Chapter 59- Mech
-Kara's POV-
The boys all packed their things and prepared for a deep snowfall, when in reality, the snow wouldn't stick to the ground due to being powdery. It wasn't packing snow. The snow only came down harder, and soon, it was packing snow. A week or so later, the blizzard let up, and it was lightly falling. Pete bolted out into the snow with Lachlan and Vikk. Pete leaped off the door's base, and free fell into the snow, which went poof as he landed. I laughed.
Vikk landed face first in the snow, and Lachlan tripped and joined him. Pete reappeared, with a small pile of powder snow on his head. He spun, and it flew off. Lachlan got up, and his dark red sweatshirt was coated in white snow. His hair was frosted, making it even brighter in color. It was funny.
I watched as Mat inched to the door, desperate to be allowed out, but was chaffed, and warned to stay in by Sky. Mat backed up, but looked longingly at the snow. Preston refused to go out, and Rob stood with him. Mitch, being a teenager, still enjoyed snow, and ran in after the younger kids. Wrapped in a thick cloak, Jerome bounded out next, chasing Mitch through the snow.
But the second after he went out, Jerome came back in. He was shivering, and didn't look too happy. "Why is it so cold." "I dunno Jerome. Why is it?" "Rhetorical question Mitch!" "Okay, Biggums. But I dunno what you're talking about. It's so nice out here!"
"Sure, Mitch. Enjoy!" And he ran back into his room. Mitch, Vikk, Lachlan, and Pete all had an epic poke battle with snowballs. They stopped instantly, because Vikk got a ball of ice to the ear. Lachlan carried him in while he cried and held his hand over his ear.
He pulled Vikk's hand away, to reveal a dark red mark, and dark red liquid pooling in the lower part of his ear. Vikk pulled his hand back from Lachlan, and held it over his ear again. I grabbed a towel from the kitchen quick, and Lachlan managed to pull Vikk's hand away again. I pressed the towel to his ear, and cleaned out the blood carefully. Lachlan held Vikk's shaky hand, and he relaxed.
There was a cut farther in his ear, so it wasn't the easiest to clean out all the blood. Sky came in, took the bloodied towel and gave me a fresh one. Vikk stopped fighting me, and leaned into Lachlan as I cleaned out the wound thoroughly. I patched it up for him, and sent him to bed. I was only 2 years older, but it turned out that Vikk and the others had no substantial maternal figures.
The closest they had to a maternal figure was Sky until now. Now they have an actual girl to look to as a motherly figure. At least, the younger ones do. Such as- Vikk, Lachlan, Preston, Rob, Pete, and Mat. And Jason, but he avoided me for a reason unknown to me. Even more, I'm younger than 3 of the ones I listed, the same age as 2, and older than the other 2. I'm 9, Vikk is 8, Pete and Lachlan are 9, Mat is 7, Preston and Rob are 12, and Jason is also 12. Nuts, right?
-Brice's POV-
Going quickly through my stuff to find my book, I come across something I'd forgotten about entirely. Sadie's baby toy. I picked it up, and instantly dropped it. The taint burned my hand, and I heard a distant banshee scream. Distrust was welled up inside the toy, and I forced myself to pick it up.
Seto came in, and saw the toy. He froze, and flinched as the scream of the banshee jumped from the toy to Seto. Touching the toy no longer screamed, but it still hurt Seto. I opened the top of the incinerator bin, and tossed it. Every negative effect went with it, and burned in the incinerator bin of lava.
But that may have been a bad idea, because everything just has to go wrong at that moment. An unwanted presence is here. I bolt upstairs to the main hall with Seto close behind. There, I find my sister, standing between my friends, trapped. But there's something off. She shouldn't be here, and Sky was yelling at her for something.
"How dare you come here and do that! That is unacceptable! Get out! I never want to see you again. If I do, you will never see daylight again."
She fled. "Sky... Why'd you just threaten my sister? Just curious, not defending her blindly or anything." "She came in all sweet like, and turned on Preston. She tried to kill him." And he pointed to Preston, who sat shell-shocked in the corner with Rob.
"What?! Why?!" "I don't know, but it didn't seem like her. But you were lied to Brice. She is exactly like her mother. Cruel, careless, and not at all open-minded." "Humph. Fine. She can never come back or anywhere near here. Preston isn't what a child her age would try to attack. He much more agile, nimble, and swift. How'd she even get to him?"
