"O-okay just please don't hurt her" Zatanna said slowly walking up the steps towards them.

Out of her peripheral vision Mar'i could see a figure hiding in the shadows. "Mister please don't take my Mommy" Mar'i said as he glared at her. Zatanna stood in a front of them as she looked down at Mar'i. Her eyes darted over to the figure in the corner. "Let her go" the voice said as Mar'i's eyes lit up. That voice, it belonged to Damian. "I wouldn't do that pip-squeak" he warned as Damian scoffed.

"Your a bad man with a gun pointed to a girl's head" Damian said narrowing his eyes at the man.

"I'm far from being bad mate. In fact I'm on the side of the angels" he said as Damian rolled his eyes.

"Like hell" Damian growled.

He moved as fast as lighting as he pushed Mar'i into Damian and grabbed Zatanna. She watched as the gun was now placed against her mother's head. "Mommy no!" she yelled as Damian held her back. Slowly he began walking down the stairs. A tight grip on her mother as tears fell from her eyes. Somehow she managed to escape Damian's grip. Mar'i went lunging at him as a fire from the gun rang out. Someone grabbed her as they went tumbling down the stairs. There was screaming and everything was becoming a little blurry.

The ride back to Happy Harbor wasn't as bad as he had thought it would be. In fact the train ride there was quite soothing. That and the fact that Wendy Harris tagged along. There weren't any flights left that she could take to go home. So instead Conner invited her to come along with him to the farm. At first she was unsure if it were an intrusion to go but he eventually convinced her to go with him. "So what kind of farm is it?" she asked while staring out the window. The scenery outside sped past from the high speed that the train was traveling at.

He raised an eyebrow at her weird question. What did she mean what kind of farm was it? "A farm" he said plainly as she turned her head to look at him. Playfully she punched him in the shoulder. "First of all I mean like is it a dairy farm, tree farm-" he cut her off.

"Agricultural, we grow organic produce" he said as she crossed her arms.

"You didn't let me finish" she said as he rolled his eyes at her.

It took a moment before she began to laugh. She was laughing so hard that she accidentally snorted. Conner's eyes went wide as her cheeks flushed a bright red. Her hands covering her mouth as she looked at his face. "Was that too weird?" she asked as he shook his head. A ghost of a smile playing against his lips. The conductors voice boomed over the speakers throughout the cabin. However they couldn't understand a word he said.

Could anyone really understand a conductors voice for anything train wise anyways? "What?" he asked staring at the speaker embedded into the wall. "I think he said something like we're almost here" she said as Conner sighed. Clearly Wendy wasn't right because it took another hour until they arrived in Happy Harbor. It was pitch black outside as the train slowed to a stop at the station. Poor Wendy was leaning agaisnt the window fast asleep. He stared at her for a moment before reluctantly poking her.

Slowly her sky blue eyes fluttered open as she sat up. A piece of dark hair caught in her mouth. He tried not to laugh but ended up failing. Conner hadn't laughed like he just did in months. Everything in his life just seemed so repetitive and boring. That was until Wendy showed up and started bothering him. She helped him get over Megan quite quickly. Wendy was actually quite comforting when she heard the news about the break up.

He stood up and opened the compartment above their seats. The only bag really was his school bag and her small suitcase. Conner still had clothes in his bedroom at the farm. Throwing his bag over his shoulder he took her suitcase. "Conner you don't have to do that" she said as he shook his head. Her eyes were barely opened as he guided her off the train. The bitter cold air hit him hard. For a moment he stood there out of shock that it was so cold outside. Plus, there was barely any snow around. But this was closer to the main area of Happy Harbor. The farm was located a couple kilometers away from the center of the City.

Usually there would be some snow there. They left the station as he saw two familiar people waiting for them at the front. Clark and Lois standing in their winter jackets. The car parked behind them right next to the sidewalk. "Conner" Lois said giving him a hug. She then looked at Wendy as the girl gave her a smile. "Wendy Harris nice to meet you Ma'am" Wendy said as Lois laughed.

"Oh please just call me Lois" she said as Wendy nodded.

The suitcase and his bag were loaded into the trunk. Climbing into the back of the car they sat next to each other. Their frosty breaths dancing through the air as she rubbed her hands together. "Clark please put some heat on" Lois said shutting her passenger side door shut. The radio turned on as soon as the car started. Every now again it would go static before returning back to normal. "So how do you two know each other?" Lois asked curiously.

"We're friends" the two of them said at the same time.

