Chapter Twenty
"Patients say it all the time: 'Tell me straight up. I just want to know what's going on. Tell me, I can handle it.' We don't dodge your questions because we're mean. We do it because when you say you want the truth, you have no idea what you're talking about. They say the truth will set you free. What the hell do they know? The truth is horrible. Frightening. The truth is more than you can bear. We're supposed to be straight with you, so be careful what you ask for when you walk into a hospital. Because when you find out what's really going on, you may never recover"
"i caught her smiling and that's what i do it for"
Cristina and Beck were checking on Paul Dawson, who still hadn't woken up. Owen came by. "Shepherd said his wife's still unconscious, too", he informed them. "What did you do with the kid?" Beck asked him.
"He was in peds overnight, just so social services didn't haul him off. His grandmother comes today"
"Good"
"I mean, why is he still out? You said that he would wake up when you reversed his hypothermia"
"Yeah, I said he might", Cristina corrected. "Or he might eight hours later or eight days later. If it's any more than that, we have a problem, but not until then".
"You talk to Russell about it?"
"He knows about the eight days thing"
"Maybe you should just check in with him. You said yourself that he's not supervising you that much lately"
"There's no news. If we go to him with this information, he'll think we've lost our minds"
"Well, then he can come talk to me". He left the room.
Beck scoffed and rolled her eyes.
Aurora caught up with Owen in the hall. "Hey, I thought I was gonna see you last night?" she said.
"I know. I got caught up with a patient"
"It's a shame. I wore that shirt you told me not to wear when we're arguing because it makes you forget what your point was"
"I can't believe I missed that"
"I could wear it again tonight". She studied his face. "You look distracted. Are you still thinking about the kid?"
"His parents still haven't woken up"
"I know. You have to give it time"
"My talk was a viral sensation", Callie said, leaning over to Jackson. "Cartilage is trending. Because of me". "I couldn't be happier", he replied.
"A cartilage regeneration lab would be a huge boon for the hospital"
"I am not an ATM. I have one vote just like you do and Arizona does"
"Oh, no. Arizona has to vote for me 'cause she's my wife. And your vote is like a vote and a half. I'll vote for myself. Now that is a solid voting block"
"You put a lot of thought into this, huh?"
"Is this how it works?" Alex asked, crouching between them. "You all whisper to each other in your board meetings about your pet projects, and that's where all the money goes?" "That's exactly how it works", Richard piped up. "That is not how it works", Jackson argued. "Everybody's supposed to submit their proposals in writing. You can't have people bugging board members while they're trying to work". "You're sitting in a chair", Callie scoffed. "I need money for my orphan thing. I want to take it global", Alex stated. "You see what you've done?" Jackson said to Callie. Meredith and Cristina entered the room and sat down. "Who cancelled my valve replacement?" Cristina questioned. "Hunt cancelled half of everybody's day", Richard said. Callie nudged Lucy who was staring into space, her eyes half-lidded. "Hey, you okay?" she whispered.
"Huh? Yeah, why?"
"You just look really out of it, like, tired"
"Gee, thanks, Callie"
"No, I didn't mean..."
"Thank you for coming, everyone", Owen said, coming in, carrying a box followed by Arizona and April. "Sorry we had to rearrange your schedule, but this is important". "We've got two Syrian doctors here", Arizona explained. "They used to be GPs, but now they're operating in a field hospital in a war zone".
"We were planning on teaching them surgical procedures they could do with limited resources, but it turns out they have way less to work with than we anticipated"
"Just give 'em more stuff", Alex said. "When it runs out in two weeks, they'll be right back where they started", Richard pointed out. "He wants to help them function with what they know they have". "Which is this", April said, holding the box. "So, we need to be able to do the procedures on this list using only what is in this box", Owen said. The attendings got up to look at the list. Lucy tried to get up but stumbled and Alex caught her. "Hey, you okay?" he said.
"Yeah, I'm fine". She moved away from him to look at the list.
"Are you kidding me? There's no way", Cristina said, reading it. "There has to be. We gotta figure it out", Owen said.
"Okay, so they can debride the wounds with a basic instrument set, but now they're faced with a huge risk of infection", Callie said. "Well, I guess wound vacs are out of the question then", Jackson said. "Simple wet-to-dry dressings might work?" April suggested. "No", Lucy said. "They'd have to change those out three times a day. They would use their entire gauze supply with one patient". "Sugar", Richard said.
"What?"
"It's not in the box, but they may have it around. It's an osmotic dressing that allows to avoid multiple dressing changes"
"Okay. Well, somebody go find out if they still have sugar", Callie said. April rushed off and Owen entered the room. "So, anybody ready to start teaching?" he asked. "Me and Lucy", Callie replied. "We can do fracture repairs". "Yeah, you can put me down", Jackson added. "I got a blade I can use for skin grafting". "Great. Get to the lab", Owen said.
