Chapter Twenty: Taking Chances

Katie

DING.

The elevator doors sprung open, as Travis and I sprung apart.

He scratched his neck and looked at his feet awkwardly, ears turning red.

I smiled to myself, and felt my cheeks go hot. We stood there sheepishly for an entire minute, wondering what had just happened, until a door closed on the hallway, causing us to snap up and stumble into the elevator.

"Soooo... Where are we going again?"Travis wondered.

"Up," I replied simply and then pressed the button for the rooftop.

"Um are we allowed to go there?"

"So many questions! No, silly, of course not. But we are anyways."

He stood there silently and I dared him with my eyes to ask how. Unfortunately, he didn't take the bait, just smirked and shifted his weight.

We stared into each other's eyes for what seemed like for hours but was in reality only minutes.

When we had reached the top of the hotel, the elevator doors opened once more.

"Close your eyes," I told Travis quietly.

He followed my directions and whispered back, "Okay."

"Walk forward out of the elevator."

He did as he was told.

Right then, I took my chance.

Travis

What was she going to do? I wondered as Katie gave me orders and I obeyed. I couldn't see a thing, but I wanted to know why the roof was so important. Because if it was important to her, then it would be important to me.

Suddenly, I gasped.

My left hand was no longer empty.

There was another hand holding it.

Full of hope, I tilted my head down and opened my eyes for a split second.

Yes.

I was right.

Katie Gardener was holding my hand.

And it felt so right.

She pulled me forward slowly until I felt a breeze drift by my face.

I guess we're outside, I thought to myself. That would make sense, because we are on the roof. I breathed in deep, and smelled a hint of greenery. Plants, I guessed. Of course Katie would want to go to the roof to be with the plants. Not that I minded or anything. I just wanted to be with Katie. I couldn't see light from behind my eyelids, so I assumed that it was dark outside. I did know that there were small garden lights to keep people from falling into the plants, because when I had looked at my hand, I had seen the lights.

Katie stopped pulling me forward, but her hand never left mine.

She moved, and I felt a hand touch my cheek.

I opened my eyes.

Katie

What I was going to do would be the struggle people around the world face every day. Only for them, there isn't a life at stake.

"Travis." We stood at the top of the building, surrounded by my favorite thing, greenery. I had my left hand on his cheek, and my right hand holding his.

"Katie," He replied. It wasn't a question. He said this like the name meant so much more to him than just five letters next to each other.

"I- I have something to say to you," I told him.

He started to speak, but I never found out what he was saying.

I was too busy kissing him.

Travis

Even though I don't exactly follow the rules, I still enjoy reading books. And I've read a number of romance novels too. But when they describe a kiss like fireworks, they are wrong. Because it is so much more than that.

"I have something to tell-" I said but Katie cut me off.

By standing up on her toes, and pressing her lips to mine.

The sensation in my brain was so much more than fireworks. It was everything I loved about Katie, all at once.

Her shrieking with joy as I chased her around camp.

Her singing loudly and off-key at the campfire, eyes lit up as she forgot about everything else but that moment.

Her laughing at a friend at meals, her green eyes meeting mine eyes from across the pavilion.

Her ability to immediately befriend someone, like she had done with Amber.

Her sneaking up to the tree to get the Golden Apple.

Her standing so close to me in the forrest the day this all began.

Katie

I smiled against Travis' lips. I mentally scolded for not having done this sooner. My hand was still on his cheek and his arm were wrapped around my waist.

Ever since we had walked out of the elevator, we had been holding hands.

On the roof of that hotel, I felt like I was flying. I was on top of the world, the universe. I was infinite.
