Chapter 28

Jennifer
Mr. Reynolds set my bangs which have dried by now, "Come," He said softly and then took my hand in his-which felt like the most natural thing to do-and we navigated our way to the costume store through the map I was holding.
I changed into a simple black turtleneck top with long sleeves, long black skirt with slit in the front and black high boots. He paid for it even though I tried to make him go look for something while I sneakily paid, however he was one step ahead as he was able to see through my tricks.
"Let's leave this place." I suggested after stepping out of the store. Seriously, I might literally faint if Mr. Lee spotted me with Mr. Reynolds this time.
Even though I bought a mask and scarf to cover up, I am still not feeling any better. I can't take risks. Mr. Lee took Mr. Reynolds name for god's sake. Should I tell him? I don't want to be superstitious but I believe if I took Mr. Lee's name out loud he might actually appear before us along with his family.
"What's wrong? What happened when I wasn't around? Did something bad happen? Tell me and I'll fix it." He said pleadingly as he cupped my face over the mask.
"Nothing happened. I'm tired, that's all." I would need to tell him about my fake boyfriend story as well which I don't want to bring up anytime soon.
"If you don't want to tell me then that's okay just don't lie to me that you are okay when you are clearly not." He shook his head and walked ahead leaving me, making me follow him by a little run. Oh man, he walks fast.
This is ridiculous. Why am I keeping a secret when Mr. Lee would probably ask Mr. Reynolds about him being at the Adventure Park anyway?
I should tell him so I grabbed his hand to stop him from walking any further and bridged the gap, "Listen. I'm sorry. I wasn't sure how to tell you. But Mr. Lee spotted me here along with his family."
"Adam is here." He groaned as if he's shocked. "I thought he said he won't be able to make it because his daughter was sick or something."
"How do you know that?" I whispered and looked around to make sure no concerned person was here.
"I gave him three tickets." My mouth hung open. He gave tickets to him knowing we might run into them. How confident or stupid is he?
"You had more tickets but you said you only had two." I countered.
"I gave it to him way before you saw the tickets. I had five in total." That makes sense. But he should have told me that earlier. I look down at my shoes. Regret over the past is wasted energy.
"Did he say something?" He put his fingers under my chin and tilted my head up to look at him.
"He said he saw you with me but thankfully this guy I met there told him that he was with me all this time and pretended to be my fake boyfriend." I looked down again. This is so messed up. If it weren't for my crush on him then we would have never been in this situation as I would never go out with a professor.
He's in this mess because of me.
"So everything's settled then, right? If he asks me then I'll just say his eyesight is getting weak. You need to calm down. You'll probably never meet this guy again so no need to worry." He put both his hands on my mask-covered cheeks to make me look at him. I wanted to show him my hand with the said guy's number on it but I decided not to. I can make one of dad's trusted men return the jacket to him in my stead anonymously. Brilliant! No need to meet him in person ever again.
"Trust me in this disguise no one will be able to recognize you. Wait, I should buy a mask as well." I nodded in his hold. He didn't let go, instead his gaze went from my left eye to my right eye before he pulled out his handkerchief and started to rub it under each of my eyes gently. "There. No more smeared mascara now." I smiled thankfully at him.
Ten minutes later, we were in front of the Haunted House but I was still skeptical about bumping into Mr. Lee again, no matter what.
"I don't want to go in anymore." Even though we were lucky earlier, that doesn't mean that we will be lucky forever.
Ria must want to go there as well and meeting them again with ghosts surrounding us is not my cup of tea. The horror of both ghosts and them finding out something which even I don't know if exists.
Mr. Reynolds clearly said he has someone on his mind. Maybe he will visit this place with her in the future. While I would be with my husband crying over my standstill life.
"But you were excited about the Haunted House." He pointed out the obvious. I was excited only until I saw Mr. Lee. If he were to find out that I am out here with Mr. Reynolds then he might alert the authorities.
"I'm not anymore. Let's get out of here. Please." I sighed.
"Is it because of Adam?" He looked concerned with a hint of helplessness.
"No, just tired." He nodded, still looking not satisfied with my answer so I added, "After I fell into that fountain, I just want to leave this place." He nodded in understanding.
As we walked towards the exit, we noticed the crowd was gathered in front of the Ferris Wheel so I had to push through the crowd to look as well.
Mr. Reynolds, like a gentleman, put his arms around me as cover to protect me from anybody touching and pushing me and a strange sense of comfort washed through me. I had to stop myself from pulling his arms to wrap it around my middle.
He smells so good.
His proximity is slowly turning me into jelly.
His breath on my neck is making me tremble.
I can practically hear my heartbeat in my ears.
My cheeks must be maroon by now.
Enough, Jen.
I shook my head to get the thoughts out of my head and then I noticed a man with fake blood covering the side of his mouth going down on his knee in front of a woman who is wearing a red crown atop her head leaving trails of fake blood in her blond hair, face, neck and then her white dress.
I stopped in my tracks as I noticed her looking down with astonishment and taking a few steps back in shock while people chanted, 'Say yes' like crazy.
For a moment, it looked like she fainted when she fell to her knees but soon she started crying.
I never understand why people cry over getting surprised by an engagement ring. Probably because I'll never see the day when the love of my life would go down on his knee to ask me to spend the rest of my life with him. That's the terms of marriage for business purposes, they don't have an option for a proposal to ask first.
I looked down at my hand and I can practically see the engagement ring sitting on my ring finger even if it's not there physically but soon it will be and I won't get to experience this kind of joy which comes with a twist of happy tears.
My gaze unintentionally went to Mr. Reynolds standing beside me who's also looking at the scene with curiosity. I looked back at the scene noticing that she nodded her head as her sobbing wasn't helping her to form words to say a 'Yes'.
I looked back at Mr. Reynolds and noticed him looking at me with an emotion that I couldn't decipher. He then extended his hand in front of me which I took without any hesitation. We walked towards the lockers first to fetch the stuffed toys.
I wanted to ask Mr. Reynolds, who do you have on your mind? But I need to respect the boundary which will always be there no matter how friendly we are now. The truth is no matter if I have a crush on him or not, he is my professor and I am his student. Anything which attempts to cross that line shall be deemed forbidden. I won't risk it.
