Chapter 4

Ryan

It's my first day as a college professor as I only visited once for administrative work. Technically, it's the second day since I had taken leave yesterday because my sister came back from Australia after enjoying her vacation with friends. So I had to go pick her up from the airport.

My sister and I have been very close since childhood. Everyone in my family has spoiled her and always treats her like a princess. After picking her up from the airport, we spent the whole day catching up and watching her favourite Disney movies.

I went directly to the principal's office for some work that needs to be done first. When I got out of the office, I noticed many people watching me with curious and dreamy eyes. Haven't they seen a strikingly handsome man before? I guess not. A woman approached me batting her eyelashes with a pile of makeup sitting on her face.

"Jass, I'm a professor here too. I'm guessing you are the one who visited a day before yesterday for administration purposes and caused havoc in here with your charming looks." She said, still trying to look seductive.

"Yes, that's me." I replied politely.

"By the way, I can show you around." She grinned. She then leaned closer to whisper so only I could hear, "I can show you a lot more than I'm offering, outside the premises, you know." She winked.

"I don't think that would be necessary." I said smirking and left her before she could say anything else. To be honest, I don't want to waste my time talking to someone who is clearly interested in me when I am not even the slightest bit attracted to her. I never understand how people could be dating people they don't see a future with.

I was navigating my way towards my office first before heading to my first class, passing a few lecture halls, then  entering the other building and immediately taking a right at the end of the hallway. Out of nowhere, a girl came up running, startling me.

We bumped into each other if it weren't for her reflexes that she was able to keep up a tiny bit of distance between our lips. I couldn't see her face because within a matter of seconds she looked down. She is wearing a red top and light blue ripped jeans with black sandals. Her brown hair, put above her head in a ponytail and I can see some loose strands of hair framing her face. But still she hadn't looked up.

I almost didn't notice the various bookmarks laying at our feets. Maybe she likes to read.

“It wasn't intentional.” She said haphazardly—without once looking up at me—about to leave so I grabbed her hand, “Wait.”

“You dropped your bookmarks.” I pointed it out to her as I bent down to retrieve it but before I could do so she hurried away saying, “I know, you can keep it. B-bye.” What? I looked up only to find her taking steps backwards. And then without thinking she stepped on my hand with her freaking high heel. The bite down my lip to stop from screaming at the pain I felt. No girl has ever stepped on my hand.

“I'm really sorry. I need to go.” She just ran away leaving me on the ground collecting her things with my hand in pain. How could she? She ran fast. Is she an athlete?

I really wanted to see her face.

What are you thinking Ryan? Just go to your lecture hall to teach. She must be a student here and I can't think of a student like that. Exactly what was I even thinking?

Most importantly, she stepped on my freaking hand, it hurts.

Now, I need a pain reliever first.

I took one class at ten and now it's time for the second one & third one in room twenty-one. I reached the class and noticed students are settling down and some are even coming in talking with their friends. College life is the best. I missed my friends. I noticed a few girls looking at me awestruck, some even had blush covering their cheeks. When everyone settled down I started to introduce myself as this is my first class with them.

“Good Morning, everyone. I'm Ryan Reynolds but you should call me Mr. Reynolds. I'll be teaching you mathematics this semester. It’s your last semester in college so you need to work hard. I'll take tests weekly in order to keep track of you all whether you are getting everything or not. Anyone want to ask any questions?” I looked around to make sure no one is hesitant to ask questions.

A blond girl in the front row picked up her hand followed by so many till the back. But since she was in the front—who I noticed was scaring people away so she could keep two seats empty by her side—so I nodded at her.

“Mr. Reynolds, how old are you?” That's her question? I thought she’s a geek with the amount of stationery items sprawled out on her table.

“Why exactly?”

“I am thinking about becoming a professor myself,” her answer was met by certain snorts, light laughter and even some guys at the back clapped for her as if she paid them to do that, “I wondered how old you might be? Are you doing your PhD side by side?”

“No, I am not doing a PhD at the moment. Next question?”

I can't believe they are more interested in personal questions concerning habits, skincare, friends and family. A guy just asked me if I use makeup or not. That’s when I picked up the marker and started teaching. Enough of this.

I was almost done explaining the very first topic we would be covering when a soft knock at the door caught my attention.

A curly haired girl's head peeked in, her eyes focussed on me, “Sir, can we come in?” The girl requested, and I noticed that she was accompanied by another girl, “We lost track of time.”

“We're sorry that we are late. It won't happen again.” The girl behind her came into view. Wait, she’s the girl from the morning. She's in my class?

