Chapter 37 - The Jungle Warriors
There we stood with the wounded warrior of the Amores, tending his wounds as best we could and staring out one of the windows with our spears and pistols already loaded. But we saw or heard nothing and no one. And unfortunately the warrior was still unconscious and we could not ask him about the attackers.
However, it was clear to us that someone who could injure a warrior of the Amores and make him take himself to safety, instead of fighting to the bitter end as they usually do, must be very dangerous. And it was also clear to us that it could not be hairless gray creatures or flying demons. Because the Amores are used to fighting with both kinds and almost like to rush into the fights with them.
For more than an hour we watched the area around our hiding place through the window with Argus' eyes, but nothing happened. But the warrior woke up briefly and muttered a few words of which we hardly understood. Only one thing was clear to understand. "Warrior of the jungle." Which he repeated several times. Unfortunately, the warrior died shortly thereafter. His injuries were simply too severe.
There was no time for mourning for a warrior we knew but not well enough to really feel sorrow. Because we were now faced with a new problem. We had absolutely no idea who the warriors of the jungle were. No one had told us about them and we had no idea what they might look like or how dangerous they really were.
We needed to talk about what we were going to do. Yibo suggested that we pack our stuff and leave. I was against it at first. We had had a long night of walking many miles. We were tired and exhausted. Besides, it was daytime and that meant we couldn't move outside under the cover of darkness.
Yibo, however, insisted that we go. "We don't know where they are. They could be close by now. We have no allies here. Besides, King Raha could be on our heels with his warriors." He said. I saw that he was afraid and believe me when I tell you that it takes a lot to scare Yibo.
Finally, after some back and forth, I gave in and agreed with him. He simply had the better arguments. However, I was not thrilled. Going out during the day, being tired and exhausted and always being careful not to be discovered and attacked, which seemed almost impossible. Because with all the snow that lay, we simply had to stand out with our black clothes.
We packed everything up, said goodbye to the dead warrior and left the house after making sure there were no creatures around. Yibo took my hand and said, "You're not going to let go of my hand okay?"
I asked, "What if we get attacked?"
"That's different. Then you shoot at anything that is not human. We only use the spears on those we miss with the guns and get too close."
"Did I tell you that I am miserable with firearms? In the army, the soldiers would panic if I held a gun. The chance of me hitting them with it was higher than hitting my actual target."
Suddenly Yibo stopped and laughed. He shook his head laughing, pulled me to him and held me in his arms laughing for a moment. "Oh my poor darling. Don't worry about it. I trust you won't shoot me."
"Mhhh, give me a laptop and a drone and I promise I'll always hit the target. Give me a pistol or a machine gun and I promise I'll hit everything but the target."
Again Yibo laughed, kissed me and said, "Come on honey, let's move on. And the next chance I get, I'll give you shooting practice."
"Um, I don't think that will help. You have no idea how many hours I've been in gun training and not gotten one bit better."
"If I teach you, you'll be fine." He said, kissed me again and walked off with me.
It wasn't until afterwards that we really realized that we had been standing in the street talking the whole time. Visible to all creatures. But we were lucky and didn't get attacked. Anyway, we thought we were lucky.
We thought differently when we realized that we were being watched. There were the black flying devils and also gray creatures and they were staring at us. From rooftops and out of the shadows, they were watching our every move. Yibo guessed that the gray creatures did not attack us because the sun was shining. The skin of these monsters is very sensitive to sunlight and since that colored mist disappeared, it no longer protected them from the sun's rays.
Somehow, however, I did not think this was the reason. I thought it was a possibility, but not the reason why they were watching us but not attacking. And it didn't explain why the flying creatures didn't attack us. They just stared down at us from their high perches. They flapped their wings at most once, but stayed where they were.
I must admit that they didn't attack us but just watched us, I found even more scary. And I'm sure the goose bumps I had were not from the cold! The sun was shining and the sun's rays felt great and warm. Even the snow was melting a bit. But I still had crazy goosebumps.
We had been walking the streets of this small town for about half an hour and were being watched incessantly, but not attacked and we had no idea why. Moreover, we wondered who these jungle warriors were supposed to be and why we were hearing about them for the first time from a dying one?
Of course, all this brooding didn't get us anywhere, but it did help us a little to distract ourselves from our fears and worries and to not keep looking around nervously.
We turned a corner and suddenly Yibo stopped. He pushed me behind him, as he almost always did, and asked, "Do you hear that?"
I listened and nodded. "Those are cars aren't it?"
"Yes, and they're shooting at something." Replied Yibo.
Yibo pointed to the building behind us. It was an apartment building and we were standing by one of the three front doors. Quickly Yibo had picked the lock of the front door and we went into the house. We ran up the stairs to the top floor where there was a skylight. It was an accidental find. We didn't know we could get up to the roof there.
Yibo lifted me, I opened the skylight and then he first helped me climb up, unfortunately there was no ladder, then I helped him up. But I don't think he needed my help. And when we were both at the top, we stopped abruptly. How could I forget to look around when I was the first to reach the roof?
