Think This Through
"What!?" Stephanie said as fear and panic washed over her; tears falling from her eyes.
Jessica sat stunned; her eyes wide, tears in them that have yet to fall, a hand over her mouth.
So many emotions and thoughts rushed through Jessica's mind.
How could this be?
Well, she knew how it could be but this was her child! Her fifteen year old child; her baby girl.
Her baby was having a baby! Where did she go wrong as a mother that this happened?
"Oh god!" Jessica exclaimed internally.
Jessica's head began to spin. She leaned forward and placed her elbows on her knees as she buried her face in her hands.
After a few moments Dr. Scott broke the silence and told them that since she was a pediatrician, Stephanie would need to see a OB-GYN. Jessica nodded her head and said she would call her doctor as soon as they got home.
It was a quiet drive home; neither Jessica or Stephanie said anything both still too shocked to speak.
As soon as they pulled in the driveway of their home, Stephanie rushed out of the car and used her keys to unlock the front door. She ran into her room and curled into a ball on her bed and sobbed into her pillow.
Jessica sat in the car and let her tears fall.
After collecting herself, Jessica got out of the car and walked into the house.
"Jessica? What's happened? Stephanie ran passed me and she was crying." Kathy said.
Jessica looked into Kathy's eyes and shook her head. "Not now...Kathy, I need a shoulder to cry on later so please don't go too far. Can you buy a bottle of wine...or several?"
Kathy walked up to Jessica and hugged her tight. "Alright, Jess. I'll run to the store and I'll be back soon."
Jessica made her way to Stephanie's room. She knocked on the door, but no answer. Jessica pressed her ear to the door and heard sobbing. Her heart ached for her daughter.
"Stephanie? May I come in please?" Jessica said.
She heard the door unlock but didn't open.
Jessica turned the door knob and opened the door; she saw Stephanie in her bed with her covers pulled over her head.
Jessica walked over and laid down with her daughter and held her close.
Stephanie pulled the covers away and turned over and buried her face in Jessica's chest and sobbed.
"Mommy I'm...so sorry. I didn't mean to disappoint you!" Stephanie cried. "I'm sorry!"
"Shhhhh...it's okay. Everything is going to be okay." Jessica said as she held Stephanie in her arms. "You didn't disappoint me. Please don't ever think that."
"But...I saw your face in the doctor's office! I've never seen you look like that before." Stephanie said.
Jessica let her tears fall. "Oh my baby girl! No, I was just...shocked and didn't expect this; and well, I'm scared for you. You're fifteen; this is going to be the hardest thing you're ever going to do."
Stephanie continued to sob; she stayed quiet for a few minutes then looked up at Jessica and said. "Mom?"
Jessica looked into her daughters eyes.
"Mom, I...don't want this. I don't it! I want...an abortion!"
Jessica stared wide eyed at her daughter. She closed her eyes as more tears fell down her cheeks. "Stephanie...my baby girl. Just calm down and think this through. If...that is what you want then, I will support you in your decision. But if you choose to keep this baby then of course I'll be there with every step of the way. I'll be here to help you; you won't have to do this alone. Just...please think about it before you make your final decision because once it's done, there's no going back." Stephanie didn't say anything; she was way too emotional and scared to speak. She nodded her head against her mother and Jessica ran her fingers through Stephanie's hair like she used to do when Stephanie was younger. It would calm her and help her fall asleep. Stephanie had stopped crying and was just about to fall asleep when Jessica spoke up. "Stephanie?"
"Yes mommy." Stephanie replied timidly.
"When did this happen? And, who is the father?" Jessica asked.
Stephanie knew this question would come and she dreaded it. She took a deep breath and said. "It happened the day I found out about...him. So, nine weeks ago. Remember when I came through the front door and I said I needed some air...I ran to his apartment and well, it just happened."
"Apartment? He has his own apartment? Wait, we were in New Orleans at the time, who do you know who lives in New Orleans?"
"He...doesn't live there he was just renting it for...his job." Stephanie said trying her best to drag this out.
Jessica sat up and looked into Stephanie's eyes. "Who is he?"
Stephanie was beginning to sob again. "I can't tell you. He'll get in trouble! Please...just, drop it."
"Stephanie! I will not drop it! And what do you mean he'll get in trouble? You need to call him and tell him. He needs to step up and take responsibility for his actions!" Jessica said with a raised voice.
Stephanie just cried and shook her head.
Jessica took a breath to calm down. "I'm sorry I yelled." She said as she reached for Stephanie's hand and held it in hers. "Please, you can tell me who he is."
Stephanie looked down and whispered. "Evan."
"Evan? Evan Peters?!" Jessica asked in shock.
Stephanie nodded her head.
Jessica pulled herself together before Stephanie could look up. She remained calm and laid back down with Stephanie and continued to brush her hair with her fingers.
Stephanie soon fell asleep and Jessica slipped out carefully not to wake her and walked into the living room where Kathy was waiting.
"Is the wine in the refrigerator?" Jessica asked.
Kathy looked at Jessica with concern. "I put them in the freezer for a bit so they can cool faster."
Jessica walked into the kitchen; she grabbed a bottle of wine and quickly opened it with the corkscrew. She didn't bother with a glass, she just chugged it from the bottle.
"Whoa! Jessica! What's wrong?" Kathy said grabbing the bottle from her hand.
Jessica was breathing heavily; her anger rose up. "Can you stay with Stephanie? I have to go and take care of something."
"Of course I'll stay with her but Jessica! Tell me what's going on?" Kathy asked grabbing Jessica's hands.
"Stephanie's...pregnant." She whispered tears falling down her cheeks.
Kathy gasped. "Oh my god."
"Kathy please just, stay with Stephanie. I just need some...I need to go for a drive and clear my head."
"Alright go but please be careful." Kathy said gently.
Jessica hugged Kathy and nodded her head. "Oh and Kathy...please keep those bottles chilled. I'll be back soon."
Jessica drove around for a few minutes just trying her best to calm down; then finally made up her mind and drove to Evan's apartment.
She parked her car and got out and walked up to Evan's apartment. Jessica pounded on the door.
A young brunette woman opened the door. "Can I..." The young woman began but was cut off by Jessica.
"Is Evan home?"
"Ah, yes, one second." The young girl said.l with uncertainty. "Evan! It's for you!" She yelled into the apartment.
Evan came into view and noticed Jessica. He smiled and said. "Hey Jessica! Come in. What can I do....for...." He faltered as he noticed the look on Jessica's face.
Jessica crossed her arms over her chest. "So, who's your friend?"
"Um...this is Amanda. She's...my girlfriend. We just got together recently." Evan replied.
"Well, could you please tell her to leave for a few minutes. We need to talk."
Evan did as Jessica asked and once they were alone Jessica slapped Evan across the face.
"I'm going to kill you Peters!"
