Chapter 20

She got there to class just on time as she slid into her seat. The sound of chalk tapping against the board. It was Vietnamese lit class. Eyes trained on the door waiting for him to come in. It silently opened as someone else walked into the class. With a roll of her eyes she turned her attention to the board. He was probably late again like he always was. The chair beside her making an ear piercing screech as it was pulled out.

Tapping her fingers against the desk she waited for her red headed boyfriend. "So how is it good looking?" the guy asked as she rolled her steel grey eyes. Glancing to the side she gave him a disgusted look. It was Cameron and he's been hounding her for the past month. A smirk playing against his thin lips. "Oh fuck off Cam" she said as he grinned. A couple minutes later the door opened as Wally walked in.

He looked grumpy and embarrassed. This teacher was more forgiving to him other than his Physics teacher. His emerald eyes locked on to Cameron glaring holes into the back of his head. It was a lecture today about the history of Vietnam. Her notepad was out as she waited with pencil in hand. "So you have anywhere to be later?" Cameron asked as she sent a sharp glare towards him.

Wally sat up behind her leaning over the desk and reaching down to play with her hair. "I have a boyfriend Cam" she said with her arms crossed. The feeling of Wally tugging on her hair tying it into a braid. "Hair tie" Wally whispered as she slid it off of her wrist and passed it back to him. He finished it just in time when the class started. "So can I like take you for a drink later?" Cameron asked as she gave him a stupid look. Did he really not get that she had a boyfriend?

"No" she said sternly as he leaned against his hand staring at her.

"Awe come on babe" he cooed going to carress her face as she caught his hand.

This was going to far and she didn't want him anywhere near her. Standing up the class immediately turned to face her. "Miss Crock is something wrong?" the teacher asked fixing her glasses. She pointed to Cameron with a disgusted look. "Move him before I call the cops because he's harassing me" she said as the teacher furrowed her brows. Her name was Miss Su and she was from Vietnam. Artemis and her got along well. Miss Su was a short old lady and never tolerated any type of disrespect.

Most of the students here had a high respect for Miss Su. "Leave this class right now young man!" she yelled; accent thick as it laced with every word. There were only two other students in this class who were fluent in Vietnamese like Artemis. She didn't know them very well but she has said hello once or twice. Cameron grumbled grabbing his stuff and standing up. "You can't resist me forever" he said with a wink sending shivers through her body.

When he was out of sight she felt a weight lifting off of her. Sitting back down she gave Miss Su a smile. When she first got this class her and the teacher got along well. The old lady was almost like her second mother. Turning back Wally gave her a comforting smile. She smiled back before the lecture continued. Eyes glancing up to look down at the board.

Unlike all of her other classes Miss Su preferred doing things the old fashioned way. Technology was just too confusing for her to work with. During the middle of the lecture the aspirin was beginning to wear off. An irrotating pain thumping in her head as she rubbed her temple. When class ended she stayed behind with Wally. "
Artemis thân yêu , bạn có thể đến đây một lúc ? (Artemis dear, can you come here for a moment?)" Miss Su asked as the blonde walked down the stairs.

Wally followed slightly confused, he picked up on some words but not all of them. Artemis had been trying to teach him some basic words in their spare time. "Bạn có muốn tôi nói chuyện với hiệu trưởng về điều này? (Do you want me to speak to the headmaster about this?)" she asked as Artemis shook her head. It wasn't that big of a deal where the head needed to get involved. She touched her head trying to soothe her irritating headache.

The sound of something shaking was heard as Miss Su pulled out a bottle of Advil. "Bạn không nên làm hỏng cuộc sống của bạn với yêu rượu. Cầm lấy cái này nó sẽ làm dịu cơn đau đầu (You shouldn't ruin your life with alcohol dear. Take these it will soothe the headache)" Miss Su said handing her some Advil. Artemis popped the pills swallowing them as she smiled softly.

"Cho tôi biết (Thank you)" she said with a smile.

"Your welcome now go and have fun being young! It won't last forever soom you will have wrinkles like me" Miss Su said with a light laugh patting Artemis' shoulder.

Wally and her left class hand in hand as they walked through the halls. He was done with his classes for the day as she had one more. "So what were you talking about?" he asked running a hand through his hair. She rolled her eyes letting out a soft laugh. "It was nothing Baywatch" she said as he raised an eyebrow. It had been a long time since she called him that. "You and Miss Su seem to get along well" he said as she nodded looking out the windows as they walked passed.

White snowflakes danced in the air as they glided towards the cold ground. "She's like a second mother to me" she said as he nodded. A kiss was pressed to the side of her head as she blushed. The heat rising up to her cheeks turning them bright red. "Well my next class is in an hour want dinner?" she asked as he nodded draping his arm around her shoulders.

They decided to split up in the mall to get the shopping done faster. She walked around with the sunglasses providing a shield for her sensitive eyes. The little girl tugging on her hand as they walked past a toy store. "Mommy can we go in there?" she asked with her small sunglasses on as well. It was super busy because people were starting up on their Christmas shopping. "Sorry baby we can't but maybe later. You and I need to go shopping for school" she said as Mar'i let out a long sigh.

They walked into many stores picking out various things. Looking at the list she slid her glasses down to see better. "Bags or backpacks" she mumbled to herself. Glancing back up she looked around seeing that Mar'i was gone. All colour draining from her face she began to look around. "Mar'i?" she asked looking around the store. Now she was starting to get worried what if she got snatched up?

