Chapter Seventeen
"To a critically ill patient, an organ transplant means a new start, a second chance. But the body is designed to fight off any outside invader. Even one that's trying to save it. Because a transplant doesn't guarantee that it's an easier life. There's a threat that the body will reject the organ outright. The transplant process is very scary. A patient goes from worrying about getting an organ to worrying if the organ will be rejected. The anxiety continues until they can finally open their eyes after surgery and see that their gift has been accepted"
"and the day that you'll watch the death of the sun"
The new board of directors, Derek, Cristina, Beck, Meredith, Callie, Arizona and Aurora were in a conference room. "Jackson Avery really has a bigger say than any of us in running this hospital?" Arizona questioned. "That can't be true. Can it?" Cristina asked. "Well, he's a voting member of the management team and he also represents the Harper Avery Foundation", Derek said. "And their 175 million bucks", Callie added. "As opposed to our $15 million apiece", Arizona said. "According to Stan, not only does he have the deciding vote, he can veto ours", Derek informed them. "That is ridiculous. He's a fellow", Cristina pointed out. "So are you", Aurora said.
"But he's a plastics fellow. And I'm me"
"Okay, there's no need to overreact", Beck said. "It's Jackson. He's not some corporate stranger. He's one of us". "No, you're right. He's a smart kid", Derek agreed. "He's gonna follow our lead". "No. No. We made this plan", Callie said. "We pulled it together. Look, I'm grateful to Harper Avery for an infusion of cash, but I'm not gonna let some, some...". "Plastics fellow?" Cristina suggested.
"Plastics fellow tell me how to run my service 'cause his mommy said he could"
"Preach", Arizona said.
"Okay, so we're agreed the peds and adult ERs will be combined to save on personnel?" Arizona clarified. They all agreed. "I'm sorry, guys", Jackson said, entering the room with a pink box and files in his hands. "I was running on time, and then my last rounds' patient turned into a crier". He put the pink box on the table, opening it, revealing pastries. "Pow", he said softly. Everyone was silent. "We were discussing the reopening of the ER", Beck explained. "And the trauma department". "Oh, yes", he said. "I'm not ready for that just yet". "If you need more time with the material, we can go ahead...", Derek said.
"No, no, I've... I've read it. It's just that the foundation feels that the ER is not a forgone conclusion. They need a site visit, a chance to look over the numbers. It could be a month before a decision"
"Okay. The foundation knows we plan on getting our Level I trauma designation back, right?" Arizona asked.
"They know that's the idea, yeah"
"It's the fact", Callie corrected. "I think we should table this until we can bring in Owen", Aurora suggested. "He'll have a lot of thoughts on this, too". "That's the other thing", Jackson said. "What thing?" Derek questioned.
"Okay. Since we are starting fresh, the thought is that new leadership would be good for morale"
"What, like, chief of surgery?" Aurora said. "Oh, no way", Callie said. "Firing Owen?" Meredith said. "Okay, we're not firing Owen", Aurora said. "Okay, well, the foundation thinks that...", Jackson began. "Your mother", Callie interjected.
"The Harper Avery Foundation..."
"Your mother, Avery. Just say it"
"It's a recommendation"
"It's an inappropriate one", Aurora said. "Tell your mom that. This is bull...", Callie snapped. "And this is going nowhere. I have surgery", Arizona said. "Yeah. Me, too. We should come back to this", Derek said. "You know, I don't care who's giving you your marching orders, this thing with Owen is not happening", Aurora said. "Well, say what you want, but without the Harper Avery Foundation, none of us are here", Jackson said. "And we appreciate that", Meredith said. "But no one expected them to come in and start dictating policy".
"Yeah, well, no one asked you to sue the hospital into bankruptcy either"
"For the plane crash that killed Lexie, Mark and Kelly?" Beck said.
"Beck..."
"No"
"Owen", Aurora said, approaching him at the OR board. "Just a second", he replied.
"Owen, they're talking about replacing you. Ruth, excuse us, please"
"What? Why? Who is?"
"Jackson. But we're not gonna let that happen. I just didn't want you to hear a rumour and think I didn't tell... I'm gonna talk to Catherine Avery"
"You're not gonna do anything. I am"
Beck overheard Jackson and Owen arguing and rushed over. "And now I hear this?" Owen questioned. "Alright. Calm down", Jackson said.