"He was caught off guard. She got her knife into his leg and cut a deep gash into his previously gouged leg." "Is his leg gonna survive?" "At this rate, with all the injury? No. No it won't." "Then what'll you do?" "Amputate?"
"No... That would hurt his existence. He's the last lava creeper we've ever found in decades. Unless others have hidden hundreds of thousands of miles away, he's the last one. We need to save him. And his entire race."
"Fine, but then what do we do about his leg? It's been losing functionality ever time it's injured." "Cast it thoroughly. Make sure it's always casted to avoid more injury and help it strengthen itself. That's gotta work, Sky."
A month or two, and birthdays come around. April is fun, because that's 4 of us. Then June, for Vikk. Vikk is briefly Lachlan's age, and they both seem to enjoy the age similarity. But they know November will come, and Lachlan will be older again. Mat's birthday comes very late June, and he turns 8. He often looks sad, staring out the window.
Pete goes up to him on his birthday, because he'd once again sat quietly in the window. "What's wrong Mat?" "I need Kenny, Pete. And we need to go soon." "We'll go, I assure you. But- that didn't answer my question, Mathew. What's wrong?" "I- I don't know. I just feel really weird." "Like what?" "I'm not sure. Nothing hurts, I just feel like I should be somewhere else."
I walk over, slightly concerned. "What do you mean somewhere else?" "Like I don't belong. Like I should be far away." "In the city, maybe? Since you're human?" "No. Farther. Much farther than that." "Oh? Then where?"
"I don't know. Just not here." "The Mech lands? The Mesa?" "Yeah! That's what it's called." "But Mat, that's for animatronics. Androids. You're not an android. You're a cyborg. There's a difference." "Like what?" "You have human qualities, and a full human body. They're all machinery and databases."
"But I need to go. I feel like I should be there, not here." A sniffle echoes within the helmet of Mat's suit. He puts his hand on a button on his helmet, presses it, and his helmet dissolves into a pair of gray and orange visors. He shoves them on his face, and I can see his face is wet with tears. "See?"
"See what?" He sniffed, looking up with his orange lenses. "You're a human inside the suit." "Fine. You got me there, but still. I'm basically all mechanical. I can't live without the suit, so I might as well be an android." "Never say that! You don't want to be an android. I've dealt with them before, not pretty. They glitch every five seconds and can't speak well." "Okay then..."
"Can I least go to see it?" "Only under strict supervision. That's not a place you want to get stuck in." He held out his hand. "Take me." I took his hand and teleported to the Mesa. Ahead of me stood the Mech Lands, metal walls gleaming in the late afternoon sun. The Mesa's clay canyons looked beautiful in the sunset, and the sky turned magenta.
Mat looked enchanted by the Mech Lands, but stayed a safe distance away like I'd asked. He comes back and takes my hand again. "Take me back." I teleport back, and head to bed. Mat stops me, and pulls off his visors. His eyes are a very pale blue, and the gaze seems fractured, not quite focused. I know he can see me.
I study his face, and notice a thick white scar running down his jaw, but starts in his hairline. "Thank you, Brice." He says suddenly. I jump, and respond. "No problem. What happened?" He cocked his head. "What?"
"Your hairline and jaw. The scar." "A skeleton a few years ago. Shot super close to my face. Grazed my head anyway." "Okay. Good night, Mat." He puts his visors back on, presses a button, and it extends around his head and back into the helmet. He skips off and down the hall to his room.
I wonder how life will continue... This is so random. This all started with Sky finding Ty in a field outside his home, while Mitch, Jerome, Seto, and I sat in the dungeon below. Vikk and Lachlan were probably learning how to run the streets, and Rob and Preston were probably bored here, at the Flower castle. It's amazing to think how far we've come, and how we've gotten through the past pains, and are in a present of friendship.
Mitch, Jerome, Seto, and I should hate Sky. He never helped us until Ty came along. He didn't try to stop the torture we went through, and suddenly believed we'd forgive him. We did, but that's just because we're all too gentle-natured to say no. Let's wait and see how live will unfold our lives.
-A/N- Sorry, it's a bit shorter than usual, but I'm actually gonna end it next chapter. A few days, and the sequel shall commence. I am calling it, 'Try Again'. Idk why, but it seems good enough. Look for the cover on my profile soon. Love you guys!