Running up to the security booth her heart was beating through her chest. Hand tightly gripping the edge of the counter turning her knuckles white. "Please my daughter she's gone missing" she said huffing and puffing. The security guard tried to calm her down the best her could. "What does she look like Ma'am?" he asked as tears began to stream down her cheeks. She felt awful as she held back her sobs.

"She's light skinned with the waviest dark hair and the most beautiful emerald eyes. She was wearing blue jeans and a purple winter jacket with a white bow going across the stomach. She's also wearing black sunglasses to cover up her eyes. Her name is Mar'i Grayson so please, please find her" she begged as the tears kept streaming down her cheeks.

"We'll do what we can Ma'am just stay calm" he said as she wiped her tears.

Taking out her phone she began to shakily text Dick. Within a minute or two he was rushing over to her. "What happened and where's Mar'i?" he asked in a worried tone. That only made her cry even harder. "I-I was looking at the list and when I looked up she w-was gone" she cried out as he pulled her to her chest. In situations like these he had to stay calm. Even if he felt like screaming on the inside.

"We're going to look around too" he said as him and Zatanna walked away.

"We should stay together. Who knows they could only be targeting me specifically by taking both of you" he said as she nodded.

They walked through the crowds of people until something caught her eye. There was a tall burly man walking towards the doors. A child wrapped up in a blanket in his arms. At first look it just looked like he was carrying his sleeping child. But Zatanna knew those specially designed boots anywhere. They had gone shopping for some new clothes for Mar'i.

Fortunately, being who he was he was given many things and knew a lot of people. Mar'i got one of a kind winter boots that were black with purple glittery stripes and pom-poms. "He has her" she said pointing to the man who was getting awfully close to the exit. Dick growled taking out his badge from his pocket. "Hey over here!" he yelled out to some of the security guards who were looking around.

Running forward he followed the man. The man looked back and he had a strange face. It was covered in stitched up scars and overall he made chills run down Dick's spine. Like any kidnapper he started running. Dick growled picking up the pace watching as the man left the mall. Zatanna followed in suit and when she walked outside she saw Dick's face fall. A white van that had the name 'Pretty Dolls Parlor' on the side. It was faded as smudges of pink ran down the side of the van.

"Fuck!" he yelled throwing his badge to the pavement.

"We're going to put an Amber Alert out right away and send the description of the van to the Police Department" one of the security guards said.

Dick fell to his knees as tears began to stream down his cheeks. Zatanna crouched down in front of him with a sad smile on her face. "We'll get her back Dick" she said softly as he looked up at her. Tears making his blue eyes look glazed. "What good am I a cop if I can't even stop my own daughter from getting kidnapped?" he asked as she held his face in her hands.

A smile plastered on her face as tears began to stream down again. She wasn't Mar'i's biological mother by any means but she still loved her. Having her 'daughter' ripped away from her like that was like having someone stab your heart with a thousand knives. It was pure agony but she was fighting through the pain. If Dick couldn't be strong now then she had to be.

His tears were hitting her cold hands as the snow fell around them. "Listen we'll find her" she whispered resting her forehead against his. The pain he was feeling as well was starting to become unbearable. "Remember when Artemis's Dad shot me in the chest?" he sniffled out as she nodded remembering that day clearly.

"I thought that was the most pain I've ever been in but I was wrong. This hurts more" his voice was a mere whisper towards the end.

"I know" she whispered.

Closing her eyes as she bit her lip. He stood up and wiped his tears pulling her to her feet as well. "Come on we have to go to the station" he said as she nodded picking up the few bags they had bought.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Her head hurt as she sat in the class. It was a test that their teacher had given them on the human body. Leg shaking impatiently as she scribbled down the answers. The lights in the room practically blinding her every time she looked up. The girl next to her had a nervous look on her face. By the looks of it she clearly hadn't studied. Even if she was passed out drunk the time she got home last night she knew everything.
Being a doctor was Roquette's dream job to have. Ever since she had started High School she would memorize things like these. It would've been easier to write stuff down if her head didn't feel like it was about to split in half. The painful sensation crawling around the back of her skull. Flipping to the next page she sighed seeing it to be multiple choice.
Putting the pencil down she shook her hand out to try and make the aching feeling go away. Glancing over at the clock on the wall she internally groaned. The test had been lasting for over an hour now. This was Biology class and the test was on human anatomy. She did not feel the greatest but she had to push through it. Every time someone finished and stood up to hand it in gave her anxiety.
The fact that people were finishing before her and leaving was scary. "One hour left!" her teacher yelled adding to the anxiety build up. The girl next to her looked like she was about to faint. Finally, looking down at the multiple choice she scanned the questions. Most of them were simple enough for her. Flipping to the next page it had the last question on it. An essay was needed and it had to fill up the next two pages. Internally cursing she began to scribble things down.
Eyes trained on the paper as she wrote down her thoughts about the human body. Adding some comparisons between the male and female body. Some differences between a child and adult. Nearing the end her hand felt like it was going to giver out. Finishing she slammed her pencil down earning some quick looks from other students. Fixing the pages she put her things away and stood up with the test.
"I trust you did well Mrs. Ahm" her teacher said taking the test.
"I hope I did" she muttered before turning around and leaving.
Hearing her last name again made her mind think. A small smile playing against her lips. She remembered when her and Kaldur were deciding on who was to take who's last name. In the end she took his no matter how funny it sounded.
She didn't want to be related to her family any longer.
