The Date
"You have a game today?" I stare with wide eyes at the basketball stadium in front of us while Finn parks the car.
"Yup."
"Surprise Selena! No. I will not go in there. I'll wait here or go home." I cross my arms in front of my chest.
"Come on." His hand reaches out after opening the passenger door. I ignore him. "Eloise and Archer are waiting for you."
"They're here?"
"Yup, inside. Come out or I'll carry you."
I stomp as soon as I get out of the car. Finn hugs me from behind and kisses my cheek.
"I want to prove to you that you're not a distraction."
"I won't cheer and just sit there quietly."
"Yeah, right," he says, chuckling as we walk towards the stadium.
"Selena, over here!" Eloise shouts and waves frantically to catch my attention.
"See you later, baby." He kisses me softly and I blush at his PDA.
"Good luck," I say breathlessly, making him smirks and I go to where my friends are.
"Hi bitches!" I say, rolling my eyes.
"Don't be mad. We support this love team," Archer teases while giving me a bag of my favorite corn chips —Tostitos Mild Cheddar — and a bottle of water.
"You came prepared. Thanks."
"Peace offering," he smirks.
The game starts and I keep munching my snacks to keep my mouth occupied. However, the game is getting more personal fouls and I can't help but shout 'hey' whenever Finn stumbles backwards or falls on the floor. He is about to shoot the ball when a defensive player taps his arm, making the ball circle the ring.
"W T F!" I shout loudly, feeling my adrenaline rushing through my body.
The referee calls for the foul, at the same time the ball gets into the basket.
"Yes!" The crowd on our side hoots.
Our team earns two free throws and I am jumping and shouting on the bench to cheer for Finn.
"He made it! That's my boyfriend!"
Eloise drags my wrist to make me sit and Finn winks at me when the game resumes. I'm grinning and I know my throat will be painful tomorrow. My friends are shaking their heads in amusement. The game ends with the victory on our side.
As soon as Finn emerges from the changing room, I jump into him and he laughs softly while adjusting his hold on me.
"Hi girlfriend."
We kiss briefly until someone clears his throat. I bury my face in his chest to hide my embarrassment as soon as my feet touch the ground.
"I'm sorry for my behavior last time Selena."
I turn around to see James, scratching his head and looking apologetic and sincere.
"We're good." I smile and look at the other players.
"Congratulations for winning the game," says Eloise.
Most of the players respond with thanks while others just smirk.
"Where are we going after this?" I whisper at Finn.
"I'm starving so lunch with your friends and later, an outdoor cinema?"
"You have pillows and blankets too?"
"Uh-huh! I know you like watching movies in an open space."
"How did...did you spy on me?"
"I was there when you looked like a kid on Christmas day jumping and hugging your Dad."
"I—"
"Come on lovebirds, I'm starving," Archer cuts me and we walk towards the parking lot while my heart thumps against my chest.
How come I never noticed Finn before? Yeah, I was busy dreaming with football and soccer players when the reality is far better — a basketball player.
After our lunch, we drive to the pop-up cinema and my eyes grow wide when we stop in an almost magical place. To our left is the glistening view of the sea, an open space with food trucks and a big screen in the middle, and to the right are trees with autumn foliage.
"Wow!"
"A little help, please," Finn says, breaking my trance.
I get the picnic mat from him while we walk and find a spot where there's a bit of distance from the crowd. We set up our mat and arrange the pillows and some snacks and drinks he brings.
Finn sits down on the mat, pulling me to settle in between his legs, my back on his chest and his arms around my waist, resting on my stomach. Instantly, my body warms up yet I pull the blanket to shield my legs from the slightly cool breeze.
"Do you like our date so far?" His breath is fanning my neck, sending shivers throughout my body.
"Yes." My voice is hoarse and he chuckles.
"Is it too soon if I say, I love you?"
I gasp and shift my position to face him.
"You love me? You just said you like me 5 days ago."
"I know what I feel but you don't have to say it if you're not yet there. I'll make you fall in love with me."
"Since when did you realize your feelings?"
"Three years ago."
"That long?! Why didn't you tell me earlier?"
He lifts me up effortlessly to make me lean on his chest and wrap his arms around me.
"Your eyes are fixed on football and soccer. I'm holding none of them. And I wanted to punch them whenever you came to the shop with red eyes and messy hair."
"And what gives you the courage now?"
He kisses my neck, making my body sizzle in a frenzy, "I saw the opportunity and I'll be damned if I squander it."
"Glad you didn't."
"Glad it works. I love you Selena Fischer."
He turns my head and kisses my lips.
"I never have felt this strongly towards someone. Bolt of awareness streaks at me whenever you're near. I don't want anyone else except you. Is this how you feel about me? Is this love?"
He gives playful kisses on my neck and I feel him smile.
"You had me when you said you didn't want anyone else but me. And I will see to it that it stays that way."
I turn around and circle my arms around his neck, pulling him closer.
"I want my hot ice cream before the movie starts."
He closes the gap between us and gives me a toe-curling kiss. My bae is the yummiest dessert I have ever tasted.