“Sure, come in.” I answered. The blond girl in the front gestured to them to join her. Oh so she had saved seats for them. Good. Now I can have a front row view of her.

The girl from morning, took out her notebook and pen. I kept staring at her. Why is she not looking up? I just have this urge to see her face. You'll ask me why? But I’ve no idea. Maybe I would like to see the culprit who decided to step on my hand with her heels without much remorse. She practically ignored me when everyone's been busy sparing me unwanted attention.

Finally, she looked up and her gaze settled on me, my heart rate picked up  rendering me speechless. Her sparkling hazel brown eyes were all I could see at the moment. She has angelic features. Indeed the epitome of beauty. Everything about her fascinates me. She is the most gorgeous girl I’ve ever seen. We continued staring at each other until she broke it and looked down at her notebook.

I should probably start teaching. Yes, I should do that right now. I explained everything from the beginning as they were late. While I was doing so, I went as far as stealing glances at her here and there.

A small smile tugged at my lips as I noticed her eating whenever she thought I was not paying attention. She's cute. I don’t think she’s interested in Mathematics at the moment.

I was solving an equation when I heard loud coughing, I turned around to find it's her. In quick succession, I took my water bottle from the podium and then dashed towards her. I opened the bottle and extended it to her.

She looked at me before taking the bottle from me.

After her coughing seemed alright, I questioned, “Are you okay?” My brows drew together.

“Yes, thank you.” She softly answered with a blush, handing my water bottle back.

“Next time, don't talk while eating.” I smirked at her, making her flabbergasted. What? She thought I wouldn't notice how sneakily she ate. She turned towards her friends, making me follow her gaze to notice the girl next to her looking rather embarrassed while the blond girl seemed as if she's watching a celebrity with all the shine in her eyes.

I noticed everyone staring at me as if I shouldn't be concerning on making sure the girl is alright.

I went back towards the podium and put down the water bottle. I asked if anyone had a doubt and some students raised their hands. I cleared their doubts one by one.

“Here's my email id in case you have any queries, mail them to me and I'll reply as soon as I get to them.” I announced as I wrote it down on the board. On second thought, I remember what happened this morning so I added, “And please refrain from asking questions concerning anything other than the subject I am teaching to you guys.” I heard a few groans.

While stealing a glance of her, I found her looking at someone by offering a tight lipped smile. I followed her gaze and saw a guy smiling at her. I don't like this guy.

“Okay so that's it for today. Since I don’t have the register just yet, you all can just pass on this sheet to everyone for the attendance.” I told the class as I passed the sheet to the student sitting in the corner in the front row.

Is it bad that I counted the students writing their names until her turn came up?

I noticed her taking a long time jotting everything down. Is she writing something for me? I am being delusional.

It's not like she's the last one to write her information on the sheet, it will be passed on to other students as well.

She finally passes on the sheet to the girl who came with her, who proceeds to pass it to the blond haired girl who passed it on ahead. Oh, so she wrote down their information as well.

She stood up from her seat, followed by the curly haired girl who came with her. When they was about to leave I finally called her out for her, “Wait!” I don't even know her name yet.

Thankfully she turned around and noticed that I was referring to her. Her friend left so she advanced towards me making me damn nervous all of a sudden.

Control yourself man.

When she stood in front of me, I forgot how to speak. I kept staring at her. She cleared her throat to get my attention.

I finally came out of whatever spell her presence put on me.

“I have your things.” I stated simply before I bent down to get her bookmarks and sticky notes out of my bag which is on the floor by the podium. I have put everything in a small paper bag which I extended towards her to take.

She looked at me then at the paper bag. And continued to repeat the action a few times. Then she kept staring at me with an expression of utter disbelief.

After a few awkward seconds passed away, I realized that she must not remember me as she didn't look up once. So I elaborated, “You dropped all of your bookmarks. In the morning?” I reminded her which in turn made her mouth hang open.

She looked down at my shoes...?

“I...” She appeared to be lost for words.

“Is your hand okay?” She questioned as her eyes roamed my hands in concern.

“I thought they exaggerated the pain of someone stepping with a heel but I was proved wrong.” I was proved wrong. Heels are deadly weapons. My hand still hurts even after I sprayed the pain reliever.

“I’ll send you the ointment really quickly. I’m extremely sorry about that. It won't happen again, ever.” With that she took her stuff from my hand and then she ran away like she did in the morning. What is it with her and the running away thing?

One thing is for sure, cute or not I'll make her pay for stepping on my hand and running away not one but two times when I wasn't done.