"Don't tell me to calm down!"
"Okay, why don't you guys take this somewhere else?" Beck suggested.
"Oh, this is coming from you, too? You're all just talking about a new chief?"
"No, okay? No. It was brought up, and we tabled it. Aurora fought for you"
"You tabled it? You shouldn't even be talking about it"
"Listen, this is a decision we have...", Jackson tried. "Jackson, stop", Beck interjected.
"I'm just trying to explain..."
"I'll explain, alright? You can go"
He reluctantly walked a couple inches away.
"Listen, there are politics here. You know that better than I do. We're just trying to find our way. Just sit tight"
"I am through sitting tight. I am through looking like an idiot while you all lie to me"
"We're not lying to you"
"You all quit on me. You're a liar"
"We are doing the best we can"
"And I'm this poor sucker running around trying to fix this mess that you all made!"
"Don't you dare! You do not want to get into whose responsibility this is. You don't want to get into who's responsible for all of this. Why my best friend is dead. So don't you dare pin this on us!"
Owen turned back to Jackson. "Well, I can make this decision easier for you. I quit"
Owen was outside, getting ready to leave. "Owen, what happened?" Aurora asked, running out to him. "Talk to me".
"Nothing happened, I'm just... I'm done. I should've been done a long time ago"
"Okay, what are you talking about?"
"Beck is right. This is all on me"
"She's just upset, she's grieving. No one blames you"
"Well, somebody does. And as long as that's true, I... I don't see how I can be effective here". He got into his car and drove off.
"Sweetheart. Owen..."
Lucy was in the elevator when Jack got in. "I'm gonna need to meet you again tonight. I'm almost out", she stated, looking straight ahead.
"You're going through these things awfully fast"
"I'm sorry, do I pay you to judge me?"
"I'm not judging. I'm just saying, I could get you something stronger if you think those aren't enough"
"How much stronger?"
"It's a pretty significant jump but with the amount you're going through, you shouldn't feel much different"
"Right"
"So, is that a yes or...?"
The elevator doors opened and Alex entered the elevator. "Hey", he greeted, kissing her cheek. "Hey", she replied. "Alex, do you know Jack?"
"Yeah, hi". He shook his hand and smiled at Lucy, she smiled back. It faded once he turned away. She made eye contact with Jack and nodded at him.
Alex and Aurora led Jaylen's parents up to dialysis to meet Jaylen. "What the...", her father said upon discovering Jaylen kissing a boy who was also on dialysis. "Who is this?" "God. It's Thelonious, Dad", Jaylen replied. "We've only been getting dialysis for, like, an entire year together".
"I'd be more comfortable if you were in your own chair"
"It's bad enough to be in kidney failure. Now you're gonna suck all the fun out of it?"
"I'm just asking..."
"Honey, let's not fight. Not now", her mother interjected. "It's too big a day". "Oh, no. What?" Jaylen asked. "We found a kidney, Jaylen", Aurora informed her. "No more dialysis", her mother added. "Oh, my God, Theo. I'm getting a kidney", Jaylen said excitedly. "Sweet", Theo deadpanned.
"Yeah. Sweet"
"You can't keep throwing that plane crash in his face", Aurora said to Beck as they entered the room where Callie had called an emergency meeting. "Don't make this my fault", Beck said. "He walked out. You shouldn't have told him". "Wait. Wait. You told him?" Callie questioned. "That he might be getting fired? Of course I did", Aurora replied. "Nothing was decided, and besides, we weren't gonna let Avery get rid of Hunt", Derek pointed out.
"Jackson clearly has his own agenda. Warning Owen is the least we can do. We went behind his back long enough"
"Well, there's no need to warn him anymore because he quit", Beck said. "Aurora, we should probably keep what's said in here private", Arizona said. "Well, then count me out", Aurora said, leaving the room. Beck sighed and went after her.
"Aurora", she called out, making her stop. "When is this gonna stop?"
"When is what gonna stop?"
"You, throwing everything away for him"
"I'm not throwing anything away"
"Really? You can't even keep confidential, important board meeting information a secret from him without almost having a heart attack. I mean, seriously, what is the matter with you?"
