II - The Cat in the Hat

SAGURU WANTED TO STRANGLE THAT CAT.
It had been one(1!) day and KID had already made a mess of anything he could get into. He'd refused to eat the cat food Saguru had bought(it was tuna, don't cats like fish?), forcing the detective to reheat more chicken. He had knocked every. single. glass. Off the kitchen counter. AND he'd somehow gotten into his closet and torn holes into his shirts, stolen a bunch of pencils, and raked his claws across the carpet.
Bastard cat really lived up to his name.
Saguru had finally cleaned up KID's mess when he heard a crash in the other room. "DAMN CAT!" he shouted, storming into the living room and fully prepared to toss the stray outside.
Saguru found KID on the coffee table, standing above what was once a vase and was now a bunch of shattered glass. KID mewed, almost apologetically.
Saguru took a deep breath, prepared to yell, and then stared deep into the cat's absolutely adorable eyes.
He couldn't stay mad, could he?
Saguru sighed, his shoulders sagging as he walked over towards the vase and started to pick up the cracked pieces. "Please, I implore you to stop."
KID mewed again, tilting his head. Though, he stayed on the coffee table, only moving to lay down. When Saguru finished cleaning up, he picked up the kitten, holding him close to his chest and scratching him behind the ear. He let out a short hum, now in a slightly better mood. "How about we go shopping, hm?"
KID mewed in response, pressing closer against Saguru's chest. The stective took this as a positive response, proceeding to grab a light jacket and heading outside.
They headed into town and down to the pet store. They got a few odd looks(probably because KID wasn't in a carrier), and a group of kids even asked to pet him. KID certainly didn't seem to mind the attention.
Once they made it inside the pet store, Saguru allowed KID to pick out his own food and a collar. The cat was rather intelligent--or at least, had a good grasp on human speech. The collar he picked out was blue and studded with fake gems, quite showy for a cat but it was cheap so Saguru really didn't mind.
"You have such a cute kitten!" the cashier exclaimed as they were checking out, "What's their name?"
"His name is KID," Saguru responded, now feeling rather silly at the choice.
The cashier tilted her head. "After the Phantom Thief?"
"Y-yeah. That's the one."
The cashier smiled slyly. "Wait here a minute, please?" She headed into the back of the shop, returning a minute later with a miniature version of the jewel thief's top. She placed it on KID(the cat)'s head. "Ta-da!"
KID leapt out of Saguru's hold and onto the store counter, strutting about and seemingly showing off. Saguru had to admit, the hat did fit him.
"You can keep that," the cashier said, "consider it a gift."
Saguru nodded. "Thank you."
"Mhm!" the cashier hummed, "Thank you for shopping!"
Saguru grabbed KID again, holding him close to his chest after slipping the collar around his neck. As they arrived back home, Saguru set the cat on the kitchen table and gave him a quick scratch behind the ear.
"You know," Saguru commented, "You are absolutely adorable."
KID mewed, almost as if saying, 'Yeah, I know. I'm the best, aren't I?'
But of course, that had to be Saguru's imagination. Cats don't talk.
