(11) school fights
Renchoku Girls' Junior High was an innocuous looking school. To Hitomi, the school looked like it was straight out of a TV show. It looked so normal that even being here was making her feel extremely out of place. And being here while guarding the Star Plasma Vessel? That was making her extremely nervous. Hitomi did not let that show though, letting a neutral look remain on her face as she waited for Gojo to finish a call with Yaga-sensei.
"Huh?!" Gojo exclaimed in surprise, catching Hitomi's attention. Since she stood near him, she moved a little closer to try and listen to more of the conversation. She could barely hear their teacher's voice, but her curiosity wouldn't be satiated without listening to the call.
"Tch!" Gojo clicked his tongue as he hung up, frowning deeply. "Lax upbringing at its finest!"
"Don't be like that, Satoru," Geto reprimanded him. "Despite what she may say, after the assimilation, she'll spend her whole life as Tengen-sama in the deepest floor of Jujutsu High, as the foundation of all barriers. She won't be able to see her friends, family or anyone precious to her ever again."
"She's still a kid," Hitomi added, staring at the school building. "Just let her enjoy herself for now."
All of a sudden, Kuroi stepped up and bowed to them. "Riko-sama has no family. They were in an accident when she was little. I've taken care of her ever since then. So I want her to have what time she can with her friends."
"So you're her family, then," Geto smiled warmly.
Almost teary-eyed, Kuroi nodded. "Yes."
"Suguru," Gojo asked. "How're the cursed spirits you sent to watch over her?"
"Right," Geto said. "I just wish I could share my senses with them like Mei-san does. Even so, they'll let us know as soon as anything unusual happens."
Suddenly Geto looked extremely serious. "Satoru, Hitomi. We have to get to Riko now. Two have already been exorcized."
Hitomi's instincts had already been kicked into overdrive. Riko had to be kept safe. She deserved that. They ran down one of the many corridors that were spread across the school.
"Where's Amanai?" Gojo asked.
"It's time for her music class now," Kuroi quickly explained. "So either the music room or the chapel."
"The chapel?" Hitomi voiced out loud.
"It's a missionary school," Kuroi answered. "And it depends on the teacher where the class will be."
"Satoru, you and Hitomi take the chapel. Kuroi, the music room," Geto stated. "I'll take on the two intruders."
"Got it!" Kuroi said, looking very determined. The quartet split into two, with Geto going the other way and Hitomi, Gojo and Kuroi the opposite.
"Tch," Gojo looked like he wanted to curse. "That's why I told her to let us stay close. That brat!"
"I'm sorry," Kuroi instantly apologised. "I even told her to keep us updated with texts."
Hitomi couldn't help but remember the scene Riko had made earlier, flat out refusing to have Gojo or Geto around to guard her. It should have been her, she realized with a pang in her heart. She should have insisted a little bit more on being the one to guard Riko. With her, the girl might have been less hesitant. But that possibility was long gone.
It should have been her, she realized with a pang in her heart. She should have insisted on being the one guarding the girl. With her, Riko might have been less hesitant. But that possibility was long gone. With a quick nod towards Kuroi, Gojo and Hitomi ran towards the chapel.
"You finally see how stubborn that brat is?" Gojo asked in an I-told-you-so manner, one which immediately grated on her nerves.
"She may be a stubborn kid," Hitomi answered. "But that's what she is. A kid. Let's focus on protecting her and keeping her safe from these intruders."
"Tch," Gojo made a face. "You're so..."
Hitomi shot him a glare."Finish that sentence and I don't care if we are trying to protect someone, I will destroy you."
As Gojo shook his head at her, they arrived at the church entrance. Without any warning or without even bothering to knock, he threw the doors open and yelled out, in a voice that was too loud, "Amanai!"
The shocked faces on the students and the teacher only served to add to Hitomi's embarrassment. She wanted to hide away. The girls standing in the church pews continued to stare at them, out of shock or maybe thinking who the hell were these weirdos?
"Wh-Wh-Wh-wha-what!?!" Riko yelled out of embarrassment. The dam broke then. The girls started yelling, all of them looking at Gojo rather than Hitomi (which was an absolutely good thing). Gojo's handsome face was finally of use to them.
"Riko! Is he your boyfriend?!" One girl yelled out.
Another shouted, "He's so tall for a high schooler!"
"Show us your face!"
Gojo smirked, obviously enjoying the attention being given to him. He took off his glasses, revealing the infinite hues of his crystal blue eyes. The girls screamed even louder while all Hitomi found herself capable of doing was just facepalming.
"Wow, he's so hot!"
Riko looked very annoyed. "Don't get full of yourself."
"How shameful!" The teacher clapped her hands, trying to get the girls to settle. "Everyone, settle down now!"
As she walked over to Hitomi and Gojo, she said, "This is very inappropriate, even for family members."
"Oh, you'll have to forgive me. It was an emergency," Gojo immediately apologised, putting on his charming smile. "This is an emergency."
"It's important that we take Riko out of here," Hitomi added. "It's very urgent."
