he was the problem

(Bonus long woosan chapter! Let me know what you think of it 😅❤️)

San heard the commotion in the hallway as Seonghwa and Hongjoong returned but couldn't bring himself to see what was going on. He felt awful for ignoring his friends in need but he just didn't have the energy.

He'd been sitting cross-legged under the covers almost all day. He had nowhere else to go, since Wooyoung had spent the day in and out of everyone else's rooms, not to mention playing games in the living room. He was everywhere.

San couldn't face him.

Not after what he'd said.

He would let Wooyoung come to him when he was ready.

But San wasn't all that patient by nature. Especially when he was worried about his loved ones.

Just then he heard Mingi and Yunho's door close and soon after, Seonghwa and Hongjoong's. The dorm fell silent.

He hadn't really had much of an appetite, but he knew he should eat something, so he decided to make his way to the kitchen.

Easing his way out from under the covers, he stood and stretched out his achy joints. Throwing on an oversized hoodie, he approached the door and pressed his ear against it.

Still nothing.

He decided the coast was clear and opened the door, taking a quick glance left and right before exiting.

He started walking towards the kitchen when he dared a glance at Mingi and Yunho's door. He knew he should just keep walking. But he couldn't do it. He slowly approached and crouched down next to it.

"—he's so sweet...I just...don't know how he'll react."

San was startled to hear Wooyoung sharing something personal and moved to stand. He didn't come to spy on him.

But his mind wandered, thinking over the words.

Was he talking about San?

He thought about crouching down again but gave himself a quiet smack to the face and stood back up, continuing on to the kitchen.

He knew it was none of his business. He honestly didn't even want to listen to figure out what he was saying.

He just wanted to hear Wooyoung's voice again.

He hadn't spoken to him in days.

Their argument felt so stupid now. Why did he ever think to accuse Wooyoung of cheating on him? Just because he'd made new friends here?

He still didn't understand why Wooyoung wanted to stay, but he knew Wooyoung well enough to know that wasn't the reason.

He knew Wooyoung had spent years hiding their relationship behind Seonghwa's back, just to make San happy. San could still remember the day he'd found out he got into Fever.

...

"Woo! Woo! Woo!" San smiled, bouncing up and down in their dingy old apartment.

"What? What? What?" Wooyoung called from the kitchen as he was making dinner.

"I got in!!!"

Wooyoung dropped his spatula and turned around, his eyes wide with excitement.

"You got in!?"

"I got in!!"

He let out a squeal and ran to San, pulling him into his arms. The two bounced around in a circle cheering for as long as their energy lasted and they had to step back, struggling for air.

"I never doubted you, Sannie."

Wooyoung leaned in and planted a kiss on San's cheek. He smiled at him, his hand still lightly holding San's neck.

"Dinner," San smiled.

Wooyoung gave him a confused expression before quickly remembering the meat he had cooking and scrambled to save it from burning. San laughed and started setting the table, grabbing out bowls and napkins. He realized the napkin holder was empty but couldn't remember where the new ones were.

"Hey, Woo. Do you know where the napkins are?"

"Oh shit—I wasn't sure where you wanted them so they're somewhere in the storage closet by the door."

"That's okay, thanks for putting them away," San smiled, and made his way over to it.

He went to open the door but realized it was already ajar. Cocking his head slightly he pulled it open the rest of the way, realizing the cause of the problem: the recycling bin hadn't been pushed back in far enough. Wooyoung always did things in a rush so it wasn't uncommon for a few items to be stored a bit haphazardly.

He pushed it back and reached up for the napkins on the first shelf but accidentally knocked them off, spilling them into the recycling bin. Groaning, he knelt down to pick them up, one by one. Finally he'd reached the last napkin and he lifted it up to put back in the package when the envelope beneath it caught his eye.

He picked it up, reading the address.

Mr. Jung Wooyoung

An unopened letter for Wooyoung? What was it doing in the recycling? He must have missed it when he tossed out the old mail this morning. Proudly, San picked it up and shut the closet, making his way back to the table.

As he looked a little closer at the envelope, he realized where it had come from. Wonderland. The band.

Wanting to surprise Wooyoung, he quickly hid it in his pocket and finished setting the table and sat down, waiting for Wooyoung to join him.

"Why are you looking at me like that?"

San stifled an smile.

"Like what?"

Wooyoung rolled his eyes and brought the food to the table, sitting next to San. San had planned to wait until they were done eating but he got excited and pulled out the envelope.

"Look what I found!"

Wooyoung's eyes flashed with recognition and an unreadable expression crossed his face.

"Wh—where did you find that??"

"You must have thrown it out on accident. I think...I think it's from Wonderland."

He waited for Wooyoung to get excited but he didn't. San pushed the letter into his hands, already bouncing in his seat.

"Come on—open it!"

Wooyoung looked down at it and placed it on the table taking San's hands in his.

"San...I actually wanted to talk to you about something."

"And it can wait! We have to see what it says!"

"San, I've been wanting to talk to you about it for a while now."

"What do you mean?"

"I know you love music and you're incredible—you're going to be an amazing musician. You were made to be a performer."

San didn't like where this was going.

"But...I don't think I'm cut out for that. I was actually thinking I could go to culinary school."

San pulled away.

"Wait—just hear me out! It's only a two-year program and it's a fifteen minute walk from your studio. We can find an apartment right between them and—"

"This isn't about your playing, is it? You know that you're an incredible guitarist."

"It's not that—although we both know I'll never be as good as you—"

"Wooyoung. Why don't you want to open the letter?"

Wooyoung looked away.

"Wonderland is changing its studio. It's on the other side of town. And...the leader is kind of strict. He told us that he doesn't want us to be distracted by anything so...he said no dating. At least...not until we've made a name for ourselves."

San leaned back, not sure what to do. His mind was spinning. There was too much.

"It's okay, I didn't really think the big stage was meant for me anyways. And I'm more of a solo player—"

Just then San grabbed Wooyoung by the shirt and pulled him into a deep kiss, pressing their faces as tightly together as he could.

Wooyoung kissed back for a moment before pulling away in confusion.

"Damn, babe—what was that for??"

"You would really change your entire future just to be with me?"

Wooyoung laughed shyly and looked away.

"I guess when you put it like that..."

San grabbed his shoulders and forced him to face him. He needed him to see how much his gesture meant to him.

"Woo..."

"It's not really a big deal. I just can't picture a future without you."

...

Of course, San could have let him throw away a perfectly good opportunity just to follow him. But he didn't. He couldn't. He knew Wooyoung wasn't thinking straight. He loved performing. They'd both gotten into busking for the same reason.

He couldn't be the reason Wooyoung missed out on his dreams.

And yet...continually he pushed Wooyoung away.

When he'd felt awful about making Wooyoung sneak around so he'd tried to break things off.

When he'd told Hongjoong about everything without talking to Wooyoung.

When he threw him out for wanting to put up with another dating ban.

It seemed like he was always the problem.

So maybe...he was the one who needed to fix it.
