Chapter 2: Instruction Manual Not Included
[BEN's POV]
"Wait TRIS!" My voice cracked as I called out to her, nearly fumbling over my feet trying to chase after Tris.
Being her father, she had my powers so she could maneuver out of my reach and glitch out my view. I had only recently taught her how to use her powers and she caught on rather quickly.
By the time I got to the hallway she was already glitching through the walls or running through them like her mother could.
Slightly frustrated I followed her as she darted around the corner and into the kitchen.
"Tris!" I glitched through the wall and into the kitchen but she was no where to be seen.
"Tris?" I looked around the kitchen frantically until movement caught my attention outside one of the kitchen windows.
She was darting through the woods.
"Oh sh-" I glitched through the wall to cut her off, apparently I scared her for a moment because she froze and only her limbs would glitch back and forth.
She's buffering
Before I could take advantage of the situation she had glitched straight through me and ran away giggling.
This girl
I wiped around to follow her but she was out of sight....again...
I glitched this way and that way, searching for her
I knew she couldn't have gone far, she could only glitch as far as 30 yards at a time, but then again that's in any direction.
Now that's a problem...
I peered through the trees, glanced left and right, this kid had me doing complete 360's.
"Oh come on...TRIS!" I ran my hands through my hair exhaling deeply in defeat.
Suddenly a high pitched piercing scream echoed through the air.
It was Tris.
Immediately I glitched to the source and there I stood staring at the most heart stopping scene in existence.
( Y/n) was gently throwing Tris in the air and catching her.
Tris screamed every time but when she was caught she would giggle excessively.
A wave of relief consumed me and all the tension in my body melted away.
"Now where were you headed missy ma'am?" (Y/n) giggled as she caught Tris and rubbed her nose against hers.
"Mommy! I'm going to find B.J!" She giggled
"What??" She gasped, that's when she turned and spotted me.
I approached her somewhat embarrassed because of what a lousy excuse of a father I was.
"She ran off before I could explain.." I could feel my face begin to grow in warmth.
"You and daddy can be happy again!" Tris exclaimed, (Y/n) directed her attention back towards Tris and held her tight.
"We are happy, we have you and you're all we need." (Y/n) gave her mothering smile that seemed to make everything alright.
I finally met Tris and (Y/n) and merged into a passionate family hug. (Y/n) rested her head on Tris' and I rested mine upon (Y/n)'s.
I could feel (Y/n)'s pain, it was almost as if I could read her mind.
She didn't want to let go of B.J but she knew she had to for Tris.
For us...
When we made it back to the front of the mansion, Tris had fallen asleep so (Y/n) was about to take her inside until she stopped at the front doors and turned around.
I didn't realize but I had stopped several feet away from the grand doors apparently just staring at the ground.
"Ben?"
I looked up at (Y/n), she appeared exhausted, not physically but mentally. From worrying about Tris and the emotional trauma from losing B.J. It was almost as if she was going through a mental warfare with herself.
"Is everything alright?"
I slowly nodded while approaching her and locked my eyes with hers. She didn't take her eyes off of mine as if she could find an answer in my empty ones.
"I just wish I could turn back time." I whispered finally breaking the gaze and staring down at the ground.
I felt a semi-warm touch underneath my chin, that brought my head back up to meet (Y/n)'s again. Her hand cupped my cheek, gently caressing it with her thumb. She opened her mouth to say something but all that came out was a hallow sigh.
Her hand left my face as her eyes glanced down for a moment and she turned around to open the doors. The doors opened with a slight creak and she slipped inside with myself close behind.
She walked into the living room and up the stairs as I watched from the entrance way.
In the corner of my eye I saw Slenderman in the kitchen with a mug of something cupped within his hands. He was peering out the kitchen windows.
The house was surprisingly silent and I guess Slenderman was enjoying it.
I had so many questions but I figured it would be rude to ruin his moment so I turned to go upstairs.
"Conflicted Benjamin?"
I turned my attention back to Slenderman. He must have read my mind.
I sighed rubbing the back of my neck as I approached him. "I don't know what to do Slenderman...I can tell she's still hurting and I am too but..I'm so lost."
A soft hum came from Slenderman as he gripped his mug a little tighter. "You can't change the past Benjamin, but you can use it to shape the future."
His head slowly turned to me as he said that and put down his mug on the kitchen counter.
"As a mother she will grieve, perhaps for the rest of her life....but in increments, this is where you must not let yourself or her sink into despair. If either of you do, you will lose moments with your living child like you already have."
For a moment I was confused, but then I realized we had indulged in many arguments since Tris had been born.
Most of which, we either blamed ourselves or each other for what happened.
"If you were there this never would have happened!!"
Her tears would flow down her face endlessly and her eyes would become so red from fury.
She would pace around the room gripping her hair as if looking for anything that would stop the madness.
"It wasn't my fault, why didn't you find it suspicious?! That I would just leave you so suddenly and he would just step in?!?"
Deep down we knew Tris was listening but we were engulfed in the moment.
In her presence we were always happy and kept smiles on our faces.
But behind closed doors it was either a war zone or empty felt hugs.
"BECAUSE EVERYONE ELSE IN MY LIFE DID."
Sometimes (Y/n) would lose control and start throwing things.
Sometimes I would lose control and think I was stopping her but I was only hurting her.
Sometimes we thought of leaving
Sometimes one of us would leave without telling the other for days.
Those 'sometimes' added up into 'often' and those 'oftens' resulted in us missing some of Tris' favorite childhood memories, like when she caught her first butterfly or showing her favorite drawings.
"Don't be so hard on yourselves, Dark Link is the only one to blame."
The sound of his name burned my soul. I could feel myself myself getting heated and Slenderman could tell. He only patted my shoulder before grabbing his mug again and walking to his office.
My mind was racing originally but then all I could think about was finding Dark Link and making him beg for mercy.
That bastard will face my unholy wrath one of these days.
Suddenly I heard a female voice behind me.
"Ben we need to talk."
I turned around to see (Y/n), she had sadness in her eyes but her expression leaked of a different emotion I couldn't read.
I approached her and cupped her face while giving her a warm smile to reassure her everything was going to be ok. "About what?"
She pulled her face away from my hands.
"We need to talk about us"