The teacher looked reluctant and clearly did not want to let Riko leave. But the second Gojo looked at her with that dazzling smile of his, she immediately agreed. Hitomi felt a stab of annoyance pass through her, but put it down to Gojo being a flirt in the middle of a serious mission. Riko stood next to them, looking very irritated with everything.
"What a fun school," Gojo said with a laugh as he grabbed Riko by the scruff of her neck and dragged her away. Hitomi shook her head with a half-smile as she followed them, keeping an eye out for any other intruders that might attack them.
"You idiot! I thought I told you not to show up!" Riko scolded loudly. Hitomi could understand her frustrations but...
"Kid, curse users have attacked," Hitomi stated. "I would explain the rest but it is quite easy to figure it out."
"She said it," Gojo answered. He leapt up to the roof and once again, Hitomi followed him, using a tiny bit of her cursed technique.
Gojo wasn't smiling anymore. There was no time to smile; getting Riko to the safety of Jujutsu High was the priority. "We're heading straight for Jujutsu High now. You don't want your friends to get caught up in this, do you?"
Riko's expression morphed into a mixture of sadness and resignation, like she was already starting to believe this is what her life would be. Hitomi swore she heard her heart crack, just a little. And she vowed to protect the kid as long as she could.
Gojo came to a screeching halt, his ringtone echoing loud and clear through the air. Riko and Hitomi stood behind him as he took out his phone, picking it up. It must have been Geto on the other end, judging from what Hitomi could catch.
"There's a thirty million bounty on Amanai's head?" Gojo stated. Riko tensed up and Hitomi moved closer, trying to listen in to what Geto was saying.
"Yeah, it was posted on an underground site for curse users. Apparently, the time limit is 11AM the day after tomorrow."
"Jeez," Hitomi wanted to hit something. She was going to get the chance very soon. Like magic or maybe it was just her instincts, the hairs on the back of her neck stood up. Someone was going to try and attack them. What appeared to be Shikigami formed on the roofs of other buildings around them. With an ugly paper bag style mask covering their face and their strange uniform, the Shikigami looked quite creepy.
"Sheesh," Gojo sounded annoyed. "And to think that we're always low on Jujutsu sorcerers. We'd welcome you with open arms, old man, if you decide to change jobs."
The Not-Shikigami just chuckled. "Nah...your profession sounds kinda risky. Just hand over the girl and we'll be out of here."
Hitomi pushed Riko behind her as Gojo raised his arms, attacking their enemy with one of his energy blasts. He struck two, blasting them together with the full force of his power. Strangely, neither of them disappeared.
"The Shikigami aren't disappearing. Which is the real one?!" Riko asked.
Clones. They were clones. Judging by their cursed energy, all of them felt like the real person to Hitomi. Gojo voiced the same out loud. She whirled around, sensing two of the clones appear next to her. Before she could do anything, Gojo had already pulled her and Riko into his infinity. The clones, or at least one of them, looked very confused.
"What's this?"
Gojo grinned. "The infinity. You know from Achilles and the tortoise."
"What?!"
"Didn't you learn that studying is important?" Gojo intensely stared at the clones, his blue eyes like a storm. With a wave of his hand, he crushed the two clones like they were nothing. "Yours is a cloning technique that allows a maximum of five, including the original. And you're always free to decide which of the clones is the main body, right? So if your main body is in danger, you just switch bodies. That's a nice technique you have there. I don't understand why you're so weak. Are you unable to produce a clone for a while after it's destroyed?"
"How do you know what my technique is?" The clone nearest to them asked, sounding unbelievably shocked.
"Unfortunately for you, I have good eyes," Gojo took off his sunglasses, revealing his stunning blue eyes. "You see, my technique is like a convergent series of infinite numbers. Anything that approaches me grows slower and slower, and ultimately it fails to ever reach me. When I amplify my Limitless technique, I get what you might call a negative natural number. It basically creates a single imaginary apple. Doing so causes everything around to get sucked into that space, like you saw. Though it's surprisingly inconvenient. I can't create too large a reaction near myself, and if I start worrying about the vectors too, controlling the cursed energy becomes a real pain. Basically it's super exhausting."
'Of course, he would explain his technique to an enemy,' Hitomi shook her head, mentally facepalming herself. 'But this enemy doesn't seem smart enough to understand it.' (Was anyone?)
"This next one is the divergence of infinity." Gojo held out his right hand, raising it in a position that felt familiar. "My reverse cursed technique, Red!"
Hitomi closed her eyes, bracing herself. But nothing happened. Gojo's attack had failed.
"You haven't practiced this one, have you?" She bluntly said. Gojo just grinned, before both of them landed a harsh punch on the old man, sending him flying and then crumpling to the ground.
"You're getting good with your punches, sweets," Gojo complimented, winking.
"Of course, I am," Hitomi answered haughtily. "I practice, unlike someone else."
"Well-"
All of a sudden, Riko exclaimed loudly. "Oh no!"
Instantly, Hitomi and Gojo turned around. Riko looked extremely panicked. She held up her phone screen. The image on it was...Kuroi, all tied up and gagged. The girl was on the verge of crying.
"What are we gonna do?! They got Kuroi!!"
Not much to say about this chapter, except the next couple of chapters, are going to be the last happy chapters before everything goes to...well, you know how it goes LOL.