"What's the matter with me? You are the one who won't stop throwing the plane crash back in his face every chance you get"
"Because I hate him! I hate him. And I'm sorry if that makes you angry or upset but I hate him. He is the reason she's dead, he is the reason we're in this mess in the first place"
"No, he's not"
"Oh, he's not? Okay, who put us on that plane just to cut the budget? Because I'm pretty sure it was him"
"Stop it"
"I can't understand you. How can you forgive him? After everything he's done, how can you even look at him?"
"Are you serious?"
"Our best friend is dead and you don't even care. He's all that matters apparently"
"That is so unfair"
"I wish he was dead"
"You don't mean that"
"Yes, I do. Because if he was dead, we would've been on a safer plane and we all would've come back alive and Kelly would still be here. Your brother would still be here"
"That is enough! God, you are unbelievable. You can't even try to understand someone that isn't exactly like you. That's why you treated Jackson like dirt and strung him along until you got bored. You have no idea how to care or love another human being. You don't know what that's like. You're a selfish bitch and you always have been"
Beck stormed off, tears in her eyes.
"They're going to get the donor heart and lung as we speak", Cristina explained to Mr Schultz. "We should have you in the OR sometime this afternoon". "Not a minute too soon", Mr Schultz replied. "You should've seen what I coughed up this morning. I swear to God, the thing had hands". "Dr Yang, I was hoping I'd catch you", Herman said, stopping in the doorway.
"Hey, you get your fat head out of my door. Bad enough I gotta watch you go by my window eighty times a day while you walk your stupid laps"
"I just want to know if Dr Yang knows about the pepperoni pizza you've been smuggling in here"
"Snitch all you want. I'm not gonna be here much longer"
"No kidding? You're dying. Hey, there is a God, and he's heard my prayers"
"Mr Schultz is getting a heart-lung transplant", Beck informed him.
"A heart? Well, he doesn't need a heart. He's got junky lungs. I've been on this machine for three months, and you're giving that bastard my heart?"
"You're not looking too good, Herman", Mr Schultz commented. "Somebody might be dying today".
"Shut up"
"Mr Crump, please calm down", Cristina said, walking over to him. "Mr Schultz's heart is compromised because of the stress caused by his pulmonary hypotension. So a heart-lung transplant is the...".
"You're gonna have pulmonary hypotension unless you get a supervisor down here"
"That doesn't make any sense", Heather pointed out.
"A supervisor, now!"
"Absolutely. Right away", Cristina said.
"Yeah". He walked off in a huff.
"So why do they hate each other so much?" Heather asked as they left the room. "They were neighbours", Beck said. "Crump's wife left him for Schultz, like, 30 years ago".
"No"
"Yes. She ended up leaving him, too, for some other guy in the neighbourhood"
"No"
"Yes"
"No"
"Can your mind be blown on your own time?" Cristina said. "Right now I have to talk with my supervisor".
"Well, you own the hospital now. So doesn't that make you the supervisor?"
"It does. So I will have that conversation with myself"
"Well, should I, like, stick around for that or..."
Cristina walked off.
"Oh"
"I'm guessing that was a no", Beck said.
"This is where you should check your meds off every day. Okay?" Aurora explained to Jaylen, holding up a chart. "You'll start your mornings with prednisolone and mycophenolate at 8am. Then follow that with fk-506 at 10am. And 10pm, those are for every day. Then you'll also be on trimethoprim-sulfa three times a week". "Now you're just making up words", Jaylen replied. "Look, you have to take them no matter what, alright?" Alex said. "Or you'll lose the kidney. You can't miss a dose". "She won't", her mother promised. "Fine. I'll do whatever you just said", Jaylen agreed. "Okay, the meds, they can cause pretty dramatic mood swings, hair thinning, weight gain, diarrhoea, acne", Aurora informed them. "I mean, they don't always happen, but if they do, don't be alarmed".
Jaylen had locked herself in the bathroom. "What's wrong?" Alex asked as he and Aurora entered Jaylen's room. "She locked herself in there", Leah informed them. "Jaylen, sweetie. It's okay. Come on out", her mother reassured her. Alex knocked on the door. "Jaylen, it's Dr Karev", he said. "Look, Jaylen, come on". "We know it's scary," Aurora added.