There was this huge black creature sitting there, flapping its wings, and I thought, "Oh God, now I'm going to have to shoot." I almost peed in my pants with fear. I only had the pistol and my spear was still attached to my backpack.
Trembling I raised my pistol, Yibo was standing next to me nodding at me and I called out to the creature, "Get lost or I'll have to shoot you." The creature looked like it was laughing at me. "Get lost!" I shouted again, pointing the gun directly at the horrible thing. And I swear, either it had to vomit, or it was really laughing at me. In any case, it wasn't afraid.
Meanwhile, while I was pretending to know what I was doing, Yibo untied my spear and handed it to me. I pulled out both sides and the spear was at its full length. But the creature was again not afraid and rather looked curiously at the spear. And then something incredible happened.
Again, gunshots and engine sounds echoed from somewhere and the creature simply turned around and searched the area with its sharp eyes. Yibo and I also walked to the edge of the roof and the creature looked at us just once and immediately away. So we were standing side by side with our enemy!
And as if that wasn't astonishing and at the same time strange enough, a second black creature landed right next to us and did nothing but sniff at us briefly and then went back to watching the area. Yibo and I were so perplexed that we almost forgot why we were on the roof. And there were even two more creatures joining us.
Honestly, I didn't know what to make of it and still don't. Did the humans and creatures perhaps take a break in the war against each other and one forgot to inform the humans about it?
So in the end we stood in the middle of these 4 black demonic creatures and watched the area with them. The gunshots and engine sounds came closer and closer and then, oh God this was so awful, we saw the people fleeing on foot and in cars into the street. They were followed by these huge creatures that are even bigger and wider built than the Amores. And their faces are horribly disfigured.
They followed the humans and the humans shot at them, but the creatures didn't seem to mind. I saw one of these monsters grab a human, rip its mouth wide open and open its jaws like a snake and just bite the human's head off and spit it aside. Then he took the headless body, spun it around and held it above it. Blood just shot out of the body and into the creature's mouth. And where there had just been a bullet wound on the creature's stomach, the skin was suddenly unharmed again.
The black creatures walked further away from the edge of the roof, as if they didn't want to be seen. The gray creatures crawled further into the shadows, but that didn't help them. These jungle warriors still found them, grabbed them, bit their necks or tore off their heads and drank their blood.
We could see how fast and strong these creatures are as they rushed after the cars, simply pushing aside the wrecked cars on the roads. Two of them had no problem pushing a garbage truck aside!
I don't know how long we watched them. It seemed like seconds to me. But it couldn't have been more than 3 or 4 minutes. But when they were gone, the street was paved with bloodless corpses. So incredibly many dead and in just such a short moment! And it was not only people, but also creatures! They killed everything that came into their hands.
Yibo was about to take my hand and pull me away from the edge of the roof when I noticed movement among the corpses. "Wait!" I said, pointing down. "There, there's someone still alive. A human being! It's a human being."
"But how can that be? He was killed, wasn't he!" Said Yibo, sucking in a sharp gasp of air. "It's not just one! Look closely Zhan. All the ones that still have a head are moving again."
The man I saw standing up, however, didn't look like a human at all. He now had a cruelly disfigured face as well, and that scream he let out was so harrowing and frightening that it sent shivers down my spine. "They, they turned!" I gasped.
The four black creatures were now standing next to us again, looking down as well. They looked at each other and seemed to be communicating with some kind of sounds. Then the four took off into the air and swooped down on the now transformed humans and creatures! They tore off their heads!
And before I even realized what was happening, two of these other flying creatures landed near us. They were both almost completely brown. Only on their foreheads they had white spots. But that did not make them more beautiful. Because they are still as ugly as their black opponents.
The two creatures grabbed Yibo and me by the backpacks, dragged us winging over the roof and down! But we didn't fall, we were slowly lowered down by them. And Yibo who got down first cursed, "What the hell?" Then I saw why he was cursing. King Raha found us and the creatures that were supposed to protect us humans betrayed us!
Two Demoid warriors grabbed Yibo and me, bound and gagged us, and put us in some kind of wheeled cage that they dragged behind them. They went through the city and used the back roads a lot and only when we were out of the city and in an open field did they stop again. Raha came over to our cage, banged hard on the wooden bars and laughed. "It doesn't look very sturdy. But believe me, it can take a beating!"
"What do you want from us?" Yibo muttered under his gag.
"Where's Bac?" Asked Raha. We shrugged our shoulders. "So you still want to claim you don't know where he is?" We nodded our heads. "Well, then we will hold you captive until it occurs to you again. Take them to our hiding place and make sure no one sees you!" Raha shouted to his men.
They dragged us out of their cage, across the field and to a country house or something. They dragged us into this house, through the house and down to the basement. Two torches were burning down there. One of the two men opened a basement door and the other pushed us into the room beyond, after taking off our shackles and gags. "Have fun at the reunion." He said and slammed the door.
A torch was burning there too and when we turned around we couldn't believe our eyes. Three people we know very well by now were also there. He Peng, Haikuan and Cheng!