Lois and Clark both let out light laughs at this. The rest of the ride was a grilling session for Conner. It was question after question after question. The car turned down a dark bumpy road. In the distance the house was lit up. Snow covered the flattened fields as they drove by. Clark parked the car in the driveway as they all got out. "Conner your home is so pretty" Wendy said looking around in amazement. Even though it was dark the moon reflected off of the snow. It was like a winter wonderland.

The place was filled with light as she smiled to herself. She couldn't have thought of any better thing to do on Christmas. Garfield and Raven were helping out as well. Her Uncle J'ohnn had a business call to make. Since it was Christmas Eve Megan decided to do something nice. As of now she was currently sitting in a Church. The snow was falling outside gracefully. That was something that didn't happen very often in Gotham. Everything that they did was usually on Christmas day.

She didn't mind spending Christmas Eve reading stories to the Orphans. The local Church in the area held a Christmas dinner for all of the kid's at the local Orphanage. There were plenty of them in Gotham all spread out. This one just happened to be the closest to the hotel. Garfield and Raven were over in the play area with the smaller kids. She sat up straight, book in hand as she smiled. She was finishing off one of the last Christmas stories; 'Twas the Night Before Christmas. Some of the kid's were asleep already while others listened in a trance.

Bright smiles on their faces as the story slowly came to a close. It was late already as the decorations twinkled in the many candles that were lit. "Can we hear another?" one of the kid's asked. He looked to be about ten, messy red hair and the brightest green eyes. Megan frowned as she looked over at the director. They were the one who orchestrated this whole activity. The lady gave a small nod as Megan smiled. There weren't any stories left so she had to improvise.

"This is called: The Girl's one Christmas Wish" Megan said as the kid's all smiled.

"There was a girl who lived on an island far away. Her family used to favourite all of her brother's and sister's over her. One day on Christmas Eve she stared out the window up at the stars. There was a twinkling star that suddenly shot across the sky. Putting her hands together she then closed her eyes. "Dear Santa Claus, if you can grant my wish please take me somewhere so I can make friends, where I can have a family" Megan stopped for a moment and took a deep breath.

This story was coming directly from her heart and soul. For she used to be this little girl. Stranded on a small island that was barely recognisable on the World Map. Staring up at the stars and wishing that she could fit in or even get a new family and friends. "What happened to the girl?" a little girl asked curiously.

"Well one day a boat arrived on the island. Her family went to go and greet the person as she stayed behind waiting. That man turned out to be her Uncle. He was a very kind man who she grew fond of. The day when he had to go back she panicked. That night she looked up at the stars with a worried smile. "Did you hear my wish Santa?" she asked looking at the twinkling stars. During the night she snuck out and onto the boat. For the girl had never been on one before" Megan continued to say.

Out of the corner of her eye she could see Garfield and Raven watching intently. Megan had never really gone into detail with him about how she got to America. But with every word in the story she spoke was out of pure truth. "That day she had done many tiring activites and ended up drifting to sleep underneath the covers. When she awoke she noticed that she was in a new place. Her Uncle was there giving her a worried smile. But he didn't ask for her to be sent back. That night she looked out at the stars. "Thank you Santa for granting my Christmas wish" she said as her eyes scanned the snowy area outside. For she had gained a new family and soon to gain new friends in the time to come" Megan finished the story with a warm smile.

A couple of the kid's clapped happily with the happiest smiles on their faces. The supervisor walked over as Megan carefully stood up. She was still in some pain even now. "Thank you. Everyone say thank you to Miss Morse, Mister Logan, and Miss Roth for helping out today! Also thank the Church and its cooks!" the supervisor exclaimed as all of the kid's said 'thank you' to them. Megan walked over to Garfield and Raven. All three of them had traditional Christmas hat's on. The bright red with the white puff ball and fluffy white rim.

They slipped their jackets on and left the Church waving goodbye. This was an annual thing that her and Garfield did. Even when she was still in High school back in Happy Harbor. Every Christmas Eve they would help out at the local Church. This year Raven tagged along with them. "So Raven how did you like helping out?" Megan asked as the cold air brushed against her face. The tips of her nose and ears beginning to turn a rosy red. "It was okay" she said with a small smile.

"Hey Megan, if you didn't come to America then would we have met?" Garfield asked curiously.

"Yeah Gar I think we would have" she said pulling the two teens into a side hug.

"Now I'm pretty sure Uncle J'ohnn is still on his business call. So how about we head to a Chinese restaurant and grab some dinner?" she then asked as Garfield and Raven nodded.

So that's what they did. They headed towards the nearest Chinese restaurant for dinner. The snow was still falling and it wasn't as cold as it should've felt. She couldn't have asked for a better Christmas Eve even if she tried to.