"Just come out and we'll talk. You can ask me whatever you want"
"It's the silent treatment", her father stated. "She won't crack. Once we took her phone from her. She didn't speak to us for seven days". Aurora leaned into the door and heard typing sounds. "She's talking to somebody", she said. Alex left the room.
"It's called a domino transplant", Heather explained to Mr Schultz and Herman. "Because you guys are the same blood type, we will put the new heart and lungs into Mr Schultz, and then take Mr Schutlz's original heart and give it to Mr Crump". "So his heart in my body? Nothing doing", Herman replied. "It's the best solution in this case", Cristina stated.
"The best solution is a 62-year-old getting a 70-year-old's hand-me-downs?"
"Technically, all donor hearts are hand-me-downs", Heather pointed out. Beck nudged her. "Mr Schultz's heart is 80% functional. Yours is only 10%", she said. "Yeah, you hear that? 80%", Mr Schultz said. "You'd be lucky to get a ticker like this one". "I'd be lucky if you dropped dead right now and I got the fresh heart", Herman commented. "Mr Crump, you should really consider this...", Cristina tried.
"Look, I would rather croak than have this bastard's old lump of meat in my chest". He got up.
"Hey", Mr Schultz said, smiling. "This day just keeps getting better and better".
"Yeah, right. It's great"
"Hey, sir, you need to sit down", Heather said, attempting to help him.
"No, I need to get out of this room"
"Sir, calm down. Just..."
"Please. Get out of my..."
Alex was texting Jaylen emoticons, trying to pretend to be Theo. "You sent her an emoticon of a bee and an ice cube?" Aurora questioned. "It means "be chill". And come out of the bathroom", he explained. The door opened and she came out. "I know it's you", she stated. "Theo would never text emoticons". "I told you you should've let me do it", Aurora said to Alex. "Just... Give me five minutes, and then I will never bother you about it again", Alex said. "Okay. Five minutes, but in here, with Dr Sloan", Jaylen said.
He nodded and Aurora went into the bathroom with her, shutting the door behind them.
"I know you're scared, but you need this kidney", Aurora said.
"At least with dialysis, I won't go bald, get fat, and poop my pants"
"That's not the solution, and you know it"
"Can't I, like, take the next one? I'm, like, not ready for this"
"Yes, you are. Look, Jaylen, I know right now it seems like this boy is the only thing in the world that matters to you. And he can still be important if that's what you want. But this kidney is a good thing, and you need to take the good things when they're in front of you, because if you don't, someone else will"
"So you're saying, take this kidney so someone else doesn't get there first?"
"Yeah"
Aurora opened the door and they both came out of the bathroom. Alex looked at Aurora and she nodded. "Let's get her prepped", he said. "Don't leave her side". "Got it", Leah said.
Jackson was carrying around the Pegasus protocols and dropped at the nurses station where Richard was standing and Callie and Lucy stood nearby. "Are you okay there? You look a little overwhelmed", Richard said. "Anything I can help you with?" "Can you read everything in my arms and own this hospital?" Jackson asked him. "You actually gonna look at those protocols or just keep carrying 'em around?" Bailey questioned, approaching the nurses station.
"Right. Your hernia. I'm gonna get you an answer just as soon as I..."
"Too late. I already did it, my way"
"That's not... Bailey, you shouldn't..."
"Well, you couldn't make a decision, so I made it myself. You gonna get rid of me now like you did Hunt?"
"I didn't get rid of Hunt. Why..."
"Sign this", Cristina said, coming over with Beck and placing a document in front of him.
"What is this?"
"Authorisation for a domino transplant"
"Yes, why am I..."
"Because when you anoint yourself king, it comes with certain responsibilities. You have to sign this"
"I need to know what this is first"
"Well, we could take the time to explain it to you how a heart-lung domino transplant works, but by then, both our patients will be dead", Beck stated.
"I know how a damn domino works. Hey, April. Here, take these"
"What are they?" April said.
"Hunt left before he could coordinate the recovery teams for your DCD patient. So it's just a list of which organs are going where"
"Yeah, well, he's not my patient anymore, per his request..."
"Just sign this", Cristina interjected. "Just handle it, please", Jackson said to April through gritted teeth. April snatched the list and walked off. Callie and Lucy peered over Jackson's shoulder. "Hey, make sure you sign your own name, not your mom's", Callie said. "Really?" he said. "Avery", Alex said, coming over with Aurora.