Jackson, Lucy and Callie were in the skills lab with the Syrian doctors. "Okay, so you want to place the screws medial to the tibial crest so you don't interfere with intravascular bundle", Callie explained. All of a sudden, Lucy felt light-headed and she stumbled, bracing herself against the table.
"Lucy, you need to go home and sleep"
"I'm fine"
"That wasn't a suggestion. That was an order. Go home. Now"
Lucy sighed and left the room. She found the nearest on-call room and sat on the bed. She reached into her lab coat pocket and pulled out her pill bottle. She shook it, hearing no sound, realising it was empty. She threw it across the room and put her head in her hands. She pulled out her phone and started texting.
Beck was coming out of Paul's room when Owen approached her. "He's still not awake?" he questioned.
"No, not yet. We gave him a bolus of D50. We'll see if that helps"
"Why didn't anyone talk to me first?"
"Because we talked to Russell about it, like you asked us to"
"But you all knew that I was concerned about this case"
"We can't spend every minute of every day worrying about your personal feelings about this case. We all have jobs to do. I'm doing mine, why can't you do yours? You need three highly trained surgeons supervising one man's recovery? Do you know how many patients there are in this hospital? This man is not special"
"It shouldn't be news to you that we work as a team at this hospital"
"Here we go again, you decide what you want to hear. You pick and choose what suits you best. This is perfectly straightforward post-op care. You don't need to be involved at all"
"Tomorrow, you, Yang, Russell, myself, will round on Paul together, alright?"
"Are you serious?"
"I am"
Bailey rushed over. "Dr Hunt, I need to speak with you", she said.
"Can you give me a moment?"
"It has to be now"
"That's fine, we're done here", Beck stated.
After admitting Ethan so he could stay the night, Aurora came in to check on him. "So, you got your own TV, they serve some chocolate pudding that's not half bad, and I can go and see if I can hunt down some comic books, okay?" she said, sitting down on the bed. He looked down.
"Hey. What's the matter?"
"Dr Hunt told the nurse I was sick"
"Yeah, you're fake sick. The nurse knows that. All the doctors know it. We're all just pretending so you can stay here tonight. There's nothing wrong with you"
"Is it fake with my mom and dad?"
"No. No, sweetie, it's not. I wish it was"
"My dad's still not awake?"
"No, he's not"
"Is he ever gonna wake up?"
"I don't know"
Owen watched them talk from outside the room.
The board and Owen were in the conference room. "Bailey said the second patient isn't responding to antibiotics", Owen said. "So she's going to need surgery". "I just operated on the third", Richard said. "He's hypotensive and still pretty unstable".
"Once Murphy's identified all her patients for the day, then we'll get them in here, make sure no one else is infected"
"We're gonna need to make some kind of statement", Jackson said. "Before this gets out on its own", Derek added. Bailey entered the room. "Hey, the first patient, Joyce Basche, she didn't make it", she informed them. "I thought that the surgery would get rid of the infection, but...". "You need to get cultures on the other two right away", Arizona interjected. "And we need to make sure that we're using the right antibiotics so that this doesn't get out of control".
"Okay". She turned to leave just as Leah and Meredith came in. "We just lost Joyce Basche".
"Dr Bailey...", Meredith began.
"No, she's her patient. She should know"
"Leah checked all the charts. She was only on two of the patients that got the infection. She never touched the third one"
"What, is that supposed to reassure me? A woman just died"
"It couldn't have been Leah. The only doctor who touched all three patients was you"
"We're gonna need to get legal down here", Jackson said, getting up and going over to the phone. "Wait. Anything could've caused this kind of infection", Bailey said. "Yeah, no...", Arizona tried. "Well, we know that, until there's an investigation...".
"No, I gotta go 'cause I have two more people..."
"Owen?" Richard said. "Dr Webber will deal with them", Owen said. "Yeah, this is Dr Avery", Jackson said into the phone. "Get me Joelle Geller from legal down here, conference room two". Richard left the room. "I will go over my notes", Bailey said. "Sit down, Dr Bailey", Owen said.
"No. My patients are in danger"
"Dr Webber will take care of them", Derek said.
"I haven't even told Joyce's husband that she didn't make it"
Owen nodded at Meredith and she left to do it with Leah.
"I know the man! I don't need Grey to tell him that I killed his wife!"
"Dr Bailey, please sit down"
"What are you saying?"
"I'm asking you to sit down"
Jackson shut the door and she sat down.