"What?"
"I want to know who the hell sent my kidney flying coach to Seattle when I sent two surgeons to pick it up"
"Wait. What are you talking about?"
"He's talking about the protocols", Bailey said, reaching for one of the binders. "Look... Pegasus policy states, look, "Donated kidneys coming from outside a certain radius will be flown unaccompanied, saving personnel hours". So when the other hospital called, the nurse just told 'em to put it on a plane. Told you they were stupid rules. You should read 'em sometime".
"Oh, great"
"Does anybody know what's going on?" Alex exclaimed.
Beck came into Herman's room. "You find me a real heart yet?" he asked.
"We've got a real heart for you. You just have to get over yourself. Move on. Whatever it is that happened between the two of you is so far in the past..."
"It's like it was yesterday"
"Okay, fine. You can't forgive him". She sat down beside him. "So don't. Beat him. Take his perfectly good heart and outlive him with it"
"There's... Really enough juice left in that heart to get me to his funeral?"
"There's enough juice to get you dancing on his grave"
He smiled, patted her hand and nodded.
Alex, Aurora, Cristina and Beck took their patients to the OR. They all headed for the door of OR 2. "Where are you going?" Cristina asked. "Surgery. Remember that?" Alex replied.
"No, I'm in two"
"No, you're not. I am"
"Move. I've got a domino transplant"
"And I'm getting a kid off dialysis"
"I can totally wait", Jaylen offered. "No, you can't," Aurora said. "Well, I can't. Let's get this show on the road", Herman said. "This kid's a flight risk. Find someplace else", Alex said. "This OR's the only one that's staffed", Beck pointed out. "Can you guys please shut up?" April said, peeking out of her OR. "My patient is trying to die in here, and he'd like to do it in silence". "Oh, God. He's dying in there", Jaylen questioned. "Maybe you should go first", Herman suggested. "How long is he gonna be?" Alex said. "Because Yang needs the OR". "I've got an OR", Cristina snapped. "Shut up!" April yelled. "Hey, all of you shut up", Lucy said, coming over with Callie. "Alright, here's what you're gonna do...", Callie said sternly. "Okay, just give me one second". She walked off and Lucy, looking slightly confused, followed her. Jackson approached them with a pensive look on his face. "Kepner, go back to your patient", he ordered. "He can take as long as he needs. We will wait. Yang, you're in OR 2". "What? No", Alex argued.
"Heart and lungs trump kidneys. Take the patient back to holding, and the next OR that's available is yours"
"You can't..."
"That is it"
Nobody moved. "Well, you heard the man. He's the boss. Now move", Bailey said.
Meredith and Jo entered Alex's OR with the kidney. "It's about time", Alex stated. "You mean "Thank you, Meredith for carrying a kidney across state lines for me", Meredith corrected.
"Whatever. Hand it over"
"Can I scrub in? I'd love to...", Jo tried.
"I got Sloan and Murphy". He took the kidney and turned away from them.
Aurora gave him a confused look which he ignored.
Meredith and Jo left the room.
Aurora scoffed.
"What?" Alex asked.
"Do you want us to apologise, Alex? Is that it? Well, then, I'm sorry. I'm sorry we bought the hospital. I'm sorry you have to think of us as your bosses now. But we didn't do it for just us. We did it for everyone, including you. So drop the attitude before nobody wants to work with you anymore"
Beck was waiting outside Derek's trailer as Owen jogged home. He stopped in front of her. "I don't want to talk to you", he stated.
"I don't wanna talk to you either"
"Then why are you here?"
"Because I love Aurora and despite all your faults, I know you love her, too"
He sat down and sighed.
"Nobody blames you for hiring the plane. Not me, not anybody else, and you shouldn't either. You never would've signed that paper if you knew what was gonna happen. Let it go"
"You blame me. You said it, Beck. You said it again this morning"
"I was pissed. I've been pissed, but not at you. The world. Yeah. Yeah... I'm pissed at Kelly"
He got up. "You gotta let that go"
She nodded with tears in her eyes.
Lucy and Jack were in the bathroom at Joe's bar. "Is that enough?" he asked her.
"Yeah, for now. I'll be in touch though"
"Okay, good to know. So, can I buy you a drink?"
"No, thank you"
"Alright, no problem. But my door's always open. We could go to my place anytime, I got a lot of stuff there. Just letting you know"
"I'm good for now"
"Alright, I'll see you around"
"Yeah"
He kissed her cheek and left the bathroom.
She inhaled shakily as she looked in the mirror at herself. She ran the cold water and splashed it against her face. She poured out four pills and took them all, one after the other. She turned away from her reflection and left the bathroom. She saw Alex at the bar and froze. He locked eyes with her and smiled. She approached him stiffly. "Hey", he said, wrapping his arm around her waist. "Did I just see that nurse from the elevator coming out of the women's bathroom?"
"Uh, I don't know"
"Are you okay? You seem weird"
"Yeah, fine. Just tired"
"We can head home if you want"
"Let's get one drink and then we'll go, okay?"
"Okay"
"Thank you, doctor", the lawyer said as Cristina finished signing the documents. He handed them to Arizona who took a deep breath in.
"Yeah, right there". She signed and he took them away. "Okay, thank you"
"Well..."
"That's it, then", Meredith stated. "We're officially the new board of directors", Derek said. "For better or worse", Beck commented. "Congratulations, everyone", Meredith said and they all stood up, ready to leave. "Actually, I'd like to share a list of a few things I think are our top priority", Jackson said. "You mean that the foundation thinks...", Callie began.
"No, I don't, actually mean the foundation or my mom or these stupid protocols". He threw the folder in the trash can. "I mean me"
"Okay, well... Let's just listen", Meredith said. They all sat back down. "Number one, I move that we reinstate Owen Hunt as chief of surgery, effective immediately", Jackson said. "Dr Hunt has agreed to this". Aurora smiled softly at Beck but she just looked away.
"There were some conditions which brings me to my next point. We are reopening the ER. We will be a Level I trauma centre again. That will be a top priority once Owen Hunt is here to share his input. From now on, the foundation will follow our lead. We will tell them our decisions as we make them"
"Well, hear, hear", Callie said. "Yeah. No, that sounds good", Arizona agreed. "I've got one more thing", Jackson said. "Maybe you shouldn't push it", Meredith suggested.
"We are building a new hospital. And that was your vision, not mine. My priority is to make sure your vision comes true. And while it is important that we become a leading centre for research and innovation, we have to remember something, we are now officially a hospital run by doctors. That should mean something. It is our responsibility to be the best doctors we can possibly be so that those who come after us can strive to be their best. So... With that in mind, I move to rename the hospital"
"Again?" Cristina questioned. "Why would we do that?" Meredith added. "To what?" Aurora said. "Let me guess. The Harper Avery Hospital?" Callie said. "No", he said. "I propose that we give this hospital a name that can honour the very reason we came together and been able to do this, a name that exemplifies the spirit of this hospital, but also the depth of our dedication". He grabbed the notepad in front of him and flipped it over to show them. Ripa Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. Beck took in a shaky breath, tears filling her eyes and Aurora grabbed her hand under the table. "All in favour?" Jackson said, looking right at Beck. "Aye", Meredith said. Everyone else simply nodded except Beck who had yet to say or do anything. They looked at her as she took in a breath. She locked eyes with Jackson. "It's perfect", she whispered.
Aurora followed Beck out of the conference room. "Hey", she said softly.
"Hey"
"I just wanted to say thank you for what you did for Owen"
Beck scoffed. "Are you actually kidding me right now?"
"What?"
"You think I did all this for him? Are you serious?"
"Beck, come on"
"I did it for you because I can't stand the way you look at me anymore"
"How do I look at you?"
"Like I disappoint you. Don't try to deny it. You said all you needed to say today. Now I finally know what you think of me"
"I'm sorry"
"No, you're not. And I'm not, either. Maybe we just don't work anymore. Maybe we're just too different. Maybe Kelly was the only thing keeping us together. And she's gone. And you're with Owen. And I'm sorry, but I just can't stand you anymore"
"Okay. If that's how you really feel, then fine. I'll see you around"
"Yeah"
Aurora walked away and Jackson came over to Beck. "Hey, everything good?" he asked.
"Not now, Jackson"
"Why? What's wrong?"
"Nothing's wrong"
"Beck. Are you still mad at me?"
"No, it's not you. I just want to go home. I don't really know where that is anymore. Bye, Jackson"
